10 Gigabit Ethernet Wan PHY vs LAN PHY

hello,
Is it possible to connect a 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN PHY client interface (12xxx or 76xx) on a 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN PHY port of provider équipment (Nortel 5200) ?
what about the existence of 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN PHY interface on 12xxx or 76xx plateform ?
thank you in advance

The Cisco ONS 15454 MSTP DWDM system offers a a 10Gbps transponder card supporting a 10GE LAN PHY client interface.

    Hello,
We can think of 10GE LAN as a usual Ethernet we used to see.
10GE WAN uses SONET/SDH  framing instead and hence can be directly connected to OC-192c/STM-64 interfaces at a carrier network. For diagnostics 10GE WAN PHY makes use of the SONET overhead bits to detect :
    - Loss of signal
    - Coding violations
    - Framing errors/ loss of frame
    - Errored seconds
    - Severely errored seconds
    - Loss of synchronization (not needed) •             Same Error/ performance monitoring
    - B1, B2, B3
    - J0, J1
    Same Defect/ Alarms
    - FEBE
    - RDI
    - AIS

  • What's the maximum LAN speed with the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter on my MacBook Pro?

While I was at Yodobashi Camera yesterday, I got a Thunderbolt to Gigabit ethernet adapter for my MacBook Pro. I figure, since I'm paying for the high speed fiber optic (Sony Nuro), why limit my self to wi-fi speeds at home?
Before connecting the adapter, via wi-fi it the speed was 143.8 Mbps down and 181.5 Mbps up.
After connecting the adapter and making a direct LAN connection to the router, the speed is 783.2 Mbps down and 940.1 Mbps up.
I'm certainly happy with the speed, but since Sony Nuro is supposed to be 2 Gbps down and 1 Gbps up I was wondering what the maximum possible is with this computer and adapter. Before asking the provider I was curious what the maximum specs where.
    The ether cable is a 3 m category 6.
    Thanks,
    doug

It's not really your computer that is getting the 2Gbps download - it is the router/ modem.
If you hooked better/ different hardware up you could probably push those speeds around your network too. The trouble is that most residential hardware is gigabit ethernet not fibre. Fibre cards & cable are expensive in comparison.
The existing hardware may allow you to 'bond or aggregate' multiple ethernet connections into one link to get more speed over ethernet. Obviously this requires more complex routers, switches & a network admin to set it up
Those speeds sound nice, this bottleneck will mean that other devices on you network can't choke up the whole connection & make other users sad.

  • Registering thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter MAC-adress in the company LAN

    Dear community,
I have a technical question regarding the thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter!
In our company the current situation is to register the MAC-Address of every ethernet port which wants to join the local area network...so far so "normal"
The fact that the Apple notebooks have no longer an built-in ethernet port makes it complicated regarding security standards!
Is it correct that when I register the MAC-Address of an ethernet adapter to our company LAN I'm free to plugin every MacBook via Thunderbolt afterwards?  There's is no "connection" between the adapter and a certain MacBook?
    That doesn't sound very secure...
Can someone answer my question or does anyone have the same problem and found a workaround?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dennis

In OS X Yosemite, is there option to enable 802.3ad (aka LACP) to bond the interfaces?
Or is it only achievable via command line configuration?
Yes it is exactly the same process as Mavericks (and earlier). You open System Preferences, click on Network, then at the bottom click on the small gear symbol (unlock the padlock first if needed), and then select Manage Virtual Interfaces. You then add a new Link Aggregate interface which will be your bonded network interfaces.
LACP is the only type of bonding Apple support.

  • CISCO XENPAK-10GB-LW (WAN PHY)

    hi,
do you know if installing the CISCO XENPAK-10GB-LW (WAN PHY) you need a SONET/SDH multiplexer or you can connect it directly to the SDH network?
    any document explaining it?
    thanks

The WAN PHY module will appear to your SDH network as a SONET tributary interface. Its signal will need to be carried intact as an OC-192 (approximately 10 Gbps) across the SDH network since it's not a bunch of STS payloads but rather a single 10 Gbps IP stream encapsulated in SONET framing. Other than that, it should be able to feed your SDH network's ADM just fine (given attention to your optical power levels, etc.).
Hope this helps, please rate helpful posts.

  • 10GE-WAN-PHY to STM-64

    Hello,
I would be grateful if anyone can help me with this problem.
Is it possible to interconnect 10GE WAN-PHY port on router to STM-64 port on multiplexer?
Is it generaly allowed to inerconnect SDH and SONET (or their frames and signals are not compatibile) i.e oc-192 and STM-64?
I have DWDM with four STM-16/OTU-1 ports. I've planned to multiplex those 4 ports to one STM-64 and connect it to 10GE WAN-PHY router port.
    (router)10GE-WAN-PHY-----STM-64/OTU-2 (multiplexer) 4xSTM-16/OTU-1-----4xSTM16/OTU-1(dwdm).
Is it feasible or I need some additional equipment?
    thanks in advance,
    A.

