1080p25 output on iMovie '13, 10.0.6

I have used several iMovie releases in the past year. Currently using iMovie'13.
I shoot in 1080i50. I know the new iMovie converts to 1080p25. If I "share" in high quality an MP 4 is made. Up until now I burned HD-DVD in Toast '11. The resulting BDMV file plays with quicktime and the resulting HD-DVD works fine. Now comes the problem:
I got a Blu Ray burner that I want to use. I share the movie in high quality, ergo a MP4 with 25fps (progressive). Making a Blu Ray disk image in Toast '11 results in a BDMV file that WON't play in Quick Time (Apple doesn't support BD), it will play in Roxio Player. Now I get worried, cause I do not want to end up burning multiple BD discs that will not work, :
1. If I burn the above mentioned, will it play in a Blu Ray player? I read somewhere toast does not support it, but I made the disk image, ergo?
2. if not, is there a way to export the imovie file as 1080i50, as it was shot originally
An answer would be extremely helpful

iMovie 10 should 'see' any iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders at the root of any connected drive or in users/<username>/Movies.  It looks like it does not recognise your alias to Movie HD/Users/<username>/Movies - is it a simlink or a normal alias?  I would expect a simlink to work but I've not tested this.  Any way, the simplest solution would be to copy or move them temporarily onto the root level of a drive where iMovie 10 will definitiely see them.
One bit of advice.  A lot of people have updated a lot of events and projects all at once then complained of the lack of organistion in the resulting iMovie 10 library.  You may find it better (as I did) if you hide most of your projects and events by temporarily moving them to a separate folder and just update one or two at a time, checking that everthing is OK before updating more.  iMovie 10 puts a blank file with a name something like "Updated to iMovie10" in both of the iMovie 9 folders.  This is a flag to prevent repeat updates and has to be removed if you want to unhide other projects and events and update them.  Each update will go in a new library but you can move things between libraries afterwards.
After upgrading you can still use iMovie 9

  • What are the specs of the audio output in iMovie?

Using  iMovie on iPad2, what are the audio specs for the final movie output options (HD1080p, HD720p, etc.)?  Does my 16/44 WAV or ALAC audio remain as, or is it converted?

I don't have the new iPad, so I can't say if it saves up to 1080P.
But I would assume when you save to the camera roll it will save it as 1080 video.
On the iPhone 4, and older iPad it saves a 720 video, but that is the source it gets.
But I can answer about the audio.
IMovie iOS will encode the audio and video in the same format the device records.
So it will save the video as H264, and embed audio as AAC.
    These are compressed formats.
You do lose some quality in the final output.
I find this is minimal, and well worth the loss for the ability to edit on the go.
    Hope that helps.

  • Poor quality video output from iMovie 08

I have tried to save or export videos on several occasions, their output quality is always very poor.
Recently, I needed to translate videos from MPG, MOV, AVI etc.. using various translation tools. I am not sure how much quality I lost during those translations (I wish iMovie would import something, anything!).
I have saved my projects and also tried exporting to the highest resolution in both cases. When playing back within PowerPoint or QuickTime (7pro or 10) the quality is so bad I almost can't recognize the people in the video.
Does iMovie 09 do a better job with output or am I just using the wrong tool?
    Thanks in advance.

not sure if i'm having the same issue or not, but i'm having problems with iMovie 08, and exporting my finished project, and having the frame rate be goood, or the resolution stay good, or both. I've tried m4v, avi, mpeg4 and they worked in quality in that order, but m4v still didn't have as good as resolution as the original file. Is there an option that automatically goes with original framerate, and resolution? What should I be doing for best visual quality in general?

  • DV output to IMovie 11

I have a Sony Camcorder that has a dv output .I cannot generate any thumbnails in IMovie 11 while using a fire wire from the camcorder to my computer .Can some one help identify my problem ? The apple website says it supports dv format ,but my IMovie freezes when generating Thumbnails

Thanks for the help Tom . According to Sony this camcorder records an MPEG-1 format. which, according to Apples website, seems to be compatible with IMovie 11

  • Capture Xbox 360 component output to iMovie?

