  • When I turn on or restart my Macbook Pro Retina 15", my entire screen flashes completely bright yellow for a few seconds and then it goes to the normal Welcome screen.  How do I fix this??

    Hi Everyone,
This problem just started today.  When I turn on or restart my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (Mid 2012 version), my screen is light gray like normal, and then after a few seconds my entire screen flashes completely bright yellow for a few seconds, and then it goes to the normal Welcome screen (where I choose to login as myself or a guest user).  This suddenly started today and has not stopped since.  This keeps happening every single time I turn on or restart my computer.
Yesterday I installed all the Mavericks and other updates that were available in the App Store, so I'm wondering if this is related to that since this never happened prior to my doing those updates yesterday.  When I first installed the new OS X Mavericks (10.9.3) update, it went through the whole installation process (took about 10 minutes), and then during the installation I got an error message saying that it couldn't verify my iTunes application that was on my laptop, and then my laptop finished installing the updates.  Then once my laptop restarted, the App Store "Updates" section said that I had to do the whole OS X Mavericks (10.9.3) and iTunes (Version 11.2) updates all over again.  So my laptop did the whole installation again (took about 10 minutes, but this time I didn't get that "iTunes error message" during the installation process).
Now, when I go to the App Store "Updates" section, it says the following under "Updates Installed in the Last 30 days":
-Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update (Version 5.05) installed May 15, 2014
    -OS X Update (Version 10.9.3) installed May 15, 2014
    -iTunes (Version 11.2) installed May 15, 2014
    -OS X Update (Version 10.9.3) installed May 15, 2014
    -iTunes (Version 11.2) installed May 15, 2014
    -Security Update 2014-002 (Version 1.0) installed April 22, 2014
I'm wondering if this flashing bright yellow screen upon bootup is related to the fact that my laptop installed the OS X Update and the iTunes Update two times each?  Or is this new problem totally unrelated?  It's just that this problem started a day after these 2 updates were installed twice.
My Macbook Pro Retina 15" (Mid 2012 version) is otherwise working fine at least as of now.  The only issue so far is this flashing bright yellow screen every time I turn on or restart my computer.
If anyone could please help me fix this so that my bootup screen doesn't flash completely bright yellow anymore, I would be forever grateful!
Thank you so much for reading this and for any help you can provide.
    hope everyone is well,
    Elaine

    Hey everyone in Apple world!
I figured out how to fix the flashing yellow screen problem that I've been having on my MBP!  Yessssss!!!
I found this super handy website with the golden answer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
I followed the instructions on this page and here's what I did:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
I went through the 6 steps above twice, just to make sure I got rid of whatever stuff was holding up my bootup process.  Since I did that, my MBP boots up just like normal.  No flashing yellow screen anymore!!
(Note that I arrived at this solution when I first saw this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570?viewlocale=en_US)
Let me know if this works for you!

My macbook pro (August 2010) keeps freezing when apple mail starts up. This happens every 2nd time I turn on my Macbook Pro. This forces me to hold down the power button to restart my Macbook Pro. Does anyone else experience this, and is there a fix? Thx.
since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
    HELP!!!! Please.

No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.
    Call back,
    Clinton

  • Every time i try to download updates i get an error and told to restart my macbook pro. why? what to do?

every time i try to download updates i get an error and told to restart my macbook pro. why? what to do?

This is a rare error, so excuse me if I ask some basic questions:
    1. Do you update your Apple software through the Software Update pulldown menu? If not, I'd suggest doing that.
    2. Do you perform diagnostics? If not, you can perform a Permissions check by going to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and running it.
    3. Do you perform other diagnostics? Download Onyx to your Mac, and perform a full diagnostic on your machine. You'll need to reboot.
    4. Have you tried to download updates individually from Apple? Not the perfect solution, but there's a good chance it will work.
    5. Have you used Terminal? If you go to Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type "sudo softwareupdate --install --all", and enter. Software Update should work.
    6. If all fails, consult help at your Apple Store, if there's one nearby.

