10G RAC on AIX without ASM & HACMP.
Hi,
I want to install ORACLE 10G RAC on AIX but I dont want ot use ASM or HACMP/GPFC.
Just want to install with CRS and RAW devices. Is it possible to install 10g RAC with CRS and RAW devices.
What is the best approach for this.
Regards
MMU
We're running CRS on AIX. No ASM or HACMP.
We do have the db datafiles on GPFS. We've also got one voting disk on GPFS and two on raw devices.

MULTIPLE USERS 10G RAC ORACLE_HOME INSTALL WITH ASM/CRS
Hi,
We need to install multiple 10g RAC databases on a two node Sun servers. Below is our configuration:
1) Sun Solaris (ver 10) with Sun Cluster 3.2
2) One ASM/CRS install (by 1 OS account)
3) Four ORACLE_HOME 10g database install (by 4 different OS user accounts)
We would like to use one ASM instance for all four databases with appropriate privileges.
OS User: OS Group
======== =========
oraasm dbaasm - (ASM and CRS install owner)
ora1 dbaora1 - first db owner
ora2 dbaora2 - second db owner
ora3 dbaora3 - third db owner
ora4 dbaora4 - fourth db owner
I understand that certain privileges need to be shared between ASM/CRS and DB owners. Please let me know the steps to be followed to complete this install.
Thanks in advance.Hi
Please read that: Documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B10766_08/intro.htm
- You can install and operate multiple Oracle homes and different versions of Oracle cluster database software on the same computer as described in the following points:
-You can install multiple Oracle Database 10g RAC homes on the same node. The multiple homes feature enables you to install one or more releases on the same machine in multiple Oracle home directories. However, each node can have only one CRS home.
-In addition, you cannot install Oracle Database 10g RAC into an existing single-instance Oracle home. If you have an Oracle home for Oracle Database 10g, then use a different Oracle home, and one that is available across the entire cluster for your new installation. Similarly, if you have an Oracle home for an earlier Oracle cluster database software release, then you must also use a different home for the new installation.
If the OUI detects an earlier version of a database, then the OUI asks you about your upgrade preferences. You have the option to upgrade one of the previous-version databases with DBUA or to create a new database using DBCA. The information collected during this dialog is passed to DBUA or DBCA after the software is installed.
- You can use the OUI to complete some of the de-install and re-install steps for Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters if needed.
Note:
Do not move Oracle binaries from one Oracle home to another because this causes dynamic link failures.
. If you are using ASM with Oracle database instances from multiple database homes on the same node, then Oracle recommends that you run the ASM instance from an Oracle home that is distinct from the database homes. In addition, the ASM home should be installed on every cluster node. This prevents the accidental removal of ASM instances that are in use by databases from other homes during the de-installation of a database's Oracle home. -
Hi all,
I've reinstalled my RAC test cluster. I'm always using my netapp for sharing files. RAC and Oracle sw are installed locally on both nodes, and now when I'm creating new instance the only option available is to use ASM.
But there's a way not to use ASM? for me it's enagh to use normal files.
Thanks
StefanoStefano,
I am assuming that you are using DBCA, if yes, on the seventh or eight screen it asks to select a storage mechanism and it gives you three options: -1) Cluster File System, 2) ASM and 3) Raw devices.
In you case you have to select the option 1) since you are planning to use NetApps filer.
HTH
Thanks

