1024x768 vs. 800x600?

Hi all,
I'm doing some research for my company about the trend in
decreasing 800x600 screen resolution users. At my last job we had
already made the decision to move to a 1024x768 layout (not
actually using the full 1024 width.. rather, 950px, for the same
reason that we never fully used an 800px layout).
At my new job I'm trying to convince them to do the same
thing. Having an extra couple of hundred horizontal pixels to play
with makes site navigation challenges easier (if you have a very
large site) and of course, it allows you to put more stuff "above
the fold." A CSS liquid layout of course can solve the "above the
fold" thing but not necessarily the navigational thing.
2 years ago, for the month of May 2005, 36% of our users had
a 800x600 layout. Over the last month, only 17% of our users had a
800x600 layout. And I've looked at the trend to make sure these
numbers weren't a fluke and the data supports the decreasing trend
in 800x600 resolution.
So I'm wondering if any of you have been faced with answering
these questions and how you solved them?
I'm an advocate for moving to more screen space but I'd like
to back that up with some solid research.
thanks!
Ron

HI Ron,
I posted something similar to this a while back and got some
defensive responses as well.
I work for an engineering firm. Last month we had 10,000
visitors. Less than 2% of these visitors were using a resolution of
800x600. Over 70% of our visitors were using 1024x768 or 1280x1024.
I know we both understand that this doesn't mean their browsers are
fully maximized when searching the Internet. Probably very, very
few of them are. I watched our engineers search the web and I found
even though they weren't maximized, they were open larger than 800
pixels. Our website, which is 950, looks absolutely ridiculous on
one of our engineers monitors that has a giant 30" apple monitor
even though it is fluid, BUT, everything essential fits on an old
crt monitor too.
I personally would not design a site 1200 pixels wide, nor
would I design one 640x480.
I think it is most relevant to be familiar with your
demographic and your products and best determine a layout based on
what a potential customer might be and what the sites purpose is.
For example, I'm an artist and I love design sites that push
the envelope. If I'm at a creative site, I enjoy "figuring" out
certain things an artist might have thrown in there. I will
increase my browser window if necessary. However, if I go looking
for a pair of shoes during my lunch break and your nav bar doesn't
work or your page is hard to read, I'm out of there.
I think hard and fast rules are not alway applicable. I think
if the navigation is readable and functions with ease at 800
pixels, the rest is up for interpretation.
That being said, I'm not a professional web developer, I went
to art school.

To the other "professionals", please don't call me names, I'm
not claiming to be an expert--just a consumer.

cannot find 1024x768 @ 60Hz rate, the lowest it has on 1024x768 or 800x600 is 85Hz, so i just see nonsense lines on my tv, but it has a 1280x768 @ 60Hz resolution, my tv doesnt support that resolution... what can i do? this started happening like a week or so, everything was allright.. and i've tried it on other tv's and same thing happens, no 60 Hz

Trashing the preferences files for displays may help. In the Finder, use the Find command and search on the term "windowserver". Find should find files like com.apple.windowserver.plist and com.apple.windowserver.xxxxxxx.plist where xxxxxxx is a string of letters and numbers. Throw all such files that are found into the trash, then restart. When OS X restarts and sees those files missing from their normal location, it will create fresh copies. So if the problem was from corruption in those .plist files, this should take care of it. Good luck.

  • Cirrus Logic won't display 1024x768

    Greetin's again.
As from my previous thread I mentioned that my GF6 6600 blew out and now it's back at the manufacturer hopefully getting replaced.  My friend loaned me a cirrus Logic card... unsure as to what kind it is but either way...
I'm trying to get it to display at 1024x768 resolution but it refuses to do so.
Trying to get it to display at 24 bit just produces 3 of the same images.  One in the top left corner, one in the bottom right and one in the middle, each hued a different color.  Blue, Green and Red (not in that order.)  16 bit on the other hand just copies the image ontop at the top of the screen and bottom.  800x600x16 reproduces the top of the screen on the bottom.  (i.e. if you bring your mouse cursor to the top of the screeen, you can see the cursor on the top of the monitor but it's also in the lower middle now.)
I tried Vert Hz ranges of 50-90 (that worked for my GF6), 50-100, 50-110 and 50-150.  This monitor is probably pretty darn old and I have no idea what brand it is... doesn't even say on the back actually just says "plug & play" on the top right.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

  • Weird nVidia problem (only at 1024x768)

