10.9 mavericks frequent crashes

After i upgraded my macbook pro to mavericks i had a few crashes when i was trying to browse through chrome, safari. And then the crashes became more and more frequent and now it would crash even if i read a pdf through preview.

I have no idea if this will help.  I've tried others suggestions, like unplugging the keyboard and replugging it; didn't work.  I tried restarting; didn't work.  I tried rebooting in safe and repairing disk permissions; didn't work.  I tried everything.  Then I thought since sending over 20 crash reports out to apple didn't really seem to be getting any results, (I'm sure they are busy fixing other things)  I will continue to tinker with my system, which hasn't been stable for a full day, until the last two days, where I haven't had one crash yet.  Here's what I did that seems to have worked, although I cannot guarantee any results for anyone else:
Go into system preferences, security&privacy and turn OFF what Apple suggested to turn on, that is 'Require Password XX hour aftersleep or screen saver begins.  Mine is now unchecked.  The next box is also unchecked (show a message when the screen is locked) and the next, 'Disable automatic login' IS checked.
The other thing I changed was Setting the diplay, under 'Energy Saver' in system preferences, to Computer Sleep: NEVER and Display sleep: NEVER.  Wake for network access is also checked under the energy saver system preferences.
That's all I changed and my system seems to be stable now.  I haven't had a restart in 2 days, and I had over 20 previous to that, since upgrading to Mavericks.
Please let me know if this helped anyone or if this too, is just a flukey 'worked for me only' suggestion.
I don't suggest doing this on a laptop that's not secure, though, as you run the risk of keychained passwords being accessed.  I live in a secure building and am on an iMac (2009) so thought it would be fine to disable screen security settings as there is limited access to my building.  Good luck, hopefully Apple will come out with an update to prevent these random crashes.  It's incredibly annoying and negligent, that they didn't test all models of computers that Mavericks would be approved for and installed on.  Everything has its price, I guess, and this software update certainly wasn't 'free' as it has cost me tonnes of time and lost revenue from work.

  • Mavericks Frequently Crashing

Alright, I have been had this problem ever since I updated to Mavericks a few months back. Mavericks randomly shuts down/or restarts my computer, seemimgly regardless of whether it is charging or not. (NOTE: It seems to happen most often when I am doing something related to music or typing on a browser/Word...)

Sorry if I haven't looked far enough for the answer already and if you need any other info (within reason) please ask, I will do my best to give it to you,

What you should do next depends on the circumstances. For example:
If you installed the keylogger yourself and then forgot about it, remove it according to the developer's instructions. If you want to keep it, check for an update or refer to the developer for support.
If you're under 18 years old, and the keylogger was installed by a parent or guardian, talk it over within the family.
If you're an adult, and the keylogger was installed on your personal computer without your permission, then the computer may be evidence of a crime or a civil wrong. Consider the legal implications before you do anything.
If the computer was issued to you by a school or employer, then you should check with the IT staff that the keylogger is authorized. Don't use the machine for personal business. If the keylogger interferes with your work, the IT staff will have to solve the problem.
In the event that the computer was tampered with by an unknown party, and you just want to clean it up, see below.
The only way you can be sure that the computer is not compromised is to erase at least the startup volume and restore it to something like the status quo ante. The easiest approach is to recover the entire system from a backup that predates the attack. Obviously, that's only practical if you know when the attack took place, and it was recent, and you have such a backup. You will lose all changes to data, such as email, that were made after the time of the snapshot. Some of those changes can be restored from a later backup.
If you don't know when the attack happened, or if it was too long ago for a complete rollback to be feasible, then you should erase and install OS X. If you don't already have at least two complete, independent backups of all data, then you must make them first. One backup is not enough to be safe.
When you restart after the installation, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process for a new computer. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup in Setup Assistant.
Select only users in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications, Other files and folders, or Computer & Network Settings. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
Reinstall third-party software from original media or fresh downloads—not from a backup, which may be contaminated.
Unless you were the target of an improbably sophisticated attack, this procedure will leave you with a clean system. If you have reason to think that you were the target of a sophisticated attack, then you need expert help.
That being done, change all Internet passwords and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Do this  after the system has been secured, not before.

