1080i60 = Pal?

I have a project that is in 1080i60 at 29.97 fps...How can I convert to ntsc? I thought 1080i50 was pal? I have tried to find discussions but I am unssuccessful. I need to make a ntsc HDDVD, but cannot seem to figure it out. Any suggestions would help.

I have the 1080i60, but it the file also says that its pal.
I have an HD burner...imac 1.8 dual processor circa august 06.
I have looked into my manuals, but to no avail. I keep getting a message that my assets are pal...I have my settings for ntsc. I was able to burn it as a pal dvd, but it wont play in anything accept my mac dvd player.
My assets are either mpeg 2 or h.264 (mpeg4).

i have a motion based animation. 1920 x 1080 that i need to convert for use in a pal dvd. seems simple, but all i need to do is run it through the 1080i60 PAL preset in compressor (which only changes the fps to 25) and then compress that as a mpeg?
    am i missing anything?

Hope you asked us to disregard because you figured it out or got help, not because you're giving up!
There are some excellent white papers (pdfs) on this site about FCP workflows.
One thing to keep in mind is that changing the easy setup will only change the default settings for new elements you create. Existing sequences will keep their original settings, which if you think about it is the way you would want it.
Also, you don't have to make a separate version of the project, you can duplicate the sequenc ein the original project - I find file management easier this way.

  • Very best 1080i60 to PAL DVD workflow, please?

    Hey guys,
I've been handed some footage shot in HDV1080i60 on a Z1. Trouble is that it was supposed to be shot in 1080i50, because we need to make a PAL DVD at the end of this..
So I'm wondering what, using the FCS2 suite is the best workflow.. I'm thinking of capturing 1080i60 and then converting that to PAL via Compressor using Optical flow..
I don't know if it is better to edit in 1080i60, then convert before going to DVD, or to convert before editing..
Any advice on what would be the ideal workflow would be gratefully appreciated..
    Pete

Hmm, yep of course converting the copius quantities of raw footage will take forever. Thanks for the advice on a editing codec..
I was gonna say that yeah while most PAL DVD players will play NTSC, that I cannot deliver on NTSC..
But now I'm thinking that provided it plays on their player they'd never know the difference. (Wedding video)
Maybe I'll send through a draft copy as NTSC & see if they grumble about playability. If not I'll deliver NTSC DVD..
    Thanks for the answer..

  • 1080i60 to PAL conversion...

    hi all
Using FCP 5, i'm trying to output to SD PAL 25 fps from an HD 1080i60 project. Needless to say i'm getting a very 'stuttery' result with the video quality...
any suggestions on how to make it smoother would be gratefully received.
    thanks

Try this (on a short clip - as a test). In Compressor, make a copy of the DV PAL setting. Select your new custom preset and in the Frame Controls tab of the inspector change Output Fields to "Bottom First" and change Rate Conversion to "Better" or "Best".
Save the preset and apply it to your test clip.

  • 1080i60 to PAL Help

    hi,
sorry for the detailed queston, but i wasn't able to find an answer to all of this. and it's been a few years since i was deep in video production/formats!
i have some footage in FCP thats hd1080i60 (1440 x 1080). it needs to go to PAL. i'm not sure if there are hd PAL formats, or if PAL is just PAL, 720 x 576 or 768 x 576...
anyway, what is the cleanest way to do this? create a new sequence in FCP that's set to PAL and render, or...?
also, is there a good online resource index for definitions and terminology with things like anamorphic, etc?

it needs to go to PAL.
Do you need to build a PAL DVD? What fps has your movie?
also, is there a good online resource index for definitions and terminology with things like anamorphic, etc?
DVDSP user manual has a good Glosary (FCP and Compressor manual haven't !!).
After all, Google it! I use sometimes Wikipedia for such searchs.

  • How do you convert NTSC footage to PAL?

I've got some footage on a Mini-DV tape recorded with an NTSC camera, which I need to edit in my FCE PAL project. I can playback and see the footage on my Sony DSR-PDX10 DVCam, but FC Express doesn't recognise it when I connect my camera to my computer. Do I need an NTSC camera for that? What should I do?

