1080p video playback disappears

When I try and play a 1080p video on my computer that I purchased through iTunes, it plays for a second or two, and then the screen turns black. The audio continues but there is no video. How can I correct this? I am running Windows 7 professional, Intel Core i5 @ 3.1 GHz, 8 GB RAM on a Dell P2212H monitor with native resolution os 1920x1080.

I would suspect third party video codecs (components) that may have gotten installed over the years.
A dual 2 GHz machine is also at the "low end G5" for supported playback on any 1080 format.

Any oddballs there?

  • Poor 1080p Video playback

I have a 2008 iMac with the upgraded 4GB Ram and 512Mb Nvidia video card - I recently received a GoPro Hero3 video camera that records in 1080p@60fps and higher resolutions.  Once I download them to the iMac into iPhoto or iMovie the playback is ridiculously slow and choppy.
I have also recently noticed issues with my Time Machine Backups and finding they take much longer then before.
This feels like an issue that I would get from my old Windows PC.  I have about 50% space left on my 500GB hard drive and I am not over using resources while attempting playback of the videos.
I have no issues playing them on a Dell laptop though?
Any thoughts on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you in advnace.

Based on numerous threads I have read, many others are experiencing poor video playback. Evidently it is a 10.8.2 bug because one individual posted that they got a beta version of 10.8.3 and the playback problem had been fixed.
Only guess I've read about the 10.8.3 release date is sometime in January.
File a bug report - it can't hurt:
    Feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Even though it may not do any good I would suggest you run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Repeat until it shows no repairs were made. Clearing the log in between runs can make the process less confusing. It would eliminate permissions as a possible problem.

  • What QT7 settings do I use to export a 1080p video for playback on iPhone4? I'm using the iPhone to playback 1080p video on 1080p monitor. Is this possible?

Does anyone know what settings I should use to export a 1080p video for playback on iPhone4? I'm hoping to use the iPhone4 to playback 1080p video on 1080p monitor. Is this possible?
I have previously saved my .mov file as Apple TV, but the quality is reduced from 1920x1080 to 960x540. I was unable to sync the higher quality file to my phone (and am worried this is the limitation of the hardware). I added this file to iTunes, added to a playlist, and sync'd to my iPhone. The playback works but the resolution is obviously a lower quality. Is it possible to keep the higher quality for playback through a 1920x1080 hd monitor?  Otherwise, would I be able to sync a 1920x1080 mov file to a new iPad or other device? Thanks in advance to your answers.

No. Only the iPhone 4S, iPad3, and TV3 currently support 1080p30 content. Even then the 1080p30 playback support for your monitor may depend on how the device is connected. The iPhone 4 is limited to 720p30 playback.

Not on your current device. As previously stated, the latest generation of iPhone, iPad, and TV devices support a maximum 1080p30 playback capability but may be limited to lower resdolutions depending on your method of connection to your monitor. This information can be found on the Apple web site TechSpecs page for each respective device.

  • What is the best Compressor setting for best quality video playback on an iBook g4?