    1) When I connect 10GE WAN-PHY router port to STM-64 box, will router send STM-64 frames, or it has different frames then SDH?
Is the 10GE WAN-PHY also compatibile with OC-192?
Yes it sends STM-64 frames (but it doesnot have network management features which SONET/SDH STM64 interface have) See this link
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps6267/product_data_sheet0900aecd80715dc5.html
So  one to connect to a DWDM STM 64 /SONET- 192 trasponder which then makes  a proper SDH/SONET frame with all those management bytes.
Same port can be either used for STM 64 or SONET 192. This STM64/SONET192 are still made from smaller SDH/SONET frames
    2) Do you know if Cisco has a box that can  interface two boxes  STM64----OC192 (or OC-3 --- STM-1)? Which type of  box is that generaly?
Are you crossing  continent with your own infrastruture , service provider have  crossconnect that do that for them this conversionTellabs,Fujitsu etc  RAD for smaller line rates ? Cisco have boxes which either can be SDH or  SONET but see this link. Might be helpful.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r5_0/planning/guide/r50sdhtr.pdf
    3) (router)10GE-WAN-PHY-----STM-64/OTU-2 (SDH/SONET box) 4xSTM-16/OTU-1-----4xSTM16/OTU-1(dwdm).
I   wasn't clear enough in my previous post. I was thinking to put box   (multiplexer) between router and DWDM, which on one side toward router   will have STM-64 and toward DWDM will have four STM-16 ports.
Is the scheme that I corrected now above in point 3) allowed?
You  can have point to point link where STM 64 are demultiplexed to STM 16.  This is the way how 100G are trasnported over 10 x 10G. I dont see any  benefit on a extra box with point to point link.
But If this 10GEWAN is your hub and have spokes which have router with STM 16 interface, then you can make 4 STM 16 pipes. All these you are trying to achieve are possible but you may need extra equipments to get the result.
For one more opinion you can consult with Solution specialist from Cisco. Generally all marketing guys try to sell more than what you need.

  • Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

If you use ethernet to connect the two AirPort Extremes together, you'll have Gigabit speeds available at all of the ethernet ports on both routers.
If you connect the second AirPort Extreme using wireless only and configure the Extreme to "extend a wireless network", then the maximum speeds that the second router can attain will be limited to the capability of the wireless connection. So, if you connect at normal "n" wireless speeds of say 130 Mbps, that will be the maximum speed available at the ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
I think you can easily see the difference between Gigabit ethernet, which is 1000 Mbps compared to "n" wireless at 130 Mbps. Even if you can manage to connect at 5 GHz speeds for wireless, the max speed will be in the 300 Mbps range, more than 3 times slower than Gigabit ethernet. Normal "n" speeds will be about 7 times slower than ethernet.
For streaming high definition video and other demanding sources, you'll need as much bandwidth (speed) as you can get. Ethernet is always the best choice if you can possibly use it. And...there's no wireless interference on an ethernet connection.

  • How do I maximize LAN speeds using Gigabit Ethernet, jumbo frames?

I move a lot of large files (RAW photos, music and video) around my internal network, and I'm trying to squeeze out the fastest transfer speeds possible. My question has to do both with decisions about hardware and what settings to use once it's all hooked up.
This is what I have so far:
    -- imac 3.06GHz, macbook pro 2.53GHz
-- Cisco gigabit smart switch capable of jumbo frames
-- Buffalo Terastation Duo NAS (network attached storage), also capable of Gbit and jumbo frames
-- All wired up with either cat6 or cat53e.
-- The sizes of the files I'm moving would include large #s of files at either 15MB (photos), 7MB (music), 1-2GB (video) and 650MB (also video).
-- jumbo frames have been enabled in the settings of the macs, the switch and the buffalo HD.
-- I've played with various settings of simultaneous connections (more of a help with smaller files), no real difference
-- Network utility shows the ethernet set to Gbit, with no errors or collisions.
-- have tried both ftp and the finder's drap and drop
-- also, whenever I'm doing a major move of data, I kick my family off the network, so there is no other traffic that should be interfering.
Even with all that, I'm still lucky to get transfer speeds at 15-20mbps, but more commonly at around 10. The other odd thing I've encountered while trying to up my speeds, is that I might start out a transfer at maybe 60mbps, it will maintain that for about 30-60sec and then it appears to ramp itself down, sometimes to as low as 1-5mbps. I'm starting to think my network is mocking me
I also have a dual band (2.4/5) wireless n router (not jumbo frame capable), but I'm assuming wired is going to trump wireless? (NOTE: in my tests, I have disabled wireless to force the connection through the ethernet).
Can anyone help with suggestions, and/or suggest a strong networking reference book with emphasis on mac? I'm willing to invest in additional equipment within reason.
    Thanks in advance!
    juliana

