10.9.5 crash due to swapping issue

Hello all,
I have iMac 27" late 2012, 24GB RAM, 3TB Fusion, i7 4 cores, I am on 10.9.5 and I have experienced some hard system crash.
It looks the system can deal absolutely fluently with apps as long as the RAM is used, but early into swapping, the RAM graph in Activity monitor turns yellow, then red, then almost instantly there is a complete crash. No keyboard no mouse worked just reboot. That has happened at about 1GB used Swap on a 3TB fusion drive with ~2.7TB free. But why? I d expect it to continue operating into the dozens of GB used swap getting only slower and slower.
I have to admit that I tried to test the systems stability on purpose to see how it performs when swapping by opening more and more virtual machines (mostly linux) using Virtual Box.
At the end it was 12 VMs that killed the host.
That is not an ordinary usage I see that. My guilt !
-> But why is there a total freeze instead of a slow-down? Looks like a bug to me that the otherwise 100% stable system cannot properly operate on swap memory. And when I say stable I mean stable. Compared to both Debian stable and Redmond OSs, Mavericks is still the winner.
Disk check could not find any broken file system. So is all good now after the crash or should I go through the MAcHD looking for lost temporary files etc.?
Also, how does Virtual Box on OS X 10.9.5 host deal with a complete host crash when there are guest systems running? Is there any issues to be expected to the virtual disk images like broken virtual disk file systems? How to get that straight again?
I wonder if I did somehow "hurt" my poor iMac by hard reboot......

  • Preventing the Java stack crashing due to memory issues

    Hi all,
We have a SAP PI 7.0 installation and we have encountered issues with Java mappings utilizing all available memory on the Java stack and causing the server to slow and eventually crash. The original issue was caused by a poorly coded map, but as this is a large installation we want to protect ourselves against any other poor coding that may be on the system or introduced later.
Are there any configuration options within the WEB AS whereby we can either limit the amount of memory available to the execution of any one mapping, or that will enable the server to stop processing once a set limit is reached?
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Many thanks

  • Jboss Server crashing due to memory  issues.

The Jboss Server is crashing with some core dumps. We could see the following error messages :
    # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
    # SIGBUS (0xa) at pc=HEX, pid= [PID] , tid= [TID]
    # Java™ VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (1.5.0_XX mixed mode)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libc_psr.so.1+HEX] memset+0x88
Since I guess this is to do with the memory size related to JVM , does increasing the –Xss param to 128K help us to resolve this issue ?? Any other ideas/solutions ??

  • Application is not working due to memory issue

    Hi Friesnds,
Kindly help me regarding settings in java. Scenario is like that. I have one server having two jboss versions (jboss-4.2.3 GA and jboss- 3.2.6). Each having java memory (JVM settings) 1 GB. The total memory of that server is 3 GB.
Problem is that every two days my application is not working due to memory issue. Once i freed the memory (through run the commands - (1). sync
    (2). echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
    Application works fine.
I heared that the above command (echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches) can't run frequently because of server crash.
Kindly help me regarding this issue and provide the resolution.
Let me know if you need more information from my side.
    Thanks
    Ashish Shukla

All of the above.  I tested on 4 different networks and had no luck, I also had friends test my network and the other networks with their iPhones and all had no issues using FaceTime.
Also after I wiped my phone (erased all content and settings) I was able to successfully initiate a FaceTime call with no changes to my network and was also able to initiate another call when connected to another previously tested network that didn't work before.  Once I restored from backup though, FaceTime stopped working again.
I did find this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5163024?start=0&tstart=0
and tried the suggestions found there too.  That discussion describes my issue I am having as well.

  • Jrockit crashes due to outofmemory and illegal memory acces

    Hello,
We have been using jrmc-3.1.2-1.6.0 and lately we are seeing JVM crashes after every couple days. Note: We have been seeing these crashes recently , for last 1 year we did not see such crashes.
Following are different issues that we have seen over last few days:
    1. Crash due to illegal memory access
    2. Crash due to out of memory error
    3. Sever becoming unresponsive/Idle
For illegal memory access and out of memory crashes, there was jRockit dump file created and Dump file seems to be pointing at Jrockit libjvm.so module for the exception/crash.
    Any help would be appreciated!