    Hello independentfilmmaker,
after a bit of research it seems that the issue is the signal that the camera is sending out. I'm no geek, but from what I understand the camera sends out an identifying signal to the computer. If that signal differs from the footage that is actually being captured, there is a conflict and you won't be able to capture. Have a look at these:
    http://www.dvd-software.info/forums/ftopic1858.html
    http://forums.dvdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=17789
So there seems to be a possibility that you might be able to capture using iMovie. I know that it can be done with HDV, since i did it a couple years back using a Sony HVR-A1E to play and capture tapes shot in 1080i60. Alternatively you could try some other capture software:

    hope this helps

  • FCE will not capture PAL footage

    Hi,
I'm trying to make a video for some English friends with footage they sent to me which is in PAL format. Normally I use HDV, so I changed the setting under "Easy Setup" to DV-PAL, but FCE will not let me capture it. The camera reads it and displays it on the screen, but it is not recognized by the computer. When I try to "capture now" an error message eventually appears saying "This operation could not be completed as there is no video."
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Sorry...I am located in the U.S. My "Easy Setup" setting is normally HDV 1080i60 but I have changed it to DV-PAL. I don't know much about PAL or the different PAL settings (anamorphic, 32khz, etc). I'm not sure I understand your last question, but the camera does display "DVout i.Link" once connected to the computer.
I have tried trashing my preferences but no luck. Apologies for not knowing more about the situation but some of this stuff is a bit over my head. Thanks!

  • 1080p pour export quality for 25p material from Canon HF100 PAL

    Hi
I have now tested iMovie 11 with a Canon HF100 PAL version. Shooting in progressive.
The AIC import has good quality.
New 1080p export gives same pour quality as before when using QuickTime 7 for h.264 export.
    AIC export provides good quality.
So still nu easy way for export from iMovie. Is this common or is it a camera compatibility issue?
    Thanks
    Olof

I just posted this for another user with the same problem.
I have a Sony VG10 camcorder that shoots 30p and records it as 1080i60. iMovie sees this as interlaced video and deinterlaces it IF I use most FX.
So I did a bit of googling and found there is a simple solution. I bought Steve Mullens newest version (09 and 11) of his "Ins and Outs of iMovie." With it I got a free copy of his iMakeFullHD utility. So after importing AVCHD I run the utility on the folder of clips and in a few seconds all the clips are now marked as progressive. Which is actually what they are! iMovie now treats them as 1080p30 -- exactly as it should.
When reading about the utility I remember skipping the stuff on PAL HD camcorders. So I just reread it and it's no big deal eitherl.
If you shoot 1080i50, the video is marked as 1080p25. This is exactly the reverse of what my camera does. So while I need to use iMakeFullHD, PAL users do not.
If you shoot 1080p25, the video is marked as 1080i50. This is exactly like my camera. So you have to use iMakeFullHD to remark it is as progressive -- which is what it is.
Now Ive no idea why Sony or Canon did what they did, but they did. After buying a $2000 camcorder, buying the book was by far the simpler solution.
I know he has a section on 1080p50 and 1080p60 from the tms700. Didn't apply to me so i skimmed it. Also, having had imovie 09 i was surprised to read that 11 now supports real 1080p24. There's also a section on removing 2-3 pulldown from 1080i60 to get 1080p24. Again i just skimmed this in case sony were to release a firmware update so I could shoot 24fps.
One more thing I learned. Because my video really is progressive, I can use all FX. They'll always look perfect.
But, if you shoot 1080i50 -- which imovie sees as 1080p25 -- the good news is that imovie will never deinterlace the clips causing a loss of resolution. But, the clips realy are interlace. this means that sometimes you may see combing during the FX. There are very clear pix of what this looks like in the ebook. But, the solution is so simple -- only shoot 1080p25!
Most of us want to shoot progresssive anyway!
The nice thing is i followed the instrictions on burning 1080 avchd video to DVDs and they play in HD on my BD player. And, i didn't have to buy a BD burner.

  • Emergency questions exporting for dvd studio pro (ntsc and pal)

    Hi,
I'm under a tight timeline and would appreciate any help possible. I'm experimenting with outputs/burning today so the real thing can happen tomorrow.
I have an hour long project that was shot on two different kinds of cams -- a sony hdv V1U and pan dvx100b. The first shot mostly in 16:9, the second squeeze 24p. We imported all footage as non-hd though, because the V1u has had problems syncing properly with hd settings with final cut. The issue/question now is this-
I don't know what file format (I'm assuming mpeg-4 for DVD studio pro, but using compressor or no?) or settings to use -- I'm used to mpeg-4, but for some reason it is coming out all grainy/pixelated and I'm not sure if I need to adjust the settings. Also, once exported into a usable/high quality format, I need to burn a ntsc dvd but also a pal dvd -- I've burned pal dvds on dvd studio pro before and know adjusting the settings is just in preferences, but I'm assuming the video will need to be converted into a different kind of file. Or no?
My sequence settings are 1440x1080 (16:9), quicktime video settings compressor hdv 1080i60. When I export as a quicktime file the conversion is great and no problems, but that isn't workable in dvd studio pro.
I would appreciate any advice you could offer,
    Thank you,
    Tenzin

