10 Gig connection

This seems that it should be simple, and I am probably overlooking something stupid.  Somebody please point it out to me.
Connecting a WS-C4948E-F with a SFP-10G-SR to an ASR1002 with a XFP-10G-MM-SR.
Using standard MM fiber.  Link will not come up.
I have connected the fiber between 2 XFP-10G-MM-SR on the ASR and the link comes up.  Between 2 XFP-10G-MM-SR on the switch and it comes up.  So my modules and my cable is fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Definetly both SFP's are compatible with each other. it might be possible that PHY controller on the ASR is in WAN mode. you can use the below command to check,
show controllers wanphy 1/1/0
Have you tried changing the port to lan mode?
Command:
hw-module subslot 0/0 enable lan
once you do the above the link should come up.

  • Question related to SFP, Fiber, and switches model Compatibility for Gigs Connections

    Hi everyone,
I am in the middle of a project where we are receiving a 2gig Internet connection from a service provider. I need to connect this to a switch , my question is related to what sfp, switch would be the most compatible. I was thinking about a 3750 switch with sfp modules, but i am not sure if a SFP 1000 sx is enough as we are receiving a 2 gig connection via fiber then I would need to use a 10G module, with 10G sfps... mm well i am very confuse... can anyone help me please in your experience with a similar situation
    Thanks.

A "2 gig" connection might mean a 10g logically limited to 2g, or it might mean the full duplex capacity of a gig link.
The SFP+ ports on 10g 3750X modules will support either a gig or 10g transceiver.  The SPF ports, on either 10g or gig modules will only support gig.

  • Do I need a domain controller onsite if I have a gig connection to datacenter

I know it used to be best practice to have a DC onsite at each site for your WAN...
However, with new bandwidth getting cheaper we have full gig connections between our datacenter and our hub sites.
Do you think it would be ok not have a DC / print server  onsite and have then go over the gig pipe for authentication and print services etc??? If the connection goes down they can't work at the remote sites anyway because everything they need is at
the data center...  (we use a hub and spoke topology.

Just to add, you can keep with what you have, which should work fine. Just to share past experiences, I worked as an Exchange admin for a pharma that had a fast and fat MPLS across the US and into Europe. Everything was under one AD Site, but they were wondering
why the Exchange servers were picking DCs in Europe. I explained that's because of the site design.
Sites do two things: localize logon/authentication traffic, and control replication traffic between DCs. If you want a client to use a local DC in its own subnet, and not go across the pipe to authenticate, etc, no matter how fast the pipe, you'll still
need to setup sites just to take advantage of authentication localization.

  • DCI 10 gig connection with Encryption

    Hi,
We are designing a 10 gig DCI interconnect between two DCs which are 800 miles apart in US. Please share your input on settig up a layer two link with data encryption.
I am trying to address the following questions:
Is there a distance limit for VSL solution and will it support 10 Gig?
Do IP MPLS offer 10 Gig connectivity across DCs (approximately 800 Miles in US) ?
Does Nexus support vPC with MACSec(802.1 AE) across the DC? If yes, how would it handle reassembling of  encrypted frames traversing across two separate links?
I understand MACSec will add approximately 32 bytes per each frame. What would be the approximate throughput degradation on a 10 Gig DCI with encryption?
Industry best practice on setting up encryption for 10 gig DCI links