I know the iBook and G4's in general are very outdated today, but I need to ask anyways. I have some video projects in 720p and 1080p in which I have down converted to 480p and also exported to MPEG-2 for DVD (personal wedding videos and videos made for my clients using Final Cut Studio). Anything encoded at most resolutions using h264 won't play on my iBook. Even 480p.
I have about 20 hours of mixed video content that I need it in a format that is suitable for an iPhone 4 and an iBook 12" with a 1.2GHz G4, 1.25GB RAM and I added a 250 WD 5400 IDE hard disk (running 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 for Classic Mode). I know the iBook doesn't seem like the best tool for modern video playback, but I need to figure out which setting will play best with iPhone 4 and iBook so I don't need to make 2 local copies of each video for each device.
The iBook plays best with the original DVD output MPEG-2 file and playing back in QT Pro or VLC... but I already have 180 GB's of MPEG-2 files now and my little HD is almost full. I don't have enough room to convert all the iPhone 4 counterparts. If I use Compressor 3.5.3, what is the optimal setting for iBook and iPhone .m4v or .mp4 files that can play on both devices? So far 720x400-480 widescreen videos @ 29fps works great on my iPhone, Apple TV 2, and other computers but seems to murder my poor iBook if encoded with high profile (and still choppy on simple profiles). 640x480 (adding black matte bars to my videos) plays fine in MPEG-2 but drops frames or goes to black screen if I convert it to mp4 (and looks bad on the iPhone 4 because of the matte). But if I convert on any of the simple profiles, it looks terrible on my iPhone 4 and a blocky on the iBook.
This is the problem leading me to having 2 copies of each video and eating my hard disk space. What is the best video setting for both playback on the iBook and iPhone 4? Can the iBook playback H264 at all in decent resolutionsat all? I don't really want to have a 480p .m4v collection for the iPhone 4 and a MPEG-2 RAW collection just to play the same videos on the iBook.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Update: The iBook can play any 480p video and higher if I encode them with DivX and in AVI format. But of course this is not compatible with my iPhone 4. At least I can shrink my library now and get away from the full MPEG-2s. I don't get why I can't use Apple's h264 though. There has to be a setting I am missing. The sample Apple h264 videos from the days of Tiger worked flawlessly on my iBook when it was new so the CPU must be capable of decoding it. I really can't understand this.
Also, since I made my videos in English for my family, I had to create soft subtitles for my wife's Chinese family, and I can't get players like QT with perian or MPlayerX to sync them properly to an AVI encoded with DivX, they only sync well with the iPhone 4 m4v/mp4 formatted files I made. This is a real pickle.
So now I may need three or four copies of each video, LOL. I need to hardcode the subtitles if I want to use AVI to playback on older machines, and keep the mp4 file for the iDevices too, while keeping higher quality h264 videos for my American relatives...
If h264 is compatible with my iBook, what is the proper encoding settings? Must I dramatically lower the settings or frame rate? I can settle on 2 copies of each video that way. One iBook/G4/eMac compatible video that syncs correctly with my srt soft subs, and another version that works well with my iPhone 4 and iPad.
All in all, I will end up with more than 3 or 4 version of each video. On my late G5 dual core I have the full 720-1080p uncompressed master files. On my i5 iMac I have the h264 compressed versions for distribution, and lower versions for my iDevices. Now I need to keep either full MPEG-2 files for the iBook to play, or convert to older formats like DivX AVI for our family's legacy machines. I am running out of hard disk space quick now, LOL.
    Is there an easier way?

  • Error message after upgrade to iTunes 11: "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."  At this point my PC running XP loses all audio.

Several attempts to upgrade to iTunes 11 have failed.  After an upgrade to 11 the error message reads: "iTunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/Video playback may not operate properly."  At this point--after the upgrade to iTunes 11--my PC running Windows XP loses audio playback for all functions--in iTunes, in the browser and the volume icon disappears from the System Tray.  Only by removing iTunes 11, and then using System Restore to turn back the OS settings can I return the PC to normal functioning.
I did that.  I reinstalled iTunes 10.5.  Everything seemed fine, but when I try to plug in and copy a CD to my iPhone 4S an error message reads roughly: 'iPhone 4S requires iTunes 10.5 or higher to work.'
What might be the problem with my audio configuration?
Why doesn't my iPhone 4S work with iTunes 10.5?  It used to work with iTunes 10.5.
    Please advise.

  • Video playback--mba 2010 w/mountain lion

Has anyone noticed terrible video playback on 13" 4Gb mba 2010 with the mountain lion upgrade? Youtube using flash (11.4.402.265) at 1080p is unwatchable and 720p is barely watchable at full screen. Connecting to a larger monitor is much worse. I could do all 3 when I had Lion. I'm not running any other applications at the time and used the app Free Memory to clear the RAM cache before playing a video. I've tried firefox, chrome, and safari (which I prefer), and they all had similarly poor results. I previously used html5 on lion, but those gave me choppy results and found flash to be better. Any suggestions?

I tried unchecking "enable hardware acceleration", but the results were similarly poor in safari 6 and chrome. However, while using safari 6 on youtube, I opted for the trial html5 setting and it now plays 1080p smoothly at full screen. Hopefully, this might helps others struggling with the mba 2010 processor.

  • Video playback so sluggish on eMac 1GHz G4

Just installed Mac OS X 10.5 clean to newly formatted drive. Has 768MB of RAM and enough hard drive space.
Getting to the desktop, it feels sluggish.
IE and webpages load slowly (that's relative , I guess).
But what is surprising is that video playback (eg, WMP or AVI file) is so choppy. Using either QT or VLC, all are so sluggish.
I take the same video files and run it on a PC laptop (abeit much faster 2GHz Core 2 Duo, etc... so not a fair comparison, I know).. and it is smooth, as expected.
What could be wrong? Is Mac OS X 10.5 too much for this old eMac?

