10g instance not shutdown when XP shutdown

I have oracle 10.2.0.4 installed on XP Pro SP2. I have set up and confirmed that the registry entries for ORA_SHUTDOWN and ORA_INSTANCE_SHUTDOWN are set to true.  The timeout is at the default of 90.
If I go to the control panel and stop the service, the instance shuts down cleanly, as indicated by the entries in alert_instance.log.
When I shutdown(restart) the operating system, the os does not wait even 90 seconds, and the database is not shut down cleanly. There are no shutdown entries in the alert log, and there are crash recovery entries when it starts back up.
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone have a solution or suggestions of other things to set or check?
Thanks,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Just a guess but it could be something to do to with the privileges assigned to the windows user you are logging in as.
Is that user a member of the following groups? :
On MS Windows NT/2000/2003/XP:
On MS Windows the OSOPER and OSDBA groups are hard coded groups thus:
Group Name Oracle uses this as...
~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ORA_OPER OSOPER group for all instances
ORA_DBA OSDBA group for all instances
or
ORA_sid_OPER OSOPER group for a specific Oracle SID
ORA_sid_DBA OSDBA group for a specific Oracle SID
When you issue a 'CONNECT / AS SYSDBA' , Oracle checks if your MS Windows logon is a
member of the 'ORA_sid_DBA' or 'ORA_DBA' group.
On MS Windows NT/2000/2003/XP:
On MS Windows the OSOPER and OSDBA groups are hard coded groups thus:
Group Name Oracle uses this as...
  • The Cluster not failover when i shutdown one managed server?
    Hello, I created one cluster whit two managed servers, and deployed an application across the cluster, but the weblogic server gave me two url and two different port for access to this application.
    http://server1:7003/App_name
    http://server1:7005/App_name
    When I shutdown immediate one managed server i lost the connection whit the application from this managed server, My question is, the failover and de load balancer not work, why??
    Why two diferent address?
    thank any help
    Well you have two different addresses (URL) because those are two physical managed servers. By creating a cluster you are not automatically going to have a virtual address (URL) that will load balance requests for that application between those two managed servers.
    If you want one URL to access this application, you will have to have some kind of web server in front of your WebLogic. You can install and configure Oracle HTTP Server to route requests to WebLogic cluster. Refer this:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12839_01/web.1111/e10144/intro_ohs.htm#i1008837
    And this for details on how to configure mod_wl_ohs to route requests from OHS to WLS:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12839_01/web.1111/e10144/under_mods.htm#BABGCGHJ
    Please Some Tips!
    Best Regards,
    Erick ILarraza
    Hi Deepak,
    Thanks  a lot for your reply, in this case the problem was with the Dialog Instance (Only SAP apps, not Oracle).
    We shutdown the instance with the Microsoft SAP Management Console (right  button -> Stop).
    In general to shutdown the SAP System we first:
    1. Shutdown The Dialog Instance. (SAP Management Console)
    2. Shutdown The Central Instance. (SAP Management Console)
    3. Shutdown Oracle (BR*Tools).
    4. Stop SAP and Oracle Services.
    Maybe is more a problem of Windows Memory Management.....
    Best Regards,
    Erick ILarraza
  • Windows service does not stop when DB is shutdown from SQL*Plus
    I have a 11g XE DB in a Windows 7 machine.
    The installation has created a Windows service called OracleServiceXE. It's status is STARTED.
    I then login to SQLPLUS as sysdba and do a shutdown immediate;
    SQL> shutdown immediate
    Database closed.
    Database dismounted.
    ORACLE instance shut down.
    Problem is, when I refresh the services, the OracleServiceXE is still showing as STARTED.
    If I use the listener control to stop the listener the Windows service OracleXETNSListener changes status to BLANK.
    Why is this?
    tvCa-Oracle wrote:
    That service is a prerequisite Windows service to be able to start the database, but it is not the status of the database itself.
    When you do start the database, he may or may not start the service automatically (not sure there), but it is a needed service, for each database SID, on Windows.
    If you want to know what it is, open Task Manager or Process Explorer, only start the service (not the database), and see which OS process is launched.
    AFAIK, this is only on Windows, there's no comparable component on Linux/Unix for this.
    The Windows service OracleServiceXE has c:\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\bin\ORACLE.EXE XE as the Parth to executable.
    If I click on the Services tab in Task manager, then right-click the OracleServiceXE and click Go to process, it show the oracle.exe in the processes tab.
    If stop it, the service, from the Windows service control, the oracle.exe disappears and we cannot login to the DB.
