1080i to 480p ?

In an earlier post I had asked a question about taking 1080i source material and generating a letterboxed. progressive SD DVD. Straight forward enough, but the fellow that answered also warned that, by going to 480p as opposed to 480i, the resolution would be cut in half. I really don't understand this, and, after a few tests, am not sure this really is what is happening. I guess the first question is how FCP converts 1080i to 480i. Does it average scan lines together? More confusing, if I start with 1080i (HDV) and take only odd or even fields, isn't that 540p? So where is the resolution loss when outputting to 480p SD? Lastly, what tools do we have that tell up if the resulting DVD is actually 480p?

Just so we're on the same page 480p usually means progressive-scan at a 854x480 frame size. It's also known as EDTV (aka Enhanced Definition Television).
Not too many options for recording to/or viewing that anymore. FOX network, before they went 720p, used to broadcast their digital signal in EDTV. And the earliest plasmas - including the entry-level models today - boast a 854x480 resolution (and are progressive-scan).
The "p" involved in DVD authoring is 24p, where your video content is encoded at 23.98 frames per second.
But, I take it, you are talking about giving a progressive-scan look to your downcoverted 480i footage? (what some folks like to call 30p)
If that is the case, what I believe you've been warned about is using the Deinterlace filter in Final Cut - that simply throws out every other scanline (and doubles the existing ones) to give footage a progressive-scan look.
Within the confines of Final Cut Studio, you can create 30p-look material by using Frame Controls in Compressor 2 or later (set the Deinterlace option to Better, and Output Fields to Progressive) but this takes a lot of time. You might be old and gray by the time if finishes.
But I get the sense that I've raised more questions for you than I've answered...

  • Performance 1080i, 720p, 480p

Just purchased Apple TV and downloaded a movie. Playback was "jumpy". Posted a question hear and learned that I missed choice to pick the AppleTV from the source to play direct from the box vice streaming. I did this and performacne was still poor (jumpy, picture freezes then runs fast to catch up, audio not in sync). I switched resolution to 720p and noticed some improvement. At 480p performance seems fine. Picture quality isn't that much different given downloaded movie isn't HD. Just doesn't seem that this should matter for direct playback. Why am I getting poor performance at 1080i?
Have played some other short videos and tehy seem fine.

I also experienced this when I first got apple tv.
When I unplugged and replugged to reboot, I could
play video at 1080i, 720p, and 480p without any
    problems.
You are dead correct about this. I was having the same issue with a video I put though VisualHub once I rebooted I never droopeed a frame.
    Thanks!

  • Mac Mini With Philips CRT - 1080i issues

I have a Philips 34PW9818 High Definition CRT TV connected to my new 1.83 Mac Mini. My TV has a DVI input and supports 1080i or 480p. The only one of these options coming up under System Preferences/Display was for 1920 x 1080 (interlaced). When I choose that option the top and left portions of the screen are cut-off and the screen flickers. If I chose 848 x 480, which is the closest I have to 480p, the screen is much clearer, doesn't flicker but portions of all sides are cut-off. I had planned to use this for web browsing, Front Row and to watch DVDs. I assumed that this would work considering my TV has a DVI input and it could handle up to 1080i.
    Can this be fixed?
Is it possible for this TV to work well for web browsing, Front Row and watching DVDs?
Will DisplayConfigX or SwitchResX fix my problems?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
mac mini intel duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I have the same issue with my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. 480p just isn't enough, but 1080p should be enough. What you need is a scan converter.
    Edit: http://www.provantage.com/startech-vid2dvidtv~7STRV012.htm
seems like an inexpensive solution compared to what I had quoted earlier. Though it requires DVI on your computer end, and Composite on the TV end. Let us know how it works?

  • Macbook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009) external monitor static

