1080i-24p Sony V1U

I've been having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to get my 24p into a final cut timeline. I've done the hoo-hah of using cinema tools and even it didn't really work, I only successfully reverse telecined about half of my 135 clips for a short film I'm working on. In desperation I attempted to drop in 29.97 footage into a 24fps timeline and when I rendered the clip I had constant motion in all 24 frames of each second... for that clip.
Now 6 hours into editing I've tried rendering a clip and have found that I have frame doubling.. which makes it look like a bad claymation film!
Is there ANYTHING I can do? Or can someone at least explain to me how cinema tools works? On some clips I've tried every single possibility and I have still had PPIP, or some combination of progressive and interlaced frames in a reversed 4 frame sequence.
Any help? I've been searching the web for 2 weeks to find a solution to my 24p nightmare.
I captured at 1080i and 24 progressive in a Sony V1U.

The update 6.02 can allow pulldown removal from 60i HDV tape and here is what you will need to be successful.
1. An Apple Intel computer or PPC Quad.
2. HDV that was recorded as 24pA from the Sony V1U.
3. Final Cut Pro 6.02
If you have all of these ingredients you can remove the pulldown as you capture to Pro Rez and end up with the same size file 1440x1080, 23:98 timebase
If your shooter didn't record as 24pA but still recorded 24p you have two options. Leave the footage as is because the look of 24p is in the 29:97 (1080i) tape, or use Cinema Tools and try to remove the added frames. IMO you would be wasting your time to remove the pulldown. If someone really needed a 24p project they should have invested more time to insure the work flow before shooting, however anyone using this camera would never know the difference from any other 24p recording the way the Sony V1U records 24p to tape.
Good Luck

  • Unable to print to video, out to Sony V1U

Wedding video shot with Sony V1U, HDV 1080i 16x9. Imported into FCEHD3.5, using easy set up hdv 1080 AIC. total movie length 100minutes. Edited fine. Exported as a QT movie self contained to desk top, no problem. Then attempted to export from the time line the entire sequence. The FCE is pretty easy to export from and set the sony v1u to HDV import with both auto and HDV settings. It is in VTR mode. I checked the render again and it was complete. saved the project. Closed FCEHD. connected fire wire from cam to computer and powered up cam with what appear to be the correct setting according to the manual. Opened FCEHD and project. Rechecked render, resaved project and chose print to video. Went through the next screen as I normally do and have tried with both automatic record start and manual record start. Clicked start and the computer does its job and the video starts but the camera does not appear to ever be controlled by the computer. I let it run for about 30 minutes to see if it needed time to change from Mpeg2 back to HDV. Maybe I did not wait long enough for the number crunching before I gave up.
Question 1: What am I doing wrong.
I tried to export a SD movie and it worked fine.
I tried to send it to IDVD from the QTmovie.fcp file on the desk top but it immediately shuts down IDVD. I tried to import into ImovieHD and it gave me a QT error. I thought maybe imovie had a time limit so I re-exported the movie in to sections as FCP and then dragged and dropped into imovie and it worked. The resolution is much worse in imovie as compared to the great video in FCEHD.
Question 2: Am I losing quality as I move from HDV to FCEHD ( I would assume so as it is going to Mpeg2), and even more when I go then from FCEHD to imovie.
Question 3: When I print to tape from fce back to my original hdv setting it should convert back to hdv correct?
    Any advide would be appreciated.
    Thanks, Steve

  • MAC and FINAL CUT NOT RECOGNIZING SONY V1U Camera

The new Sony V1U camera (out this year) is not being recognized by my iMAC computer (this years latest model) and nor by the FINAL CUT PRO HD 5.1 ...Any suggestions?
I already called Mac/ Final Cut - they had the other models (Sony A1U and Z1U)listed as compatible with FC, but the V1U wasn't listed - I'm thinking since it's brand new, it's just not listed yet. We tried at Samy's camera to get it to work with their MAC/ FC but no go, and I tried different fire wire cable- wasn't the problem either. ANy help is appreciated - Do I need a Sony Driver or will I just have no luck hooking up the camera?

