10 white iMacs (A1195) all totally dead together. Do they have a built-in suicide date ?

Hi all
I have 10 white model A1195 iMacs spread throughout 3 different buildings at a school. On returning from 2 weeks break ALL of these machines are TOTALLY DEAD. Power button does nothing at all. Disconnect / reconnect power cord does nothing. Only these machines are affected. All my silver iMacs, and all the old eMacs are working as before. I've had to dig out a bunch of mouldy old eMacs from the dungeons to keep the classroom going! Using same power cords, sockets, k/b's etc. so it's definitely the white machines themselves.
Any ideas out there . . ??
Cheers,
Aunty

If they were without power for a prolonged period of time, it's possible their NVRAM batteries died. Assuming they were all the same age it is entirely possible for them to die within days or even hours of one other.
It uses an inexpensive CR2032 battery and replacement is simple.

You have to look at the email protocol being used.  the Apple email system uses IMAP, does Tinyworld use IMAP or POP?
Does the email system permit delivery receipts to be requested?
Just some of the things one needs to determine from the information provided by the email service provider.

Once the movie has completey download, having an Internet connection is no longer necessary. It would be wise to test the movie before you leave, though, in case of glitches.

  • Need help my contact are merging together if they have the same name

If I enter in a new contact with the same first name my phone automatically links to another person with the same name in my contact. This happens even if I put a different company name so I know the difference between Jeff at car dealer and Jeff landscaper. Can anyone guide me how to fix this please.

    1. Objects don't have names. The only name a <tt>JButton</tt> might have is the '<tt>name</tt>' property which is set using <tt>setName(...)</tt>
    2. Add an anonymous <tt>ActionListener</tt> to the <tt>JButton</tt> in the same method that you create it. In general, and unless hugely justified by the program design, avoid 'switchboard' listeners that require to identify the source of the event.

  • IPhone totally dead; DO NOT update to 2.1 if you are on O2 in the UK

I have moved from happily using the phone on 2.0.2, and using Mail (MM) and Safari properly this afternoon to a total shutdown
Like most of you, I have waited eagerly to upgrade to 2.1. The moment I upgraded, within seconds of 'testing' the phone via sending a test email to myself at work, the signal bar went from the 'pretty new 3G' to No Signal. Since then, it has been going from either full signal 3G to No Signal. Safari and Mail has also gone from full functionality to no connection (even though it says full signal 3G on the phone). Voice services has gone from bad to now non-existent. Even with full signal 3G, I was not able to call out or receive calls.
I've been on the phone with 02 iPhone tech support and can confirm that they have not been briefed at all that today's the day for 2.1!! Through all matter of trouble shooting, they have no idea apart to say that it's probably my phone and it's definitely got to be the upgrade as it was working just minutes before
So... now I do not have an iPhone anymore....
Have tried resetting restoring, every other thing.... and am still trying...

    My story.
We (my wife and me) have an Iphone 3G. After really being eager for the update (especially for battery stamina) I updated both Iphones with Itunes 8 because that was required. After the update both iphones where completely dead. So I tried the restore function in Itunes. After unpacking the software progression menu, the restoring was in progress. The restoring went to appoximately 2/3 of the progression menu and that collapsed... The message was something like "could not restore unknown error -6"
After restartin over and over again trying to reboot both mac and Iphones, trying reboot with option key.. I have done really everything (at that point I knew that was useless but still kept on trying)
My sollution was the following.... I released the connection form the iphones and plugged the USB cables into a HP laptop running windows XP. Downloaded itunes 8. Then itunes mentioned the update so I ran the update. After this it was really easy to bring back the Iphones back to life (THANK YOU MICROSOFT) of course both iphones now contained the standard installation stuff... (please note that installation will take up to 30 minutes for one Iphone)
After reanimating the iphone through my windows laptop I again connected the iphones to the Imac again. At this point the itunes in Imac asked to bring backup to the iphone.
And it all worked out fine...
I HOPE THIS WORKS OUT FOR ALL OF YOU..
After the Iphone plackout I tried to call Apple, their automated message directed me to the dutch telecom provide Tmobile. They where NOT prepared. The very nice guy on the telephone said "i will transfer you to our special Iphone service dept.... 10 seconds the guy came back that the Iphone department knew about the problem and I needed to bring the Iphones in for repair. I am a paying customer for two Iphones but aparrently I am not good enough to talk to...... I solved this problem while they pay people to bring me the solution that do not even want to talk to me....

  • White iMac (2006) and Mountain Lion

I have a white iMac (2006) running 10.6.8 and I have software I want to use on it that requires 10.7. I called Apple and the support guy said as long as I have 3-gig of RAM I can go ahead and install Mountain Lion. When I go to the App Store, it says that my machine cannot support Mountain Lion so it won't let me download it.
This is really frustrating. Any suggestions?

