1080 resolution on Mac Pro

Hey,
This is a carry on from the other topic I posted up:
I'm trying to attach my HD TV to my Mac Pro but it doesnt seem to work.
What I would like to do is to set the resolution of my displays to the native resolution of the TV which is 1920 x 1080 but I cannot find this option in the display preferences.

I've seen screen shots online where users have the option to choose 1080i or 1080p. This would be ideal!
My hardware:
Mac Pro 8 Core
GFX: Nvidia 8800GT (with dual DVI output)
OSX : 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard)
Cheers,

Hi-
If the graphics card firmware does not have resolution support needed for a particular monitor, it won't show as an option.
You can create new, custom resolutions using SwitchResX;

The difference between 1080p vs 1080i is not something to worry about.

  • Mac Pro Max resolution

Hi - I bought last week a brand new Mac Pro 2010 with 12 core processor and the ATI Radeon HD 5770 card, I have two 27 inch displays both capable of resolutions of 2,560 x 1,440. I am using a DVI to mini-port adapter for the second monitor and the DVI port for the primary monitor. The max resolution I am given on the secondary monitor is 1920 x 1080. However the primary monitor using the DVI port comes in at a much lower resolution. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong. I thought I would be able to run both monitors at 2560 x 1440 resolution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

DVI to mini-port adapter for the second monitor
The 5770 card is perfectly capable of running 3 30" displays.
To run a display wider than 1920 wide, you will need a Dual-Link DVI converter from Mini DisplayPort. Dual-Link means the three main data lines are doubled in the adapters, connectors, and cables to support the higer data rates required. Dual-Link DVI connectors must always have the entire central grid of pins present.
Apple sells a very nice one for US$100. It uses an additional USB pigtail to pick up extra power to run the signal re-drivers. Accell makes a similar one for a few dollars less.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac pro resolution problem

I have created a partition for windows 8.1 pro on my 13' retina display mac pro via boot camp, everything is fine except the resolution, when i open the browser, i could see pixels, the words aren't very sharp, but this isn't my biggest problem, when i open the Solidworks software i'm working on, the icons are too small, or the texts are too big for their boxes. what is happening here? anyone knows what is all about, or how to fix this? changing the resolution of the display didn't solve the problem.

This is how the words look like in the browser page, you could see pixels. The maximum resolution for this machine is 2560*1600

  • I cannot get full 4k2k resolution while bootcamp windows 8.1 on new mac pro

When using OS X Yosemite, I get full 4k resolution on my mac pro 2013 using a seiki 39" TV/monitor. However, when I'm using widows 8.1 on the bootcamp partition I can only get 1080P. Has anyone seen this problem? Is it the mini display to HDMI cord that I'm using? Would this still be the case if I went straight HDMI to HDMI? On OS X side its full 4k at 30Hz default, but in bootcamp its 1080P at 60Hz default. Thanks, footdocy.

Did you upgrade from Win 8 to 8.1? If so then:
    Additional Information
4K displays and Ultra HD TVs using Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 with Boot Camp use the same rules as OS X. If you upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1, you should repair Boot Camp drivers.

  • Mac Pro 2008 with Radeon 4870 video useable resolution on DVI limited to size of minidisplay port VGA when displays are mirrored. Did not have this problem until I plugged in new monitor (miniDisplayport), but now it affects even going back original mon

Have been using the Mac Pro since 2008.  Changed to a Radeon 4870 card early this year.   Everything was fine.
Running an old KDS monitor from minidisplay port to VGA and a 1400x1050 projector from DVI out.  Have used the
two mirrored the entire time with no trouble.
The old kDS monitor looked like it was starting to go bad so I got another monitor.  Don't have much room
so it's a 14inchwith widescreen 1328x768 display.  Hooked that to minidisplay port as it only has a VGA input.
Immediately the LCD display took over and restricted the output to the projector.
If I turn off mirroring, I can get projector back to normal.  But this makes running programs a lot more difficult.
It worked fine with mirroring on before the monitor change.  Except going back to old monitor,
now it is affecting things. I pull up display preferences.  If the displays are mirrored, even setting the projector
to 1400x1050, it says "usuable resolution 1280x1024."  It didn't use to do this at all.
Tried reseting NVRAM - no result.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Just looking at the image on the projector, I don't see any difference from
    before.

