10g Personal edition and DHCP

When installing the 10gR2 Personal edition of Oracle onto a machine with DHCP, does the need for a loopback adapter to fake a static IP address still apply ?
I can understand the need for a fixed IP address when installing the server edition (standard or enterprise), but does that also apply to personal edition ?
Given that the purpose of personal edition is to be installed on workstations, which will almost certainly use DHCP, this would mean everyone wanting to use personal would also need to setup a loopback adapter. Is this so, or does the need for a fixed IP address not apply to personal edition, as it is a single user edition that no one else can connect to ?
Thanks,
Andy Mackie

Bottom line is yes.... at least in my experience.
I've installed 10G(r1), 10GXpress, and 10Gr2 on a corporate laptop (tiny tablet PC actually) to try to get away from the MS Loopback adapter issue without any success.
I've found with each one I had to install or configure some loopback adapter and modify the configuration files to use it or I would simply run into the same problems with the IP address at bootup.
The problem seems to lie in the point of installation with the computer being connected to any network and looking for its own static IP address. This problem is a pain when you want the computer to either be mobile or use a DHCP hosted IP.
I have tested an proven the solution on over 150 deployed 10G family databases on a deployed farm of mobile computers, if you need any pointers....

  • 10g Personal Ed and Standard Ed. Differences?

    Hi Guys,
Could anyone tell me what is the difference between the Personal Edition and the Standard Edition Windows Install. According to the product family guide, it just says its good for development work on the desktop, but i am not sure what that entails. Does the Personal Edition Lack somes features compared to the Standard Edition. Does it just use less memory, and lots of services are not started by default?

  • Oracle Personal Edition and SQL dev. tool

I installed Oracle 10g Personal Edition on my laptop and want to use SQL Creator (SQL developer's tool/program - http://www.snefru.com/index.jsp) with it.
I'm trying to setup my SQL developers tool to connect to my local Oracle database and there is a connection wizard for the SQL program which prompts me:
    1.) "Select a JDBC driver..."
2.) "Enter Host name for the server that the database is located on...."
3.) "Enter Port number that the database is listening on...."
4.) "Unique SID of the database instance..."
How can I find out 1.) - 4.) for my specific, local database?
    Thanks in advance...

When you run SQL*Plus, what is the version number displayed:
    C:\>sqlplus
    SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.3.0 - Production on Tue Nov 22 17:11:44 2005
Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.  All rights reserved.
    Enter user-name:?
You woudl download the driver that matches with that release.
if you did the database install, chances are you already have the jdbc driver installed.
    Do you have a directry ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib ?
Do you have files like classes*.jar in that directory?
if you do you already have the jdbc driver files.

  • Installing Oracle 10g personal edition

    Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle 10g personal edition on ubuntu. After installing I ran the following command: /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure and by mistake gave a port number for HTTP port on which already another server is running. But now I am unable to change my configuration settings.
Everytime I give the command /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure it says "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition is already configured"
How can I change the configuration setting now? Do I need to reinstall it? Would be a great help, if somebody can tell me.
    Thanks,

  • Oracle 10g Personal edition as a Client Database

Hi, Our enterprise application runs as in both Online and offline mode. For offline mode it uses Microsoft accesss as Data Store. Now we want to use Oracle 10g Personal Edition as Our client database, so that we can use stored procedure and have code base for both server and client. Oracle XE can not be used because Oracle XE is not supported by Oracle.
Please suggest what is the best way to deploy Oracle PE to get smallest footprint and best performance. It is alright to use PE as client DB or it is too much for offline application.
Any suggested customizations or Alternatives. We have rules out Oracle Database lite because it doesn't support Pl/ SQL SP. Thanks.

Note that Personal Edition is actually designed for Developers. It includes all options to the Enterprise Edition (except RAC) but is limited by license agreement to being used by one named person. You can not legally provide data from Personal Edition through direct connection electronically (eg: a web or app server) to several people. You also can not say "John is using it now, and when he is off, Fred will use it."
The best and smallest footprinit is XE, but (as you say) you can not purchasse support from Oracle. Next is Standard Edition 1, with a Standard Edition software install (SE and SE1 are the same s/w) and a custom-created DB.