  • OS X Mavericks and iwork frequent crashes

    Hi there,
I have a late 2012 MacBook Pro with Mavericks and the new iwork suite.
The system and the program suite are unrealiable and unstable. I have frequent crashes using Keynote, losing important presentations. The screen freezes, forcing a mannual reboot. In addition, everytime I connect to projector, using keynote, the system crashes, and I also have to manually force reboot. After rebooting with the projector connected, the second screen appears fine. These problems are very frequent. I wonder if anyone has similar problems.
I am a poweruser, used to compile my own scripts and research programs. I use OSX since Leopard, which never had such issues. Since Mountain Lion, I can not rely on my computer as I used to in my old macbook white from late 2008.
Is there something I can do to stop these crashes?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash or panic reports. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". It may be under either of the two subcategories, "System" and "User." A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic".
Select the most recent of each and post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as a hang log — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Frequent Crashes since updating to Yosemite.

My Macbook Pro has been frequently crashing since upgrading to Yosemite (10.1). Nothing in particular seems to crash it and I'm not running any intensive programs. I'm usually just running a combination of Pages, Word, Preview, Mail, and Safari. I run an external monitor in addition to the laptop display and often use multiple desktops so I can have easy access to PDFs. The machine is older, but I wasn't having these problems under Mavericks. I only upgraded because I made the mistake of upgrading my iPad to iOS8 and enabling iCloud Drive. This prevented my Pages documents from syncing and upgrading to Yosemite seemed to be the only solution. I swapped out the hard drive for a SSD two years ago, which really sped things up. Even now, it runs quickly, as long as it doesn't crash or get stuck, which it has also been doing more frequently. I still have plenty of disk space left (50GB+), but I have noticed that the OS is using more memory.
Is there something I can do, or is it just time for an upgrade?
    Thanks for any suggestions,
    Nathaniel

    Thanks Linc.
It hasn't frequently crashed insofar as it just "turns off," but if often freezes to the point where I need to force a shutdown. The most recent true crash was last Sunday. I've pasted the report below. But, there are several reports that end in .crash that I think refer to the forced shutdowns.

    Has it ever worked?
    Worked fine until now
So CC just started to give you problems? And it worked before?
Or former version worked fine and it stopped working when you installed CC?
    Clean install?
    Don't need to usually?
With CC (maybe also CS6) and Mavericks that might be a problem.
At least for some people a clean install of Adobe software was needed (after uninstalling and using the Cleaner tool before re-installing)
    Which fonts?
    NA
One of the known problems with CC is missing Verdana and Tahoma families (TTF, not OTF, no font management).
    Make sure you've got both.
    Do you have a printer?
    YES,
Printer should be turned on and of course driver up to date.
Illustrator writes and reads information on the printer in each file.
    You should also try:
    - reset preferences
    - set up a new user account in Mavericks and try if it works
    - check Wacom drivers and plugins (Inkling)

  • Using Aperture 3.51 I am having frequent crashes and freez ups when editing Canon raw files?

    HI,
I have an IMac with 4 G of Ram and am using Apeture 3.51. When trying to edit CS2 raw files I experience frequent crashes and freez ups of the whole computer. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention any color calibration being done on your monitor.  This is an essential part of any color-correct workflow.  What are you using to calibrate your monitor (and your printer)?
Print profiles (for soft-proofing as well as printing) are for specific combinations of paper & printer.  The nine you have are each, most likely, for a common paper (perhaps mfr'd by Canon) to be used with your printer.
I don't know what you mean when you say "I choose a high standard print option".
Have you read the User Manual chapter on printing?

There is also a good appendix on calibration:

  • Frequent Crashes after upgrading to ML (Macbook Pro 15" 2010)

I have been experiencing numerous, frequent crashes ever since upgrading my computer (Macbook Pro, 15", 2010 model) to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard. The crashes appear to be very random; they don't happen at startup and aren't associated with any particular application or action. For example, I once experienced a crash while opening a file in VLC. After restarting, I was able to use VLC without any problems, and instead experienced  a crash when opening a bookmark in Safari (which wasn't a problem earlier). In all cases, the screen turns black for a second and then the computer forcibly restarts.
Below I have pasted the details of the error report that the computer wants to send to Apple. I've had nearly 20 of these since upgrading on Wednesday night, and I don't know if they are all the same. But hopefully someone can help me here; I don't know how to interpret this log in order to pinpoint what is causing the problem. This looks a lot like the "kernel panics" that others have reported, but I just don't know what that means or how to fix it.
Also, I ran Software Update and am currently up-to-date.
    Thanks so much,
    Anthony

  • Frequent crashes with CS5.5 all of a sudden.