    UPDATE:
As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

  • 10.5.2 and Mac Pro monitor resolution issue

I installed 10.5.2 this morning from Software Update and it has now defaulted to a resolution that my LCD monitor cannot display. I can't even boot into Open Firmware, to the Mac Pro DVD, or bring up the drive selection screen (holding down Option when booting) as my LCD continues to say that it cannot support the resolution of the Mac Pro.
I had the settings set to the native resolution (1280x1024) before installing the 10.5.2 update and had all updates before the 10.5.2 update installed prior to installing it. I have reset the PRAM many times, reset the SMU, and tried connecting the LCD via both VGA (with the converter) and DVI. I plugged in an old CRT monitor and was then able to get into System Preferences but even after setting the LCD to the correct resolution and refresh rate it continues to say it is being sent an unsupported resolution. My LCD is a Samsung monitor but I don't recall the exact model number right now.
With the CRT monitor I was able to start downloaded the latest graphics update via Software Update but had to leave for work before I could install it and see if that fixed the problem.
I have seen a number of Mac Book Pro users with an external display problem after updating but was wondering if any Mac Pro users were having this problem or if anyone knows how to fix it. Thank you for your assistance.

Update: My monitor is a Samsung 913T and is less than 2 years old. I installed the driver update via Software Update but there was no change in behavior. Any CRT monitor I hook up works fine but I don't have another LCD to test. I tried reinstalling the 10.5.2 update but there was no change with that either.
I am now using Time Machine to roll back my Mac from right before I applied the 10.5.2 update. I doubt this will fix the problem as it seems to be deeper than that but I figured it was worth a try. I'll also be calling AppleCare support on Monday (hopefully they aren't closed for the federal holiday). I am still seeking any help or suggestions on this front. I don't have the money for a new monitor at this time and would really like to get my current LCD working as it was before with 10.5.1.

  • I have a new macbook pro and an LG w2361v monitor.  The max resolution the mac is allowing me to set is 1400x1050, why can't I get to the max resolution the monitor can accept (1900x1080)

I have a new macbook pro and an LG w2361v monitor.  The max resolution the mac is allowing me to set is 1400x1050, why can't I get to the max resolution the monitor can accept (1900x1080)?  I know that the monitor is able to accept this resolution but It can't seem to find it.  Is it something to do with the new thunderbolt port? or the fact that I'm utilizing the VGA adaptor?  I could go HDMI if that works better.

    Use DVI or HDMI.
VGA runs out of steam after a while.

  • Mac Pro GeForce GT120 Unable to select 1680 x 1050 resolution

Hi all - I've got a brand new Mac Pro with current OS on it. It has a Geforce GT120 video card, and I've hooked up an NEC 203wxm monitor using a Mini Display Port to VGA adaptor. Now, I can't select the native resolution of the display (1680 x 1050) in display preferences. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Rich

3rd party monitors (Dell incl) have been a bear to get working with MDP, and the $29 (did it drop now to $19?) has been less than satisfactory while the $99 (supports dual link) has been better it is almost as much as a 2nd GT120. And that resolution is well within what 20-23" would use, nothing like 30" dual display link support.
Same for ATI 4870. MDP is being added and adopted on ATI's 5000 cards so have to see. The GTX 285 w/ 2 x DVI ports looked better when you get into DVI and 3rd party displays.
Firmware update huh? hope that works, though I'd think a new model of the MDP adapter would be in order (free exchange type).

  • How can to connect 3 displays with resolution 2560x1600 to MAC Pro?

How can I connect 3 Dell U3014 displays (resolution 2560x1600) to MAC Pro?

  • New Mac Pro/Yosemite lost display resolutions that were in Mavericks

After a 9 hour migration process from my old Mac Pro, late 2007 2.8Ghz Dual Quad core, to a new Mac Pro 3.5Ghz 6-Core, I have had issues with the display resolution I used on my old Mac Pro. They don't show up in the list of available resolutions, and now everything on my Dell 30" display is HUGE! How can I get the resolution settings back to where the old Mac Pro was?