  • How can I restart my Macbook Pro if I can't remember the computer's name at start-up? I do remember the pass word.

How can I restart my Macbook Pro if I can't remember the computer's name at start-up? I do remember the pass word.

Restart the computer with the Command and S keys held down and run:
    ls -l /Users/
    exit
By default, the first command will return a Shared entry and one with an username on it. Supply that username.

  • How do I fix constant restarts on macbook pro?

My Macbook Pro randomly asks to be restarted.  Very annoying when I'm working in a program.  Any ideas on how to fix it?  It's less a month old.

You hae a probelm with either software or hardware. No computer does this if there is not a problem.
First thing to do is limit what programs are running at the same time. Mac's do not shut down program when you close the window you were working in. Make sure you close program you ne l;onger need open.
If it still happens then it would be best to take it in and have the hardware checked, disgnostics run in the hardware.
But if it doesn't happen then it could be one of the programs you are using that is causing the system to crash.

Looks like the dreaded NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M problem with the mid-2010 MacBook Pros. It's usually preceded by intermittent black screen or loss of video - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US - but it sounds as if it's the defective GPU problem, nonetheless.
Take it into your local Apple Store or an AASP and see if they will replace the logic board gratis.

  • Restart on Macbook Pro 2010 model takes forever, unresponsive screen after restart.

My MacBook Pro takes 10 mins to restart and after it does restart the screen is unresponsive for atleast 10-15 mins. Then after it does get responsive, laptop is very slow !! Very often the screen just freezes when i am working, then slowly paints to a shade of transparent black and says "You must restart the computer, please hold down the power button" in about 5 different languages. I am not able to identify the issue. Is it a hard disk issue?

  • Unexpected restarts on MacBook Pro 10.5.7

    Hi all,
I tried searching the forums but could not find anything matching my requests. I've been experiencing something strange on my MacBook Pro recently.
Basically after I use my laptop and return back to it approx 4-5hrs later I notice that it tried to shutdown automatically. However, this shutdown failed as some applications failed to terminate in time and so the laptop stayed powered on. The popup windows were visible for me to view and witness the event.
What I would like to know is where can I look to see what could be causing this.
I tried a fresh power cycle (restart) and still it persists.
Other than a clean reinstall I would like to know what application/OS task could be causing this restart request?
    Regards,
    Carl

Please call me Carl, need to change that sometime....
Anyway I'm not sure how shutting down applications and monitoring the activity monitor is going to help. The problem I have is sometime after a restart or power up some applications are trying to shutdown. Would be interested to know what I will learn from this...if an application does not shut down properly, is it likely to repeat this activity until it is shutdown correctly?
    Mainly transmission, ichat and safari.
I have in the past had problems shutting down my Mac and have seen apps like Mail and Safari refusing to quit (even after a forced quit).... Leaves my Mac in a hanging state.
Also sometimes my Mac takes a few attempts to come out of sleep mode after shutting the lid and opening it (this needs to be repeated until it works). The Genius in the store saw this happen and said I had to hit the power button to force a shutdown, but I insisted that if you persist it will come back out of sleep. Not this is entirely related but I thought I'd mention it.
So after a shutdown all night I will monitor the system today and see if it wants to shutdown or not. I have all my normal applications running, safari, firefox, itunes, yahoo!, ichat, skype, excel, mail, peer guardian..

  • I am having difficulties with iPhoto slideshow.  The slide show stops in the middle of a presentation and the system crashes.  I must power off to exit the app and restart my MacBook pro.

I am having difficulties with iPhoto slideshow. It crashes in the middle of the presentation and I have to power off and restart my computer to get it running again.

    Wow. Okay...
I'll let the real veterans in this forum tackle your issues one after the other. But, I can tell you, all will be well.
My only comment would be re: your computer specs:
    BJReis wrote:

To be completely honest, FCPX is a RAM hog. It just is. But, RAM is relatively cheap, and the pay-off is good.
4GB is right on the edge, IMHO. 16G is ideal.
I wish you luck, hang in there, and standby for more help.

