100% reduction in standby power for DVR, etc. Who do I contact?

Our company is CSI Assoc. (we perform direct certification assistance and product homologation type approvals for electronics and telecommunications products). One of our strategic business partners has invented a circuit chip. It will eliminate the standby power consumption in all electronics equipment. Please note - NOT REDUCE standby power but ELIMINATE standby power. This will work on all electronics that have vampire or standby power. TV, DVR, DVD, microwave ovens, X-box, etc. Also chargers of all kinds for power tools, personal hygiene products, cell phones, etc.
The Environmental Protection Agency plans to strengthen its Energy Star standards by 2013. Some of today's boxes have obtained the Energy Star seal and do not possess standby or sleep modes. But according to Noah Horowitz, senior scientist at the natural resources council, many of these boxes have an on/off button that just dims the clock and doesn't significantly decrease power use. Also, he noted that cable boxes are not designed to be turned on and off entirely, but adjusting the software over a cable could greatly improve energy efficiency.
As of September 1, average electricity consumption of Energy Star qualified products are to drop to 97 kilowatt hours a year from about 138, and by the middle of 2013, they must decrease to 29 kilowatt hours per year. Cisco says it plans to offer new box models this year that will comply with the new regulations by cutting energy consumption by 25 percent. It will do this by adding a standby mode, but not a sleep mode.
To combat the problem of phantom load consumption (aka standby power), the engineers have invented a unique power circuit which uses zero standby power. We are currently in the initial process of designing the circuit into chip form and for a limited time we are strategically seeking a select handful of companies interested in providing test verification assistance.
I am not sure who at Cisco, or other companies if you have contacts, that I should contact to see if they are interested is working with us on this trial program. Our business partners stated any participant would be in an advanced market position with a contractual period of exclusivity.
As you know the hardest part of this process is figuring our who to contact. Any assitance you could offer would be appreciated.

Garmin is sending you to Apple because it is Apple that would have to give you a refund as the actual point of sale.  However, Apple states all sales are final.
Apple is sending you to Garmin because it is Garmin's fault their maps are out of date and Apple doesn't write the software.  They may not even be looking that deeply and simply perceiving it as a programming "bug" it is up to Garmin to solve.
Who know whose fault it is that Garmin isn't getting up to date data to put in their maps.
Ultimately I think you stand the best chance in getting a refund from Apple though it isn't guaranteed.  Apple is the cashier.  You just have to convince them this isn't just a line of code omitted from an application and isn't something that will be soon corrected by Garmin.  Make it clear it isn't a problem with the application running on your device, it is a problem with the data it contains.  Either that or you have to hope Garmin will feel so bad about it they will delve down into their slush fund and send you a refund.

If you have iTunes 11 on your computer then you can enable the left-hand sidebar on it via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC - when connected (and if your computer's iTunes is up-to-date) your iPad should then appear on that sidebar under a 'Devices' heading :
If you select the iPad on that sidebar you can then use the Movies tab on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen to select and sync that film to your iPad's Videos app.
Has your iPad been synced to the computer before ? If not then you might find this page for syncing to a new computer useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • My Macbook Pro ran out of battery last night and wouldn't turn back on even when connected to power for a period of time. However, when I woke up, it did turn on. Is there a reason this happened and should I get it looked at?

Last night, I was watching something on my Macbook Pro and it died (out of battery). I went to plug it in and waited a couple of minutes to try and start it back up. However, when I connected the power source the light was green, which could not have been the case since I know 100% it was out of battery. I proceeded to hold the start button for a long period of time, but my computer made no noise and refused to turn on - it looked like for all intensive purposes it was dead. I left it alone overnight praying that it would be alright in the morning and luckily, when I opened the computer this morning it was restarted and fine. I'm concerned because I've had this happen to me a couple of times and while it always turns back on, I feel like there is a bigger issue that I need to get addressed. Can anyone help me with this? Any ideas? Thank you!

Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Apple recommend calibrating the battery when you buy a new Macbook and then every few months, or monthly if it used on mains all the time. This, as Apple says is to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. When the battery discharges and shuts the macbook down, it still has reserve power for a good number of hours. There is also a logic board battery to hold various settings.
I rather think I will take Apples advice on using their equipment not yours, but I would be intrigued to discover what is it you know that Apple doesnt about its batteries?

  • Which is good: ejecting or standby mode for EHD's?

After a session at the computer, I have this dilemna: how to close down the session. At this present moment of time, I have a thunderbolt, a 2TB FW LaCie, and three Seagate [2 USB] EHD's all connected to my Mac. All the three Seagate drives have been allocated backup roles via CCC and TM.
In this scenario, what should be the manner of my quitting a session at the computer? Will keeping the EHD's in a standby mode for prolonged periods damage them?
Also, I would like to know what is the difference between mounting/unmounting of a drive and ejection of drive?