  • 2 5508's connecting to 2 6500 switches

Looking to design for redundancy and mobility. My initial plan was to use LAG on both but I am confused on the setup because typcially all interfaces on these two switches are setup with HSRP. Does anybody have a matching configuration example they can share? Also looking to map multiple vlans to one SSID and using AD groups. Additional info is that this is for a large campus with multiple distribution areas but looking to just have consolidated WLC infrastructure at one location. Multiple GIG connections exist to all distribution points. Last note plan is to just use two of the 8 ports on each 5508.
All the guides aren't quite bringing together for me the best practice for this setup.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Well you must understand, that if the WLC1 fails, then there will be a temporary lose of service until the AP's on WLC1 fails to WLC2.  This is for local mode ap's and this means that all traffic will be tunneled back to the WLC's and the layer 3 subnet needs to reside on the 6500's.  If you have remote sites that you want ap's and maybe don't have over 50, you can setup the ap's in h-reap mode (flexconnect) and the subnet's the users get placed on is the local subnet at the remote site.  So in this scenario, if WLC1 goes down, and remote site 1 has ap's on WLC1, the ap's stay up and traffic still flows normally.  You have two options in h-reap mode.... centrally switched which means tunnel traffic back to the WLC or locally switched where traffic is switched locally at that site.  When AP's are in local mode, the hard failure of the WLC will always disrupt the client devices just for a little (minute or less) until the AP's move to the other WLC.  When WLC1 comes back online, the AP's will move back with little to no disruptions.
You will configure mobility between the two WLC's so that each WLC will know of clients that might roam to an AP on the other WLC.  This also is required for the AP's to know about the other WLC.

  • Does WCCP affect linespeed rate on 4948 10-gig model with Ipsvcs?

    Greetings,
I was asked to implement an "imperative" thing here in my office before our finalized gear shows up.  The solution is a 1-gig rated set of silverpeaks and some 4948's.  Does the linespeed of the 4948 drop with WCCP enabled?  I would like to utilize the 10 gig connections back to my WAN distribution and to the silverpeak, but the links on which the BGP / Leased line traverse are 1 gig.
I'm just checking that utilizing BGP and WCCP doesn't cause the actual line speed to drop to something weird like 850 megs like they do on some of the 39XX routers.
Anyone know this data or can point me to a document that says the throughput is <blah> - other than the datasheet that just says "wirespeed"?
         Thx, -PKil

Unfortunately, No. We had to punt on this particular eBook, which was supplied by another agency. As you can see, it was put together with Caibre.
I find Apple's error messages way too generic. They need to give you some clue, like a line number in a file, or something, to look at. Frustrating.

  • SRW2048 Gigabit connection problems

    Hi,
I have a SRW2048 connected back to a Cisco 6509 core switch.  For some reason, I cannot establish a gigabit connection with our computers.  Both Lenovo laptops and Dell desktops are failing; they always end up falling back and negotiating at 100/full.  The port used to uplink back to the 6509 seems to connect at gig, and the port status on both the 2048 and the 6509 indicate that there is a gig connection between them.  But any of my computers connected to the 2048 cannot get a gig connection.  Can anyone help??
    -Norm

Both the switch and the computer are set to auto-negotiate.  When I try to set the computer to a force auto-negotiate 1000 Mbps, it still doesn't work.  It keeps trying to connect but never succeeds.  The port light will light up with amber (gig) for a couple seconds and then turn off again, and it keeps cycling that way.

  • External HD randomly disconnects; sometimes doesn't connect at all.

This problem seemed to coincide with the recent firmware update. My external hard drive (Lacie rugged 500 gig, connected by firewire 800) often does not register when I connect to my computer. I hear the drive spinning etc..., but it does not show up on the desktop.
If it does connect, and I try to perform a time machine backup, it disconnects at some point during the process.
    Help me please. Thanks!

For a little while the HD still showed up in the System Profiler even after the icon disappeared from the desktop. I was trying to run disk utility but it froze during the verification process, and then every time I tried to go to FireWire on the Profiler I would get the spinning beach ball and have to force quit System Profiler.

  • Wired ports not connecting

Have a WRT600N that works fine on both wireless bands, but simply will not connect on any of the 4 wired ports. I've tried 2 different ethernet cables (both confirmed working via the modem), 2 different computers, 2 different OSes. Nothing. LEDs light up on both ends to indicate a gig connection, but adapter can't get an IP. Apadter status always shows zero bytes received (on BOTH computers). Weird thing is, it WILL get an IP if a machien is conencted via wire AND wireless; I assume the IP is somehow being assigned by conencting through the wireless link, as the wired adapter still shows zero B received.
I've done multiple resets to no avail.  I've read all the troubleshooting tips and other posts indicating similar problems. I've hit a wall and suspect that the router is physically hooped.
Anybody know something worth trying before I am force to buy a new one?