You exceed the min CPU requirements for OS 10.5 Leopard.
It's RAM where you are sorely lacking.
Even though the min. RAM spec for 10.5 Leopard is 512 MBs of RAM.
768 is no where near enough.
If your eMac only has USB 1.0 ports, you can install a max of 1.0 GB of RAM.
If your eMac has USB 2.0 ports, you can install a max of 2 GBs of RAM.
IF your eMac is the newer USB 2.0 model just install the 2 GBS of RAM.
New iterations of OS X use more and more system resources and the more RAM, the better OS X runs.
Video streaming and playback is another issue.
Older PowerMacs can't handle the new modern video codecs that much newer Macs can handle more easily.
If the video is in 360 or 480p it should play and stream fairly fine with little to no issues.
YouTube, QuickTime, MP4s, AVI files encoded in 360 or 480p should stream with the right video software.
WMP files will be problematic on any Mac and maybe you'll need to hunt for a video player that works in OS 10.5 to be able to playback WMP files.
You maybe able to stream and or download/play 720p videos but these will be choppy and have a noticeable amount of frame drop. 1080p videos will not stream or play at all from direct on the eMac.

  • Red lines/glitched 1080p video streaming XBMC in Mavericks

    Hello,
This is so weird because I don't think this was happening the first weekend after installing Mavericks, but in the last few days, my XBMC is playing 1080p videos I'm streaming all messed up.  There are odd red lines and glitches in the video that do not go away.  720P seems to work fine, and even some 1080p works but I'd say 75%+ of all 1080p videos are doing this now.  I'm wondering if it has happened since me messing with Airplay as a 2nd display (not mirrored) to my Apple TV3 or the HDMI video output I've connected/disconnected several times.  Rebooting, reinstalling XBMC, you name it, nothing now is seeming to get rid of these playback issues.  Has anyone else ran into this? Hoping there is some sort of workaround as it is driving me nuts!
    Thanks.

Same problem here. Same results in full screen and windowed. Noticing that overlays are fine, looks like a video decoding issue.

  • Video playback fullscreen

While watching a video in full screen mode I press the pasue button and the whole movie window fades out and disappears. The normal functionality would be for the movie to pause. The movie then stops. No window or anything. The only way to start the movie back up is to go into itunes and restart the movie.

Don't know what's going on there...works here with two Cinema Displays.
I've got Apple FireWire NTSC (mirror on desktop-checked) in my A/V devices tab of Audio/Video Settings...(nothing selected in 'Different Output for Edit to Tape/Print to Video, because I'm not using that function in this workflow)
I can then just go to View/Video Playback/Fullscreen from the main menu and it goes right out to my second display.
Maybe has something to do with your Mac System Monitor preferences.?.?...not sure.

  • Terrible Video Playback in Photoshop CS6

I'm working on a computer that is more than fast enough to play 1080P video from DSLR. Specs are Intel Quad Core Q9550 @ 2.83Ghz, 6 Gigs of DDR2 800 RAM, Quadro 2000 GPU, and RAID 0 7200rpm scratch drives. Photoshop has 4 gigs of RAM dedicated to it and GPU acceleration is turned on. When I open up a video recorded from my Canon 60D that consists of 1080P video at 30fps, I can not get playback to be better than 17fps. It is terrible and I have no idea why this is happening. Last night I installed all available updates for CS6, updated to windows 8.1 and did a clean install on my GPU driver from nVidia for windows 8.1 64bit. STILL terrible playback. As soon as I add an adjustment layer to the video, it drops to 4fps. What is happening. I don't think these videos should be playing back this slowly. If I watch them in another stand alone player, the frame rate is perfect.

I don't think these videos should be playing back this slowly.
But then again, PS is not a video editing app like Premiere, is it not? Not to dismiss your point, but expecting things to be realtime in PS is a bit optimistic, even more so once you add effects and adjustments. It simply isn't meant for this. Actualyl processing video is different from just playing it back and whatever evil combination of circumstances prevents RT playback on your system is probably not something that can be fixed or at least not easily. As a start you might wanna run some system monitoring tool to detect potential bottlenecks and e.g. try different screen resolutions, turn off color management and so on - anything that may contribute to consuming processing resources, even if not in an obvious, conscious way. Also check the storage location of the video. While it may have enough I/O speed for buffered playback, it may not be sufficient for directly playing the footage in PS...