I would like to be able to capture output from component devices such as my Xbox 360 in the best possible quality on my Mac. Is this possible? What sort of hardware would I need (and how much does it cost)?
Anyone know what companies like Gamespot or IGN use for their "direct feeds"? I won't assume they use Macs, but the hardware they use might be Mac-compatible.

Hi, I am currently in the process of doing that exact same thing. However, I have some disappointing news.
It is possible to record gameplay from a 360, however it will be recorded straight into a Muxed MPEG2 file. Also you will be required to purchase two pieces of electronic equipment.
The first is Elgato EyeTv 250, which comes with EyeTV 2 software (200$ with the software included). The second piece you will need is a composite video splitter, I have the CELab AV400, which costs around 60-70 dollars but works great. Make sure that whatever video splitter you use has a true 1:1 ratio with no signal loss.
Now, plug your Xbox 360, or whatever device you are using into your splitter, and then run A/V cables to your TV and to the EyeTV 250 reciever. You can plug your 360 straight into the EyeTV but due to the time it takes to compress the streaming video into MPEG format, their is a noticable delay in the image, making real time play impossible, thus the need for the splitter.
Finally, once you have recorded your gameplay, you have to convert the Muxed MPEG2 into a .dv file. Strictly because iMovie will not recognize Muxed MPEG2 or any MPEG for that matter. Also, downloading the plug-in for Quicktime that allows it to play MPEG files WILL NOT make iMovie recognize these types of files. I personally use DropDV, but the unregistered version will place large watermarks on the video feed, the registered version costs $40.
If you need me to make a more detailed description just let me know.
    Hope I provided some help.

  • Great output from iMovie with still photos

I have made a great movie using just stills in iMovie.

    Just tried to be witty.
One starts to associate in a predictable way - some times. As my fellow student.
    Have no AppleTV
    Have no broad-band internet - still 50kb modem V.92
So my interest is howto get as good result possibly to share - and DVD or BD-DVDs
are the only solution I've got via iM'08 or 09 or 11
Else (iM6/FC) - I copy back To Camera or if small save out as QT on DVD or BD-DVD.
Wish I could figure out a way to get all funny things in iM'11 and over in HD resolution
    on just anything.
    - Will try if I can get it out on USB-memory - one way or another.

  • Sony AVCHD + Voltaic HD = Best Output For iMovie?

After running into dead ends the past few months, trying to import HD video from my Sony HDR-SR5, I purchased Votaic HD. What is my best conversion type to maintain the best quality audio/video to edit in iMovie?

On Apple's iMovie '09 Camcorder Support page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290#2) it is rather odd that they list the Sony DCR-SR5 in amongst the HDR models. I'm wondering if that is a misprint. A Google search on DCR-SR5 comes up with many references to HDR-SR5, but nothing of significance on the DCR-SR5 - does it actually exist?
So, I'm thinking your model is actually supported. I have the Sony HDR-SR7 which works fine. But be aware that you must erase any SD (MPEG-2) content from the camera before iMovie '09 will recognise the HD (AVCHD) content. See this Apple article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793

  • IDVD can't find files output from iMovie

In order to improve the quality of the final DVD, I exported using Quicktime with DVPro50 codec which renders a full DV stream. However, iDVD only finds some of the renders, even though they are all in Movies or Documents and I have added them to the Always Scan group. How can I get iDVD to see all the renders in the folder, not just some?

Interestingly, I have a very similar problem. I have a folder with 5 video files, and iDVD only sees 3 of the files. They are all encoded as quicktime, with the animation codec, at highest quality (i.e., losless format).
What is it that iDVD uses to determine whether videos can be imported or not?

  • Video output settings same as iMovie?