    Hello there,
i have a small problem with my nVidia GFX and playing games, in every game the 1024x768 resolution in somewhat garbled... This happens only at 1024x768, when i try lower (down to 640x480) oder higher (up to 1600x1200) settings, everything is ok...
So, whats now my problem? Since i am not as good in english, its hard to describe for me. It seems that only every second line is drawed at 1024x768, and this happens to every game i try...
Well, pictures say more than words...
This is what it looks like at 1024x768:
And this is what i should get normally:
This is the first time i experience this, and i just don`t know how to handle it. And as 1024x768 ist just the perfect res for my aging machine to play games (higher = slower) i ask you here....
    Some specs of my hardware/drivers:
    AMD AthlonXP 1600+
    VIA KT133a
    nVidia GeForce FX 5200 LE
Drivers are the 1.0.8178-16's from the repos and kernel
is also from the repos, kernel26 2.6.16.9-1... Xorg is 7.0...
So, how can i deal with this, or, has anyone experienced this too?
    Greetings
    Funkyou

You need to add modelines to your xorg.conf file. An easy way to do such a thing is to backup your xorg.conf file first. Then, pacman -S hwd
    Then, type hwd -xa
It will create a xorg.conf file for you. Edit it as needed and then look for a line in the modelines section that has Interlaced in it. Comment out that line or remove it to fix your issue.

  • Serious performance issues and no sound???

I just purchased a PM8M-V VIA P4M800 + VT8237 Chipset Basedd motherboard, for the primary reason that my EVGA GeForce 6600 GT 128MB video card was having random artifacts popping up all over the screen. My problem is my performance is very laggy (2 FPS in Battlefield 2...version 1.1.2554-356.0, lowest video quality settings, tried it at both 1024x768 and 800x600 and I've messed around with the desktop resolution); I opened up the task manager during battlefield 2 and it showed 100% PC usage, which never went down during the game. I set the video card AGP apeture size to 256 MB which helped the performance a tad. Also, the video swap memory I set to the lowest possible in the BIOS. Drivers for both the new mother board and the EVGA card are installed up to date. I ran Norton and Adaware, my comp is clean, and I also ran disk defrag. I haven't done disk cleanup, ETC but I figured something that small couldn't effect performance that bad. I saw something in the BIOS about changing the AGP Voltage, not sure if I should screw with this setting
My second problem is I have no sound. My sound is a built in card and it reads, verbatum (from the Motherboard manual)
AC97 link controller integrated in VT8237R
Realtel ALC655 6-Channel Software audio codec
       - Compliant with AC97 v2.2 spec
Again, the drivers are all up-to-date on the sound, as well
Here again are my PC stats
    MSI PM8M-V motherboard
    VIA P4M800 + VT8237 Chipset Based
    Intel 2.0 GHZ Processor
    1 gig RAM
    EVGA GeForce 6600GT 128MB video
40 GB hardrive which isn't full
Upgraded power supply to handle all of the hardware
The EVGA card isn't the problem; I'm positive of that because I already returned it to newegg.com and they sent me a new one that had the same problem. Any other suggestions? Again, performance is horrible and I have no sound, even with updated drivers
please, reply to this post, or email me a solution at [email protected].  I'm desperate to use my $400 in computer stuff I bought
If you want, I can email you the dxdiag.txt file, I've heard that can help greatly to see that info...

  • (Solved) Install Issues

I have been going through the install, installed base, updated and followed wiki for rest of install . However there are 2 issues stopping the finalisation of the install.
    1. Cannot get Xserver to work
    2. Cannot get Gdm to work
I have tried many different configs for xorg.conf, I have I believe install all drivers(as per wiki) and been reading the xorg.0.log file and troubleshooting those errors but still no go. Here is my last log file which really doesn't seem to have any great error at all but still it wont work. Can I get a hand to get this thing going please.

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux on Macbook - Can't fix Screen Resolution

I just installed Arch Linux as a dual-boot on my Macbook.  I really like it so far.  However, I came across a problem that is really bothering me.  It may seem simple, but no matter what I try, I only get "1024x768" and "800x600" resolution options.  What I need is "1280x800."  Here is my xorg.conf file right now:

I just followed the instruction on the Arch Linux - Macbook Wiki page, and everything worked perfectly, except the resolution question.  The only thing I added to the file is the 'Modes    "1280x800"' lines.  This is exactly what I've always done with linux, and it has always worked.  So I'm perplexed, and I can't find any solutions that actually work by googling it.  Has anyone else come across this problem, and even more important, does anyone know what is wrong?
    Thanks.

