10g R2 - when to make the jump?

Considering the current desupport date for the 9iR2 db server software of June 30, 2007, what's your feedback on jumping from 9iR2 to 10gR2 this summer of 2006? Is it too soon? Is 10gR2 stable/reliable enough at this point for mission-critical production systems in your opinion? Does 10gR2 provide enough added functionality, such as the security features, to merit a summer 2006 upgrade rather than waiting for a timeframe closer to the 9iR2 desupport date? And when upgrading to 10gR2, any gotchas to look out for that you may have encountered? I realize we will have to work through any compatibility issues between 3rd party vendor software & 10gR2; that may be one thing that potentially forces a timeline for upgrades for some of our databases.

We moved our major Production system over to 10gR2 (10.2.0.1) a few weeks ago. Of course, 10.2.0.2 came out right before we upgraded, so we had no chance to put it through regression testing, but it sure would have been nice.
It is hard to say if we "made the jump" too soon or not. As with anything else, there are pros and cons to consider. One of the biggest problems we have come up against so far is that Oracle Support is not fully versed in 10g, yet. We filed a Sev 1 SR and were assigned analysts who were complaining about all the new features in 10g that they did not know (good thing one our DBAs speaks Hindi). The new version is a very mixed bag - there are some really cool new features, but with the sad state of software development currently, there are a ton of bugs. Just take a look at all the bug fixes in 10.2.0.2 - and that is the known bugs. Another area that is tricky are staticistics, since Oracle is attempting to phaze out the RBO. I have found that there is not much written about new features (understandbly), so you have to dig for them, or attempt to comprehend the documentation.
In my opinion, if you are stable on 9i, I would wait to upgrade until you need (or really want) a new feature. I realize that sticking with 9i means you will probably have to apply many many patches (when is 9208 coming out?), but the core functionality does not change as much as when you jump to 10g. In the meantime, get up a few 10g databases and practice a lot with it. grin

Hi all, I'm trying to make the jump from JPEG to RAW, and am hoping you might be able to help with a few questions.
When I open JPEGs in Lightroom's Develop module, the settings are mostly zero by default. But when I open RAW files, some of the settings seem to have non-zero default to values.
Am I correct to think these settings are from metadata saved into the RAW file when I took the picture? eg, the camera saves the White Balance settings as metadata within the RAW file, even though the White Balance settings don't actually affect the image data itself. And so when I open that RAW file in Lightroom, it'll apply the White Balance as recorded within the file, making that a non-zero default.
Is that about right?
Does Lightroom similarly 'pre-set' other values when importing RAW files? (I ask because I seem to have non-zero settings for Blacks, Sharpening, as well as the Color slider under Noise Reduction.)
Meaning: I'm not quite sure "how much work" Lightroom is doing by default when I import RAW files, and how much I need to do to at least reproduce what my camera would do in making a JPEG.
For example, even though Color under Noise Reduction is given a value -- Luminance, also under under Noise Reduction, is left at zero. And the picture looks a bit grainy. Would my camera have processed some Luminance Noise Reduction? If so, is there a way to get Lightroom to help get that pre-set too?
Basically, is there a rule of thumb for how a novice should import a RAW file and have it reasonably "at least as good" as what the JPEG would have been?

Given that the camera ships with so many special effect presets -- is there no built-in preset that could be named "Auto Camera" so to speak? Or might it be possible import such a preset that somebody else has made?
Lightroom, nor any other third party raw processing program will not read the camera settings beyond simple stuff such as white balance. So you cannot do this. If you go raw, you really have to change your mindset and completely ignore the in-camera jpeg styles. Just set it to a neutral style and learn what the preview on the camera means for the actual raw data. You will find that this gives you orders of magnitude more creative freedom afterwards as you will not be stuck with a burned in interpretation.
So (for me) even just making my own presets -- let alone making separate presets for every ISO -- all that seems a bit daunting.
There really is no need to at all. I don't use presets for example. I think they are a waste of time as it is extremely rare that two images need exactly the same treatment. You really are just choosing a different starting point. I start all my raw at a relatively neutral setting (but using a camera profile generated from a colorchecker!) and blast through a shoot very quickly. You'll learn how to recognize what modifications to the Develop settings images need and just do it. Then typically I use auto-sync or manual sync to modify similar shots (say a series of head shots taken shortly after each other). I work differently as most of my photography is landscape, but a typical workflow for many photographers that do more people/style/event stuff is to import all the raw and start culling them with pick/reject flags and refine collection. You'll arrive at a subset that is worth looking at more closely and to finetune their development. The conservative default rendering helps you here because you'll quickly see what images are simply badly exposed, not in correct focus, etc. and you can reject them.
Think of your raw as the unprinted negative. It represents a nascent image. One that still has to form completely. A jpeg is like a polaroid. The image style is pretty much chosen for you by the film maker. There is very little you can do to it afterwards without it breaking down. Raw gives you much more freedom but it does come with a learning curve and it is more tasking for your equipment. Many people including many pros are simply not interested (or don't see the pay off) in this part of the creative photographic process and just shoot jpeg, which is a fine approach (just not mine). Lightroom can help you there too to quickly find the best images in a series, keyword, caption, and disseminate.

Well I figured it out, right click the arrow that makes the screen bigger and unclick the Hide Toolbar. I knew it couldn't be that hard.