I've had this problem ever since I bought my macbook pro a year and a half ago. I like to connect my macbook pro to a Sony Bravia TV (model: KDL-26P3000) via an HDMI cable and mini displayport to hdmi adapter. Every few minutes or so the image turns to static on my Sony TV for anything between a few seconds and 2 minutes (there is no change to the macbook pro display). The TV screen also flickers and shows red vertical lines from time to time.
It seems to be completely random (has nothing to do with Sleep function) and it happens whether I am playing movies, viewing photos or not doing anything at all. I've tried using several cables (I think about 6) and 2 adapters (one apple and one griffin) and the problem persisted. It happened on Snow Leopard and it still happens on Lion. Everything is updated. I am certain this is a software issue, because using the exact same hardware and cables with my secondary OS (Windows 7 installed via Bootcamp) the issue simply never occurs.
There seems to be some correlation with the length of the cable I'm using. My current configuration requires me to use a 10m / 33ft. HDMI cable (I've tried both high- and low-end brands until now). However, everytime I use a significantly shorter cable (under 4m / 13ft.) everything is fine.
I've tried different resolutions (from 1080i, 720p, 480p and even 640 x 480), different refresh rates (50Hz/60Hz), with or without overscan and various display profiles.
It might be worth mentioning that I've cleaned both the HDMI cables and the port (the computer was also cleaned on the inside by Apple Service Staff just a few months ago). I've had different arrangements and cable paths in order to eliminate the posibility of interference - the issue occurs in every room, whether the cable is coiled or stretched out.
I would really appreciate and be very thankful for any help or suggestions. I'm sorry about the length of the post but I wanted to give out as many details as possible and be very specific, since I haven't been able to find other accounts of the exact same issue.
    Thank you.

    JonnyAlpha,
a miniature screw extractor would probably be your best bet. One manufacturer of them is Moody Tools.

  • No signal from Apple TV

I just got the new Apple TV and get no signal from it on my HDTV. I have an older Samsung TX-p3064w which has DVI and not HDMI.
I used a DVI to HDMI cable but get no signal at all - just a blue screen which means the tv received no signal. I know that DVI is not supported, but I was hoping to use this before I had to buy another T.V..
The T.V. can do either 1080i or 480p using DVI. I tried using two cables and no signal.
Does the T.V. have to do 720 in order to give a signal? Is there a certain cable I should try?
Any ideas on why no signal?

I was experiencing the same problem and discovered it is actually a 'handshake' issue. The firmware on the TV needs to be compatible with appletv. I solved it by updating the firmware for my Philips LCD 1080p tv. If you are using an older tv, you probably have to go to the manufacturer's support website to download the updated software on a gig stick and then upload it onto your TV. It should work thereafter. Good luck.

  • Compatibility? TV is not widescreen, but is HD

I have a Sony KV-32HS510 TV that I am wondering if it will be compatible with Apple TV. It's a standard format (4:3) screen, but it is HD. You have to watch the HD channels with bars across the top.
Does anybody know if this type of TV works with Aplle TV, and what special cable I might need.

I have a Sony KP-53HS10 which is a 4:3 projection TV that supports 1080i and 480p on its component inputs and my Sony works fine with the Apple TV. As long as you have component or HDMI inputs on your TV with a wide-screen mode (16:9) it should work. You can even use DVI if you buy an HDMI to DVI adapter (for example, I've connected my Apple TV to my Apple Cinema Display using just such an adapter). I've also connected the Apple TV to a Sharp 13" enhanced resolution LCD TV that has a 16:9 mode for compatibility with 720p and 1080i inputs (over its component inputs).
I suspect that your TV has HD-compatible component inputs which SHOULD work with the Apple TV (not to be confused with a simple composite video input or even s-video which will NOT work).
According to the specs on Amazon, it looks like you have a nice TV and it should definitely work with the Apple TV. Here is what Amazon says about your model:
Compatible with 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i formats; Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction feature upconverts analog NTSC signals to near-HD quality
DVI input (rear), 2 component inputs (rear), analog audio output (rear), 4 A/V inputs (3 front, 1 rear), 3 S-Video inputs (2 front, 1 rear), and 1 each S-Link output and input

  • Produced DVD Exhibits Missing Music or Button Action, Even Though Check Project Tool and Play OK