Ok.  I figured it out.  I found this forum:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56899
I found it before, but I had done everything, or so I thought.  At the end, he mentions two things that are important to fix the resolution.  I've repeated them here, and adapted them to what I had before:
    pacman -S xf86-video-intel
edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and change video card driver from 'vesa' to 'intel'
I thought I had installed xf86-video-intel already, but apparently I hadn't.  So, I followed those two steps, and now, it looks so much better!  Thanks to anyone who tried to looked for a solution.

  • Could someone help me fix my graphics drivers in Ubuntu?

I have a Radeon 9500 Pro video card.  Normally I use the restricted drivers, but they crash my computer (hard freeze) anytime I do anything with OpenGL (including glxgears and my own compiled OGL programs).  I decided to try to update to 8.03 and pray that it would fix the problem, and the installation went smoothly, but I'm getting indirect rendering.  Here is a copy of my xorg.conf and my glxinfo output.  I'm running 7.10.

Dude I think it's a compliment to the Arch community. "we're so good, we support *your* distro" hehehe
As to the actual problem.. I use the fglrx driver as well... and the main difference is that I don't have this:
        Option         "DRI"         "true"
And that in my module section, I load
        Load    "GLcore"
... which happens to be one of the exensions that ships with fglrx.
So try loading GLcore and see what happens.

  • [Solved] mga crashes xorg

    Hi all.
I have a Matrox Millennium II and every time i use mga (xf86-video-mga) on the Screen section of xorg.conf, the Xorg crashes. I have tried to use the xorg.conf generated by Xubuntu 7.10 (which runs great on that distro) on Arch, but no success.
Here's the xorg.conf (generated by Xubuntu):
    # xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

    # package.

    @eldarion,
Have you had a look at the unofficial matrox drivers at:
    http://forum.tuxx-home.at/viewtopic.php?t=153 ?
Don't know about your card, but this is the mga driver I am using with my Millennium G400 and G450 cards.
Now, the .run installer might complain about "different X server versions ... because ABI incompatible", so add the following to the [X-:*-Core] section in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc :
    ServerArgsLocal=-ignoreABI
Also, set in the xorg.conf Device section:
    Option "HWCursor" "false"
(In fact, you can just copy the files mga_drv.so and mga_hal_drv.so to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/ if necessary.)
glxinfo and glxgears should check out okay with this mga driver.

  • 24" iMac refresh rate

I am having all those horrible problem with battlefield 2142 that everyone else is having, but i just found the file that has all the configurations for the game, such as the screen resolutions. My normal resolution is at 1920x1200, but the game resolution is stuck at 1024x800 @ 60hz. i tried to enter the larger resolutions including 1920x1200 but the game just crashes. SO thinking about it i think i have the wrong refresh rate. i went through system preferences and at the refresh rate says "n/a" as seen here....
i also checked system profiler... nothing....
that being said does anyone know the refresh rates for the reolutions of the 24" iMac?
the help would be greatly appreciated by many including myself x100....

    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
I suspect that 'refresh rate' is only applicable to CRT monitors: my flat-panel iMac has it greyed out as well.
Not sure if the lack of refresh rate selection is normal for an iMac, but I can defnitely select the refresh for my 17" LCD monitor.
It seems more likely that the game simply won't work at higher than 1024x800 - particularly as 1920x1200 is a widescreen format and the game very likely wants a 4x3 format. Try setting your monitor to 1024x768
Some games will refuse to run at resolutions lower than 1024x768 or 800x600, but I've never heard of a game that would refuse to be set at a higher resolution…

  • Samsung SyncMaster 931BW 19" has a weird resolution?

