    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

Hi I've been following this thread (along with a different one on the same topic). I've been having the same problem with my ibook. I can add that I have no problem with startup. It's just that the screen "goes to sleep" unexpectedly and may operate normally for a few minutes or a few hours at most. Opening and closing the lid or restarting seems to cause it to awaken but then usually for just a few seconds or minutes. If it is connected to another video display that display continues functioning fine even though the computer screen is blank. In addition the desktop is there and visible faintly or if totally blank can be backlit through the apple logo and can be read. I've had my logic board replaced twice under the extended warranty and assumed it was that but now I'm thinking of the reed switch. Apple refuses to consider any further work under warranty as the last repair was in Jan, 06 and they claim only a 90 parts warranty and the machine is from 03. Any thoughts before I cut the wires? I have reset the pmu, run cocktail and disk utility. Other than the sleep issue the machine works fine. thanks Ronda or anyone else who has any ideas... Dave

    Help Please

Ops I replied to myself in error.....
    Tom:
I performed the steps indicated but this morning when I clicked the mouse and hit the space key and clicked the track pad again as before nothing happens.
I hold the power button for a few seconds and the screen fills as if the computer was normally awakened but it is locked up.
Then I have to shut it down with the power button  and then power it up as a reboot.
Not good...SMC reset didn't work....Throughout the day yesterday I put the computer to sleep and woke it up normally.  It seems to be a overnight problem.
Am I going to have to shut it down everynight?

  • Mac Mini/Mountain Lion sleeps but won't wake up (or crashes) every night.

    Hi everybody,
I have a mid-2010 mac mini server on which I recently installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (without server stuff).
Every night, it stops responding. The led is on but the display is off and it does not respond to mouse/keyboard. I even tried remote desktop.
The only solution is the power button...
    What I already did :
    - Reset Pram/Nvram
    - Reset SMC
I also took a look at the console and I found a message that is fired just before the machine stops responding.

    Any clue ?

Hi, I'm quite interested by your issue, because i get the exact same one.
On my mini (late 2012), system doesn t wake up from sleep if it has slept for more than 1 hour.
In fact I get the exact same message as you get in your console.
When I try and wake up system before the programmed maintenance wakeup, it wakes up fine.
But as soon as this programmed time has passed, it just won t wake up, I have to force switch it off via the power button and restart it.
I have nothing plugged on my mini except : AC - Thunderbolt display, and LAN connected to my freebox.
Do you still have the issue or is it ok now for you ?
I'll try in the upcoming days to plug the freebox in the thunderbolt display's adapter instead of the macmini's rj45.

  • MBP having sleep issues: won't sleep by itself & waking up randomly

Lately my Macbook Pro's been having a few sleep issues. I set my energy saver settings so that the display should sleep after 10 minutes and the computer should sleep after 20, however what I often come back to after being away from my computer for a while, is a turned on display with a log in screen. What it looks like is the screen will dim, and then turn back on again. It looks like my MBP refuses to sleep on its own, unless I close the lid or do it from the menu.
I've also had issues with it waking up in the middle of the night. When I went to the terminal and took a look at the wake reason, there appears to be two culpruits: "EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)" and "EHC1". I understand the latter might be a USB device or bluetooth, but I've seen it do this when no devices are connected and with my Bluetooth turned off. I've also disabled "Wake for network access" and there's no wake times schedules. I'm pretty frustrated at this point and would really appreciate it if someone could suggest a solution.
    Thanks in advance.

You've checked most of the reasons why it wakes. Also go to users>login items and delete any items there.  Here's alittle mre info, hope it helps.

  • Laptop P505D-S8000 went to sleep but won't wake up...