    If we start the service from the windows service control, the oradim.exe appears, then a second later the oracle.exe appears. Once the DB status of the Windows service is STARTED, the oradim.exe disappears.
    So, I can start and stop the oracle DB with the Windows service. But If I stop the DB from sql*plus the the service is not stopped....
  • Computer restarts (does not shutdown) when iPod is connected
    This issue has probably been covered in these forums,
    but I didn't read anything about this.
    My Computer (G4 on Tiger) restarts (does not shutdown) when my iPod Classic 30GB is connected
    via USB. Is that normal? Everytime I shutdown my computer and I forget to disconnect my iPod
    it restarts. The problem is that my G4 is connected to my sound system and I hear the loud opening BONG sound when the OS boots up. Very annoying, and dangerous for my speaker system...
    I know there are third party utilities that enables users to kill that start up sound but if I repair permissions, clean PRAM, etc those settings are removed and the original Apple factory settings come back. Is there any way to kill that sounds PERMANENTLY! with Mac OS Tiger.
    Thanks
    Hmm... You might want to consider posting this in the OS X forum as well. I know with my MacBook (running Leopard), if I mute the system volume prior to shutting down the computer, the next time I boot up, I don't hear the startup chime.
    It's not normal for your computer to restart itself coinciding with iPod actions. Do you have any other software applications installed that interact with the iPod that might be causing this?
    When i shutdown i get below err
    ORA-01109: database not open
    Database dismounted.
    ORACLE instance shut down.
    Please tell i am not sure what to do as everthing seems to be fine
    ORA-01109: database not open
    is not a error, but warning.
    There are no problem, if there were only this message.
    ORA-01571: redo version 9.2.0.0.0 incompatible with ORACLE version 8.1.0.0.0
    This is problem.
    What did you do? Did you upgrade the database?
    You might fix it by making 'compatible' initial parameters sure.
    Which do you use pfile and spfile?
    Can you post follwing results?
    sqlplus /nolog
    SQL> connect sys/password as sysdba
    SQL> startup nomount
    SQL> show parameters pfile
    (1) If you get NO VALUE, you use pfile. (I think your database is this case).
    -->> shutdown, make backup (all datafiles,control files,logfiles, pfile),
    edit your pfile as follows, and then try to startup
    compatible=9.2.0.0.0
    (2) If you get some VALUE, you use spfile.
    -->> shutdown, make backup (all datafiles,control files,logfiles, spfile).
    sqlplus /nolog
    SQL> connect sys/password as sysdba
    SQL> startup nomount
    SQL> alter system set compatible=9.2.0.0.0 scope=spfile;
    SQL> shutdown
    SQL> startup
    Or...
    Cause: This software version cannot read the current redo logs, and either crash recovery is required or there are offline database files that need media recovery. If a file name is listed then it needs media recovery.
    Action: Shut down and restart using the compatible software. Do any required media recovery, and open the database. Shut down and restart using the current software. If the file is going to be dropped then take it offline with the DROP option to skip this check.
    macbook froze while online. hard shutdown. when it restarted, an error message appeared saying finder shut down unexpectedly containing a message box with a long list of technical jibberish.  after clicking OK that it would send an error report to Apple, the same error message box appeared again and again every time OK was clicked.  Now the macbook will not turn on at all
    If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
    If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
    Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
    Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
    During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
  • Kernel module not properly unloaded at shutdown
    Hello everyone,
    I guess I have found the solution to my problem described in the following topic: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1215504. It's about my headphone output not working when booting from Arch to Windows 7.
    When I unload the module manually with:
    modprobe -r snd_hda_intel
    Sound with Windows 7 works perfectly (without removing the battery from my laptop!).
    Now I would like to know, how to properly unload this module before powering off the machine?
    graysky wrote:Never heard of that since rebooting should clear hardware states, no?  In any case, why not run an `rmmod snd_hda_intel` via systemd on shutdown?
    Yeah, seems like if you require a hack/workaround for this, it would be easy enough to set up.  You could use a systemd.service for this, but I would probably go the even easier route and just drop a one line script in /usr/lib/systemd/system-shutdown.
  • Can not logout, restart or shutdown
    I have a Mac running 10.5.8. I have seen this on different models as well.
    The user can not logout, restart or shutdown. When those commands are selected in the GUI nothing happens.
    In the past the only way I could fix it was to create a new profile. There must be an easier way. does anyone know which files I should delete instead of having to create a new profile?
    Richard Saunders wrote:
    I'd launch the Console utility and look for messages that might explain the cause of the problem. You might find that it's due to a process that refuses to quit.