Just got the new HVR-V1U and it worked correctly out of the box with FCP 5.1.2 and iMovie HD on a Mac G5 Quad. IMovie saw the camera correctly right away as HD and captured that way; I set FCP to HDV 1080i60 and it captured correctly.
The camera setting for IN/OUT REC are:
    REC FORMAT: HDV 1080i
COMPONENT: 1080i/480i (it auto switches depending on what's on tape)
    i.LINK CONV: OFF
DOWN CONVERT: SQUEEZE (nothing happens since iLink convert is off anyway).
Note that the camera does NOT capture in Quicktime "New Movie Recording" unless I put it into DV mode or downconvert mode, but in any of those DV modes, the picture is squeezed regardless of my "squeeze, letterbox, or crop" selections.
The V1U will also capture to FCP and iMovie while just in camera mode: no tape recording, but just whatever the camera is looking at. Sounds like tapeless recording is possible, though there must be a tape in the machine. I haven't tried the HDMI through a BlackMagic Intensity (because I don't have one, and it doesn't work yet with G5's in any case), so I can't comment on the cameras raw performance. Camcorderinfo.com has a detailed review of the FX7 which has similar, if not identical video properties in the default modes.
I did some quicky video recording tests in HDV and captured them on FCP as HDV, then as camera downconverted DV (anamorphic). I then used compressor to convert each of those streams to mpeg2 (4.5 avg, 7.5 max) and the HDV to mpeg2 direct is slightly better, especially in vertical red bleed.
My only grip so far is that Sony did not include a regular mini-stereo microphone plug in, but only the XLR pair. For serious video work, you probably do want to use XLR mics; but it sure would be nice to be able to just plug in my cheapy Sony ECM-MSD1 to do casual recording in stereo instead of recording only mono with the included mic. Oh, well, we can't have everything, can we.

  • HD 24p from V1U has interlacing artifacts

I am just starting to play with my new Sony V1U. I shot a few clips at 24p and brought them into FCP. When I look at them on a 24fps, I still see interlacing on every 2 of 4 frames??
The clips themselves are still listed with a 29.97 timebase, but I can't figure out how or if I should change this. The Capture Preset is set for HDV. (There is no option for 1080p24)
Shouldn't I be able to see all 24 frames progressive in the timeline? Any ideas?

I just purchased a V1U myself. Just getting FCP 5.1.2 is NOT going to fix your problem. FCP doesn't support the V1U's true 1080 24p yet. The only HDV that FCP is referencing when you see 1080 24p is the Canon 24f thing (shutter of cam isn't true 24p, it is a software-in-the-cam solution, albeit a very convincing one...)
Anyhoo, I had success pulling the 29.97 footage down and removing the 3:2 cadence from my V1U footage. The result was squeaky clean 24p. Looks great. You'll need to use cinema tools and AIC instead of HDV (cinema tools won't let you apply pull down to frames that don't exist, so native HDV is no good; you'll need to make all your frames I frames...) I've already started using the cam's 24p scan A mode to make this easier (it resets the cadence every time you pause the camera...)
If all this sounds completely foreign to you, I advise just waiting a few months for Apple to officially support it in a future FCP release, so that FCP will remove the frames on capture.

  • Will FCP support the new Sony V1U

I'm considering buying the soon to be released Sony V1U. Does anyone know if this camera will be supported by Final Cut right away or will we have to wait for NAB for an update?
    Thanks,
    Anne

Might need an update to work directly with captured files and all formats it shoots (unless it uses the same protocols that the XDCAM stuff does). Sony says that if you have their HDV devices (deck) you can play thru to it apparently in it's literature. Meaning you can capture it during a playback from the camera I guess. It does record to tape too, right? Sony:
In addition to typical 60i, the HVR-V1U offers 24p/30p progressive scan capture, enabling cinema and drama productions in its compact yet high performance unit. The camcorder also adopts the world's first 2-3 pull-down HDV recording system for storage of the 24p scanned images, keeping your existing HDV1080/60i HDV gear in action. Playback your 24p/30p scan footage using Sony HDV equipment you already have at hand, or feed it to a compatible Non-Linear Editing (NLE) system without changing your HDV deck or monitors - it’s as simple as that."
I'd not be the first on my block to buy one before they are in circulation and someone with first hand experience has reported that there's no hitches...

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match

  • 1080i/24p to Film Out in Final Cut Pro

A client of ours shot a project with the *Panasonic HVX-200* in 1080i/24p (not 1080i/24pa) and they are asking if they will have a problem with the footage when they output to film. They are using *Final Cut Studio 2* on an *8-core Mac Pro*.
I told them to use *Cinema Tools* to reverse telecine the 29.97 footage back to the native 24p and they shouldn't have problems. They said I was wrong and that frames would be lost in the process. (Which I know isn't how 3:2 pull-downs work) They also said that they did this before and the 1080i footage they got from the HVS-200 P2 cards and FS-100's were already in 24p format when transfered. Is there a way that this was possible or am I missing something here?
    Thanks!