Laptop was put to sleep and now won't wake up.  Power, plug & battery lights are on and power switch is lit.  No hard drive activity at boot.  Fans run than stop.  I tried all the known tricks of removing battery & power cord, pushing power button for 60 secs, than powering up with power cord only.  This seems to be the fixall for this problem when I searched the web but only seems to work for 1 out of 10 people.  I have checked the screen at an angle to make sure the backlight is not out but since I am not getting activity on the hard drive I figured it was OK.  I get nothing by trying to boot into setup modes, bios checks or safe mode.
Any last advice other than take it to a toshiba tech?           Rick

Unfortunately that fix doesn't always work because these symptoms often represent a hardware failure.
Just to confirm, the power LED (not the AC adapter LED) does light up when you press the power button, right? If so, it does sound like you'll need to get the notebook serviced.

  • Sleeping baby won't wake up

Last night, 24 hours after plugging her in for the first time, and actually enjoying the set-up procedure, I put my new I-Mac to sleep thinking I was going to start again soon. But this morning, she won't wake up. Tried all the command suggestions in the book, tested the power cord, removed and reinstalled the memory cards. Still nothing.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
have tried using a different powercord?
how about trying a different power supply?
a thought are you using a surge protector or UPS? these can go bad at any time.

  • Won't sleep, yet won't wake.

I have a problem with my MacBook that I think others have had too, but I can't find a post about it. Probably 1 out of 2 times that I close my MacBook to put it to sleep, it won't go to sleep. And no, I'm not waiting for 2 seconds and deciding that it won't sleep...I wait for around 30 seconds. If I open it up, however, it won't wake up, and the computer is completely frozen and I have to force-shutdown.
I am running Leopard, however this happened with Tiger as well, so I don't think its a Leopard-related bug.
Also, it seemed to go away (when I had Tiger) after I deleted the hidden volume that it uses to store content for safe sleep, but I would like to be able to keep safe sleep enabled.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Zeb

You just described my exact same problem to a tee. But, I want to include an additional nightmare. Not only did I have these problems, it actually would sleep when I opened the lid. Then I'd close again and it would wake.
Then, I upgraded to Leopard last Friday. I crossed my fingers but to no avail - no change.
Then Saturday morning I noticed that the screen saver wouldn't come on. I tried a shut down and that didn't work either. I held the power button for 5 seconds and left Starbucks thinking that it might not come back on.
When I got home, I started my Macbook (it worked thank goodness) and immediately tried a re-set of SMC, PRAM, and Permissions for the umpteenth time since about August.
Guess what? To my surprise, everything started working like I had a brand new MacBook. It sleeps and wakes like it's supposed to, screensaver is good, and it will shutdown when commanded.
Please give it a try and see if you have the same result.
I'll root for you. Good luck.

  • W540 Sleep, Hibernate, Won't wake up, new Bios driver doesn't work (3/13/2015)

I am posting to this forum looking for a solution to this ridiculous problem of computer not waking up (monitor-wise) when it goes to sleep.  To recreate the issue I merely walk away from computer for 10 minutes or so, come back, monitor is dark.  If I hit any key the other 2 attached montors awake but the monitor on the W540 does not.  I am sick and tired of having to reboot to get it to wake.
What I've done over past two months to fix this:
Tried many of the suggestions here including going back to previous "Intel" drivers
    Tried the newest Bios update
This is a nagging and (in my opion) absolutley unacceptable problem to have.  It's like stepping back 15 years to the infancy stages of laptops.  I don't get it doesn't Lenovo have a QA department?  Obvisouly not.
I hate to lump in mulitple problems and won't but I also want to say the touch pad is absolutely a failure.  These two problems make the W540 more of a burden than a help.  As it is now I would never recommend a Lenovo to anyone.

  • Sleep problems, won't wake

Since the latest update 10.5.8 my mac pro has a problem waking from sleep. It actually sounds like the drive starts and usb items wake but the monitor does not. Anybody with similar issue?

I have the same problem with my imac G5 since upgrading to 10.5.8. The computer will not wake from sleep by pressing keys on the keyboard, however it only happens when I manually put the computer to sleep. It will awake from sleep when I unplug the keyboard's USB, or if I do a hard log-out by pressing the power button briefly. Not major problem, but certainly a nuisance. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

  • Computer goes into random sleep and won't wake!