No it should go into standby without disconnecting it.
That is correct, if it is disconnected then CCC will not backup. If you are using the same drive for editing and CCC, then you will need to test it to see if CCC will bring it backup from standby. If not, then maybe that is not a good combination of uses for one drive.

My LaCie has a power switch. Is it okay to directly switch it off or do I have to first click upon its desktop icon and eject it? But if I switch off its power, then will CCC automatically start up the power and at its set time backup the data on this Lacie to its concerned backup drive, a Seagate?
No you should first Eject it before Switching it off.
No CCC will not turn it back on.
    No

The 2 other Seagate drives also have got some functions to do regarding backups. These Seagate drives have no power switches. Should I just eject these drives and keep their power cables on or do I have to also have to remove their power supply cables from the drives after they are ejected.
As with any automated backup, the drive(s) must be connected and powered on in order for the automated backup to take place.

Further guidance and instructions in these matters will be highly appreciated.
While I also get a little anal about backup, I do like to save power whenever I can.
To be honest, I would probably only use the Thunderbolt drive for editing and keep one other drive online to back it up. Then rotate the other drives in and out on a daily or weekly basis keeping them off line, off site or at least in a firesafe.
Keep at least one or two aces up your sleeve! Heck' a single lighting strike, power surge or simple mistake could take out everything in the blink of an eye if it's all hooked together and running.

  • Error while creating standby database for ebs prod database

    Hi,
We are getting error while trying to create a standby database for EBS database by using RMAN DUPLICATE commands,
    Steps followed:
1.) Backup the primary database (Ebs PROD db). This was done on 12-Mar-2012
***RMAN backups are scheduled to run @10:00 pm every night. Flash Recovery Area has been configured and backup is taken at this location
    everyday.
2.) Tar the backupset, autobackup, archivelogs etc in FRA .... and copy this to the target server (STANDBY).
*** Copy(oracle rdbms binaries and FRA) completed @12:00AM on 14-Mar-2012
3.) Tried to create standby database by using RMAN duplicate on 14-Mar-2012
    RMAN> rman sys/sys@PROD auxiliary /
    RMAN> duplicate target database for standby dorecover nofilenamecheck;
After, some time the RMAN DUPLICATE process errors out with,
ORA-19563: header validation failed for file
We are not sure about the cause of this error. While searching in Metalink, we got several notes (ex, 352074.1) but all the causes stated for this error
are not applicable in our case. We double checked our instance to confirm this.
We have also found that in PROD database there are 65 datafiles and after the RMAN DUPLICATE errors out in the targer server (STANDBY) the RMAN managed to restore 51 datafiles before erroring out.
    # Please note PROD database was also backed up on 13-Mar-2012. We have a suspicion that backup on 13-Mar may be a possible cause for this error but we are
    not sure.
Need suggestions if there can be any other possible causes???
We are in a fix and it would be appreciable if we get some quick suggestions..

When opening the file to be placed in a copy or backup set, to be inspected, or used as the target for an incremental restore, its header was not recognized as a valid file header for a file of the indicated type (data file, archived log, or control file) belonging to the current database.
Kindly Ensure that the correct files are being specified for the copy or backup operation.

  • Internet Connection during Standby Power Mode

Hello.  I use a T61 with a wired Internet connection (cable modem).  Recently I've been reading that hackers can exploit a laptop that's not in use, as long as it has power.  I was wondering, does the T61's Internet connection remain active when the T61 is in Standby power mode?
    Thank you,
    Donald

    Hi Donald,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum
Probably your cable modem does something called Network Address Translation (NAT) that should make it impossible for computers on the Internet to initiate connections with your ThinkPad. It might be possible that a bug in your cable modem could allow such access, but I've not heard of such exploits.
You can add another layer of security by making sure that your ThinkPad doesn't listen to its LAN connection while in standby / hibernation. That's called "Wake on LAN" (WOL), and you want to turn it off, in two places:
BIOS. Press the F1 key at boot to get to BIOS setup. Navigate to the Config: Network menu and change the following settings to "Disabled": Wake On LAN, Flash Over LAN, Ethernet LAN Option ROM.Then save BIOS settings and exit.
Windows. This page about "Insomniac Syndrome" shows how to stop devices (including your LAN) from waking your ThinkPad.
I'm glad to see you're thinking about security. These days the web is so popular that it's probably the most likely source of security problems. Things you can do to keep safer:
Back up your important data regularly! If you do one thing, do this.
Keep your web browser updated. They're all patched regularly to remove security holes.
Keep Windows up to date. Same deal.
Don't run software from untrusted sources.
Install the "NoScript" Firefox browser extension, if you can live with it.
Install good anti-virus / intrusion detection software such as Norton Internet Security 2009. (The firewall helps, too, but is definitely not a panacea.)
Try not to get too paranoid. (I'm speaking to myself here.  )
    Happy ThinkPadding,
    Frank