Well, I have been successfully and faultlessly using Encore CS3 for several months, when all of a sudden my latest production suffers from the errors noted in the title; both Check Project Tool and "Play from Here" have always, in these problem cases, been OK. Just the discs weren't.
By the way, I am running this on a BOXX with dual Xeon 3.0, 4 gig ram, nVidia Quadro FX 1500, application on 10krpm 150 gig hd, and data on a slower 750 gig RAID 0, with everything cleaned and defragged, etc., etc. As yet, my problem is only with Encore, and not with more recently run Premiere (with Aspect HD), After Effects, Photoshop, and Ultra - nary, ever a problem with these! Also, never any problems with any DVDs, all burned 8X on a Sony writer, using DVD-R Verbatim discs. In the subject instances I assembled a disc format in Encore following my own self written 10 page procedure manual, step by step checklist, with ALL steps documented. So, I may be wrong, but I'm always consistant. And Check Project Tool, and preplay in Encore no errors, and worked perfectly, as usual.
But first burned disc played no audio on the main menu, while chapter menu music (from same source file as usual), was fine. And motion pictures in both main and chapter menus worked fine. Soooooo, complete recheck of project showed everything fine, and same Adobe checks worked fine, and another burned disc, same fault.
So, uninstalled Encore CS3, including preferences, etc., and re-installed. And brought in everything again, and reconstructed the structure from scratch again, and everything tested fine. Then I burned a test disc, 1 pass low rate Adobe Media Encoder converting from 1080i .avi to 480i, and the disc played perfectly! BUT THEN........ I reincoded at vbr 2pass, high quality, and burned twenty discs at 480p. And everything plays fine, EXCEPT, on all four of my test DVD players, the "timeline" plays fine, video and audio, the main menu pictures and music and "Play Movie" and "Chapter Selections" buttons all work, but although the Chapter Sub-menu pictures and music are as intended, the "Chapter 1" button is highlighted, as intended, but you can't move from there to the other chapters button or the button to return to the main menu.
And again, these all worked fine when the Check Project Tool was utilized just prior to setting up the DVD files and burning - and no, I touched NOTHING else in the meantime.
So, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
And I would certainly appreciate insights from anyone about what the matter might be (besides Microsoft), so long as the insights are thought provoking, whether they are valid or not.
But seriously, this has me stumped. And I really will NEVER, ever burn and print (full color!) 20 discs again without fully testing the first one burned and then never change anything in Encore.

Harm - thanks for the suggestion!
Given what I now know about transcoding and interlace effects, 480i insead of 480p is totally unacceptable to me, for excellent reasons explained in a moment. If Encore only works correctly with 480i (anyone have any thoughts as to why that might be true?) then its time for me to drop Encore and move on to another DVD assembler. I'd not care to do this, as I finally have all study of Encore and my related procedures manual put together, and I would certainly miss some of the fine and relatively easy features of Encore, to say nothing of the use of PixelPops panels in Encore. One other point. I badly mis-spoke myself in the original post, and I apologize for that. I should have said that Adobe Media Encoder was being used within Encore to encode from 1080p, not 1080i. More about all that in a moment.
So, I now have a further question, if I cannot get a work around for this. Anyone have any thoughts on an alternate DVD assembler with a decent transcoder, for $1,000 or less? No matter what, I intend to continue to use other Adobe products.
Now, as to why 480p! And I may just run an informational post about this sometime. Several weeks ago I had finally decided that what I had been putting together as 480i was just totally unacceptable because of the deinterlacing artifacts shown when run through the standard DVD player and typical LCD screen. The noise, particularly the misquito noise, the twitter, etc. was just too much. So I set aside three days, and all I did was run tests of various sequences of transcoding 1080i to 480 whatever. And of all the permutations and combinations, the clearly superior result was the following. As our friends at Cineform have so rightly commented, going from 1080 to 480 gives us all kinds of headroom to work with. So my current procedure is to first take the Cineform "visually perfect" 1080i .avi files and using the Cineform transcoder, convert them to 1080p.avi. Then, as noted above, I use the Adobe Media Encoder to go from 1080p to 480p. Now that picture, I am really happy with! And by the way, what is produced by using the Adobe Media Encoder to transcode directly from 1080i to 480p is truly grotesque - the horizontal distortion is so horrible it has to be seen to be believed! Other variations produced from good to marginal results. The closest acceptable was using Cineform to go from 1080i to 1080p and then to 480i, and then using AME to go from 480i to 480p DVD.
By the way, the final, best otherwise encoded 480i result showed up only marginally better than what I am doing now, when shown on a 109 inch screen using that great chip in the latest Toshiba HD-DVD player for the deinterlacing function. But when the same disc was played on your typical consumer DVD player and flat panel screen, the result was marginal. I have read many places that we are better off letting the consumer players or screens conduct the deinterlacing of our 480i productions, instead of producing 480p discs ourselves. Given the transcoders I currently have to work with, I would say that is just nonsense. If all the consumers had players with great deinterlacers that would be true. But it isn't true!

