10g Primary Performace - extra physical standbys

Hi
I have a 10g 3 node RAC primary db to a 3 node RAC standby (physical) db. (in SYNC mode delay = 0)
The SLA for the app is extremely tight.
I need to add 2 more standby databases (physical) in ASYNC mode.
Does anyone have any performance metrics on primary db performance when adding extra standby databases.
There is an oracle node about cascading standby db's in RAC environment (which suggests you shouldn't due to different redo streams).
Where will the bottleneck be ..... if any...

hello,
I need to add 2 more standby databases (physical) in ASYNC mode.
Does anyone have any performance metrics on primary db performance when adding extra standby databases.
its depends on several things
1. on the workload vs the cpu, memory, storage performance
2. the size of your database
3. network performance
4. if you have recent backup, will reduce the time and impact on primary db
There is an oracle node about cascading standby db's in RAC environment (which suggests you shouldn't due to different redo streams).
Where will the bottleneck be ..... if any...if you are using cascading standby db, then the workload of redo transport will be off the primary.
BUT "Cascaded Redo Transport Destinations... Releases prior to 11.2.0.2 have several limitations for this feature that are not present in release 11.2.0.2."

  • 10g Primary database work with a 11g Standby database

Can a 10g Primary database work with a 11g Standby database?
The existing database is Oracle 10g and I don't want to upgrade it. But I really need the Real-time Query feature of 11g Physical Standby Database.
    Can they work together?

    Hi,
    do you have any proof?
I never find any proof in Oracle Docs.Kindly refer to doc's and check things it states Primary and Standby Servers Versions must be same - similar to that you can find very much clear. That is more than enough for proof else Test it you will find your self...;-).

Post the source of your information abouit the limit of 9 names.
Even the Oracle doc shows 1..30 names in the same provided although that doesn't necessarily indicate a limit.

  • Problem with 2 physical standbys on same machine

    Hi,
I've set up the Dataguard with one primary on machine A and 2 physical standbys on the same machine B.
Note: the Dataguard worked fine with one primary and one phy standby on the separate machines.
The problem I have is the Redo Logs can only applied to either one of the phy stdbys.
Which one started 1st, then that phy stdby can apply the Redo Log.
The redo logs have been transferred to both phy stdbys successfully but ONLY one phy stdby can apply the Redo Logs.
Anyone got this experience, pls point out. Thanks.

Thanks a lot for asking me questions. Thus I understand my problem.
I checked the locations of datafiles of both phy stdbys, I saw they use the same datafiles.
Because when I created the phy standby, I shutdown the pri, copy a COLD backup of the pri to the stdby, then startup mount db. This is not right. The directories of the datafiles are not the same.
I'm not clear about how to create a phy stdby if their directories of the datafiles are different.
    Thanks.

  • DataGuard (1 primary and 2 physical stdby)

    Hi everybody,
could someone be so kind to point me to a doc explaining how to set up DataGuard with a primary and 2 physical stdbys ?
we have to modify the current configuration (1 primary and 1 physical stdby), adding a second physical stdby, and I'm not sure about whether there are 'special steps' to follow...
    Thanks in advance.

uhm guess you're referring to section E Cascaded Destinations...
quite honestly, I have always skipped this part, at least so far, since I've never had to use this
    i'll read this section then
    thanks

  • How to Create Primary DB and Physical/Logical Standby DB on the same host?

Now I encounter a issue. I want to create one Primary DB and one Physical standby DB and one Logical standby DB on the same host.
Create this env on the same host aims to test whether we can using EM Patching DP to apply patches on Primary/Physical/Logical DB successfully.
I try to setup this env but fails. I want to know more related issues about create Primary DB /Physical DB/Logical DB on the same host and how to configure between them.
    Below steps is my try:
    1. Create Primary DB on the /scratch/primary_db
    2. Create Physical Db software only on the /scratch/physical_db
    3. Create Logical Db software only on the /scratch/logical_db
    4. Using EM Wizard to create physical standby database and logical standby database, and these two targets can show up on the "All Targets" Page.
    5. But when using EM Patching DP, it fails and the reason is the listener of physical and logical db cannot configured well.
    Issues:
So I want to know about how to configure physical db and logical db's listener using EM or manually?
If the listener name of Primary Db is LISTENER and the port is 1521,and the listener.ora is under the /scratch/primary_db/network/admin directory, then how to config physical db and logical db's listener's name and port?

