10.9.5 IMAP running amok: deleting emails

Hello all,
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (10.9.5) to replace my "vintage" 2008 17" silver MBP (10.6.8) due to the old computer's inability to run this year's Turbo Tax. The Mac Mail app that came with the computer ("Mail" v 7.3 (1878.6) seems to have configured itself when it came to the incoming and outgoing server names for Time-Warner, our ISP. The new computer's email is also IMAP instead of POP. The other devices still in use on our network (one 2009 white MacBook and an iPhone 5s) are still using POP.
The problem: It appears that the new IMAP mail app on the new MacBook is deleting emails off the Time-Warner server. One test message sent to myself appeared for just a flash, a split second) in Mac mail's Inbox. It was too fast to read, and was also deleted from the server. Other test emails have remained in the Mac mail Inbox for minutes or hours before being auto-deleted from both my Mac and the Time-Warner server. There are apparently no settings on the Time-Warner webmail site to control the frequency at which messages are deleted from the server so it seems to me the Mail app is doing it.
I could just change the names of the servers in the new MacBook back to the old POP names, but in that dialog box it says "Account type: IMAP" which I cannot change. Has anyone experienced such a problem?
Thank you in advance,
On Duty Dad

Linc,
Thanks for the reply. I did seem to stumble upon the solution (that is, everything is working for now but time will still have to tell). I changed my new MacBook's account to a POP one. The fault apparently lay in the combination of POP and IMAP accounts linked to the same email address.
Best,
ODD

• IMAP user cannot delete email

I have an IMAP account on our server that has a few people accessing it. It is having some problems, but the weirdest one (the one that I think might be causing the other problems) is that there is an email from several months ago that won't go away. If they delete it, it comes back the next time they get mail and kicks out an error that it cannot be deleted. I think there is something corrupt with that message and it is causing problems. Is there a way to delete it on the server?

Try and use mailbfr to reconstruct the affected user's mailbox first:
sudo mailbfr -m username

• My email account in Mail.app is IMAP, but when I delete emails, they don't delete from other devices connected to the mail server with IMAP. Deleted mail on other devices delete as normal from the server and thus from other devices as normal.

MacBook Pro, late 2011 version. Up to date Mountain Lion.
My email account in the Mail.app is set up as IMAP, but when I delete emails in the Mac Mail App, they are not deleted from the mail clients of the other devices that are connected to the mail server with IMAP. IMAP works perfectly between Windows Outlook 2010, iPad Mail App and Android default mail client. Deleted messages behave correctly, as in delete from one device and the mail is deleted from all devices.
Having just tested in reverse order on the Mac; emails deleted from the email client on Windows, iPad and Android are not deleted in the Mac Mail App. It appears that the account is behaving like POP rather than IMAP.
Any advice on how to have IMAP work correctly on the MacBook Pro Mail.app?
Thank you.

Hi Csound1, thanks. The email host is 1and1.co.uk, however, i am going to fess up and make myself look like a plonker now -
the email account in question was set up in Outlook as POP - stupid, stupid, stupid me, wasted an afternoon on this! I have now changed the Outlook account to IMAP and Mail.app works perfectly - and looks much nicer than Outlook did. Im in the middle of converting from Windows to a Mac, and still finding my way around the Mac
The lesson learned, never assume - always double check! All my other email addresses with 1and1 are all imap, except this one, and it happened to be the first one I set up in the Mail.app. (bows head in disgrace!)
Thank you anyway for attempting to help me!
Cheers

• How do I retain a copy of deleted email on server using IMAP?

I like using an IMAP connection for Iphone email because it gives me access to personal folders created in my Yahoo mail account. On my Iphone 4S, I was able to delete an email without causing it to be deleted in Outlook on my desktop computer. I have not been able to duplicate this using the Iphone 5 and don't know whether I have a setting issue on the Iphone, my desktop, or in my Yahoo Mail account. I have searched all three and cannot find an option that specifically addresses this.
I am accessing Yahoo mail on my desktop through a POP account. On the Iphone, I have selected the NEVER advanced option for removing deleted messages.
If anyone can help me with this, I would be most appreciative.