    Hi Everyone,
I've made my first real FCE movie - but when I output it using File, Export, Using Quicktime conversion, Size = PAL 720x576 16:9, I get a file size about 10 times bigger than the equivalent file I'd get from iMovie.
It looks great - just a very big file. (1Gb for 8min of video?) can someone suggest what settings to use to get the file size (and quality presumably) equivalent to iMovie's standard output?
    Many thanks
    Andy

    Bonjour!
I have to convert, because my camera captures anamorphic video, if I output normally I get a distorted result.
I was pretty happy with the quality output from iMovie, typically giving me 100Mb for about 5 minutes of video or 1.2Gb / hr, but if the standard is 12Gb/ hr, I guess I'll just have to get a bigger scratch disk!
    Thanks for your advice
    Andy

  • IMovie Quicktime Output Whitewashed on PC

I'm seeing something strange when I output my iMovie HD output to Quicktime. It works just fine on the Quicktime 7 player on my MacBook Pro. But the Quicktime Player on a Dell PC (Windows XP) is displaying the .mov file nearly completely whited out. Is there a trick to this? I know the Quicktime Player on the PC works fine in most circumstances, but I had to output the movie to AVI (yuk) so I could get the movies to my target audience.

    Sue,
An interesting article, but since it applies to QT playback on Macs, it probably doesn't diretly apply to viewing his clip on a PC.
However the QT CODEC used and color profile used probably ARE where his problem lies.
    hajush,
What QuickTime encoding did you use? If yoy can't remember, open the clip in the QuickTime Player on a Mac and select Window>Show Movie Info

  • Newbie seeks advice on importing to iMovie from JVC Everio

    Hi there,
While I'm an old hand at the Mac - I really have little experience of AV applications and cams. I am very interested in buying a JVC Everio GZ-MC 500 or MC 200 Digital Media Camera, but just found out that I cannot import movie outputs into iMovie. Since MicroDrive technology seems like the way of the future I'd like to stick to the JVC. Is there any work around to this problem?
I have iLife 05 with iMovie HD installed and have just downloaded QT7 with Pro upgrade on the way. Does the MPEG 2 component solve this situation?
Any assistance to this would be a great help.
    Thanks and regards,
    Des

My experience with microdrives (..incidentally, Clive Sinclair used the name 'Microdrive' for the tape storage devices he sold for his original 1980s home computers ..about 20 feet of videotape wound into an endless loop in a teeny plastic housing, rather like a miniature 8-track cartridge ..they were also used in the ancient British ICL 'One-Per-Desk' under licence from Sinclair: those two slots along the top are microdrive slots.. Oops ..sorry; where was I..?) ..is that they're unreliable. CF cards are better. But how much video can you store on a CF card, and at what price?
Microdrives need a moment to run up to speed, and constantly starting and stopping them - as I've done with, for instance, a Sony F828 stills camera - I find that the drive gets confused about whether it should be saving or accessing ..and just stops working. Same thing has happened to me with a microdrive in various other devices. So I don't trust them any more. I've used various sizes (340Mb, 1Gb, 2.2Gb) and I always cross my fingers: some have stopped working completely; others have had to be reformatted as DOS, and then formatted as Mac HFS+ ..and I've found them to be more trouble than they promise to be worth. Imagine suddenly losing all your video after you'd just shot about 46 minutes' worth.. Weddings? Argghh! The bride and groom would be so disappointed ..and so would you!
There are various programs which will read MPEG-2 footage (..including the audio: iMovie will play the video 'natively', but often without the sound..) such as Streamclip. That'll convert MPEG footage into proper QuickTime, which iMovie can handle. So you could connect your microdrive(s) to your Mac, copy the footage, squirt it through Streamclip, then edit it.
However, be aware that the quality of the footage may not be as high as material recorded with proper miniDV (or Digital-8) tapes because of the nature of the Everio's recording/compressing/storing routine. The specification - on that page mentioned by 'L', above - shows that the Everios record in the same format as DV "NTSC (720x480) 4:2:0 PAL (720x576) 4:2:0" but - not having tried one - I dunno if the final appearance ..once the video's been 'unscrambled' from MPEG-2 format into something iMovie compatible, then saved back to tape or hard disc.. is as good as DV. It might be even better [..HDV hi-def is saved as MPEG-2..] but I couldn't say.
But DO be careful about microdrives ..ask a few Everio owners before putting down your money and buying one. And how does the price of a microdrive compare with a 60 minute miniDV tape?
Oh, by the way, I almost forgot: welcome to iMovie Discussions!