From the command-line (-Dehcache.monitor.enabled=True) you are using some form of caching.
The out-of-memory occured as the JVM was unable the allocate an object: C Heap : 1 memory allocations have failed
Could you check how the live data set is going (or the memory leak detector)
Some concerns with regard to tune a JVM that runs a cache can be found here: http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=7083
Note that the example given discusses Coherence, but can be adopted for another caching mechanism as well.

  • Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  Only one Sparse Bundle, same name.

Due to NAS issues, when I started a new time machine backup it did not have the old backups available. My question is do I need to delete them or will time machine automatically reclaim the space?  There is only one sparse bundle but when I enter time machine I don't see my historic backups.  I use a synology DS212 for my time machine.  Started a new backup which is 218gb but it says 618 gb is occupied  therefore it looks like 2 or 3 backups are still on the disk. Before my NAS issues the last backup was in 2014.  As you can see there is a second sparse bundle from 2012.  Not sure what that is.

This is an old message now, but what happened to me similarly was:
I had a major computer crash and through complicated pathways ended up reinstalling (Mavericks) as a new user (long story).
At least I had good Time Machine backups on an NAS drive (Synology DS212j), or so I thought - when I started Time Machine up again, the old backup file was gone, replaced by a new one using my "new computer" name. The old file was gone both by directly mounting the NAS drive and by clicking "Enter Time Machine".
It's like I had {OldShareName}.sparsebundle and then it was replaced by {NewShareName}.sparsebundle, all of the old info vanished.
(I have spent a week finding old files elsewhere and have completed a satisfactory self-restore. It pays to "archive" [my own variation of] as well as "back-up".)
My belief is that if this were a wired-netword-drive, e.g. plugged right into my iMac with a USB cable, then the old file would have remained.
But this is an NAS drive, connected directly to my Airport wireless router, and I don't know the significance of the fact that it stores its Time Machine backups as "sparsebundle" files rather than simply as plain(er) files.
As usual when things get complicated with computers (not just Apple computers) there was never a warning message. Something like "YOU'RE ABOUT TO DELETE A TIME MACHINE BACK-UP FILE!!!" would have made my life a lot simpler.
BTW, I did try a "restore from Time Machine" option the first thing I had my "new computer" (old hardware, 2009 iMac) up and running, using Migration Assistant, and it ran for many hours and then failed in the wee hours - what that has to do with anything I'm not sure.
I'm not sure that I have a question about this other than "why do these things happen to me?", but it's a warning. Apart from that I've been very happy with the stability and reliability (but not the cost or set-up complexity) of NAS vs. directly-cabled external drives.

  • Multiple and frequent crashes due to spellchecker

    Hi,
Since the release of the last 2 version of the French dictionaries, I've been experiencing a LOT of crashes due to the spellchecker
At first, I was using FF3 and I got so sick of it that I switched to Minefield: the problem is still there, unfortunately
This isn't a small issue: It IS very frequent, almost always if the message you're typing is long enouth
I've tried many different things like disabling extensions, ect: I now have absolutely no doubt about it, it's being caused by the spellchecker
It's actually so frequent that I've come to type my messages in another app first and then copy paste in FF: it's too munch of a pain, I'm now going to use another browser until this issue is solved

    Thanks for your reply
Yes, I've looked at the link you gave and it's definitely the bug I'm experiencing
As for the dictionaries; I use:
    Dictionnaire français "Classique" v4.0.1 ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/french-dictionary-classic-spel/ )
    and
    United States English Spellchecker v5.0.1 ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/united-states-english-spellche/ )
note that I have also tried the 2 other versions of the French one and both with no luck
    These 2 other version are:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/french-dictionary-classic-and-/
    and
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/french-dictionary-modern-spell/
I'm also giving you the version of the English one, because as it turns out it sometimes also causes FF to crash (less frequently than the French one)
I didn't know there was an alternative (Hunspell), I will try that asap