    Hello everyone!
I am using my MacBook for some years now. I never had ay problems with it, it has always worked properly. Recently, my mother gave me an old screen she did not need anymore, the Samsung SyncMaster 931BW 19''. I have some problems with it. The resolution is very very weird. When I connect the screen I get a popup that sais:
    Not Optimum Mode
    Recommended Mode :
    1440x900     60Hz
I know this is a 16:9 configuration. The only configurations I can get are 1600x1200, 1400x1050, 1344x1008, 1280x960, 1024x768 and 800x600. As far as I know this are all 4:3 configurations. That is not what I want. The screen kind of scales it to the screens resolution but it looks so weird.
When I make a screenshot of it I get, again scaled, a 4:3 ugly pixelized PNG file. I do not like this.
Besides the resolution problem I also get a weird color. I cannot set it to the right white point and also not the right GAMMA mode. Which makes it almost impossible to see anything on the screen. I tried in the screens options menu to reset the color and the image but that did not change anything. I tried to calibrate it in System Preferences but that only made it worse.
Please help me with this. It really bugs me.
    Specs:
    MacBook Pro 13'' Early 2011
    Samsung SyncMaster 931BW

Also, when I click on the Apple logo in the top-right of the screen, I go to "About this Mac", then go to the tab Displays, it shows me two displays:
    Built-in Display
    13,3-inch (1280 x 800)
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Display
    13,9-inch (800 x 600)
Inte; HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
The first is the display of the mac and the second is the Samsung monitor which actually is 19'' with a resolution of 1440x900! I think my MacBook doesn't quite understand me.

  • Troubble With Ati dri lib32

    Hi,
So i had FGLRX installt, but recently with the improvents to the ati open source driver (UVD, powerplay) i decidet to switch back to OSS.
Everything works except 32bit applications. Glxgears32 outputs:

I have nothing in /etc/profile.d/ related to FGLRX.

    That seems strange.
Make sure that there are no more remnants of the previous FGLRX setup left in places such as /etc/pacman.conf or /etc/X11/{xorg.conf,xorg.conf.d/*}, etc.
Another thing I'd try is to make sure the system is fully upgraded (and all .pacnew files merged), and then force-reinstall all related packages (heeding any warnings or post-install messages that may be printed):
    pacman -Syu
    pacman -S --asdeps xf86-video-ati ati-dri mesa lib32-ati-dri lib32-mesa lib32-mesa-libgl lib32-mesa-demos

  • Monitor Blinks

I'm running a 2 monitor setup with nvidia twinview.  At random intervals (between once a month and once every 2 seconds) one of the monitors (it happens on both, but only one at a time) will blink black and reset (like the cable has been unhooked).  This has been happening for a year (and I keep arch relatively updated, so I don't think it's a driver revision problem), but recently it has gotten much worse.  I suspected hardware failure, but I've tried everything I can think of and no change so I've finally ruled it as software.
    Any suggestions?
    I have tried:
    New CPU/motherboard
2 video cards (9600GT and my old 7600GT)
2 different mobo/cpu combinations (Phenom X4 and Core2Quad, AMD and Intel board)
    4 different monitors (2 Viewsonic, 2 Samsung -- all 1680x1050)
    DVI and power cables.
    2 different apartments.

  • System-config-display, gnome-display-properties - inconsistent R5 U5 64bit

    Hi all,
I have OEL Rel 5 U5 (64-bit) installed and running on an IBM x3200 which has Radeon integrated graphics, with a IBM ThinkVision LCD monitor (1280x1024 max)
Problem I have is eventhough system-config-display lets me select 1280x1024 I can't actually get it to switch. Upon log-off/log-in, reboot, restart, etc... it still returns to 1024x768 mode.
    Running gnome-display-properties only gives me a choice of 1024x768, 800x600, or 640x480.
I've also tried xrandr and trying to force it to 1280x1024 but it tells me I only have the 3 choices given by gnome-display-properties.
My xorg.conf file is configured with 1280x1024, 1024x768, and 800x600 modes, so I'm baffled at where gnome-display-properties and xrandr are getting their mode choices...
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Based on Xorg log I'm guessing the monitor driver just will not support the higher res and apparently that's where 'gnome-display-properties' gets its info regardless of what I try in Xorg.conf.
I'll see if I can manipulate the monitor settings and see where that gets me...
I see the following in the log:

  • Resizing ALV Grid When Changing Screen Resolution

I have an ALV Grid imbedded in a custom container.  I would like for the Grid to resize if the user switches from 1024x768 to 800x600 resolution.  I obviously could size it for the lower res screen (and it would be ok on the higher res screen), but I ultimately would like it to resize.  Does anyone know how to make this happen?

Is your Grid running within a custom container that was placed in the screen painter?  If so this is very easy.  Just make you screen very large (much larger then even 1024x768).  When you lay down the custom container, make it large enough to fill the entire empty area.  Your custom container should have a Resizing section in the attributes window.  Just check on Vertical and Horizontal resizing and choose you minimum size.