  • Having trouble with Aperture images in a slideshow in iMovie

I've searched for answers to this but can't seem to find out what I'm doing wrong....
I'm trying to put together a slideshow in iMovie with my images from Aperture. They look horrible, color is way off and they're grainy. It was my understanding that iMovie uses the preview images from Aperture for making the movie so I have my settings in Aperture set to the best quality for previews. Is that right? Is there something else I should be doing?
    Thanks for any help.

No, thats the right way I do it with my images. I use iMovie 09 and the preview size of my iLife previews are set to 1680 pixel. I do mostly some slideshows in iMovie for displaying on the web and for iPhone, so the output from iMovie will be most times at 480 pixel wide. The colors are fine and images look best as in Aperture.
What I found sometimes is, some outwashed colors - unsaturated - after I export my movie from iMovie. This comes when I use other settings for exporting the movie than the presets for iPhone or Apple TV. The same behavoir did I recognize when exporting a movie from Final Cut Express or Keynote. This behavoir may be outdated in Snow Leopard, because Quicktime X should use Colormanagement the first time.

  • HD quality iMovie vs. Final Cut Express (AIC)

    Hello,
I was finally able to carry out a simple test to compare output from iMovie '09 vs. Final Cut Express (FCE), which has proven to produce much cleaner output when compared with iMovie '08. Just as I have received help from online mac community I feel obliged to share my experiences with you in case it's of interest to you and helps you.
    * Footage: filmed on Canon 5D Mark II (1080p, bitrate >40Mbps
    * Imported into iMovie '09, no stabilization and other tricks, exported to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC) with as little quality loss as possible
    * Imported into FCE, exported to AIC
Resulting file from FCE is sharper and cleaner when compared side by side in QuickTime. Not surprisingly the same AIC export has different sizes, too.
    * FCE: 477 MB for 32 seconds of footage
    * iMovie: 253 MB for the same 32 seconds of identical footage
Hope this helps someone. Happy filming!
    Roman

It's been long discussed, but your conclusion is not fully correct:
    1) If you import at FULL, no pixels are lost by iM. Thus, his Canon footage could have come in perfectly.
    2) "One field is DISCARDED with 1080i." Not true. IF AND ONLY IF you use a function or FX that performs scaling, ALL video is chopped to 540p.
    3) The functions that do NOT cause conversion of ALL video to 540p include SPEED, DISSOLVE, and FADE. If you use only these FX, then EVERY pixel that is recorded by your camera CAN BE exported by iM 09.
    4) If you use no FX, then EVERY pixel that is recorded by your camera CAN BE exported by iM 09.
    5) To export ALL pixels, you of course, must choose the correct settings in the QT dialog. They would be the same as you use with FCE or FCP.
The fact he got different sized files shows HE did something to cause the difference. Had he done things "correctly," he would have the same size file.
PS1: Page Curl is a perfect example of a scaling FX. So, by violating the #1 rule of using iM 09 you get support for your incorrect conclusion. Folks shooting with a camera like the Canon do so mostly to get a high-end film look. Very few folks making a film use anything other than SPEED, DISSOLVE, and FADE. In fact, no one making a high-end video would use anything other than SPEED, DISSOLVE, and FADE. So, it is perfectly possible to NOT use any of the "bad" FX. (Although they can be fun I admit!)
PS2: Be aware the black Background IS one of the bad FX. Unless, this bug was fixed in the last update. A static background should not need to use scaling! If this bug remains, use a black JPEG! I keep a black and white matte in iPhoto to use with "Fade TO" FX.

