1080p HD footage to SD DVD discs

Not sure if this goes in Final Cut, Compressor or DVD Studio Pro. So I'll just post it here and someone can move it if it's the wrong spot. Second off, I'm real tired. Too much editing.
I swear I go through this cycle over and over again.
I'm trying to get the highest quality output from 1080 footage on a standard DVD. I followed Ken Stone's guide (http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hd_dvds_on_sd_dvdsyoung.html), but to no avail. I just got the "Playback feature may not be available on this Disc" error when I put the DVD in the DVD player..
So here's my setup, and what I've tried.
Exported my FCP timeline to Compressor
Compressed to a 10.3 mbps h.264 file
Took that to DVD Studio Pro on an HD DVD project (I think that's the problem, given it's a standard DVD).
But when I tried putting the h.264 file in a SD DVD project in DVDSP, it won't accept the file. Hmmm...
So should I use compressor to get an mpeg-2 and burn the mpeg-2 in a SD DVD project in DVDSP? And is that the highest quality you can get when you go from 1080 footage to a standard DVD?
Thanks!

Tell them to get an Apple TV2 and stream the content from their home computer. All you need to deliver at that point is the m4v file at 720p. You can ship it on a data DVD.
Around 2000 we purchased a Sony 300 disk CD carousel player. As we purchased new disks or were given them by artist friends, we also put the material into an iTunes library. As the years went on we added airport expresses to connect all the stereos in the house and outbuildings (4) into one network. The practical result of this is the Sony CD player has not been turned on in 2 or 3 years.
The same thing is going to happen with video content. There are internet based delivery systems in place already that work and will only become more robust with time.
The audio/video server will be (if it isn't already) the core of the residential entertainment experience. Blu-Ray is not really part of that scenario. I really don't believe it will last all that long. Apple has taken the convergence path and done much to make it happen. They are getting it right.

  • Using footage from DVD disc shot with sony handycam

I'm trying to import some footage that was shot with a sony handycam. The camera records directly onto a mini DVD disc. I put the disc in and copied the files onto my desktop. When I import the files into FCP, it recognizes the .vob files, but not the other ones.....so, all I have in FCP is the video, but no audio. Any ideas on how to get the audio into FCP? Trying to avoid playing the mini DVD disc on a player and recording the audio, then importing that and then trying to sync....but will resort to that if necessary.
    Thanks in advance.

Get MPEG Streamclip (its free) from www.versiontracker.com. Use this to convert the files from your handycam to QuickTime videos using the DV codec.
Be aware that there will be a loss in quality as you convert your MPEG-2 videos to an editable format. Its unavoidable, and the reason professionals do not use direct to DVD cameras.

  • Why can't I burn a dvd disc on my macBook pro ?

I transferred some video footage to "iMovie' for editing and when I tried to burn it to a dvd disc, there was no option for that operation. All of the choices were to transfer it to You Tube, of facebook. Can I burn a dvd disc on my macBook pro laptop or not?

If you have a macbook with internal or USB external Superdrive, insert disk, and an option appears for burning files.
Otherwise drop the movie into a folder and click on the settings button of the folder and choose "burn .......to disk"

    Hi b
Most probably You didn't use Verbatim DVD discs
    or not DVD-R
or burn speed x1 but may be x16
My worst scenario "No-Name DVD+RW and x16" and with less than 5Gb free space on
    internal hard disk.
*Quality of the DVD-disc depends on several things.*
    • I DON'T USE the function Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie - IT IS DESTRUCTIVE !!
Just drop the movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window - then iDVD do the
rendering and so much better. Especially if there is photos in the movie.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk - should be about 25Gb when all material is imported
and structured. This for iDVD to work with - iDVD can't use an extern hard disk as scratch.
(less than 5Gb - result is most probably of no use at all)
    • Best Quality isn't Top - better is Best Performances (up to 60 min. movie)
    confused naming -
in iDVD'08 there is Pro Quality AND I like it. (and 120 min.)
    • Media brand - I use Verbatim
    • Type: IF SL DVDs -> DVD-R my choice no DVD+R or +/-RW
    • I save a Disc-Image and burn this at an as SLOW speed as possibly (eg x1) with Toast™
(Disc Util tool can also do this)
in iDVD’08 this can be set - not in previous versions AND IT IS IMPORTANT - Less errors and gives
a disk that plays on more type of players eg PC or Mac computer that are more selective than
    stand alone DVD-players.
    from Karsten:
    • Keep to same standard NTSC or PAL trough all steps
    from: Matti Haveri:
    • Is it jerky (=maybe some part of the workflow deinterlaced the footage -- iMovie can do this behind the users's back quite well!)
    • Or is it awfully jerky (=maybe the field dominance is wrong -- this happens very easily when importing upper field first stuff from MPEG).
This is what come's first to my mind.