Thank you, I'm trying that -- someone else just mentioned it needing to be an mpeg 2 file as well. The trouble I'm having now in compressor is it isn't converting when I press submit -- nothing is showing up in the batch monitor. I've tried this directly exporting from fcp using compressor, as well exporting quicktime from fcp and then using the quicktime file in compressor.
I'm not used to using compressor so I'm thinking I am not doing something properly in this process? Thank you for the suggestions, they are reassuring. Do you know if the same file produced by compressor can be used for the pal dvd?

  • FCP & QuickTime DvcPro HD Digitizer 720p 25 for PAL Big World Missing!!!!

    Now,
after I've been days on DvxUser forum, tried various solution found there I'm ending up with a simple question as an HVX200 user:
    - What's the problem with the PAL Huge World, Apple? As far as I know my International clients when ask for an Ntsc copy is for US or Japan (the other few that use it are out of the big Business).
    - So WHY Apple, that is in the video/film business since the begging of NLE systems, always forget? or it's late in developping Pal solutions?
    From Panasonic Q&A P2 site:
Q5 : Can the AG-HVX200 output the SD or HD signal through the IEEE1394 terminal?
A : The AG-HVX200 can output the SD or HD signal through the IEEE1394 terminal according to the menu setting.
Select the format in the "REC FORMAT" item of CAMERA menu.
In the native format, 720/24PN, 720/25PN or 720/30PN, the AG-HVX200 cannot output the signal of camera picture through the IEEE1394 terminal. In this case, record a picture on a P2 card once and then playback it.
When output the signal recorded on the P2 card, the signal is output through the IEEE1394 terminal in its recorded format and cannot be output through the IEEE1394 terminal in the up-converted format or the down-converted one.
    - The only easy setup for Log & Capture DVCPRO HD is 1080i50. That's it!
    - While in Ntsc has 1080i60 and all 720p: 24/30/60.
Even with the Sequences setup!! Thanks to some guys that wrote a great pdf and also an Xml file for a sequence 720p 25 and 50...
So the HUGE World of Pal users has to help themself....
Hopefully if these 30 glorious years are just the begging, the next will be also HD PAL years!!

    Hi Shane,
thanks for your point of view, I always appreciate your advices in this forum.
Back to issue, the problem is Capture (digitizer) that is limited to 1080i50 not for Compressor (if you look inside the Capture Preset 1080i 50), so you can't use any other option than P2 card or Firestore to get the other HD Pal formats.
I also want to share (may be someone else already did it, but as in latin "Repetita juvant") the link on that helpful site on FCP and DvcPro HD, and Hvx200 also. He has done a great job for all of us pal'ers:
    http://www.aulich-adamski.de/wp-content/720p50HVX200en.pdf
    So the points are:
    - The world is going HD? Yes! So our business!
    - ok Hdv has been adopted by major prosumer camera maker.
    - the DvcPro HD Pal codec is not that new (the Varicam, the 900, etc).
    - the HVX200 in just few months, as you can read on DvxUser forum, is very popular in all of the application (indie, commercial, music video, doc, feature film or tv series) and the results are very good.
    - Is FCP a pro application? Yes, so...support professional people.
    - It's much more easier to work in FCP with DvcPro codec than Hdv.
    - I've seen many posts of Hvx users that were asking for a live capture solution apart from Firestore and similar. We are in that group, as we've to shoot hours of live content.
    - The new Mac Book Pro cannot (by now) accept P2 Cards 'cause the express slot. So we were buying two of them for HD work but we put them on hold and keep the PBook. So the alternative for MBP is capturing live via firewire, but limited in Pal market.
    - Last but not least: Panasonic DvcPro HD Fcp plugin Frame Converter (for VFR) does NOT work in Pal even if you capture through P2 card.
May be is also Panasonic that is slow in updating Pal tools, who knows, but the only other alternative (that you can find on the site above) is using a Component HD card to capture the other formats, that means that you have to carry in studio/location at least a G5...
Finally, as I'm not a developper: does it take that long and is that heavy work to translate a QT digitizer codec from 24p to 25p? or from 60 to 50?
I'm pretty sure that if you do an online poll for Hvx users to pay 5 euro each one to have that codecs done by some developper, they will !!!
    Take care,
    piero

  • Mixing HD 1080i50 25 fps with 1080i60 29.97 fps The way to go?

