10g (Primary) to 9i (Standby) configuration

Dear Gurus,
Can you please inform me that Is it possible to run Oracle 10g 10.2 as Primary Database Server and Oracle 9i 9.2.0.7 as Standby Database Server.
Kindly help.
Regards,
Asif Abbasi

Note the requirement that the 10g database be running with COMPATIBLE set to 9.2 in order to permit a downgrade to 9.2. That would be a pretty unusual setting for a 10g database to have unless you had just upgraded it from 9.2 to 10.2. The last step of the upgrade process is generally to update the COMPATIBLE parameter.

  • 10g Primary database work with a 11g Standby database

    Can a 10g Primary database work with a 11g Standby database?
    The existing database is Oracle 10g and I don't want to upgrade it. But I really need the Real-time Query feature of 11g Physical Standby Database.
    Can they work together?

    Hi,
    do you have any proof?
    I never find any proof in Oracle Docs.Kindly refer to doc's and check things it states Primary and Standby Servers Versions must be same - similar to that you can find very much clear. That is more than enough for proof else Test it you will find your self...;-).

  • Heterogenous Standby Configuration - Oracle 10g

    Hi All
    I was searching on net to find out if a Heterogenous Standby Configuration could be achieved in Oracle Database Server 10.2.0.4.0?
    We have our production Database running on Windows 2003 Server EE running on Dell PowerEdge. Its a two node RAC Database running Oracle database Server EE 10.2.0.4.0.
    For this set-up, could we look at having the standby on another server running SUSE Linux. If this is possible, we would be able to proceed with out actually procuring another hardware and also make use of this Linux machine which is failry under utilised at the moment.
    From your experiences, could you please advice if this is a sensible way. If such a set-up is existing, it could help from your experiences off what we could expect in terms of pitfalls and so on which you might want us to consider before making a decision this way?
    Many thanks for your recommendations in advance.
    Regards!

    Agreed.. As I was goind through some other posts on the net, I understand this Heterogeneous Standby Configuration is a new feature in Oracle database 11g ...
    We might also need to look at that possibility.. however, if there is a place which I could refer to and make some quick notes on such mixed OS configurations, it helps alot... I may also want to go through the 11g documentation meanwhile..

    Hello All,
    As per the Doc ID 414043.1 it is possible to use mixed word size primary-standby configurations since 10g and better in 11g.
    So i created my test env:-
    OS: Linux 5.5 64bit
    DB Name: TEST
    Primary  - TEST32 on 32bit Oracle Home
    Standby-  TEST64 on 64bit Oracle Home
    I could apply TEST32's archive logs(manually) on TEST64 without any problem, but when i tried to migrate to 64bit it kept failed with "ORA-00704: bootstrap process failure ORA-39700: database must be opened with UPGRADE option"
    What i did on TEST64 is:

  • Data guard synchronization after link down b/w primary and physical standby

    Hi All,
    I have configured data guard on oracle 11gr2 db. Normally switchover between my primary and physical standby happens smoothly and the Apply lag would be zero. Recently We had to test a scenario when the network link between Primary and Physical standby is completely down and Physical standby is isolated completely for more than half an hour.
    When we brought up the link every thing worked smoothly but apply lag started increasing from 0 to around 3 hrs. And then it started reducing to 0. Currently Apply lag and transport lag shows 0.
    But is this normal behaviour of oracle data guard that when the link between primary and physical standby is completely down, It requires 3-4 hrs for resynchronization ??? Even when during isolation, there were very few transactions happend on primary database ??
    Are there any documents available for this scenario??
    Thanks

    Hi, after the link is up, if there were some transactions and produced archive logs it's normal to take some time for resync. To check if 3-4 hours is normal or not, you can repeat the scenario and this time check
    - how many archivelogs does primary produce in this period.
    - after the link is up, does archivelog transfer immediately starts from primary to standby? Is primary able to send these archivelogs parallel?
    - Is there anything wrong with the apply process?
    check primary & standby alert log files, and run this query on standby to check the transport and apply processes:
    SELECT PROCESS, STATUS, THREAD#, SEQUENCE#, BLOCK#, BLOCKS FROM V$MANAGED_STANDBY;

  • How do the application servers connect the new database after failing over from primary DB to standby DB