Are you running the 9.0.1 Update of the program and on what computer operating system is it running?
Is your video card/graphics card driver up to date according to the manufacturer of the card?
Is your computer optimized, including maintenance of pile ups of preview files, conformed audio files, and conformed video files?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1?
What are your project settings and what are the properties of your source media? When you say that "used to be able to export...." is that on the same computer, same brand/model/settings for the camera recording the video now in use, same Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1?
Where player are you using for the playback of these exports?
Please give us more details on the size of the projects (then and now) as well as details of the customized export settings in your Share/Computer/ route. Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 is only a 32 bit application running in 32 bit or 64 bit system. Not sure if computer resources might be taxed more so now than before.

  • Can't export to 1080p video in iMovie

I've imported a video taken with my iPhone 4s into iMovie 11.  I confirmed the video is actually 1080p.  In iMovie I then select Share -> Export Movie, the only size available is "Large 720 x 540" or smaller.  Since this was 1080p video to begin with, shouldn't I be able to export it as 1080p?
So, I searched and found a youtube video describing how to export 1080p video using QuickTime.  I followed the video step by step, but when I got the the part to select H.264 format, that format was unavailable.
What do I have to do to export 1080p video?
I don't recall this being a problem in the past.

    Hi
Im curious about this point. I recently imported some video from a 5S, the option on my mac said, import as large or original, when i checked orginal I got a warning saying it may lose quality on playback so I checked large. I want to keep the quality from the 5S so I can export to itunes and watch on my HD tv with apple TV, by checking large does that decrease quality or is it the correct default?
My macbook is non-retina so I am assuming the playback quality it refers to is on my mac. I have changed the default to original even with the playback warning - is this correct?

  • Quicktime 7.6 video playback issues

I upgraded to quicktime 7.6 yesterday and is has caused video playback issues when in higher performance with my Macbook pro. I am trying to play 1080p footage in the h.264 compression codec and it is now stuttering. It played fine in my previous quicktime player before the upgrade and it seems to play fine in the better battery setting. The problem occurs with the 9600 nvidia chip but the 9400 works okay. This is troublesome because the 9600 should out preform the 9400.

Update: The problem only happens with MacOS 10.5.6. Running the pre-installed MacOS 10.5.5 the 9400M and 9600M displays movies smoothly using QuickTime 7.6. Disabling hardware-accelerated playback by deleting the "AppleVAH264HW.component" in "/System/Library/Quicktime" also "solves" the problem.

  • No sound on any video playback after 5-10 seconds

The sound on my second generation ipad seems to disappear after 5-10 seconds of watching any video playback, although sound works when i stream to my apple TV so I'm assuming its the device that's problematic. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue and get sound from the ipad would be greatly appreciated.

Perform a "reset" on the device by pressing down and holding the home button and the sleep/wake button for up to 30secs. until you see a black screen with the Apple logo, then release.
Then test to see if it solved the problem.

  • Video playback issues -- no audio through interface

Recently, I've just noticed that some applications will playback through my Tascam US-1800 and others won't. Most of the apps I use it for (recording, Band in a Box, iTunes, etc.) have no trouble  But I've only recently noticed that apps such as VLC, the Leaping Brain video playback app for streaming content, and Youtube on Safari will only work using the internal speakers. I've seen a number of complaints about Safari's compatibility with Youtube (and none of the half dozen or so fixes I've tried have not worked, such as unchecking the 32 bit box in the Info box, or the HTML5 issue).
In the case of Leaping Brain (Purple Software) there is an option to use Quicktime instead as a workaround, and that works just fine throught the interface.
I thought flash might be an issue, but the tech at purple software says they don't use Flash. Their app supposedly uses whatever is the "default" device. That's only true if it's set for internal speakers, not true if set to us-1800.
I had this issue with Mozilla too, but Chrome works just fine--youtube and other audio comes through the interface loud and clear.
I did search posts for something similar, but there seem to be a LOT of similar, possibly related issues, but none suggesting why this would be happening. I should had that the drivers for the us-1800 are updated for Mountain Lion, and everything else is up to date as well.  So, if this is an issue raised and solved before, I apolgize, but I didn't see it.

Is the AVR set to 720P or 1080P for output?  Use the resolution button on the front of the receiver to adjust.
Depending on what it is set to, the ATV needs to be set to the same setting.
The ATV does not support 1080i, if the receiver is set to that, change it.
Might be as simple as changing the HDMI port the ATV is connected to on the receiver.