Check your mail preferences. The example below is from the mail app that comes with mac. In my case I'm using yahoo mail which is a POP3 account. POP stands for post office protocol which is the set of rules used by a POP mail account to transfer mail. You can learn more about it here if interested. If the box below is checked, all the mail will be downloaded to your computer when you check your mail using the built in mail app and removed from the mail server. Here is another page to help you set up your hotmail account for use the the mac mail application. Hope this clears things up.

I use internode and imap. When the ipad deletes emails it also removes them from the mac. How can I reverse this so the mac is the master and the ipad is the slave?

Thanks for the info. - I now know that deletion works both ways!! - (unlike POP where emails deleted from the ipad also deleted them from the mac even before I could read them, whereas emails deleted from the mac were not removed from the ipad!!! - ie. the ipad was the master over the mac - the slave). Prior to changing to imap I used to transfer all nongarbage emails from inbox to mailboxes before my husband could ask if he could delete emails on his ipad. I have noticed however if you do this in imap, they are removed from the inbox on the ipad as well (this did not happen with POP). So we still have to check but the number is less so we like imap better than POP.
Thank again

I have an imap account and deleted all mail from server. Once doing this all emails from my iPad -which was on a wi-fi- where automatically deleted. Fortunately these emails are still visible on my iPhone that was without connection. If I send all these emails to my iCloud account - they will remain into my outgoing folder until I open my wi-fi- …BUT will they be sent when I open my wi-fi connection, or since they are no longer on my server… be deleted for ever!?

This is how IMAP works, if you delete from one device it will also be deleted in the other devices.
iCloud do not backup e-mails.

• How can I convince T'bird to delete email when online in an IMAP account?

When online, deleting email Thunderbird does not automaticly move the message to the Trash folder as selected in "Account Settings:Server Settings:Server Settings:When I delete a message: Move it to this folder: 'Trash'." However, this does work automaticly when Thunderbird is offline.
I'm fairly sure the constant failure, with a notice, of the program to place a sent email into the 'Sent' folder is related. When I mark a messate as junk it is marked junk but not moved to the 'Junk' folder as set in the account settings....
The accounts do have a Trash, Junk and Sent folder on account provider's server.
- Jim

Jim, I said right click the account in the folder (that is the list on the far left of your screen) when you select subscribe you get a dialog that looks like the attached image. That is "what the server has" So you checking the other dialog for mismatches. You will also need to look in Server settings for your deleted folder setting. For some reason it is not with the others.
If you click on the advanced button in Synchronization and storage, you will get the same "subscribe" dialog if the other instructions just don't cut it.

• I cannot delete emails I have a iphone 3GS running IOS 6.0.1

I cannot delete emails, I have an iphone 3GS runningIOS 6.0.1. I tap edit and the red circle appears, but no delete rectangle or dustbin appears

AT&T does not issue unlock codes for iPhones. I had to think a minute, because I never had a 3GS myself, and thought it might have been different for them, but my daughter had one, and the unlock process is the same as for the 4. After AT&T approves the unlock (which means the contract has been fulfilled), they notify Apple. AT&T then sends the phone's owner an email detailing the process to unlock the phone, which consists of backing up the data, then restoring the phone as new in iTunes (which is where the unlock comes in), then restoring the data backup and then syncing. I went through this to unlock my AT&T iPhone 4. SO, I'm not sure what the unlock code business is about, except that it doesn't sound legit.

• New iPad 2 always downloading previously deleted emails

I am using my Verizon.net POP3 email server. On iPad mail setup Incoming I have it set to delete from serer when removed from Inbox. My interpretation of that set-up is that any email I download, view and then delete (thereby removing it from my Inbox) should be deleted from the server by the iPad's OS. Those I don't delete should remain on the server. I also have an iPhone 3G running OS 4.x and it does not have this problem. Emails deleted on it are also deleted from the server so that they don't appear again when accessing new mail. The Mail settings otherwise appear identical to that of the new iPad.
This is NOT a POP3 vs. IMAP problem. It is an OS5.x problem as OS5.x is not handling the deleted emails by deleting them from the server. I want emails deleted from the iPad2 to delete from the server whereas those I leave in the iPad 2 mailbox I want to stay on the server so that I can manage those from my Win7 PC using Outlook 2010.

THANK YOU! Great solution!