You are right, they are wrong, very, very, very wrong. I'm going to copy and paste from another thread I just answered about this same issue:
I am the author of the FS-100 DVD guide, work with Focus Enhancements closely, have many consulting clients using this system, and have been using the HVX200/FS-100/FCP system since the HVX200 shipped, and a cert'd trainer.
As for FCP, here's the workflow. To start, make sure your HVX is set to 1080i/24PA. If it is set to 1080i/24P, you won't get 24p, you'll get 60i with the 24P effect. Just like on the DVX100. 24P results in a native 60i with the 24P effect, as 24PA has metadata that allows it to become progressive and 24P native.
In FCP, bring in your footage with the Log & Transfer window, assuming you're on FCP 6. Any pre-6 version was super buggy with P2 data. Make sure the "remove advanced pulldown" is selected and import your footage. Ignore the "Compressor" that is referred to in the clips info (which is all the metadata), it will not say 1080p24, it only refers to the compression engine handling the footage, not the actual compression of the clip.
In your project, delete any Sequences you have, in the FCP menu go to Easy Setup, and choose "DVCPRO HD - 1080pA24". Create a new Sequence and you're good to go. Simple as that.
If you go to look at "Item Properties" for these clips, look at the "Vid Rate" field, it will be 24p. The "Compressor" field refers to an engine and has nothing to do with the actual format of the clip, ignore it. The 1080p30 you see as the "Compressor" simply means that the QuickTime 1080p30 engine is being used, and is perfectly capable of driving native 1080p24 footage.
The lines you're seeing on 1080p24 are interlace lines, and are normal, as 1080p24 is, again, 60i with the 24p "effect". You have to record in, and edit in 1080pA24. There's a big difference.

  • P2 1080i/24p and CS3

Started a DVCPRO HD 1080i/24p project. Imported P2 mxf files shot in 1080i/24p. Timeline needs rendering when mxf is placed on timeline.
Why does this happen? Every other native P2 project for DVCPRO HD does not require rendering. ex, 720/60 etc.
CS4 does not behave this way in the trial I downloaded.

    I noticed the same issue while running some tests today. I shot 6 x 30 second clips to p2. 1080i 24p, 1080i 24pa, 720p 24p, 702p 24pn, DVCPro 50 480i 24pa, DVCPro 50 480i 24p. I created 3 sequences, one for each of the resolutions.
On the 1080i sequence the 24p requires rendering while the 24pa does not. Same thing for the DVCPro 50, the 24p requires rendering while the 24pa does not. None of the 720 clips required rendering and neither of those were shot in 24p advance.
I am very interested to find out why this is happening.

  • Premiere CS4 and HV30 (HDV 1080i 24p with 2-3 pulldown scheme)

    Hi,
I am currently capturing video shot with an HV30. The footage was shot in HDV PF24 mode along with the CINE MODE selected. The results look great but I am wondering about the frame rate being reported per clip in CS4.
The project was setup using the HDV 1080p24 preset but I am guessing that could be wrong. I didn't see an HDV 1080i 24p preset but probably should have created one. The clips are showing in the bin as 29.97 and not showing 23.97 like the Sequence. I know the camera recorded the 24p in a 60i wrapper but I thought the preset would have covered that. When I select interpret footage the remove pulldown isn't available.
Is there anything I should have done differently? or is there anything I need to do at all?
I have shot with the HV20 and CS3 in the past without this being a problem.
ideas? or kind pushes in the right direction :)
    Thanks
    -Ken

I am not sure about PAL. I can tell you I am not having sync issues with my setup.
I will try the HDV 60i preset. Does anyone else have input about the HV30? I would be interested in hearing what others have experienced with the camera and CS4 or CS3 for that matter.
    Thanks
    -Ken

  • Can I shoot slow motion on HVX-200 keeping 1080i/24P without FCP Conversion

I've been reading many threads, but haven't figured if you can actually shoot true 1080i/24P on my HVX-200 with menu frame rate set to 60fps/shutter 60fps. The times I've tried it shows 24P in the menu frame rate and will not playback on the P2 in true slow motion so I can import into FCP slow motion at 1080i/24P without conversion.
From everything I've seen it shows it has to be in 720/24P with menu frame rate at 60fps/shutter 60fps which will let it playback on the P2 in slow motion.
Any suggestions? We want to shoot everything in 1080i/24P but see instant playback in slow motion without conversion mostly for music videos.
    Thanks, Paul

haven't figured if you can actually shoot true 1080i/24P on my HVX-200 with menu frame rate set to 60fps/shutter 60fps
You can't. 720p is the only format that is 60fps. 1080i is 30fps.
From everything I've seen it shows it has to be in 720/24P with menu frame rate at 60fps/shutter 60fps which will let it playback on the P2 in slow motion.
Correct. You can only shoot in-camera slow motion at 720p60, using the 24p setting. And this is also the way to shoot so you can slow it down later with Cinema Tools or in FCP. It must be 720p60. Again, 1080i is 30fps only. Even 1080p...30fps with DVCPRO HD.
Any suggestions? We want to shoot everything in 1080i/24P but see instant playback in slow motion without conversion mostly for music videos.
Sorry, if you want to shoot smooth slow motion, you need to shoot 720p. If you must shoot 1080p, then you need to invest in good post slow-motion options, like Twixtor.