I'm going to pick and choose to answer just a few of the items you have listed. Hopefully others will address other items.
    • This setup was getting me speeds as high as 10-15MB/sec, and as low as 5-6MB/sec when I was transferring video files around 1-2 GB in size
I would think a single large file would get the best sustained transfer rates, as you have less create new file overhead on the destination device. It is disturbing that the large files transfer at a slower rate.
    • Would a RAID0 config get me faster write speeds than RAID1? I have another NAS that can do other RAID configs, which is fastest as far as write times?
RAID0 (Striped) is generally faster, as the I/O is spread across 2 disks.
RAID1 is mirrored, so you can not free the buffer until the same data is on BOTH disks. The disks are NOT going to be in rotational sync, so at least one of the disks will have to wait longer for the write sectors to move under the write heads.
But RAID1 gives you redundency. RAID0 has not redundency. And you can NOT switch back and forth between the 2 without reformatting your disks, so if you choose RAID0, you do not get redundency unless you provide your own via a backup device for your NAS.
    • what is the most efficient transfer protocol? ftp? smb? something else? And am I better off invoking the protocol from the terminal, or is the overhead of an app-based client negligible?
Test the different transfers using a large file (100's of MB or a GB sized file would be good as a test file).
I've had good file transfers with AFP file sharing, but not knowing anything about your NAS, I do not know if it supports AFP, and if it does, whether it is a good implementation.
If your NAS supports ssh, then I would try scp instead of ftp. scp is like using cp only it works over the network.
If your NAS support rsync, that would be even better, as it has the ability to just copy files that are either NOT on the destination or update files which have changed, but leave the matching files alone.
This would help in situations where you cannot copy everything all at once.
But no matter what you choose, you should measure your performance so you choose something that is good enough.
    • If a client is fine, does anyone have a suggestion as to best one for speed? Doesn't have to be free -- I don't mind supporting good software.
Again just test what you have.
    • Whats a good number to allow for simultaneous connections, given the number of files and their size?
If the bottleneck is the NAS, then adding more I/O that will force the disk heads to move away from the current file being written will just slow things down.
But try 2 connections and measure your performance. If it gets better, then maybe the NAS is not the bottleneck.
    • What question am I not asking?
You should try using another system as a test destination device in the network setup to see if it gets better, worse, or the same throughput as the NAS. You need to see about changing things in your setup to isolate where the problem might be.
Also do not rule out bad ethernet cables, so switch them out as well. For example, there was a time I tried to use Gigabit ethernet, but could only get 100BaseT. I even purchased a new gigabit switch, thinking the 1st was just not up to the task. It turned out I had a cheap ethernet cable that only had 4 wires instead of 8 and was not capable of gigabit speeds. An ethernet cable that has a broken wire or connector could exhibit similar performance issues.
So change anything and everything in your setup, one item at a time and use the same test so you have a pear to pear comparision.

  • Will any Cat5 Ethernet cables work equally well for Gigabit ethernet ports?

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I must. Are some Cat 5 Ethernet cables designed for Gigabit Ethernet? The Airport Extreme Base Station(b/g) uses Gigabit Ethernet for its LAN and WAN ports. I think my Comcast modem's single Ethernet port does, also. Currently, I use a Cat 5 100Mbs cable to connect the modem to the AEBS. So, I'm wondering if I can get faster throughput with a Cat 5 1000Mbs cable (if such a thing exists).

In addition to Bob's comments, it's important to understand that Gigabit Ethernet requires using all four pairs of wires inside the cable ... regardless of whether that cable is CAT-5, CAT-5e, or CAT-6 certified. The real difference of the categories is how high of a frequency can they support. For example CAT-6 is rated for 10 Gigabit traffic. It's not that CAT-5 won't work, but it's not guaranteed to do so.
If you have any Ethernet runs in home that is supplying connections for both data & phone lines on the same cable, you will NOT achieve Gigabit speeds on those cables as the installer used at least one of the necessary pairs for the phone line.

  • How to use thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter

hi mates. i just purchase the Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter last week for my Mac Book Pro Retina. but i have no idea how it work. i tried just plug in the adapter and the LAN cable in but no luck...
    Any idea how it works?

Plug in the Adapter and the cable to the adapter and the other end of the cable to a switch or router then Reboot the system. Then check the Network section in System Preferences to see if the Ethernet shows up. If it does your done. If not then you have a bad adapter, a bad cable, both bad adapter and cable or the Thunderbolt port is bad.
Or at the last a corrupted install of OS X.