In the System Preferences "Display" pane - do you have "Best for display" or "Scaled" selected for the problematic 30" Dell display. Based on your comments I'm guessing it's the "Scaled" option which should show you the list of all resolutions that it knows your graphics board can do. So what graphics board do you have in the new and old Mac Pro? It's listed in the "System Information" app (click on the Apple in the menu bar at the top of the screen, then hold down the Option key and then click on "System Information". The graphics board is listed in the "Graphics/Displays" option about half way down the list of Hardware items on the left of the page. Did you migrate the old graphics board in the older Mac Pro over to the new one or does the new Mac Pro have it's own? What exactly is the list of resolutions that are shown for your new Mac Pro with the Dell 30"?
Also I'm a little confused - on which system is the Dell 30" on now - the old Mac Pro or the new one? Which resolution setting did the Dell on the old Mac Pro used to be set at and what is it now on the new Mac Pro?

  • Mac Pro Resolution Problems

I have a six core mac pro using a samsung 24" monitor.
When i go from mini display to HDMI it looks awful, colours are wrong after many calibrations and photos and video looks really bad quality even though its not but the resolution is correct. I tried DVI to VGA just to see what it was like and the quality is so much better but the resolution of 1920x1080 that is the highest it will allow me leaves a massive black band of about 2 inches on the left hand side of the screen, tried to move the screen but it would only let me move about half an inch before it was as re positioned as possible,
As a fix right now i have it plugged in both VGA and HDMI mirroring the monitors (even though it is the same monitor the mac thinks there are two) so now the desktop is working fine for VGA but the second i open up a program that is full screen (shamefully World Of Warcraft) the screen resizes (even though its the same resolution as the desktop) and adds the black bar in again. Its driving me insane!
am i doing something really stupid and is there a quick fix? or is this something i cant fix
Thanks in advance for any help
    Richard

The 5770 and 5870 each features one Dual Link DVI-I port and two Mini DisplayPort.
The DVI-I is Dual Link capable. DVI can be directly adapted to HDMI, and also can be directly adapted to VGA.
Single-Link DVI/HDMI is a serial interface that carries three data bits in each signaling interval, as well as control signals. In general, Single-Link supports displays up to 1920 wide. Dual Link DVI is the same except that it carries six data bits in each signaling interval, supporting displays over 1920 wide.
DVI/HDMI screen drawing is very similar to VGA screen drawing, and the data sent are digital "scan lines" left-to-right row data, top-to-bottom with entire screen data sent about every 60 Hertz. Analog VGA signals are sent at the same time on a separate set of pins.
DisplayPort and its Mini variant are inherently a packet interface, but can be coerced to produce a "Dual Mode" signal that approximates Single-Link DVI/HDMI. Getting Dual-Link DVI or VGA from DisplayPort interface requires a non-trivial converter than contains chips and requires power.
    Executive Summary:
If you have one display that is wider than 1920 or VGA, attach to the DVI-I connector with an appropriate cable.
Running a Mini DisplayPort display from the Mini DisplayPort requires only a cable.
Single-Link DVI/HDMI can be had from the Mini DisplayPort with a cheap adapter.
Dual-Link DVI or VGA requires an expensive Active Powered converter which can cost US$100.

  • Mac Pro and Lion screen resolution

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Mac Pro after installing OSX Lion this morning. I was hoping someone would be able to help. After installing Lion, my Philips monitor won't work. My monitor says I need to change the resolution to 1280x768 but when I connect my Mac Pro to my second monitor and try and change the settings for the Philips monitor, there is no option for that resolution.
I'm using an early 2009 Mac Pro. The Philips monitor is connected through VGA and a VGA to DVI adapter.
I had no problems with SL; and I have no idea why it is not working with Lion.
If you could help me fix it, I would be so happy.

You do need to uae the System Preferences > Displays , not just the MenuBar item to set higher resolutions. The menuBar item only lists the last three resolutions you have successfully used, not all available.
The window that opens should have a Title that indicates the correct name of your display, not a generic name like "VGA Display". This indicates that your Mac has successfully discussed the display name and capabilities over the Digital Data Channel in the cable. Use of inadequate cheater adapters, or multiple stacked adapters can mean these signals are not passed through.

  • The resolution on my Mac Pro is suddenly wrong.  I can not find a size that works. Help?

Mac Pro: the resolution has changed to be slightly larger than my screen.  I can not find a setting to correct this.  Any suggestions? Thanks.

Have you checked that zoom is turned off? Open System Preferences > Universal Access, and turn off Zoom. You can also try to hold the Control key and scroll down, so zoom will be turned off.
If it doesn't work, open System Preferences > Displays, and choose the biggest resolution