    Hi everyone,
I'm working on a project in Final Cut Studio Pro 6.0.5 Macbook Pro.
70% of my rushes are 1080i50 but a good 30% are 1080i60. On top of that, a large amount of the 1080i50 rushes have been digitiized DV PAL, not by me!
I figure I will need to conform considering the mixed formats. I know I won't have too much trouble re-digitising the DV Pal to it correct 1080i50 but I am concerned about the 1080i60.
I have begun my project in with a 1080i50 timeline and have put the the 1080i60 in it and it works ok, strobes a bit. I'm wondering if this will be ok when I come to conform or if it will continue strobing.
If anyone has worked with these mixed mediums before please advise.
    Thanks,
    Jamie

    Thanks Gerrry,
I could get the original material that is DV and recapture but it is 15hrs worth. I'm cutting a doc. So i figured it would be better just to conform it later rather than re-capturing again.
Do you think that is ok?

  • HDV video is 1080i60, FCP exports as 1080i50?

Exporting my 1080i60 project using the FCP basic "qucktime export" shows up as a 1080i50 file when played in QT. Also encodes to a PAL DVD format when using Compressor. The "easy setup" menu shows the proj as 1080i60.
Edit: I also checked the imported HDV video in QT and the "Item Properties" for FCP. They both show up as 1080i60. The camera I am using is a HDR HC1 1080i60.

  • Error importing into DVD Studio-"cannot import PAL asset into NTSC project"

I get this message after exporting from FCP the following in Quicktime:
    HDV-1080i60 or HDV-1080i50
Are these PAL formats? If so, how do I export HDV in NTSC?
    Many thanks

i60 is NTSC and i50 is PAL
You may want to just export them as 10 bit uncompressed (or 8 bit if less room) and encode in Compressor (quicker than HDV) or export as HDV and compress in Compressor or send from FCP to Compressor.
Exporting as uncompressed gives good results and seems to be the quickest on encodes

  • Best workflow for converting NTSC tv show to PAL?

The company I work for edits a TV show in DVCPRO HD 1080i60. We distribute it to a station in Europe, and for about a year we've sent them the programs on DVCAM tape, 16:9 letterbox, NTSC, rendered in a 720x480 sequence, 29.97 fps. I figured they took care of the process of switching it PAL since they never asked us to do anything differently.
Well now they have. Now any tape we send them needs to be in 16:9 anamorphic and PAL.
In regards to the first issue, changing to 16:9 anamorphic seems as simple as clicking the Anamorphic check box in the sequence settings. But the PAL issue has me stumped. An engineer friend told me that all I should have to do is print the program to a PAL DVCAM deck, and that should do the trick. So my thinking is that I export the program as a DVCPRO HD Quicktime file, put that into a PAL 16:9 anamorphic sequence, and print to tape using a PAL deck.
Anything I'm missing? Is it as simple as that or more complicated? Any thoughts are welcome.
    jesse.

Sorry fellow Missoulian, it is NOT that simple. FCP doesn't convert the frames rates properly...the proper pulldown removal, frame rate conversion does not happen well in FCP. If you have Avid 4.0...it would. That version does this VERY well. BUT, we are talking FCP.
Best option, output NTSC and send to a dub house to have the conversion done on proper machinery. Bill the client for this dub...unless it is part of the deliverable and therefore part of the money they pay you. If they changed the deliverable to require this conversion, then they should be then paying more money so that you can have this conversion done right.
Second best option, export a self contained QT file, and use Compressor to do the conversion, frame settings set to FULL. The drawback? This takes a LOT of time. And you will have to do tests to see if it looks right, and adjust settings to match.
ME? I send it out of house to be dubbed. But you are in Missoula where that doesn't exist, and finding someone with a KONA/DECKLINK/MATROX card is a challenge.

  • HDV video is 1080i60, FCE exports as 1080i50?

Select the sequence in the browser and go to item properties. What exactly does it say? What export function are you using?