The reason why I'm asking you to disable the wireless is to avoid conflict while we troubleshoot your wired connection. If the wireless adapter obtains an IP from the router first, the wired connection might have trouble getting an IP from the router. This is for isolation purposes only.
If you want an easier path, upgrade your router's firmware. If you already did that, try re-flashing it.

  • Good GigE switch/router for not much coin?

Last piece of the puzzle: with three systems now, I want to up the ante a bit on my networking capability. Presently, my laptop connects via 802.11g (snore) through a combo DSL modem/hub/WAP, and the workstations connect via 100Mb Ethernet through the same. File transfers are painfully slow. Since all three systems have GigE connections, I'd like to utilize them to speed things up a bit. Any good suggestions for a basic router, hub, switch or whatever to connect these guys? Doesn't need to be anything fancy...

    Colin,
This is a simple swith that I use: Netgear GS608 8-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch. Look here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122111&Tpk=netgear%20gs108
I also have a HP 8 port managed switch, the Procurve 6108, but that is an altogether different price bracket.
For a router is use a DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn Annex B. See: http://www.draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=19

  • Slow transfer rate to time capsule - 2nd generation - mb pro 5ghz

    alright
have time capsule with dual networks, macbook pro with n enabled connected to 5ghz network with full bars, yet while copying files to the time capsule, it seems slow
    500kbs per second
about 7 min to copy a 744mb file to time capsule (according to finder)
time capsule connected via ethernet to 2wire 2701hg modem + wireless router ( wireless turned off )
    configure ipv4 using : dhcp
    ethernet wan port: automatic
connection sharing : share a public ip adress
    ipv6 : link local only
    wireless options
    country - mexico
    multicast rate - high
    transmit power - 100%
    use wide channels
    any ideas?
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
In the Manual Setup->Advanced->Logs and Statistics page of Airport Utility you'll find information on wireless signal quality for each client connected. Primarily, signal quality will determine the connection speed of your file transfers, the best you can do to improve things is to find a wireless channel with the least interference, Manual Setup->Wireless.
My Macbook Air connection is showing -66 Signal, -89 Noise, 122 Rate which gives me a wireless file transfer rate in bursts from 500kbps to 22Mbps. Time Capsule is not the fastest combo device, even file transfers over LAN Ethernet are around 50% slower than a regular Airport Extreme and I've found transfers to the disk from a GigE connected Mac Pro top out at around 60Mbps.
The Time Capsule is more useful as a convenience tool than speed I think so just be patient.

  • Question (noob) on Xserve

    Hi,
I'd like to know if there is a software for xserve that would have the same function as Dropbox -http://www.dropbox.com/- (remote backup and constant differential backup) for the user connected locally and remotely.
    Thanks,
    R

Assuming Mac clients you should also look into Portable Home Directories.
They have syncing at login and logout to sync the server-side copy of your account and you could use that to sync multiple computers across the network between places. All this assumes a good connected network, of course.
I would only use Time Machine over the network in someplace with good dependable GigE connections. I think the idea of having your home, work and laptop all back-up across the wire or ether to a central computer is a fantasy if your office is going out over a limited DSL line to your Xserve in another location.

  • 11.3.1 tuning JVM and tomcat

I will shortly be upgrading my 7 primary servers to 32gig of ram each.
Currently they have 8 gig and with the new diag screen (just upgraded to
11.3a) we easily can see this is woefully inadequate. Currently the schools
are shutdown and easily 95% of the computers are off and the servers are at
50% memory usage. I have 7 primaries handling 8000 devices. we did a pretty
good job of balancing the load evenly across the seven servers give or take.
That given does the tuning parameters referenced in the doc for Zen 11 still
hold true for 11.3.1? In reading it the test servers in the super lab were
using 16gig. If the docs still hold true can I I presume to double the
numbers for a 32gig server? The current server installation PDF I can't find
a mention of tuning. other than the OS ram needed is there a point of
diminishing returns as the values pass a certain point? SQL is external MSQL
2012. All in the same data center same switch. all gig connections.
JVM max threads for 16g is 600 can I go to how much with 32gig?
heap size of 4096 with 16g. how much suggested with 32gig?