  • Working out available power for phones

    Hi,
Is there some sort of rule of thumb to follow when working out how many phones you will be able to power on a switch? e.g If I have a stack of  4 x 3750X how do you work out available power for phones? Does it make a difference if the switches run dual PSU etc.. and is there a drop in the available power if a switch loses it's main power and depends on STACK power etc..
Any further info would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Brandon,
It was more of how to work out how much power I'd have available before I bought the switches, e.g If I was to buy 5 x 3750x POE, how much POE would be available.
I know how to view the available power on currently owned switches. It was really just to try and work out what I'd have "IF" I purchase this and that. This would then steer me in the direction of what I should buy if I have for example 300 7940G phones for example and 7 APs.
    Thanks

My safari menu bar is missing.  The menu bar for desktop, HD, and apps appears, but when I click on Safari, it disappears, so I can no longer see my buttons for History, etc.  I think my husband (pc user) clicked it away when borrowing my computer.  Any ideas how to retrieve it?  Thanks.

I too was having the same problem However, I could access both the menu bar and the dock by hovering my mouse over them so it wasn't a huge problem but I prefered having it there anyway. I was not in full screen mode and I could still go into full screen mode if I wanted to.  I found the easiest solution was to just quit safai and restart it, but it might not work for you considering you couldn't access you menu bar either way.
I found this article that allows you to hide/show the menu bar and the dock through TextEdit (didn't work for me) http://www.mactricksandtips.com/2009/07/hide-the-menubar-or-dock-in-specific-app s.html It is pretty old so it might not work for lion and a bit risky if you don't know what you're doing so I wouldn't really recommend doing it this way.
And KSheppard, I know it's not really any of my buisness, but the way to get answers to a question isn't by insulting others and being quick-tempered. Even if you feel like you were insulted first, don't try snapping at people who aren't obligated to help you. Honestly, it just makes everything easier if everybody is cooperative and polite.

  • HT204053 I have two iphones with different numbers that I use my apple ID for purchases, etc.  How do I get my second iphone setup on icloud?  I would like to use the features of icloud for both of my iphones.  Thank you

I have two iphones with different phone numbers that I use.  I have one of them set up on icloud now, but do not know how to set up my second device on icloud.  Both of my iphones use my same Apple ID for purchases, etc.  Is there a simple way to add a device to my icloud account?  Thank you in advance for any help someone may be able to give me.

To move one of the phones to a different iCloud account (if that's what you want to do), go to Settings>iCloud and turn all synced data to Off.  When prompted, choose to keep the data on your iPhone.  After everything is off, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  This will delete the account from the phone but not from iCloud so the other phone will not be effected.  Then set up a new iCloud account with a different Apple ID and turn iCloud syncing in Settings>iCloud back to On.  When prompted, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new iCloud account.
You will then have to go to icloud.com and sign into each iCloud account separately and delete any unwanted data that you don't want on the phone syncing with each account.

  • How do I find images in LR 2.4 (imported from CS4 Bridge) that have color labels already assigned In CS4 Bridge? I have set both Bridge and LR color labels text to match (eg Green for green, etc).

How do you find images in LR 2.4 that have been imported from CS4 Bridge and have been assigned a color label in Bridge?  I have set both LR 2.4 and my CS4 Bridge to match the text for each color to be the same (eg. Green for green, etc), and the filter search in LR 2.4 shows that a label has been assigned, but I am unable to identify and locate the specific images in LR 2.4 that have had a color label assigned from CS4 Bridge.  I have tried to search via attribute, metadata, text, etc...Is it necessary to re-assign color labels all over again, image by image, in LR 2.4, or is there a way to automatically have the color labels assigned in CS4 Bridge be assigned and searchable to the images after they have been imported into the LR 2.4 catalogue from the Bridge program?

    JohnM.
I closed both programs and re-imported photos and re-tried the action of having LR  read the XMP metadata from the CS4 files, and it seems to work now just fine...don't know why now and not before, but thanks much. Is there a way to have LR do this automatically upon import of images from CS4?  I tried to do this with an import metadata preset, but no luck.  It seems as if I can only do this once the images have already been imported into LR, and then to have to have LR read the metadata from the CS4 Bridge files.  thanks gain.