Single 10g Instance to RAC - without ASM migration
Is it possible to comment the following steps to convert existing 10.1.0.5 single instance database to RAC? We're using OCFS2 and it is not possible to perform ASM migration.
1. Copy the existing $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID1>.ora to
$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<db_name>.ora. Add the following parameters to
$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<db_name>.ora:
*.cluster_database = TRUE
*.cluster_database_instances = 2
*.undo_management=AUTO (Add if you don't have it )
<SID1>.undo_tablespace=undotbs (undo tablespace which already exists)
<SID1>.instance_name=RAC1
<SID1>.instance_number=1
<SID1>.thread=1
<SID1>.local_listener=LISTENER_RAC1
where LISTENER_RAC1 is an entry in the tnsnames.ora file like:
LISTENER_RAC1 =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <node1>)(PORT = 1521))
Keep only one line in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<SID1>.ora:
ifile=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/init<db_name>.ora
You could also create a common spfile from this pfile and add a line
like spfile=$ORACLE_HOME/dbs/spfile<db_name>.ora in each init<SIDn>.ora
file. For more details about how to do this, please refer to Note 136327.1.
2. Open your database and run $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/catclust.sql to create
cluster database specific views within the existing instance.
3. Recreate control file if you defined maxinstances to be 1 when you created
the single instance database.
To check your current setting of maxinstances, run the following command
while the database is mounted or open and connected as a user with DBA
privileges:
% sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect / as sysdba
SQL> startup mount
SQL> alter database backup controlfile to trace;
The trace file is located in udump directory. Check the maxinstance value
in the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement. Please refer to Note 118931.1
Recreating the Controlfile in RAC and OPS
4. Add instance specific parameters in the init<db_name>.ora for the second
instance on the second node and set appropriate values for it:
*** Names may need to be modified
<SID2>.instance_name=RAC2
<SID2>.instance_number=2
<SID2>.local_listener=LISTENER_RAC2
<SID2>.thread=2
<SID2>.undo_tablespace=UNDOTBS2
<SID2>.cluster_database = TRUE
<SID2>.cluster_database_instances = 2
where LISTENER_RAC2 is an entry in the tnsnames.ora file like:
LISTENER_RAC2 =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <node2>)(PORT = 1521))
5. From the first instance, mount the database and run the following command:
*** Path names, file names, and sizes will need to be modified
alter database
add logfile thread 2
group 3 ('/dev/RAC/redo2_01_100.dbf') size 100M,
group 4 ('/dev/RAC/redo2_02_100.dbf') size 100M;
alter database enable public thread 2;
6. Create a second Undo Tablespace from the existing instance:
*** Path names, file names, and sizes will need to be modified
CREATE UNDO TABLESPACE UNDOTBS2 DATAFILE
'/dev/RAC/undotbs_02_210.dbf' SIZE 200M ;
7. Set ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_HOME environment variables on the second node.
8. Start the second Instance. In order not to affect the current home on node1, another user oracle2 is created which belong to racinstall group. On node2, which doesn’t have any oracle home installed, CRS will be installed so that node2 will become the primary node.
Been looking into this CRS for sometime as the installation has failed due to OCFS2 kernel panic upon running root.sh on the second node. Performed the cleanup as described Doc ID: Note:239998.1 (10g RAC: How to Clean Up After a Failed CRS Install), but now, the installation is failing and giving the error “ File not found /ClusterCRS/install/rootadd”. This message didn’t appear the first attempt which could indicate that the cleanup described in the note was not sufficient. -
RAC on AIX 6.1 with HACMP
Hi
Can I have installation procedure and documents to Install 10gR2 RAC on AIX 6.1 using HACMP(for cluster control) instead of Oracle Clusterware. Is that possible ? anyone tried it before and share the experience.
Regards,
AktharDo you have any particular reason for using HACMP cluster control instead of CRS?
As you are going to install 10GR2 RAC So there is no need to use HACMP because 10G CRS can be installed without OS clusterware.
However CRS can be installed along with HACMP but oracle services should be controlled with CRS inly.

RAC Newbie: Does RAC on AIX require HACMP?
I've never installed/configured RAC before, and the documentation I'm finding has conflicts on whether HACMP needs to be installed. One FAQ states the following:
Is HACMP needed for RAC on AIX 5.2 using GPFS file system?
The newest version of GPFS can be used without HACMP, if it is available for AIX 5.2 then you do not need HACMP
Another documentation article states HACMP is REQUIRED for 9i RAC on AIX.
Does anyone know the real answer to this question? Our configuration is AIX 5.3, GPFS 2.1, Oracle 9.2.0.4. Thanks in advance!!The latest information from Oracle says:
Oracle9i RAC always requires HACMP.
HACMP is optional for Oracle Database 10g RAC.
See details in metalink note