  • I force-restarted my MacBook Pro and now it wants me to repair or erase my disk and Reinstall Mavericks.  But I can't back up my files to do this.  HELP!!!!!

I had to force shut down my MacBook Pro today as it was freezing up and not allowing me to really click on anything.  All it let me do was close out of Photoshop.  What happened was FireFox decided to crash and not reopen after attempting to install an updated version of Flash Player.  When I rebooted after the force-shut down (holding down the power button to turn off my computer, which has always been effective in the past), I got a screen for OS X Utilities with the following prompts:
    Restore From Time Machine Backup
    Reinstall OS X
    Get Help Online
    Disk Utility
So, the first one is out of the question.  In the 5 1/2 years I've proudly owned my computer, I have never created a Time Machine account/backup.  I have preferred to use an external hard drive.  Unfortunately, the other prompts would be A-okay, if it weren't for the fact that I've been lax in updating my backup and haven't backed up to my external in about 8 months.
Because.... Unfortunately, to Reinstall OS X, my computer wants to erase all my data, so I need the backup of my files.  (I have a lot of photos on my drive).  But it says I can't even reinstall, because the hard drive is locked.... What?
And it won't repair my hard drive.  The prompts for why it should be repaired are: Invalid content in journal, Invalid B-tree node size, The volume could not be verified completely.
When I try to create a new image to backup to my external in order to wipe my system, it says "Unable to create "disk0s2.dmg" (invalid argument).  Now, I am not totally computer illiterate.  I can follow a set of instructions and do my own IT work basically 99% of the time.  But this is ludicrous.  I don't want to loose my images or lesson plans (I actually just got my school issued laptop and was going to transfer school files over to my school-issued computer as soon as I finished with my Internet needs (bills)).
What do I need to do to get my files backed up or fix this problem.  I've rebooted my computer twice now to try to fix this...

    Restore From Time Machine Backup
    Reinstall OS X
    Get Help Online
    Disk Utility
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
    You are running 10.5.8
Did you try booting off your Install disk holding the c key down.  From here you can get to the drop down menu just a few clicks in (you are not going to install) and run  the Disk Utility>Repair Disk.  See if it will let you do this.

  • My powerpoint is forcing restart of macbook pro?

My powerpoint is forcing restart of macbook?

I do not think this sounds like a good buy for you. First, the "core duo" machines are from the 2006 timeframe, it sounds like you are thinking about an i7 from the early 2011 timeframe. These older Macs came with Snow Leopard and starting in August 2011 they came with Lion (10.7). So this computer sounds like it must be at least 1.5 years old or so, not 7 months old.
    (1) Do you know the seller well and the history of this computer? Why is he/she selling it? (What is wrong with it?)
    (2) It sounds like something has been misrepresented to you. It's not Core Duo, and it's much older than 7 months old. It would be a pretty good price for being just 7 months old, but it's more like 1.5 years old. Again, what is wrong with it? Also, 6 GB memory sounds like an odd number, I guess it is possible, but these computers have RAM slot pairs so I would expect 4 GB, or 8 GB, or 16 GB, but not 6 GB.
    (3) A graphic designer using Adobe Suite extensively might want more than 500 GB disk space and a newer, faster machine than this one.  By the way, a brand new Apple 15-inch 2.3 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 with turbo boost up to 3.3 GHz and a 500 GB drive is $1799, brand new. You can upgrade to 8GB memory for $100, and also you can get larger disks for $100 more. This newer one would be a lot faster for demanding Adobe applications.
I tend to stay away from used Macs, especially laptops (which are more prone to issues and problems than desktop Macs), and the newer Macs sound a lot better to me. This is not a newer computer, it sounds like it is ~ 1.5 years old (or more).