  • AVCHD/ HDV- What's the point

This is probably as stupid as it sounds, but it suddenly struck me today, but what is the point of having AVCHD/ HDV compatibility and editing on FCE/ FCP if you can only burn the projects onto a standard def DVD? Does FCE give you any other options in tems of what you do with your freshly edited High Def content? Do you lose a heap of quality when you burn it to DVD?

    hey there qsack,
in the USN i was told the only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask. you can send your HDV project back to tape in your cam to watch on your HDTV... the shoot/edit/distribute flow that we have in DV, is not yet ready w/ HDV, partly because of the cost of the burners & the R&D to develop the authoring software for mass commercial use(make it simple enough for average users as w/ iDVD). also the major studios are probably closely guarding the technology in part due concerns about piracy, also the HD-disc format war thing.... these are just some of the speculations on why we can't yet burn our HD movies to disc.
i've burned some of my HDV content to SD discs & they look pretty good, because i had good lighting to start with. though i dropped down a lot in terms of res from 1080i to 480p. i was okay w/ the results & as w/ most graphic types be it print, photo or video, it's usually better to start out w/ more or larger(1080/720) & if you have to shrink it(480) you still have a decent image rather than have a small image & try to scale up. for example--a photo from a 10 megapixel DSLR "RAW" file will still have a lot of detail & look good when it gets down-converted to a JPEG vs. a photo from a 2 megapixel phone camera that starts as a JPEG.

  • MBP Retina bad display on external Dell display

My MBPr LCD display is great: crisp and clear.
However, when I connect my desktop Dell display, the result is washed out and difficult to read fonts.
I've tried with both mini-DVI and mini-VGA.   The mini-VGA is perhaps marginally better, but in both
    cases is borderline unusable.
    Any clues?
    Thanks!

I've a 2011 MBA, 2008 MBP and a Dell U2410 24" 1920x1200-native setup with zero problems, until I replace the aging MBP with rMBP. Now I get the same issue as the OP.
I've searched extensively, but "blurry images, washed-out colors, smudgy text" isn't very scientific/concrete so it's not easy to have a clear-cut case. On this same issue (I believe), I've found the following threads:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4119545
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=15565120
I'm trying to document the issue as much as possible, with photos taken off the display. (I've found screen capture doesn't work). They're posted at http://goo.gl/XLdMf
    Further background
The same mini-DP to DP cable is used to connect MBA, rMBP (and my previous 2008 MBP) and have been in service since I've the Dell. No issues at all, except the rMBP.
I've tried HDMI-HDMI from rMBP to Dell. Same lousy display quality.
The Dell U2410 accepts DP, HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs.
On the monitor itself, I can press a few buttons to ask for display info. In both cases, the Dell reports it is displaying in 1920x1200 @ 60Hz. (So this rules out the problem of trying to display 1920x1080 on a 1920x1200 native display).
I've done a Factory Reset on the Dell, to no avail.
    When the MacBookAir4,2 (2011 MBA) is connected, a range of resolutions is available:1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, 1920x1200x 1600x1200, 1600x1000, 1344x1008, 1344x840, 1280x1024, 1280x960, 1280x800, 1024x768, 1024x640, 960x600, 800x600, 800x500, 720x576, 640x480
    When MacBookPro10,1 (rMBP) is connected, only 3 choices present itself:1920x1200, 1600x1000, 1280x800
Comparing the 2 Colors tab photos, notice how, when the rMBP is connected, the fonts have a white shadow all around the black fonts.
Comparing the 2 Display tab photos, look at the "1920" in the selected "1920x1200" option. Notice how, when the rMBP is connected, the bottom of the "1", "9", "2", "0" are smudged together

  • AppleTV with a 480p/1080i (non 720p friendly) TV

I have an older HDTV -- 480i/480p/1080i component input only. How will an AppleTV handle 720p files since I cannot use 720p as an input option?

So it upscales 540p and 720p to 1080i via component? If so, is the upscaler very good?
Additionally, if I view JPGs (mostly 6-8mp), do they display as 1920x1080? 704×480 upscaled even on a 46" TV looks pretty bad.

  • Use on a 1080i TV

I'm considering buying an AppleTV. I've been using a Mac Mini on my TV, but the new AppleTV software looks slick.
I've got a somewhat old Sony rear-projection 61" TV that does 1080i (though component input). I've used it off my HDV camcorder so I know it works. It will accept 720p signals, but downscales them to 480p, so I don't want that. It won't accept 1080p at all.
I know the AppleTV will connect to 1080i. When set that way, will it still play HD video in HD (by upscaling 720p to 1080i)? What will photos look like?
I wish it could play real 1080i, since I've got lots of home movies in that format. But such is life.

If the tv is set to output 1080i, everything it plays (480i/480p/720p) will all be upscaled to 1080i.
IMO photos look very good on the tv.