    I don't really see a question here.......

  • Ethernet speeds from modem to Airport

    Hey guys,
My current modem/router is a Belkin with 10/100 Ethernet. But I am considering an Airport extreme/Time Capsule for it's GigE ports, Easy Hard Drive Sharing, and Setup, plus all the other selling points.
But I will need a new modem to go with that an Airport/Time Capsule. Or will I? The Belkin works fine - it's just on the slow side ethernet wise, and isn't great for hard drive sharing (1TB max drive size).
    So my question's are:
    1. If I use a Modem (Belkin, or a new one) with only a 10/100 Ethernet port, will that
    - Make my wifi any slower?
    - Make GigE connections to my Apple Router slower? (For internet, but also for streaming, NAS drives etc).
    2. Can anyone recommend a good modem to use with airport? (Preferably with GigE)
    3. If I use my Belkin router (Theoretical 300mbps, but seems to be 54mbps actual), and Airport extreme (Which I assume performs better) on the same network:
    - Will my network perform at "Belkin" or "Apple" speeds?
    - Will the Airport just Extend the network? Or will it be the main router on the network? (The APE is newer, and if I could turn off the Belkins routing, I would.)
    - Are there any technical/compatibility issues I should be aware of?
    4. Can anyone recommend other routers I could look into with similar/better features? For me to pick it over the Apple products, it would have to have some or all of these:
    - 1 More Ethernet port,
    - Faster wifi (450mbps)
    - Built in modem
    - USB 3 port
    - A MUCH lower price point (Don't care about $20 or $30, but if I could get a great router for $100 less...)
It MUST have a USB port for network storage, with no (Or very high) limitations on drive size (My Belkin only supports drives up to 1TB), GigE, and preferably easy setup, and the ability to pasword protect folders on attached Hard Drives would be awesome.
    5. Any inside info on an updated Airport soon? The Gen 5's are 15 months old now.
    Cheers!

    Hi ,
This is my first reply and I am tempted to reply to to you because I recently bought Airport Express and put in some effort setting it up.
         1) I don't thing modem will be a bottleneck in your internet speed. Just use the ethernet port of belkin router and connect it to Airpot using a ethernet cable.
         2) If you connect Airport to Belkin Router and configure it to bridge mode, it would just act as a modem and not wifi or we can say Airport would use the modem functionality of the Belkin router.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks

  • Apple 3.01 Streaming Issues.  Why?

    Just did a scientific experiment:
Setup: iMac Core Duo with 2 gigs ram. Connected by 802.11G (no N on the non core2duo). iTunes library is stored on external 1Tb drive over USB2. 80 gigs of music. Apple TV 3.01 40 gig connected to DLINK 802.11 G/N router by ethernet 100. only 10 gigs of music on Apple TV. The other 22gigs are photos.
Apple TV as it first sat today:
Apple TV harddrive is COMPLETELY full. Tried the Apple TV as it stood to stream music. Waited 2 minutes for song. Gave up waiting after screen saved kicked in.
Restored to factory Apple TV 2.0
Apple TV hard drive erased. Streamed music within 10 seconds. 1 skip during 2 hours of play, otherwise, no problems.
    Updated to Apple 3.01
Apple TV hard drive still empty. Waited 2 minutes for song. Gave up waiting after screen saver kicked in.
Constants: Network Connection. Internet usage on iMac. iTunes Version (9.02). Applications running on iMac. Physical Connections on both iMac and AppleTV. iMac distance to router.
Variables: AppleTV hard drive content. AppleTV Operating System Version.
Conclusion? Apple TV streaming is not as good in 3.01 as 2.0
    WHY?!?!?!?!

I was going to add, in all three steps, the Library is Primary (Winston's Nomenclature).
Also, in all three cases, the library was custom synced. steps 2 and 3 I had custom synced, but turned off everything (so I didn't need to wait for anything to sync)
Also, in all setups, the Apple TV is connected to a CRT HDTV by Component Cable