  • 1080p 50 footage to Blu ray appears to convert to either 1080p 25 or 720p 50 is Share FCPX  or Compressor

Has anyone been able to burn 1080p 50 footage to Blu ray, I can only seem to create a file of 1080p 25 or 720p 50 in either FCPX or Compressor 4 as the 50 option is greyed out in 1080p. As far as I can tell most blu ray players can handle AVCHD 1080p 50, even after the latest upgrades this still does not work. The footage is on the time line and project properties are correct.

    SteveMPYC wrote:
…  as the .mov file over 200 Gig it wouldn't fit on even dual sided Blu ray. …
    wrong assumption.
'Disks' (BR/DVD) are completely different encoded than the stuff in your timeline.
To keep things simple, the rule is:
    length matters, not size.
A single-layer DVD with maximum quality settings fits ~60min of video.
And, due to standards, is always SDef.
Same disk fits ~20min of HDef in a sort of BluRay-standard = you can burn a BluRay-structure onto DVD-r ... not fully compatible, but for 'quick'n dirty'.
Same DVD-r fits only a minute as 'data' from your timeline, which probably is encoded in proRes = ~40GBs/h ......
forget size ........ think of hh:min:sec

  • How to bring footage from my DVD into FCP

    Hi,
I REALLY need some help! I edited my film in FCP and burned in DVDSP, the same goes for the raw footage. They are both now on a DVD. My problem is that I let my friend borrow the raw footage tapes (bad mistake I know!) and now he cannot find the tapes. So I want to know if it is possible to take the raw footage back off the DVD without loosing any quality, and to bring it back into FCP? Thanks SO much for the help!

Without losing ANY quality? Sorry, quality was lost when you encoded for DVD. More quality will be lost when you rip the footage off the DVD, and more lost again when you encode again for DVD.
Sorry bud. Gotta press your friend more.

  • When I try to burn my slideshow.mov to a dvd disc, it will burn but when i put it in the dvd player it says 'disc error'. I have burned it thru iDVD before but forgot how to do it and it won't do it now. The slide show is on my desktop

Rather than burn directly to disk follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How to convert a DVD disc for use in Final Cut Express 3.5

I have a DVD disc of a conference which I would like to edit in FCE 3.5.
I would like to be able to import it into my FCE project, ad use it without having to the render it in FCE.
Is it possible to rip or import the disc (with Handbrake?) and then export the resulting file so it can be used in FCE. I am especially keen that when the file is imported, it doesn't have to then be rendered. I have had a number of problems with QuickTime files being imported to FCE where they then need to be rendered in the timeline before I can use them.
If anyone can suggest the following I would be very appreciative:
1/ how to import the DVD disc- Handbrake?- what settings are best to use? MPEG4, H.264...
2/ once imported to my Mac Pro, how do I convert it for easy use in FCE.
Just to show you that I did try this before posting to this forum, I tried the following:
    1/ imported as a h.264 file with Handbrake (2hr video created a 2GB file)
2/ opened this file in an app called "MPEG Streamclip" and exported the file as a QuickTime file, and set as "Apple DV".
3/ BUT... the resulting file reached 17GB and then when imported to FCE, it couldn't be played in the timeline until I rendered it first- I didn't start this as it would have taken hours and hours!!
Any help or tips would be great
    Thanks,
    Simon

  • IDVD ejects dvd disc one minute early, before burning is completed. Why? What can I do to fix this?

iDVD ejects the dvd disc one minute early, before burning is completed. Why? What can I do to fix this? I have checked project via mapping and there are no problems with it. I have previewed the entire project and it runs fine.

    Good morning,
There could be a few reasons why the burn doesn't finish.  iDVD needs a lot of hard disk space to create the DVD -- 10-15 Gigs is starting to get low and under 5 G is virtually impossible.  Reduce the load on your Mac by quitting other applications while you're trying to burn.  Also, you may wish to break down your workflow into two steps (I do this routinely):
    1)  After you're satisfied in iDVD -- use the Save As Disc Image command rather than going directly to burn.  This creates a virtual DVD which you can mount and play on your Mac.
    2)  Second step creates the physical DVD from the disc image.  I use Roxio Toast to copy the disc image, but Apple's Disk Utility also works to burn the disc image.  Use good quality discs -- Verbatim is often recommended; I've been happy with Sony DVD-R as well.