  • Hvx200 1080i 24p Footage not Properly Reverse Telecining

So I've got a bunch of footage that we shot using the 1080i 24p setting on the hvx200 which yielded 24-in-60 footage, which normally isn't a problem and the other 2 cameras we were shooting (an hv20 and hg10, both in 24p mode) produce the same kind of files. after batching everything out to compressor to remove the telecine, and convert to 1920x1080 prores, i just discovered that all the HVX footage is true 24p, but didn't remove the pulldown correctly, and most every frame is now interlaced.
I'm trying to figure out if it's a compressor issue, a dvchdpro issue, or a computer/install issue. I've had some QT plug-ins that break the reverse telecine function, but considering the hv20 and hg10 footage converted just fine i don't think it's that.
also, after trying to convert to directly to prores and run through cinema tools to do a manual RT, i don't get the option to RT. and lastly using JES Deinterlacer when i set it up and submit i get a "cadence not found" error. it's also is reading the file as progressive when i first put it in JES.
I've also tried running the RT through final cut directly as some of those old pany cams have RT flags and FCP can handle the RT process internally.
Any thoughts anyone? has anyone ever run 1080i 24p footage through compressor and achieved a true 24p framerate, or do i have an isolated instance here?

so after sleeping on the problem, i took the footage and ran compressed it out to prores422, this time making sure to select a frame rate of 29.97 AND checking the "interlaced" button on the codec page. after batching the footage to make it true 60i, i then ran it through compressor again to remove the pulldown, and everything worked as it should. I think the problem arose from the footage reporting itself as DVCHD PRO 30P instead of 60i, and compressor wasn't seeing any fields and therefor not seeing any cadence

  • Sony V1U Not Capturing HDV in FCP 6

    Hi all
    I am running FCP 6.0.2 on a Dual 2GHz PPC G5 running OSX v 10.4.11
I shot some footage on a friend's Sony HVR-V1U in 1080i. I used the 1080i 60 easy set up to create a project in FC and the log and capture window never sees the camera. I checked all the settings on the camera -- the in out menu is set to HDV, etc... all the things everyone online says to do... but still nothing.
So I tried capturing in iMovie and voila -- it sees the camera and controls it and captures with no problem...all those movies import into FC just fine, but I know that iMovie is converting the footage to a different codec...and I want FC to do what it should be able to do...so I still want to fix the problem...
The only other thing I'm wondering is do I have to be using the weird Sony proprietary "iLink" cable? (The one that plugs into the side of the camera under the LCD?) I'm just using a the usual firewire cable that I always use for cameras -- and in this case that cable plugs into the V1U at the spot that says "HDv/DV out" on the back of the camera, so I THINK I'm ok, there, but I dunno.
Has anyone had this problem? Has anyone solved it?
    Thanks
    Rob

I followed your list -- one menu setting I didn't see on the camera was AV/V-DV...I looked at the menus when the camera is set to VCR and also when set to Camera and I didn't find it...can you please clarify?
In any case, I followed your kind instructions to the letter (with the obvious exception as I've stated above) and still no go. One new wrinkle, though: When I start FCP now, it asks me where the external HDV device is -- it's looking for the camera even though it never saw it before...(unless it's remembering it from when I tried successfully to capture the HDV as plain old DV footage)
    This is really frustrating.

  • Combining 24p from V1U with 24p from VX100

As I understand it, 24p is not 24p is not 24p, and there are some issues that might arise from mixing 24p from two different brands. Is this the case? If so, what is needed to be able to capture and use the footage from a Sony 24p and a Panasonic 24P. A plug in? A setting? Hardware?

It there/was there a problem in the past with Final Cut Pro capturing 24 P from the V1U? We had heard there was. but we are not clear what that problem may have been or how it manifested itself?

  • Sony v1u camera's hard drive recorder and fcp 6

I bought the hard drive recorder with the V1U HDV Sony camera. The files called M2T's i think are not supported by FCP. Do you know if they are in the FCP 6? Or if the 24pA setting still has to go through a CinemaTools reverse telecine to be seen.

I will let wiser minds than I comment. However, do you have a choice? Either FC can read the format or not. With me, I go from MPEG 2 to PAL DV, it seems to be OK. But I am not doing professional stuff.