  • ExpressCard (PCIe) hot-swapping issue only happened in MacBook Pro 6.1

ExpressCard (PCIe devices) with hot-swapping issue only happened in MacBook Pro 6.1. But there is no this issue at all in MacBook Pro 3.1 and MacBook Pro 5.2.
I had tried ExpressCard to SATA2 Adapter (Silicon Image 3132 ASIC), ExpressCard to 1394 Adapter (TI XIO 2200 ASIC), ExpressCard to USB3.0 Adapter (NEC D720200 ASIC) and ExpressCard to SDXC/UHS-I Adapter (JMicron JMB389 ASIC). I had got Kernel Panic (Sytem Crashed) for ExpressCard to SATA2 Adapter, Other three devices can not be detected when we process hot-plug / hot-removal these ExpressCard (PCIe devices).
We expect Apple can solve ExpressCard (PCIe) issue by updating EFI / OS Software. Awaiting for your kind reply~ Thanks in advance!

  • V3.6.3 Crash Today - Possible Plugin Issue?

Re: v3.6.3 Crash Today - Possible Plugin Issue?
    Ref: (a) Crash ID bp-cb196f96-dd38-44d7-bffb-778a22100531.
    (b) https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
This user really does not know whether a plugin is involved here, but also, cannot rule that out. And exploring the Plugin Check page with its limited information, has found the following significant issue un-addressed, and thus, mysterious to him.
Please, consider adding to the Plugin Check page, ref. (b), an explanation on this question>> What must one do, i.e., perform what steps, to update a plugin? I.e, is it infallibly sufficient to download & to run the download? Is updating a fully automated process for all plugins?, or even for some plugins? E.g., does updating an Adobe plugin ever require uninstalling the old plugin first (as does updating the Adobe Reader program, and Acrobat, etc.)? How shall the general user of Firefox know precisely what he/she should perform in this regard, when it is well known that the Adobe updates sites generally fail to recognize and advise the user on the question of whether to uninstall first. We see it in forums, that many of us general users have encountered install failures with Adobe updates, and (1) have found that Adobe updates usually do not work well if installed over the old version, and (2) have found that uninstalling Adobe apps often does not go smoothly and fails to complete the job, leaving vulnerable exe's or dll's hanging around to frustrate our subsequent updating. And, Adobe is not the only offender in this way. A frank and helpful mention of this issue would save much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and if uninstallation is a good idea, please explain how to Uninstall a Plugin, because plugins generally lack an Uninstall button in the Add-ons window of Firefox. And, this begs the question, is it desirable to Disable a plugin, before running the updating installation file? Or is there "no benefit" if Disabled first? Please try to write up these aspects plainly. Ideally, from this user's perspective, placement of this ought to be a few sentences directly on the Plugin Check page. Your consideration and adoption of this suggestion is respectfully requested, and it will be much appreciated.

Plugins provide a way to use other program to embed content. so you have to go to the program that adds a plugin and check the options (preferences) to disable the plugin.''
    Anyone knowledgeable, please comment.
Thanx for suggesting the Disable button, cor-el, but my question addressed Uninstall of Plug-ins. This was due to the now-recognized problem which afflicts Adobe update patches, that the patch doesn't go well unless the old version is Uninstalled first; thus requiring a clean installation of the fully updated application.
It is my understanding that the Disable button does not necessarily uninstall the old files. When I was unaware of this consistently occurring property of Adobe's patches, I had more than one case of Adobe Reader and Acrobat failing to update completely, causing hours of fruitless troubleshooting, and this continued with the most recent patches to Adobe Reader, the one updating it to v9.3.2, as well as earlier ones. Therefore, it seems not unreasonable to expect that the Shockwave Flash plugin that is now flagged as vulnerable again (v10.0.45.2), needs to be Uninstalled before updating.
Is there no dependable method for Uninstalling plugins?
If not, then one wonders, why not? Is there a reason why Mozilla designs Plugins to be different from Extensions in this regard?