  • Can hd dvd discs burn on a mac pro

I have Movies on a disc from a Sony Recorder and I would like to play it on my MacBook Pro, is that possible? The Disc circumference is much smaller than the average dvd disc.

Zyriab has taken care of the size limitations, to which I would add that irregularly shaped optical media like the business cards that have been the rage in some places are also not to be inserted in the SuperDrive to avoid their getting caught inside and damaging the unit and/or requiring a trip for service.
Regarding content, beware that the SuperDrive can only read or write regular CD and DVD media. Blu-Ray, HD-DVD and the like are unrecognizable to the drive and the operating system.
If you need to handle media different from "standard", I'd suggest an external drawer-type optical drive connected by USB or FireWire. I have an external LG Super Multi Blu-Ray drive on an OWC case that sports USB3/FW800/E-SATA interfaces and is capable of handling most any type of optical media known to man.

  • I've burnt a slideshow of my photos onto a DVD disc but it will not play on my DVD player. It plays ok on my acer laptop. I burnt the same disc with slideshow from my old dell computer

I've burnt a slideshow of my photos on my Apple Mac to a DVD+REW disc but it will not play on my DVD player or on a combined DVD/TV. However it will play on my wife's Acer laptop. I then erased the disc & burned another slideshow from my ancient Dell computer onto the same disc &it played just fine on everything. So it seems the problem ids somewhere in the Apple Mac process. Any ideas?

  • HP Pavilion g4, reinstall Win7 64bit fm a DVD disc, not work

I try to fix a problem for my friend's laptop. It is HP Pavilion G4
running Win 7 64bit OS. The laptop can not start up the windows. I
press ESC to pause the start up, and run system recovery, it shows BIOS
setup, system recovery and others, I then press Fn + 11 key to run
system recovery, but it never runs.
I then remove the HDD, and connect to my computer to run testing. It
seems it has something inside corrupted. It takes so long to recognize
all partitions. I decide to format all partitions and then resize
them. Afterwards, I run test and chkdsk. Everything is fine with the
HDD now. I put the HDD back to Laptop, and insert a DVD disc of Win
7, the laptop does not start from DVD. The screen shows as follows:

Please run the Hard Disk Test in System Diagnostics.
    Hard Disk 1 (3F1)
    F2 System Diagnostics
I visit the above link, I could not find relevant materials.
If I press ESC to exit start up. I can hear the DVD ROM is running,
but still not work. The screen shows as follows:
    Startup Menu
    F1 System Information
    F2 System Diagnostics
    F9 Boot Device Options
    F10 BIOS Setup
    F11 System Recovery
    Enter - Continue Start up
Only F1 would respond when I press. Other Fn does not respond at all.
Do you have clue and suggestion for me ?

You do not use Fn + the key indicated. For instance to enter BIOS you simply tap F10. Recovery would have been F11, not Fn + F11.

  • IDVD won't open with OS 10.5.8 -can't record on to blank DVD discs

When I attempt to open iDVD application, message says it won't open with this OS. Also when I insert a blank DVD (Verbatim) disc am unable to record a film on to it as I get this message: "The disc can't be burned because the device failed to calibrate the laser power for this level of media." I've seen this message on a previous post on this forum but could not see any solution posted. I have recorded onto DVD discs in the past (different make of disc and before I upgraded to Leopard).
I can record on to blank CD audio discs without any problem however.

The first thing to try (IMO important) is not to import directly from your camera. Get a Firewire-connected card reader (USB works also but is slow on Macs) and use the Mac's Finder to copy images from the card to a folder on the Mac hard drive. My description below describes a CF card, but the workflow is the same for an SD card or whatever.
I feel pretty strongly that camera-to-Aperture handling of original images puts originals at unnecessary risk. I suggest this workflow, first using the Finder (not Aperture) to copy images from CF card to computer hard drive:
    • Remove the CF card from the camera and insert it into a CF card reader. Faster readers and faster cards are preferable, and Firewire is much preferable to USB2.
    • Finder-copy images from CF to a labeled folder on the intended permanent Masters location hard drive.
    • Eject CF.
    • Burn DVD copies of the original images (optional backup step).
    • Eject DVDs (optional backup step).
    • From within Aperture, import images from the hard drive folder into Aperture selecting "Store files in their current location."
    • Review pix for completeness (e.g. a 500-pic shoot has 500 valid images showing).
    • Reformat CF in camera, and archive DVDs of originals off site.
Note that the "eject" steps above are important in order to avoid mistakenly working on removable media.
Good luck! The camera-to-Aperture workflow may or may not be the cause of your specific problem this time but in any event card-to-finder long term will provide a more solid workflow.