This all started over a year ago, but I no longer remember what started it. After downloading an apple update my computer no longer goes into sleep mode on it's own. I have to manually put it to sleep. I tried every solution recommended...resetting everything, changing things in terminal, etc. I used a sleep assist program for a while but then I removed it b/c it was creating other issues. I finally just got used to doing it manually and lived with it.
Well, about 6mo ago (I cannot figure out why it started happening) my computer would just randomly go into a hard sleep mode. The screen goes black but I can still hear the computer running. NOTHING wakes it up. I have to shut down the computer holding the power button and then turn it back on. There seems to be no ill effects and I cannot figure out what is triggering it. I downloaded a cpu temperature program thinking that was it but it stays generally under 40C. It usually just happens while surfing the internet with only 1 or 2 tabs open. I generally only keep 3 programs running at a time (firefox, mail, itunes). It is totally random as I can go weeks without it happening but then yesterday it happened 4x in one day.
Help, I will try anything! Thanks

    chic,
This could be caused by a dead PMU battery. This is from the service manual:
    "Logic Board Battery
Important: Apple highly recommends removing the battery when handling the logic board. Make sure to use proper ESD protection when handling modules.
The battery on the logic board controls the stored system settings, such as date and time. It is only necessary to test the battery when you can’t power on the computer, or the date and time are
reset every time the AC power is removed.
The battery is also used to power the PMU chip (because the PMU chip keeps time and must always be running) when the computer is unplugged from the wall (AC power). The PMU is very
sensitive and touching any circuitry that is connected to the PMU can cause it to crash. If the PMU crashes, the battery life goes from about five years to about two days if the PMU is not reset. Once the battery goes dead, the PMU will reset the time and date every time the AC power is removed. To fix this situation, replace the battery and reset the PMU (refer to “Resetting the
PMU on the Logic Board” mentioned earlier in this chapter).
If the computer has a “No Power” situation, check the battery before replacing modules.
    Testing the Battery
    1. Remove the user access door on the bottom of the computer.
    2. Locate the battery test point.
    3. With the computer powered off, measure the battery voltage. Does the battery measure at least +3.5v?
If no, replace the battery and reset the PMU. If the battery measures +3.5v or higher, reinstall the battery and reset the PMU as above."
The battery test point is the lone one to the left and the ground point is just to the right of it.

  • My New iPad (16gb   4g) went to sleep, and won't wake up! What should I do?

What should I do? Pls Help!

Assuming that the battery isn't empty (and it can take up to 15 minutes of charging before it will respond), then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Media for Itunes on external hd.  When drive sleeps itunes won't wake it up

I have a new mac mini. I keep all of my songs and movies on an external hd and itunes knows to look for them there. When I stream to my apple tv everything works great. If I wait a few hours without using it, the external hd will go to sleep and the apple tv will not wake it up. I have two different hd's so it is not specific to one. I have to restart the computer for Itunes and the apple tv will work properly again. Is there a setting that will solve my dilemma? I have troubleshot this extensively and I am certain the drives going to sleep are the cause of my problem.

is your idea to have the computer put the harddrive to sleep, then when it is needed it will wake it up? Because the sleep is what is causing the problem. I have verified the setting is not enabled but I suppose I could try enabling it to troubleshoot further.

I think just the screen is sleeping because it did it during the install as well but the install finished and machine sounds like it is under normal use. The only thing I did to try and correct this, seen in sys prefs the screen was set to sleep before the sreen saver would come on. There was a warning indicating this so I made an adjustment and the warning was gone.
At this point, if it goes to sleep all i can do is a hard reboot to get it going again. Any ideas???
    Thanks in advance...

    High Art,
This is not a common malfunction, so I see no 'off the shelf' solution, but as the old thing has been sitting dormant for some time, replace the internal battery and reset the PMU as the latter may be the cause of it failing to wake from sleep.