  • Firefox on Win 7 64 won't shutdown when closed. how do I fix this?
    On Win 7 64 bit Home Premium version my Firefox won't shutdown when I close it. This started since the upgrade to version 29. It is very annoying to have to go to the task manager and stop the process in there every time I exit Firefox. How to I correct this? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but that does not solve the problem.
    From what I have been reading from other posts on this forum, the issue may
    be caused by the clear history settings.
    Press the '''<Alt>''' or '''<F10>''' key to bring up the tool bar.
    Then '''Tools > Options > Privacy'''.
    The button next to '''History''', select '''Use Custom Settings'''.
    At the bottom of the page, turn on '''Clear History When Firefox Closes.'''
    At the far right, press the '''Settings''' button. Turn on ONLY '''Cache''' and
    '''Form And Search History''' leaving the others off.
    This is not a cure but will make it easier if Firefox locks up.
  • If the database is shutdown when the applcation is running what is happened
    I am using coneection pool to connect database. If the database is shutdown when the applcation is running what is happened? and how the database will be reconnected.
    I am using MySQL 3.23.52, Tomcat 4.1.12
    Hi,
    Performance of any n-tier system which takes the advantage of connection pooling will be much higher compared to its non-pooled counterpart.
    You have to be very careful while designing/using a connection pool.if u are using pool obtained from a third party,ur control on this pool will be limited - with a few set/get methods.
    A well designed pool wont create much trouble. if u are creating your own pool, basic steps required are
    1.create 'n' number of connections
    2.whenever user requests for a connection, check the validity of the connection- by sendin a simple select query etc- and if its not stale,give this connection to the caller.
    3.if the connection is stale ie it fails the pretest, close all the connections and create the pool afresh.
    4.connections obtained from the pool will be automatically returned back to the pool whenever the applciation call conn.close().
    from ur application, follow the steps for each connection you use (not necessary for a well designed pool)
    1.call ds.getconnection()
    2.check validity of this connection by sending a simple select query.if it works,everything is fine. otherwise something is wrong with connection(not always).
    3.sql exception may occur during the execution of sql query. this can be due to either
    a.database shut down (network related)
    b.database specific - like wrong query,invalid objects etc
    you have to look at the sql state/vendor code (which can be retrieved from the caught exception). the retrieved code will give you a hint why the error (network or database specific).and you can act accordingly.
    Most of the app servers comes with builtin connection pooling module. and handling stale connection is not a difficult task for the programmer. eg: if you are designing applcations for IBM websphere, you can use StaleConnectionException in your code.if this exception is caught,the whole pool is destroyed and created afresh.
  • Auto-Shutdown when ATV3 Sleeps?
    Hey Guys,
    Hopefully I've got the right place.
    I'm wanting to know if there is a way I can set my computer to auto-shutdown when the apple TV3 is put to sleep?
    Running Windows XP
    I can set a task to schedule a shut-down at a specific time, but this wont always be the best option as partner can stay up lat and watch it.
    Guess I'm just wondering if there's some advanced script or anything that will pick-up on itunes when its in sleep mode, and then set computer for shutdown?
    And maybe just another thing to note, the drop down box below for product doesn't even have ATV3 listed haha
    Tks
    Steve
    >I'm talking about a setting on my computer to shut itelsef down
    All computers can already be set to do that.
    >Setting the computer to shutdown on idle is an on-going argument I guess as well
    Argument about what?  This is a standard feature on any computer and has been for over a decade.  If you would like to take adavanage of it then set it to do that.
    >Is streaming considered the computer being in idle mode?
    No, the computer is actively running to server content and is receiving constant WAKE_ON_LAN requests.
    >Becuase it's just sitting there not doing anything
    Not true.  It is serving the content which is a VERY active process.
  • HT201250 How do you stop a Macbookpro with OSX 10.7.5 from turning off or logging off before timemachine is finished with the backup even though I have changed settings for energy management to "never" shutdown when plugged in to an outlet?
    My problem is my Macbookpro mid 2010 with OSX 10.7.5 seems to turn off or logs off before timemachine is finished with the backup even though I have changed settings for energy management to "never" shutdown when plugged in to an outlet?
    I had this problem on an IMac and I finally found a solution in an unlikely place. The problem was a security setting. I don't remember right this moment the exact setting and I am not on that machine right now but when I am I will try to retrace my steps to the fix. In the meantime check your security settings and any browser or browser extensions for computer log off settings. These settings are intended to prevent unauthorized use and incidentally screw up your backups. Hope this helps.