Hi.  I've been running AE CS5.5 fine on my Pentium I7 Win7 12 gig RAM, clean system, but suddenly I'm running into frequent crashes that I'm trying to isolate.
When it happens, it occurs when I try and do a RAM preview.  It renders the frames fine, but when I inturrupt it (keypad INS key) to play what it has, it sometimes says that it can't continue... saying something went wrong with Trapcode Particular, then the Tint filter, and then some other filter.  I don't think they are actually to blame.. just victims of something else.
The system seems sluggish often, too.  Normally, it's fine, but (I would imagine) when the RAM is filling up with the previews, it sometimes acts like it's an ancient computer... very slow pause before reacting to anything.  Generally, a Purge All clears it up immediately, but I'm not sure why it is straining so often, with an I7 processor, 12 gigs of ram, and a clean system.  Wasn't doing that with any other projects, and I suspect it has something to do with this one.
I THINK it might have been triggered by my inclusion of particles (although they are hardly enough to strain the system, and I've done this before fine).  Renders fine, no crashes.  Really, only just when I hit the keypad INS key to play a RAM preview.... and that's only about half the time.  Otherwise, it's working just fine.  So, it's seemingly random, although I suspect it's something with the RAM being eaten away as frames are stored as I jump around the timeline.
I believe it wrote a diagnostic txt file somewhere, but I don't know where it put it, unfortunately.
Sometimes, even a newly started AE and project load will crash immediately when I try and preview.
Another possible clue...  I have audio files (.wavs mostly), and sometimes when I would view the waveforms, I get some sort of error there too, but it continues on just fine (showing the waveform).
I'll often get the 'AfterEffects can't continue... Contact Adobe' window, with (0::42) at the bottom.
Only other error I sometimes get is the 'AE can't continue: Damaged Item (26:311)' one... usually when I'm trying to save the crash file before it closes the app.
Any suggestions as to where to begin?  Is that log file worth looking at?  If so, where would that be?  It's only happening sometimes... otherwise, it runs just fine (and has always rendered the whole scene no problem).
Hope someone can help.  Sorry if this is yet another tediusly vague and all-to-familiar post!
    Thanks

That I have yet to determine.  Certainly doesn't seem to crash if I take off the effects layers, such as particles.  I have to isolate each thing and see.  It's just difficult, since it only crashes SOME of the time, so it's hard to get an obvious cause/effect.
As far as I know, I'm using the most current version of Particular.
Seems a few things are running odd.
AfterEffects definitely becomes very sluggish in its response to mouse clicks at points... an obvious delay after each action, as if it needs time to think of each action.  Seems to be a memory thing (as it's fixed with a purge), although I'm not sure why it reaches a point where AE is struggling to keep it's own interface responsive.
Still getting occasional errors when I try and view waveforms of audio layers, although it continues on fine after the error message.  The error itself is kind of vague, so of no real help.
Just did another full render test, and it does it perfectly fine every time.  Something to do with the RAM preview, it seems.  Seems RAM is acting up both in that sense (RAM preview) as well as the sluggishness AE sometimes gets into (seemingly after you have previewed and/or jumped around the timeline a lot, so (in both cases) a lot of frames have been stored.  Still not sure why it reaches a point where it's struggling.  Disk Cache is on, so it shouldn't 'run out of RAM' in that sense.  Really confused...  An I7 with 12 gigs of RAM shouldn't be struggling like that (...even though it's random and only occassional).  I was wondering if I have something configured wrong in the memory settings.