    How do the application servers connect the new database after failing over from primary DB to standby DB?
    We have setup a DR environment with a standalone Primary server and a standalone Physical Standby server on RHEL Linux 6.4. Now our application team would like to know:
    When the primary DB server is crashed, the standy DB server will takeover the role of primary DB through the DataGuard fast failover. As the applications are connected by the primary DB IP before,currently the physical DB is used as a different IP or listener. If this is happened, they need to stop their application servers and re-configure their connection so the they coonect the new DB server, they cannot tolerate these workaround.
    Whether does oracle have the better solution for this so that the application can automatically know the role's transition and change to the new IP without re-confige any connection and shutdown their application?
    Oracle support provides us the answer as following:
    ==================================================================
    Applications connected to a primary database can transparently failover to the new primary database upon an Oracle Data Guard role transition. Integration with Fast Application Notification (FAN) provides fast failover for integrated clients.
    After a failover, the broker publishes Fast Application Notification (FAN) events. These FAN events can be used in the following ways:
    Applications can use FAN without programmatic changes if they use one of these Oracle integrated database clients: Oracle Database JDBC, Oracle Database Oracle Call Interface (OCI), and Oracle Data Provider for .NET ( ODP.NET). These clients can be configured for Fast Connection Failover (FCF) to automatically connect to a new primary database after a failover.
    JAVA applications can use FAN programmatically by using the JDBC FAN application programming interface to subscribe to FAN events and to execute event handling actions upon the receipt of an event.
    FAN server-side callouts can be configured on the database tier.
    FAN events are published using Oracle Notification Services (ONS) and Oracle Streams Advanced Queuing (AQ).
    =======================================================================================
    Who has the experience and the related documentation or other solutions? we don't have the concept of about FAN.
    Thank very much in advance.

    Hi mesbeg,
    Thanks alot.
    For example, there is an application JBOSS server connecting the DB, we just added another datasource and put the standby IP into the configuration file except adding a service on DB side like this following:
            <subsystem xmlns="urn:jboss:domain:datasources:1.0">
            <datasources>
                    <datasource jta="false" jndi-name="java:/jdbc/idserverDatasource" pool-name="IDServerDataSource" enabled="true" use-java-context="true">
                        <connection-url>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<primay DB IP>:1521:testdb</connection-url>
                        <connection-url>jdbc:oracle:thin:@<standby DB IP>:1521:testdb</connection-url>
                        <driver>oracle</driver>
                        <pool>
                            <min-pool-size>2</min-pool-size>
                            <max-pool-size>10</max-pool-size>
                            <prefill>true</prefill>
                        </pool>
                        <security>

                            <validate-on-match>false</validate-on-match>
                            <background-validation>false</background-validation>

                            <stale-connection-checker class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleStaleConnectionChecker"/>
                            <exception-sorter class-name="org.jboss.jca.adapters.jdbc.extensions.oracle.OracleExceptionSorter"/>
                        </validation>
                    </datasource>
                    <drivers>
                        <driver name="oracle" module="com.oracle.jdbc">

                    </drivers>

    If the failover is occurred, the JBOSS will automatically be pointed to the standby DB. Additional actions are not needed.

  • Steps for Data Guard with one primary and 2 standby

    Hi,
    Database :10.2.0.4, 11.2.0.1
    Os: Windows , Unix
    A ----------------> Primary database
    B ----------------> Standby Database 1
    C ----------------> Standby Database 2
    I want to configure *2 standby* databases for single primary database.
    Lets take, A ,B and C are my machines.My data guard configuration will be like,*archive logs will be moving* from A to B and A to C.
    If i do any switchover in between A and B , now B is primary and remaining A and C are standby databases.At this stage also , archive logs should move from B to A and B to C. Also, same should happen from C to A and C to B,If i do switchover in between B and C.If everything is fine , then i will do switchback to main Primary database(A).
    How do i have to mention PFILE in all machines ,the parameters like
    LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1=LOCATION=<PATH> -- LOCAL ARCHIVE PATH
    LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2=SERVICE=
    LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_3=SERVICE=
    FAL_SERVER=
    FAL_CLIENT=
    STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT=
    In my tnsnames.ora , primary,standby1 and standby2 are my service entries and these are same in all of my machines.

  • Switchover role transition in a standby configuration

    Hi All,
    Oracle 10.2.0.1
    Linux RHEL 5
    Vmware server 2.1
    Host Os Windows Xp
    I have created a database and configured the standby for it.This is a virtual machine setup.
    The current primary database has 3 redologfiles and no standby redologfiles added.And the standby database has the redologfiles same as the primary and 3 standby redologfiles configured just for enabling the real time apply.
    Now i am trying to switchover the roles of both the databases.
    So i gave the below command in the primary database
    sql>alter database commit to switchover to physical standby with session shutdown;
    i am getting the below error..
    ORA-16416: Switchover target is not synchronized with the primary
    When i check the V$archive_gap in standby nothing returns..
    I tried to switch logfile in the primary and manually transfered the recent archivelog to the standby location and applied manually, still getting the same error..
    Please Advice...
    TIA,

    You should create the standby logfiles on the primary as well. Also, you must point with the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_2 (probably) parameter from the standby to the primary with LGWR SYNC AFFIRM, in order to keep your protection level after the switchover. I would also recommend that you go with the Data Guard Broker in order to do switchover & failover, it's much easier to say
    DGMGRL> switchover to sb;And DMON will take care for all the appropriate SQL commands and LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n settings!
    Kind regards

  • Admin TACACS+ access fails ASA in Active/Standby Configuration

    We have two ASA 5510 with version 8.2(1) in Active/Standby configuration, the failover works fine, but when the primary ASA comes back it remains standby , so we manually change it to active with the failover active command, then we try to access the device using a TACACS+ account , it doesnt work , just the local account works; after a period of time (15min) , the TACACS+ access start to work.