Resolution
Verify that there is nothing plugged in to the headset jack, including headsets, headphones, or adapters.
Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is not switched to silent.
While on the Home screen, adjust the volume buttons. If you see the icon below, indicating that headphones are attached, there may be debris or an object lodged in the headset jack:
Check the headset jack. If there is an object lodged in the headset jack that is not easily removed, have the iPhone serviced to remove object.
For Original iPhone: If there is light debris, such as lint, in the headset jack, try connecting a pair of headphones to the headset jack and then remove the headphones. Repeat this several times to remove the debris.
If you have installed a protective film on the display, either ensure that the receiver is not covered or remove the film completely.
Check the receiver mesh (which is on the top front of the device, above the display). If it appears blocked, use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush away any debris.
If you have paired with a Bluetooth headset that is nearby, either use the headset or turn Bluetooth off (chooseSettings > General > Bluetooth).
Restart the iPhone.

Why does the text size shrink when I make the window smaller?

I have some notes in a DOCX page. I don't want the entire page blocking up the desktop yet I want to see the notes. When I change the size of the page, the text shrinks too. How useless is that?

Wrap Up - When i make the call don't appears Wrapup Pop-up

This guide shows that you can change the Wrap Up Mode. But I need to know how can I change the parameters because I need to do the Wrap Up when I do the call, not when i receive the call.
When a customer calls me, I click on Wrap Up button and in the end of call appears the Wrap Up Pop Up. But when i will make a call, the Wrap Up button is enable and I click on it, but in the end of call, the wrap up Pop up dont appears. Where I change the parameters for this?

The agent desk settings tab for outgoing only allows for the "Required" setting, which puts your agent into wrap mode. Unlike inbound, their is no "Required with Wrapup Data" which automatically pops the wrap box. To do what you are looking for, you would have to customize the CTI desktop to pop the wrap box.

I want my bookmarks to remain Alphabetized, but when I make the change in bookmark views it dose not make a permanent change once I exit the menu.

I go into organize bookmarks hit the view menu and choose A to Z which makes the change in that window...But once I leave and go back to the regular bookmark pull down the change has not been saved. They are still a jumble...whats up? How do I make the change permanent?

Sorting Bookmarks in Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks (the Library window) is for temporary display only. You can sort in the Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+B to open or close the Bookmarks Sidebar), by right-clicking on the "Bookmarks Menu" in the sidebar and choose "Sort by Name". You would need to do that each time you add a bookmark.
You can keep them permanently sorted with:

About to make the jump to lp7 from windows but......

1. EXS24 handles Giga and AKAI formats (some-not all) well. You just have to make specific directories and then hit "Import Giga"-or whatever. Then you can keep it or save it in EXS.
2. Kind of. Yes and no. There is no preset "Strum" mode-you can kinda do a makeshift one but not really reliable or simple there.
3. well, the more the better. 1GB minimum, 2GB is recommended for many projects (I didn't write the spec sheet-which may differ). Depends on how much sampling, multitasking, effects, and speed you want.
4. Logic Pro includes waveburner-also iTunes. You should be fine unless you have a particularly finnicky CD Player.
5. Export track/Region as audio file... Then place the file on a free track.
6. Uhm, lots. Electronic (General) and Rock (General). Also lots of Sound Design and editing stuff.

I am current in Sotheby's Africa and trying to FaceTime my daughter who also has the same ipad as me. My son in law also has the ipad. Despite using my daughters email, I cannot get through to her or my son in law. When I hit FaceTime I can hear the ringing tone, but after a while it comes up saying my daughter is not available, but she is sat by her ipad in the UK. I have checked everything is working so what can I do now to get through to her, especially for Xmas day.

Images on iPhone don't make the jump to iCloud using Photostream

This has more than likely been raised before, but I need to know why some images just will not get pushed from my iPhone to iCloud via Photostream.
The last couple of days I have been out & about and on each day I have taken approx 35 photos. When I get home, it sits around waiting for a while, then eventually, through the wi-fi, it starts to push the images to iCloud. However, out of say, 35 images, it might push just 30. But it won't be the last 5 that it misses, it will be random images throughout the 35.
This means I then have to upload the missing images (not easy if a lot of images are pretty similar) to Dropbox and add them manually - pain in the a*s.
There seems to be no reason for this. Is there a limit on how many images will upload at once? Why does it miss some and not others? Do you need to be plugged in to the mains and charging fro it to work properly? Or is this just another Apple glitch which will hopefully be resolved in the next iOS update??

You can try resetting it to see if that turns it on, but if it does not work, the iPhone is probably damaged from the fall and you should take it to an Apple Store so that they can have a look and determine if it is repairable. An out of warranty replacement will cost you money but much less than if you had to buy a new phone.

When I start to type a search Ff4 completes in the drop down but won't auto complete when I make the selection?

I have windows XP. When I try to do a search on Firefox 4 (which I loaded yesterday) and start my query the drop down box appears and when I highlight and click my choice it closes up the drop down box but doesn't put the selection back in the Google box? It happens all the time.

Why would my data collection stop when I make the VI an executable?

I collect data, and save it to a data directory. In full developement mode, the data collection works fine, but when I build an executable from the original vi it no longer stores the data.

How are you determining the path to the location for storing the data? Any paths that are determined based on the current location of a VI must take into account that the path to a VI is different when built into an executable. If you are doing a strip path, then you need to do one more in an executable. In the development mode, the path to a VI might be c:\junk\example.vi. In an executable, the path to the same VI will be c:\junk\junk.exe\junk.vi.

My husband has an iPhone 5 but he has never had his own Apple ID. I want to create one for him - but what will happen to his apps when I make the change on his phone? will he have to re-download them all and re-pay for them (if not free?)

I guess I don't think it's smart for him to "share" my ID - but am afraid of what I'll do to his phone (apps, really) if I go into the phone and change him to a new ID.

If you want seperate accounts for managing apps and purchasing content, basically yes, you need two account and would need to repurchase. However, if you just want seperate ID for iMessgae, icloud and such, you can do that and still continue sharing the same Id for apps and itunes.