  • Apple tv  2 - resolution problem: 480p instead of 720p

    Hi,
my ATV2 is hooked to my Onkyo TX-SR508 via HDMI, wich is hooked to my Optoma HD65 projector via HDMI.
unfortunately my ATV2 is only outputting 480p!
Strangely when ATV2 is booting, it shows the apple logo in 720p, but when the menu comes on it is in 480p.
    I tried the following:
When ATV2 is hooked directly to the Projector is outputs 720p no problem. I have an XBOX360 and digital tv hooked to my Onkyo TX-SR508 as well, showing 720p en 1080i no problem.
tried different cables and power up/down sequences to no avail.
Any solutions for getting ATV2 to output 720p through my Onkyo TX-SR508??

I just bought an ATV2 two days ago. I had this same problem...ATV2 would default to 480p no matter what I did. The customer support line is useless.
I am running all of my hardware (Tivo, SACD/DVDAudio, PS3, etc) through Denon preamp that scales all input formats to 1080i/29.97 for my CRT front projection system—the "TV", for simplicity—with a DVI input (HDMI > HDCP compliant DVI plug). I found a 100% reliable solution to this, because it's an HDMI-handshake problem where the Denon unit does not get a list of supported modes from the TV. I assume all scaling receivers would behave similarly, as there's not much difference between them.
I turn on the Denon unit (which also powers on the ATV2 since it's plugged into it for power) and turn on the TV. The ATV2 will start up and load in 480p. I turn off the TV, the Denon unit is no longer reporting a blank list of supported input modes, and the ATV2 switches to 720p mode. When I turn the TV back on, no new set of input modes is reported and it stays in 720p mode every time.
It does not work for me to simply boot the Denon unit first with the ATV2, then power on the TV. It gives me a 1280x720 layout chopped off to 480p, so I can only see a small portion of the ATV2's menu (for reasons I don't really understand).
Power on the receiver/preamp and ATV2
    Power on the TV/display
Allow the ATV2 to boot to its menu
    Power off the TV/display
    Power on the TV/display
    720p works
(Try this with a direct connection to a DVI-only TV and see if it's similar)

Visiontek ATI Theater 550 PVR card
    Gigabyte wireless lan
    400GB WD HD
    Sony DVD-Rom
    Windows XP MCE 2005
I can view the desktop and Media center at 480p EDTV and 480 SD, but when I switch to 1080i HDTV the screen becomes black with a few areas where the desktop can be seen.  I treid turning on media center but i just get a black screen where the mouse just flickers.  I tried updating the video drivers but that didnt help.  Also I cannot view the entire desktop when I am using the 480p setting.  What can be done to use 1080i and how can I view the entire desktop?

I am using a Panasonic 50” Monitor on computer configured for my home Media controller and the only way I found to get full screen resolution is find Graphics card that will putout native full resolution on the Phase Display.   I looked for months and finally found Graphic Card that as all of the large screen TV and monitors programmed into its drives.  Like it had the resolution for my Panasonic down to the pixel all the 16:9, 16:10’s and others.  Working the internet from recliner with RF Keyboard and Gyro Mouse, you just wave in the air to move the cursor is just as fine a display as get with normal 4:3 monitor on you Desk Top.  Importers name is Pixel perfect, link is http://www.16-by-9.com/

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 9 Exporting in 1080i/p

I am trying to make an introduction for my friend, and I am only using the text tool in Adobe Premiere, this should be high definition as it is. Although whenever I got to export something in 1080i or 1080p, what comes out on my desktop is the video file, an audio file, and usually another file with a .xml extension. How can I get a 1080i video in one file with audio AND video?
Seems like it should be that way anyways.

I get this error shown. I went to the website and installed the newest version of Adobe Media Encoder for Windows 7 64-bit and still got this error.
It does work with DVD Widescreen, but that has 480p which isn't very good.

  • Quantum Client keeps changing to 480p Video!

So I have 3 Quantum clients in my home.  On two of them the video keeps changing to 480p and only fitting the 4:3 letterbox size.  I go to settings and it says 1080i or 1080p or 720p but it does not matter.  The output stays at 480p.  So to fix it I have to take out the HDMI from the TV and plug it in to a different input.  Then it keeps the settings for a few days but then reverts back to 480p.  One is hooked to a new Vizio TV and one is hooked to a new Samsung TV.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks in advance!

Other then to say I am not seeing it with my Samsung "e" series (2012-2013).  Mine stays set at 1080P.
Is this happening on the VMS or on the IPC,   or both.