Hello,
I always work with Linux (red hat) to build our RAC clusters, and I never have seen "abnormal" performance and stability issues.
Well, now I'm in a project to build a RAC in AIX 5.3. Somebody please can share the experience on this plataform? What is the "best practice" use or not HACMP? I've search in metalink and there's a lot of bugs related to Clusterware in AIX, the system is stable with RAC?
Thanks.Hi user572788,
HACMP is optional option for RAC on AIX, start with 10g, Oracle Clusterware doesn't depends on vendor cluster. I have a RAC 10g on AIX running with HACMP too, as long as you configured correctly and in certification matrix, you shouldn't see any problems. For me RAC on AIX is quite stable but still has a small issues. No system is perfect in this world
Cheers

10g RAC on HACMP (IBM clusterware)
we are in process of making 10g RAC without using Oracle Clusterware. we will be using HACMP Cluster software and IBM shared storage. After looking at few threads as below:
Re: 10g RAC on varitas Cluster Software + Shared storage
Re: Varitas Cluster Software + Oracle Clusterware Installation
came to know that Oracle Clusterware is compulsory for 10g RAC besides HACMP.
Can some one let me know why oracle clusterware is compulsory and point me to some Oracle documents that mentions the same.ML Note:220970.1 is the RAC FAQ - it would be a bit too much to paste all details here.
However, if you would let us know what details you are looking for, there might be other resources (not in metalink) that we can point you to. A starter could be this one:
Oracle Clusterware Whitepaper (PDF) (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clusterware/pdf/TWP_Clusterware_11g.pdf)
But the most important fact to note here is:
Is it supported to allow 3rd Party Clusterware to manage Oracle resources (instances, listeners, etc) and turn off Oracle Clusterware management of these?
In 10g we do not support using 3rd Party Clusterware for failover and restart of Oracle resources. Oracle Clusterware resources should not be disabled.
(taken from ML Note 220970.1 ;-))

Oracle database 10g RAC and ASm installation
Hi all,
I want to ask to everybody something about Oracle 10g RAC and ASm configuration. We plan to migrate to Oracle 10g from 9i, and we will begin configuring oracle but we have to decide which configuration are the best.
Our materials are bellow:
Hardware: RP 3440 (HP)
OS : HPUX 11i Ver 1
Storage: EVA 4000 (eva disk group)
The problem is:
Our supplier recommand us to use HP serviguard + HP serviceguard extension for RAC+ RAc and Raw device as configuration.
But we want to use Oracekl Clusterware + RAC + ASM
My question is if anybody know what is the best configuration, we want to use ASm.
Can we use HP serviguard and ASM.
Some documentations or link explain oracle RAC and ASM configuration will be appreciate.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.

Question: Rac Install Aix With HACMP
Hello,
I will be installing Rac on 11g aix and will be using raw partitions to configure OCR & voting disks without using HACMP. I however have the HACMP file sets installed, will this affect my install or cause any problems.Hi There
I had issues installing 10.2.0.1 CRS software.. not too sure about 11g however in principle this will have a problem .. We had to cleanup the filesets.
You will have issues when you run root.sh and will error message like following
"Failure at final check of Oracle CRS stack"
10
# Find out AIX Filesets.
lslpp -l |grep -i hacmp
# Uninstall file sets
HACMP filesets
RSCT filesets
Make usre you remove /opt/ORCLcluster directory .. and follow the CRS reinstall metalink doc if you have already tried installing CRS once.
Hope this helps
Thanks

Oracle 10g RAC, ASM or GPFS ?
Dear all,
We are implementing RAC 10g R2 on AIX 5.3, two nodes, using ASM.
The question is, using ASM do we still need to configure GPFS ?
(I come from development side, so I need to ask this question..)
Thank you,
xtantoDear xtanto,
I have several environments using 10gR2+ASM+GFS and works great and they are very stable. I will recommend it.