    I'm not sure about your configuration but when in timed mode, a server that is declared "failed" will once again
    be made available after 30 seconds. Unlike reactivation mode, it is not
    necessary for all of the servers to fail before any can be reactivated.
    On possible source of confusion to be aware of in timed mode:
    The "show aaa-server" command will continue to show the server as FAILED
    until the server is needed to authenticate a connection.
    depletion
    Reactivates failed servers only after all of the servers in the group are inactive.
    timed
    Reactivates failed servers after 30 seconds of down time.
    Please tweak reactivation mode.

  • Db_file parameter change in oracle 8i with physical standby configured

    i have oracle 8i (8.1.7) with physical standby configured.
    i need to change the db_file parameter value. kindly check the below steps are correct? Thanks.
    1. alter database backup controlfile to trace;
    2. edit the init.ora file as db_file=<new value> (after backing up the existing pfile)
    3. edit the create control file statement in udump -- max datafile (and also remove the first line startup nomount)
    4. shutdown immediate;
    5. startup pfile ='file name';
    6. in sqlplus run the create control file statement;
    7. alter database backup controfl file for standby;
    8. move the standby control file to standby db server
    9. shutdown immediate in standby
    10. copy the pfile and edit the new values
    11. startup mount pfile='new pfile' (in standby)
    12. recover control file <location> from rman
    13. start the recovering of standby.
    Thanks,
    Raman.

    Just change the db_files value to some higher value in the init.ora file and restart the database. With this you can create more datafiles no need to create control file.

  • Replicate from primary to logical standby

    We are considering a logical standby, but have three tables with an XMLTYPE datatype. We have successfully set up a bi directional streams environment, with advanced replication also handling those tables that streams cannot (such as those already noted).
    However, when we try to setup advanced replication on the primary and logical standby, adding a master database at the logical standby hangs with AWAIT_CALLBACK from the standby. We turned off the guard, SKIPPED apply on the replication schema, but it still hangs.
    Is this by design (it does seem odd to replicate to a standby database, I know :)), or is this completely impossible, or are we missing something? Will we have to use Streams to accomplish this, rather than a logical standby (built on top of streams?)
    Thanks!

  • Primary in standalone , Standby in RAC

    What a preposterous Idea. I know.... This is not for production .
    I have created standalone Primary to standalone Standby succesfully in the past.
    At work I've been asked to create a 2-node standby DB for our 2-node RAC DB using RMAN Duplicate. I am planning to test this on my Laptop first. But my Laptop has only 8gb RAM. Using VM Ware workstation 8, I am planning to create
    Primary : A standalone DB
    Using RMAN Duplicate, I'll be creating
    Standby : A 2-node RACSince Primary is standalone and has only 1 thread and standby DB in RAC having 2 threads, I am not sure if this will work. Ever heard of anyone creating a setup like this.
    DB version :11.2.0.2
    Guest OS : Solaris 10 (August 2011 Release )
    Host OS : Windows 7
    Using VM Ware workstation 8

    Earlier ihad the same doubt.
    Larry carpenter & me had a discussion on this, I can remember that. Read below post.

  • Oracle 10g standby configuration - Restoring primary backup to Standby DB.

    Hi experts,
    This is my first time configuring a Standby (Data Guard) scenario for our Oracle data base. The platform used is Solaris 10 with Oracle 10g.
    After reviewing a lot of documents and tutorials regarding this matter still have some doubts on how to get this scenario finally configured.
    Basically I would like some confirmations regarding the following point. We have the new db already installed in our disaster recovery site and the next step I need to do is to perform an offline backup from our primary data base and then transfer that backup to our standby database. Iu2019m currently stuck in this steps since Iu2019m not completely sure on how proceed with this specific step. According to the following link http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/08/5744b84ae611d1894f0000e829fbbd/content.htm , the following steps are necessary:
           1.      Take a backup (online or offline) of the data files of the production database
           2.      Create a control file at the production site to be used at the standby site, by entering the following command:
    alter database create standby controlfile as <filename>
           3.      Archive the current online redo log of the production database, by entering the following command:
    alter system archive log current
           4.      Transfer the backed up data files, the control file and all archived redo log files to the standby site.
    Regarding the above step u201C4u201D... Could someone please detail me what all the data files are? As per SAP System Copy guide in its section u201CRestoring Database Files on the Target Systemu201D the following is indicated...and I think these are the files to transfers to the standby db.
    Files/oracle/<DBSID>/sapdata<x>
    All files/oracle/<DBSID>/origlog<x>
    All files/oracle/<DBSID>/mirrlog<x>
    Is my assumption correct?
    Please let me know which the correct steps are and if any other process is applicable or advisable over the above mentioned....let me know.

    Hi,
    As far as cold backup of database is concerned, backup of the folders you have mentioned is enough.
    Hope you have created a parameter file for the standby database and changed the primary parameter file as part of preparation of primary database.
    Here is a sample entry you have to have on standby parameter file apart from other entries..
    db_unique_name='STANDBY'
    fal_client='STANDBY'
    fal_server='PRIMARY'
    log_archive_config='DG_CONFIG=(PRIMARY,STANDBY)'
    Also browse through the following threads...it may help..