To Upgrade to Mountain Lion... Your Mac must be one of the following models:
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

  • 20" white iMac: lines on screen

Ever since installing Snow leopard on my 20" 2.16 Ghz white iMac I get strange lines across my screen when I do things like opening a Finder window or change the screen resolution. Any suggestions appreciated.

    I have iMac (Early 2006) http://support.apple.com/kb/SP35
This issue first occurred when I upgraded to 10.5. And now after 2 days running (or - trying to run) Snow Leo I can say - no improvement. I have lines and other shapes, all across the display. Always. Anyways - maybe You'd feel better about Your situation when I told that this issue leads to total hang and thus "hard restart" as only solution. Both on 10.5 and 10.6 it's happening about 6 times. A day. But You're not alone http://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/2006imac_graphics_card_crashfreeze and as Richard said - just google up.

  • 10.6.4 and Aperture 3.0.3 White iMac

The issues appear to be fixed. A big thanks to Apple for making this right. I, for one, thought we 6,1 iMac owners were left for dead in the water on this one.
I downloaded the combo update ( over 850mb) rather than perform a software update. I upgraded with this combo update directly from 10.6.2.. Everything appears to work without a hitch.
Again, the Apple/Aperture team deserve a lot of thanks.

I have the 6,1 7300gt and frankly, it runs just fine with Aperture 3 and 4gb of RAM. It is true that only 3GB is recognized, but this hasn't been a huge concern for me to date. I can say that the 7600gt is a very good performer relatively speaking and performs just as well as the ATI 2600HD cards in the next generation iMac (first alum. imac). That said, to swap cards (I have taken apart my iMac, replaced the HD, cleaned the fans, checked parts/connections, pulled the screen, unscrewed the mother board and pulled it out to inspect capacitors, replaced the logic board battery, etc...) is not so easy. You will actually have to disassemble a large portion of the machine and be prepared for a little heartache. I would say a first timer with technical ability will be in there for about 2 hours start to finish. Though two hours is for someone who is somewhat familiar with the iMac innards. If you go this route, allot yourself several hours of worry free, pressure free time. Ground yourself and eliminate all static electricity. The HD replacement should take all of about 10 minutes. The RAM about 2 minutes. I have no doubt that the performance of the machine will improve with the following:
Fast HD with lots of cache....I use a seagate 7200 32MB cache and it runs MUCH faster than the original (with only 8gb of cache I believe). The seagate 2 TB drive with 64MB of cache flies....my buddy replaced this in his first gen aluminum iMac.
The RAM is the next best improvement to the machine. Snow Leopard and Aperture require the full 3GB you can install to work best.
The next is a tip for 6.1 users: Aperture runs best when the only program open on these machines. Not to say it will not work with other programs running; but do not expect to be working in a virtual machine, reading mail, browsing the web, ripping a movie and running APerture together at the same time with great results.
The graphics card is the next big improvement. It will help you browse through photos full screen quicker and some types of edits of photos are faster, though I have to say, for my work I do not find this to slow me down in my work flow. Interestingly, I ran lightroom 3 beta on my 7300gt and edits were instant fast. For now, I slide the adjustment and the results appear fairly quickly. Again, I have no complaints with this new fix. Your timing re:10.6.4 is impeccable.

  • Phone used in swimming pool for less than a minute, now totally dead.

    Hi there,
One of the features which made me buy the Z3 was its apparent waterproofness. However, the first time I put the phone under water (in a swimming pool) was also the last - and the last time I've been able to use the phone.
I only took a few shots and the phone was submerged for probably no more than 30 seconds total. I checked all the flaps to ensure it was sealed before putting it under but almost immediately the screen started to fade and the phone became almost totally unresponsive. To turn the screen on I had to press the shutter button as the main one did nothing. I rinsed it under tap water and left it to dry but after coming back to it the phone (or screen at least) was dead.
Two days later the phone started making some noises (like low battery, but more erratic over a few minutes) but it's still totally dead. A red LED comes on if you put in a power cable and holding the volume and power button together for a few seconds leads to 3 rapid vibrations but still nothing.
What's the process for getting Sony to check this out and (I hope) repair or replace the phone? I'm in Ireland.
I've had the phone a couple of months and it's been great up to now. It seems this is a common problem and the average response from Sony seems pretty depressing.