  • Logic Pro 9.1.8 + Mountain Lion 10.8.2 - Frequently crashes when using plug-ins

I'm really hoping someone can help. I suspect this problem is new since I can't find a definitive answer.
When using the third party plug-in Superior Drummer 2, Logic Pro 9.1.8 frequently crashes giving problem report 'Logic Pro quit unexpectedly while using the Superior Drummer plug-in' followed by details.
This also happens when using Arturia Analog Laboratory. Similar problems have been reported by others using third party plug-ins.
Some have suggested removing the folder /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProKit.framework and then installing ProKit Update 7. I've tried this without success. Once removed, attempting to install it only launches the alert 'a newer version of this software is already installed', which it patently isn't. Removing it also prevents Logic Pro from launching and requires the reinstallation of Mountain Lion.
Others say it's a problem with Mountain Lion and even Lion. Apparently, the above fix works with Snow Leopard but unfortunately, since I downloaded Snow Leopard from the app store, I can't revert back because it's no longer available.
I don't know whether the problem is with the plug-ins, Logic Pro, or the operating system but I do know that this is not uncommon. I haven't yet found anything to implicate the plug-ins. All have been updated to their latest versions. I can not verify whether the plug-ins worked in previous incarnations, with a previous operating system or Logic Pro since I've only ever used them with Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro Retina 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.
The current cacophony of forum discussion is roughly sounding out Mountain Lion as being the issue.
I'm in the dark here! HELP!!!

The issue, according to other AAL users, is Arturia's drivers I am afraid to say.. The v1.5.2 ones work for some people but not others and they are waiting on a further update from Arturia to fix the issue. It isn't something that reinstalling ML or the Prokit for that matter..  fixes... unless you have some other issue with other plugins and software?

Hi, original poster here. I did not realize this would generate more discussion so I never checked back. I still had my warranty, so I took it to the store and got it repaired. The original problem I had was a screen with this icon flashing when I attempted to boot it up:
When I took it to the store, they told me that my computer was unable to communicate with the hard drive. I had this same problem three times in two months where this screen reappeared. Each time I went back to the store and they said the cause was different, but they were all hardware issues that physically made it impossible to communicate with the hard drive. After the third time, they simply replaced my laptop and I haven't had the same problem.
So in short: The reason you can't reinstall or move anything when you encounter this screen appears to be because nothing can communicate with the hard drive in the first place. You can't reach the disk or anything on it. So I don't believe it's possible to do anything besides take it to a physical store and have it fixed.

  • Frequent crashes in illustrator CS4 when performing undo

    Hello,
I have two employees using two relatively new Windows Vista computers and CS4.  They have frequent crashes of illustrator when they undo too quickly, or sometimes just undoing slowly will cause a crash.  It is only these two computers that are having the problem.  We have 3 other 32 bit computers that never have a problem, it is just the newer 64 bit computers.  I tried deleting the preferences but that didn't help at all.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    JT

    Wade,
Thanks for the input.  How do I get it to run as a 32 bit program?  I changed the compatability mode to Windows XP, but the problem is still occuring.  Is this the wrong way of going about it?
    Thanks,
    JT

  • Frequent Crashing

Recently all of my applications crash frequently. I can't figure out why and I haven't seen any other topics in her with similar problems. The main culprits are Safari and iChat but everything else seems to crash easily also. I ran Disk Utility and repaired both permissions and my hard disk but it didn't seem to solve anything. Whenever I'm doing anything, and i mean anything, the color wheel will pop up and then that program will crash and it'll happen several times in a row. I thought it could also be a memory issue but I've got 11GB free on my hard drive. Any suggestions?

sorry this reply is 2 months late, i hadn't checked back to the forum in a while.
But yes I have run the repair disk from my software install DVD several times. I've corrected permissions several times also, somehow they seem to mess up a lot. i don't know what's going on with it. the programs are still constantly crashing but now i have the extra special addition of the entire computer just freezing up and i have to hold down the power button to manually restart it. i've deleted tons of my files so now i have 38GB of free space. I guess I'll just have to get accustomed to running one program at a time and saving my work every 2 seconds and just dealing with the frequent crashes.
i've also found a few blogs that seem to blame the 10.4.9 os x update. i'm not sure if that could be it? i'm not sure if i should bother running a clean install and downgrading to 10.4.3

I am not able to upload or download any apps.  This has just happened since the 3rd of this month.

The iPad does not upload apps.

Please post a copy of the latest crash report.
Go to your Applications Folder and open your Utilities Folder. Open the application Console.
In the left-hand column, click on Crash Reporter.
Click on the small triangle under Crash Reporter in the l/h column and they will all be listed.
Scroll down to the latest Safari report and click on it.
Now click on the r/h column (which now only shows THAT crash report and then Command-a to copy it all.
Come back here and Command-v it to post it here!