  • 10g Personal Edition Question

I am newbie and have a question regarding 10g personal edition. I see that this version supports one user connection but I am trying to find out if the user connection can be remote (from another workstation) or if it has to be local.
I have (2) XP boxes and want to install 10g personal edition on one XP box then access the DB from the other XP box. Can this be done?
Thanks in advance for any input!

Like the original poster, I too am a total Oracle newbie, considering migrating to Oracle from the outstandling but comparatively feature-poor PostgreSQL, and I'm trying the downloadable version of the Personal Edition database 10gR2, and I cannot for the newbie life of me figure out how to use this thing remotely, so that I can have Oracle running on my server at home and use it/develop with it using Enterprise Manager and SQL Developer from, say, a coffeeshop or other remote location via the Internet. (Exception: remote control software--RADMIN works well--but this is not a good non-emergency solution.)
Ultimately, it would also need to be secure (SSL or something), but at this point, I cannot get it to work at all. I know how port-forwarding and other firewallish things work, but I suspect the problem is that the Personal Edition uses a local loopback connection which may be inaccessible from the Net?
Of course I'm perfectly willing to buy the product if I can be assured that this will ultimately work reliably--is that's what's necessary to get it to work (the downloadewd version being crippled somehow?), or to get any support (folks say Metalink is helpful)?
Usually, the documentation is all I need to make something go, but the Oracle documentation I've looked at so far is at once incredibly expansive and not very helpful to me. (I may not know enough for it to be helpful: most of the documentation seems to assume you're already fully immersed in the Oracle world, and little of it seems specific to the Personal Edition's quirks.)
Any pointers to explicit documentation, let alone some step-by-step "here's what you have to do" instructions, would be tremendously appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Differences between Oracle Personal Edition and Enterprise Edition

What are the differences between the databases of Oracle Personal Edition and the Oracle Enterprise Edition..?

I have just looked at the metalink document and see that Oracle are still blatantly lying about the availability of analytical functions.
We chose standard edition on the basis of this document and were very annoyed to find we could not use analytical functions.
The document is about 8i. Of course we are all on 9i these days aren't we ?

yes, it will work, but only with the Western European Edition, not the Unicode release.

  • Oracle Database 10g Personal Edition. I can't find download.

I am looking for a Oracle release to work at home. I need compatibility with Oracle 9i, release installed at work. I think Oracle Database 9i Personal Edition would be perfect, but I didn't find where is the correct download for Linux.
I didn't find the Oracle Database 10g Personal Edition download too. Is there another name?

The enterprise edition download CD will give you the option of installing the personal edition as one of the install options.

Catch-22.. The other way of doing this easily is XQuery, but since in 10.2.0.1.0 XQuery had a dependancy on Java, and Java is not supported in XE we are back to square 1.
The only other ways are (a) string manipulation - which I refuse to discuss, or (b) DOM-APIOr Oracle Support providing the person with the relevant "alter session set events ..." statement to switch on that feature in 10.2.0.1 (as shown in the SQL and PL/SQL forum thread). Obviously as it's from Oracle support, it can't be supplied on the forums.

  • Oracle 10g Personal Edition

I see that there is a personal edition of 10g which appears to be embedded in the Enterprise installer.
The OTN refers to 30 day trial periods etc. but makes no specific reference to the personal edition.
Do the same 'rules' apply or is the personal edition as per industry standards - free to use to develop one's own database.
Often the personal editions of software allows one to develop and even deploy 'stand alone' software - not my purpose, which is for learning Oracle - but just wondering about the extent of use of the personal Edition.
    Regards,

The situation is that we do have a valid Oracle license for the system running at work. I just need to learn Oracle and develop applications that will be transferred to the Oracle server at work.
Need to do this at home as I haven't the time to do so at work - hence looking at the Personal version.
Have looked at XE but it doesn't come with the 'standard' tools that the commercial verions of Oracle come with.
Would like to proceed as per the 2 Day DBA course, which is more of a tutorial, so need to have 'hands on' experience. Not a good idea to mess around with a live database in my opinion.
    Thanks and regards