You need to either return your device to the place of purchase or contact Xperia care and ask for a pressure and or vacuum test be carried out http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

have a blue /white iMac G3 and when i turn it on a flashing and mac folder began flashing. i have tried everything in resetting nvram holding command option and p and r keys also of key . I remover the old battery it had no voltage rest cuda button same flashing Question mark and mac face. I do not have any of the original cds, if anyone has any would appricate a copy of these cds if all possible unless someone has any other sugguestions NEED HELP PLEASE. I have a ImacG5 and tried loading the operating disc to see if it would boot up no luck

    Hi, abelmichael -
The information Kappy gave you in your other thread is correct - the flashing icons when you try to boot indicate the machine can not find a valid OS from which to boot.
That can be caused by a weak or dead internal battery. You said you checked the battery, and it was dead - you did not mention whther you had replaced it. If you have not yet replaced it with a fresh one, do so before going any further with trouble-shooting. Reset the CUDA again when replacing the battery.
If that machine had had OSX on it previously, then its firmware has probably been updated, and you can install OSX on it again.
If it did not have OSX on it previously, and if you are not sure that the firmware on it has been updated, do not try to install OSX on it. IN the case of early iMacs, just booting the machine to OSX when the firmware has not been updated can result in loss of video.
You can get any firmware update needed for a CRT iMac from here -

  • I've Just migrated my mac to a new iMac and CS5 is dead

I've Just migrated my mac to a new iMac and CS5 is dead, I can't uninstall it or do anything with it. When I try to load an application it just crashes (I'm guessing because it needs registering on my new machine) and I can't uninstall it.
I've been using CS5 for the past three years, and contemplating getting Creative Cloud. The problem is, it looks like I didn't every properly register CS5 with my Adobe ID, the software package was a download from a thrid party seller, and the email account the sent all the registration info to is no longer in use. . .
When I try to use Application Manager to uninstall it just tells me I need application manager and gives me a link to Adobe's website to download it. I download it, install it, try again, same result, tells me I need to download it. . .
    Frustrating.
Any help greatly appreciated, I'm currently completely stuck!

  • Are the screens on white iMac 20" better than those on new 24"?

I have read so much about the troubles with the 20" and 24" Aluminum iMac screens that I'm afraid to buy one now, and was thinking of buying a refurb'd white (plastic) iMac from Apple. Is the screen tech in the white version better than that in the 24" Alum? I have an old 2.0 white iMac and have never had any trouble with the screen at all.

    Pier Rodelon wrote:
Thanks for these pix. I have two more questions,
    1) Previous poster suggests that specs for the white iMac screens were lower
than specs for ALU iMac screens--is this true and in what particulars?
Other than viewing angle and brightness, Apple doesn't publish any meaningful
    screen specs.
The ALU screens are a little brighter -- entirely too bright -- and they don't have
sufficient adjustment range to reduce the brightness for comfortable viewing with
    normal home lighting levels.
The 20" ALU viewing angle specs are much poorer than the white 20" or any of
the 24" models. In practice, the difference is easily noticable even to the most
    casual observer.
    2) Does the 24" white iMac have the same screen that the 20" white iMac has?
All 24" iMacs have expensive S-IPS LCD panels. That's the same basic technology
and from the same manufacturer as the Apple Cinema Displays. (As discussed
previously, some (many?) 24" ALUs have/had problems with uneven backlighting.)
    Some white 20" units use exactly the same S-IPS panel as 20" Cinema Displays;
some others came with an excellent-quality S-PVA display. I believe all 20" iMacs,
at least as far back as the G5 PPC, used similarly high-quality (gorgeous!) panels.
The 20" ALU iMacs all have much lower-quality TN panels (from various sources).
The 17" white Intel iMacs also use the lower-quality TN panels.
To see what display you currently have, cut-n-paste the following command line
into Terminal.app -- then look it up in the panel database at tftcentral.co.uk:
    ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/\[^<\]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
I don't know if the 24" white iMac refurb would be a better choice than the 20"
    white (or the 20/24" ALU).
IMO, there's no contest in 20" size -- the white iMac displays are vastly superior.
If you're lucky enough to get a good display, the ALU 24" is very attractive; OTOH,
I have no performance complaints with my white 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo -- and it
was $600 less than my 24" ALU reject.

  • HT201263 iPhone 4S totally dead

Hi.. Last night before going to sleep my iphone4S was about 5% charge and plugged on the charger but instead for charging, it was discharging very quickly till it shutted down and screen got black and no red bar appearing whenever i click the home lor the power button.. Thought it was nothing cause i was so  sleepy and left it charging till this morning, i found my iphone dead with nothing appearing on the screen even if i press the power or home button, totally dead.. Ive tried to plug it on my pc(where i usually sync my iphone) and also tried to press the home and power button to exit DFU like i used to do but nothing happened.. I also tried plugging my charger to my ipad and it works on my ipad and even trying my ipad charger to my iphone but still the same..
I really need my phone for all of my contacts and some lists that are saved in the notes, so hope u can help me with this problem.. I really love my iphone so badly and i really need it..

I also got this same problem like u. I have an iphone 4s, after updating ios 7 it was good for about 3 days.  Then after 3 days suddenly my phone automatically switched off and i was unable to switch it on. Besides the phone was not taking charge from the socket.  And also was not connecting to itunes. Then i pressed the home and switch button for about 7 seconds and turned it completely off. And now after 2 days this afternoon i tried to switch on the phone.  And it was just a miracle that my phone automatically started to work. And now um enjoying my phone then ever.
I think u should try it like me hope that will fine.