  • Importing MPEG-2 With iMovie - JVC Everio

    I have two problems.
    1. I cannot watch or edit my camcorder videos, which are mpeg-2 files with a .MOD attached to the end of the file. How do I watch these successfully? Should I download the codec for Quicktime despite the horrible reviews?
    2. How do I edit them with imovie without losing alot of quality? I've found converters but when I convert to a mp4, I lose a lot of the quality. Help!

I have been converting them to the highest quality that my program, VisualHub, will let me, which includes the H.264, but I am still noticing a very significant reduction in quality.
I assume here that you are referring to a difference in quality between the original MPEG2 video and the intermediate H.264 file and not between your original file and any final output from iMovie '08. (I.e. you are referring to the output from Visual Hub?) If so, then what are the specs for the file so I have some idea as to what I would normally expect in the way of quality?
I decide to do a quick test on this end also and post the results so you could see what I consider "expected quality" levels for the settings I proposed. Basically, I demuxed a VOB source file to elementary M2V and AIFF files and combined these streams of data with an AIC/AIFF conversion of the original VOB and placed them in an MOV file container with the AIC video display offset so the two video tracks can be compared side-by-side either during playback or by manually stepping through the individual frames. Frankly, I don't really see any difference between the two. Unfortunately, I forgot that you don't have QT MPEG2 component to view the results and this "combination format" file can't be viewed by players like VLC (no valid FourCC), MPEG Streamclip (only displays the MPEG half), etc.
However, since I went to the trouble of crating and uploading the comparison, I will go ahead ahead an post the URL which can be played directly in the QT Player by those having the appropriate codecs. Just be advise that there is no "Quick Start" for this file and it takes several minutes to download into the player even with a high-speed internet connection.
    http://homepage.mac.com/jrwalker4/.Public/MPEGAICComp.mov
    Should I use another program?
My personal preference would be MPEG Streamclip, but there are others who are very satisfied with Visual Hub. So it is really up to you.
Will paying for the Quicktime MPEG-2 codec help?
I consider it an essential tool for working with both MPEG Streamclip and QT Pro but if you don't use either, then I see no need to buy it.
How about upgrading to Quicktime Pro?
There are many things you can do with QT Pro that simply cannot be done or cannot be done as easily in other applications. It will not help you to convert "muxed" MPEG2 files and preserve the audio but does support M2V files with supported audio. Since I don't know what you routinely do, it is difficult to advise you here. For me QT Pro and the QT MPEG2 component are required on almost a daily basis.

  • Imovie 09 upgrade, now filmstrip is all gray, won't load events

After upgrading from imovie 08 to 09, the filmstrip in the top box is all grayed out except for when I move the cursor over it, then it just shows the video for that particular 5 second block. The rest remains gray. And when I try to load the events in the bottom box, I get the spinning rainbow that does nothing. I have already put the library receipts in the trash, put imovie 09 in the trash too and reinstalled imovie 09, but it didn't fix it. Still all gray. I basically can't view the the filmstrip I was working on, and I can't load any clips into the bottom window from which to choose from.
I need some major help. Even thinking about going back to imovie 08 and iphoto 08, but I want to make sure that I can revert my iphoto library.

Here's what I suggest to try to correct this.
    1. Quit iMovie.
    2. In each iMovie Event folder you have, delete three folders:
    iMovie Cache
    iMovie Movie Cache
    iMovie Thumbnails
    3. Relaunch iMovie and wait while these folders are rebuilt.
    Does it work now?
If not, look in the Console and see if you are getting any output from iMovie.
    Good luck.