He won't want to do that. He already has a modem so that is doing the PPPoE related stuff. All he would need is IP conectivity. You would probably want to configure the AE to:
    Create a wireless network.
Then configure it to dole out DHCP addresses and presumably NAT too.
This is assuming that your connection is like this:
    modem-->AEBS-->LAN/WLAN
If you already have a router connection to the modem, or the modem is a router, i.e. DHCP enabled, then just turn on bridging but the rest should be fine.

  • Nothing is connected to the ethernet WAN port

I have a 5th generation AEBS and FTTH. When I plug it into the wall, it reports that nothing is connected to the ethernet WAN port, but if I plug my MBP into the wall I get an IP address and can hit the Internet just fine.
I called tech support and they said that everything looks great from their end, and that there is nothing that they can do.
What I have found is that if I plug the cable from the wall into a gigabit switch, and then plug the AEBS into the switch, everything works fine!
Any idea what can be going on? TIA!

This is increasingly a problem.. the AEBS is not actually negoiating the speed correctly with the ONT supplied by the ISP.. it happens a lot with cable modems as well.
Using the switch allows the two devices to negoiate speed correctly.
You can do the same thing with old utility..
Install 5.6 utility on your computer. Here is a method.. there are others.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
Now with a real utility instead of the toyland edition you can do something about the WAN speed.
Set to either 100mbit full duplex .. that would be my first option.. and second is 100mbit half duplex.
Another alternative just popped up.. buy a crossover ethernet cable.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23236139?ac_cid=tw123456#23236139
These cables are no longer required with modern equipment but you will find stores still stock them. For some strange reason.. in the one case reported that worked.. this indicates that the TC has some fundamental port issues.. and the mdix is not working correctly which is why the switch or manually setting port speed does.

  • Airport Utility: Ethernet WAN Port setting

In Airport Utility > Internet > Internet Connection .. is a property called "Ethernet WAN Port". The default setting is "Automatic (Default)".
When I set this property to "1000 Mbps/Full Duplex" Airport Utility throws two interesting errors:
    1) You have nothing plugged into your WAN port (But I do have my Comcast modem plugged in there)
    2) You don't have internet.
Upon Visual inspection of the Comcast modem, my IP connection to the house is gone. Specifically the green "PC" light is off.
Now, when I change this property back to "Automatic (Default)" my IP connection comes back again.
Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on why this is? I should also mention one more interesting thing ...
When downloading a 40min (1 hour TV show) from iTunes it takes 15 minutes when my Mac is direct connected to the Comcast modem and 3 hours when my Mac is connected to the AEBS. I'm trying to change the "Ethernet WAN" property to 1000 Mbps/Full Duplex to ensure smooth connection from Mac to AEBS to Comcast Modme to Internet.
    Thanks!

    Bob, thanks. Makes sense.
Do you have a notion of why the Comcast speed is cut when AEBS is connected to it vs. when the MacBookPro is directly connected to it?
Example: Download 1.1GB file from iTunes (Episode 1 of Lost) - a 40 minute TV show
    Test 1: MacBookPro > WiFi (802.11n) > AEBS > Comcast Modem = 3 Hours (longer than show!)
    Test 2: MacBookPro > Ethernet > AEBS > Comcast Modem = 3 Hours
    Test 3: MacBookPro > Ethernet > Gigabit Switch > AEBS > Comcast Modem = 3 Hours
    Test 4: MacBookPro > Ethernet > Comcast Modem = 15 MINUTES
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Using DynDNS and Sharing disks over Ethernet WAN port

I am having issues accessing the AirDisk from outside my LAN. So here are the steps that I have taken:
In the AirPort Utility, I enable "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port".
Created a DynDNS account at http://www.dyndns.com so my hostname points to my IP address.
After reading a bunch of threads, mainly this one below, there are a few conflicting issues.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4105319
Someone mentioned you have to Setup Port Mapping to open up Personal File Sharing. But another said you don't have to set up Port Mapping. Well if you do, you're gonna run into a problem. This Apple article states you have to use a different port: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305183
Someone said Remote Access only works via AFP not via SMB. Is this true?
Also do I have to enter my DynDNS hostname into the wide area bonour tab in the advanced tab?
    What am I doing wrong?
Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Airport Extreme N

Are you aware of any DynDNS-like service that support Wide Area Bonjour?
None at the moment. One might hope that Apple's .Mac service would make use of it, but I don't think Apple has announced anything about that possibility.
Or as a practical matter is this a technology that only appears at the moment in private installations of OS X Server?
I've found the version of dnsextd that ships in Mac OS X 10.4 (not just the server version) to be a bit flaky. One hopes it will work a lot better in Mac OS X 10.5.
But since the AEBS doesn't support DynDNS update, as other routers do, it ends up requiring a server after all.
Wouldn't it be nice if DynDNS and similar services allowed you to configure DNS resource records manually? That way, it wouldn't matter what your home gateway/fileserver was capable of doing— you could just edit your DNS zone accordingly.