    Hi,
As this a test case then you need to create two more listener for each Oracle Home (/scratch/physical_db & /scratch/logical_db) make sure that they have different names and ports.
Then add the new listeners manually using GC?
Try it and let me know

  • 10g (Primary) to 9i (Standby) configuration

    Dear Gurus,
Can you please inform me that Is it possible to run Oracle 10g 10.2 as Primary Database Server and Oracle 9i 9.2.0.7 as Standby Database Server.
    Kindly help.
    Regards,
    Asif Abbasi

Note the requirement that the 10g database be running with COMPATIBLE set to 9.2 in order to permit a downgrade to 9.2. That would be a pretty unusual setting for a 10g database to have unless you had just upgraded it from 9.2 to 10.2. The last step of the upgrade process is generally to update the COMPATIBLE parameter.

is it posible?Yes it can possible very much. You have to configure as below in remote destinations.
    Example_:-
    Log_archive_dest_2='service= stby1 lgwr async ';
    Log_archive_dest_3='service= stby2 arch async ';
What is the plan behind that? just for testing purpose? Even me too not tested but you can try configuring as above. :)

  • Primary RAC with physical standby

    Hi all,
i have production setup as below
2 node 10gR2 RAC on win2K3 datafiles on ASM
    Oracle Standard edition
On the standby site it will be a manual standby (since SE) .
Biz doesnt want the archives to be on local NTFS partition, hence the archives are on ASM. To resfresh the standby i need to transfer the archives through RMAN (catalog database is used) but facing issues when i take archive backup and put it on standby (error says that the files are already on storage) . So i am unable to refresh .
i guess it should be done through some scripts .... but how to register archives on the standby site.
Xml interface through catxdb was also tried(where we can ftp files from asm) but it takes only one file at a time so there will be manual intervention and not effective strategy
one more question: can i mount a shared drive (archives on this location) on primary RAC and same to be mounted on standby. If this is possible then i just need to shutdown the standby and give path of archives in asm and recovery can be done ?
    pls share your feedback.....
    thanks
    [email protected]

So what I would do is this :
    On the Primary :
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=defer;
Then stop recovery on the Standby and shutdown the database.
Startup mount and start recovery again and run you query again on that sequence.
If it finally clears enable the primary again.
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=enable;
If not try to register it yourself.
By chance does this show its waiting for a gap
select process, status, sequence#, block# from v$managed_standby;Best Regards

  • OBIEE 10g: Slow To Send Physical Query

    Hi everyone,
I had a slow running report that I've been trying to troubleshoot. I spent about an hour tuning the queries from the log file and I got them down to about 20 seconds or so, which seemed reasonable since they were QTD figures.
I went to re-run the report and it still took over two minutes. Then I noticed that there is about 1.5 minute gap between when the report starts and when the BI Server sends the query to the database. I've got no clue as to what the BI Server is doing during this gap or why it happens. It always seems to be happening on this particular report. Below is an excerpt from the query log.
Has anyone ever seen this before? Does anyone have a recommendation on what I should do to fix this?
    Thanks!

    Muhammad Shakeel AzeemAzeem,
    Welcome to OTN,
Once you performed switchover, You need to perform changes with some parameters from standby FAL_SERVER
Earlier this parameter points to old primary, Now after switchover you have to put service name of new primary database service.
Also Make changes with remote destinations log_archive_dest_n with correct service names.
Refer this manual to work with multiple standby databases.
