10.9.5 killed Finder and I'd like it back.

Hi. I am having a problem with FInder since the recent update. Basically, since updating to 10.9.5 finder does not work. it starts, displays whatever directory it happens to be in, and will display the first directory you click. then it is done. You can't close it, can't display a different directory, and the display window picks up whatever is on top of it (if you happen to open a window over it) and never refreshes. also, if you click on a menu, the menu will flash on the screen and disappear. I do use google drive and a 3rd party add on called insync but i've been using them for a long time and only on this update did finder become an issue. Below is system data from EtreCheck. thanks.

They should be. Insync was installed about a month ago and drive presumably auto updates? anyway, i have the google drive app on my computer paused or stopped so it doesn't compete with insync. my setup was working fine prior to updating to 10.9.5.
p.s. Whoever maintains this site, it would be really nice if, after logging in, it would return you to the page you were on (i.e., this one) instead of taking you to the generic search screen where you have to search for your question to find your way back to it.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 require more extensive work to uninstall all its components. Never install such junk on a Mac.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.

May I suggest that you review the following setting in System Preferences?

The reason that I ask is that my life/work is based in files and, more importantly, folders.
If Mac OS is going the way of iOS in this regard, I need to jump ship now.

I have a new drive in my iMac. Now I want to move my iTunes files from my backup, but I want to know how to move it to the new computer so all my equipment will get recognized by iTunes in my new computer. Thank you.

Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the computer. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
If you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there. (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

IBook G4 slowdown with find and sort

My wife's iBook frequently decides to slow down to a mere crawl, and it sounds like the hard drive (I think) is working steadily during these spells. Looking at the processes w/ top, find seems to be sucking up heaps of CPU time. I tried killing the find process, at which point sort and then makewhatis took over and continued beating on the machine. Any idea where these commands are issuing from and how to avoid them or at least reschedule them? (This often happens in the middle of the work day.) Perhaps this is a spotlight issue, since it started around the time we updated to 10.4. But I've noticed no such issues with my powerbook since updating to 10.4.

Errr... A quick reality check is called for. If you make files visible to the finder then they are no longer invisible files, so ignoring invisible files won't help you one bit. your best bet is to do a manual check for a file that starts with a "." (which would normally be invisible):

Find and replace smart quotes with straight quotes?

I understand I can turn off smart quotes so that I can type straight quotes, but I need to replace hundreds of curly smart quotes with straight quotes, is there a feature that will let me do this? I am using FM8.

I am using FM9....so I don't know if the same shortcuts apply, but this is what I found out last week.
Use the Find and Replace tool:
With smart quotes turned off and the Num Lock key turned on:
Alt0147 will give you beginning quotation marks
Alt0148 will give you ending quotation marks
In the Find box use ALT0147 or ALT0148 for the beginning or ending quotes. When you click in the box and type
one of the shortcuts the correct quote will be shown in the box.
In the replace box type the regular straight quotes on your keyboard.
I was thrilled that it would work!...course you do have to do them separately and be careful not to replace the curly quotes
that you want to leave in your document.

How do I find and replace text in PHP files?

How can I in CS3 make sitewide changes to the text in PHP pages without changing variable names etc that have the same name?
For example if I have an installation of a PHP forum and I want to change every instance of the word 'forum' to 'message board'...
If I used the 'inside tag' search with " as the tag, then if "" contained a variable called 'forum' it would also be changed and therefore corrupt the code....
Is there a simple way around this?

I'm using CS3 on Windows Vista.

It looks like you're trying to find and replace source code, so you may be able to look at the various places that are looked at when finding and uncheck the ones that don't apply.
But, if it's all source code then that won't help. One thing that may work is to expand the search option - for example if the work "forum" that you're wanting to change it preceded by another word, or character or something that sets it apart, then do you find on that. You can expand that search phrase as far out in either direction that you need to to make it different, if of course that is practical in your situation.
The only other way I can think of is to somehow create an exception rule, but I'm not sure if that's possible or how to do it.