It looks like you still have your emails stored on the mail server from your Internet Service Provider. When you update to ios5, it wipes out the emails on your devices. Then when you go into the mail tools, it pulls the emails off the server again. Very annoying, I agree.
Best thing is to delete unwanted emails off the server, likely using a web based email tool from your ISP (eg Webmail from Time Warner, etc).
Hope this helps.

• HT6030 Having major Mail problems since I updated Maverick on my 27" iMac. Delays deleting emails and moving emails to other folders. Anyone else having this issue? If so, any known fixes?

I have an iMac that around 3 years old. Just installed Mavericks when it first was released. I also have a Time Capsule (2TB) that runs my network to my other three Apple devices: iPad2, iPhone 5s and a new Apple TV. Having major Mail issues here. Everything is very delayed and extremely slow. Moving emails to other folders sometimes takes a few minutes and the same goes for deleting emails. Delete them and they don't go into the trash for several minutes. It's getting very frustrating to say the least. Mail also quits very often. Mail also will freeze with the little color ball spinning, therefore I would have to force quit Mail. When the errors occur, it's automatically sent to Apple but there hasn't been an update since 10.9.1 that has fixed it. Apparently, that update was only for gmail issues. Anyone having the same problem? Fixes please?

I have my entire network and all Apple devices setup as IMAP, not POP. If your settings are setup as a POP account on all devices, emails will not erase when deleted on your other devices. Just something to keep in mind. I'm sure you're aware of this but just wanted to throw it out there. Google IMAP vs POP. However, it seems like your having the same issues as I am. I'm going to swing by an Apple store by me and speak to the genius bar and see if they can come up with something or are aware of this issue. Keep you posted.

• My iPhone 5 suddenly started re-downloading all previously deleted emails from my POP accounts

Yesterday, my iPhone 5 started re-downloading all previously deleted emails from my POP email accounts. I use the native Mail app and have three POP emails set up on my phone. The number of messages downloaded across all of them is over 1,000 so far and date back over several months. One of these is a Yahoo account, the others are work email accounts provided by two different hosting companies. I have not changed anything on any of these three accounts at the server/hosting level. I also run an IMAP account on my phone, which has not been affected, so this is obviously a POP-only issue. I started to delete the messages only to discover that older messages were downloaded in their place. There appears to be a cap of 250 messages downloaded at a time, but there's no way to change this in the phone's settings (this used to be a feature, but disappeared some time ago).
I'm on iOS8.3 (upgraded a month ago with no affect on email). I have not changed any of my phone's email settings, so I don't understand why this has happened out of the blue. I have checked the phone's email settings and there doesn't seem to be a way to limit the number of messages downloaded.
Does anyone know:
a. why this has happened, and
b. how I get it to stop?
Thanks!

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

• How can I set TB to auto delete emails after a certain period of time?

I have two email accounts set up in TB.. I am using TB 24.5.0, and one of the email accounts is a Gmail account, and the other is a Microsoft Exchange account with a domain I own running through Office 365. I suppose technically TB looks at that account like an IMAP, although it is not an IMAP per se.
In any event, I am coming to TB new from using Outlook 2010 and 2013. I would like to figure out a way to create rules for each of the email accounts that would automatically delete emails from my inbox after they are a certain age. I would also like to determine how I can establish a retention policy for emails I know I want to keep beyond their automatic purge time frame.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

This only works with IMAP accounts.
Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings
Select your account - Synchronization and Storage
Make sure to move any messages you want to keep to the Local Folders account prior to making changes. Local Folders should be set to keep messages forever.
Note, this is a manual step.

• 3G with 3.2.1 OS reloads deleted emails

upgraded to 3.1.2 on 3G. Now, after deleting email (read or unread) , they reload into my accounts - (running 3 differant email accounts - 2 POP3 -1 IMAP) all from different providers/servers.
ANYONE ELSE having this issue and solved it??

I have had that happen to me as well. I have 4 pop3 accounts syncing and occasionally it will do that if I delete a message and exit out quickly (usually before allowing another sync). I figure my device didn't have time to sync that change back to the server so it just pushes it back into my inbox.
So now I make sure I allow the mailbox to sync before exiting out of the mail app if I have deleted messages.