After upgrade to OSX Mavericks my 2009 MBP keeps crashing due to kernel panic (happens every 20 minutes or so). Please help me with this, it's getting very frustrating. Have tried disk utility, there were errors (file system was corrupted), the disk utility managed to repair the disk but the crashes continue.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I deleted some of the old stuff that showed up on the report (have removed virtual box long ago but some residual files were apparently left). It didn't help though. Will remove forticlient too as a test.
Meanwhile here's the new etre-check and crash report:

We run an iMac 3.4 GHz I7 in our church worship service; we have front screens and a stage display monitor ; we haven't upgraded to Mavericks because we heard about issues with multiple screens crashing.  Has this issue been resolved?  Now that we are 2 upgrades behind, I'm getting little concerned.  Thank you!

Oh, well that was a whole other kettle of fish:
Oh the G4 I attempted to install iLife '08 before Lepoard was available. About the only thing that installed cleanly was iPhoto. I ended up reinstalling everything back to iLife '06, and then upgrading back to the current stable version of the iLife '06 version. I didn't attempt a reinstall until after I upgraded to Leopard.
When I did reinstall, I made a iLife '06 folder, copied all iLife apps into it, and upgraded. Seemed to work, except for the part where iMovie gets left behind and iDVD is only mostly functional.
When I installed on the other 2 machines, it was after installing Leopard and all upgrades. On those 2 machines, I didn't bother with the copy, I just moved everything to the iLife '06 folder I created, and did a fresh install.
I didn't have to do anything with the iPhoto Libraries, that I can recall.
I always do an upgrade, never an archive and install. I've never had a problem with this back to 10.1 or 10.2.

  • No airtunes with pppoE due to routing issues?

I just switched to an optical fiber to the home internet connection (which is getting pretty popular here in Japan). Needless to say, the network is very fast, however, I can no longer use airtunes via my airport express network. The airport express stations (both of them) no longer show up in iTunes. My guess is that this is due to a routing issue and the same problem must have been encountered by others before and hopefully solved. The new internet connection uses pppoE to make a connection to the internet service provider. This gives me an internet address of the form 125.197.xx.yy. I still have my airport express set to get an address via dhcp (which the new optical fiber hub provides) and is of the typical private network form 192.168.1.4. When I am connected by pppoE to the internet, my iTunes cannot see my airport express due to routing issues I assume. Is there an elegant solution to this -- can I use my airtunes and the internet at the same time? Would modifying the internet routing help here (I have used this before when I have had multiple interfaces going (e.g. one in a secure local lan and the other supporting an internet connection via ssh to the outside world). Any advise would be much appreciated. I haven't tried asking my airport express to log in via pppoE -- is this the only solution?

Well as I have for my last several posts -- I solved the problem myself. I am pretty sure that the root cause was a routing problem (pretty obvious in fact). By have the airport express base station connect via pppoE itself (I have a remote relay airport express as well) and switching to NAT and DHCP distribution of addresses via the airport express, I can both see my airtunes as well as my ethernet connection. It is a non-ideal solution as I have a fixed IP which would have been convenient to log in from outside to, but I guess I can live with that.

Any upgrade will be to the most recent, compatible version, in this case 7.0.6.

    Hi,
I am using your software: CS6 InDesign Suiteon a PC using a Windows 7 operating system.
Due to eyesight issues, I need to have the menu bars of programs in easy-to-read font and picture size.  Specifically, the menu bar across the top (File, Edit, View, etc.), and the menu bar on the left side with the graphic depiction of options.
In earlier versions of Windows (e.g. XP), whenever I changed the screen resolution on my computer to a lesser resolution in order to show the link icons on my desktop in a larger, more readable size, all the software programs, including yours, appeared on my screen with the menu bars in the larger font size that I needed.
However, in Windows 7, this is not the case.  Even though I have selected the lowest resolution, making the icons on my desktop extremely large, I cannot read the options across the top menu bar of your program, nor the pull-down menu items that they contain.  I cannot see the graphic depictions of options on the left side of the screen. They are all too small.  How can I make your program increase the size?

CS6 is not high-DPI compatible/ enabled and that can't be changed. If you cannot6 make it work with your operating system means, then short of joining Creative Cloud and using newer versions there is nothing you can do.
