10g RAC possible on Sun Solaros 10 local containers

Hi,
Is that any one setup the 10g RAC/ASM using raw devices under Sun Solaris 10 local containers? Would be very grateful if you advise on this.
Thanks,
Viji

Thanks Chandra!
I guess you are referring the Note:317257.1 but it's quite out dated 12/FEB/2007, I'm not sure any changes after that.

  • 10g RAC on Solaris 10 containers - Question on Approach

    Hi All
To introduce a little, I am trying to set-up 10g RAC (active-active) on Solaris 10 Containers. For the disaster recovery site, I was considering an option for storage replication across datacenters. As I look at the situation where the database could be highly transactional, I wanted to go for this option hoping I might be better able to recover db on dr site if a failure happens and also alleviate some load from the prod servers. In this regard I have a set of questions for which if you could share your experiences, thoughts .. I am sure will help my preperation.
1 Is Oracle Supported on Solaris 10 containers? I believe it is not supported and ofcourse am getting into the certification matrix for this with oracle. Anyways, any work around tried out by anyone ?
2 Which product is better in terms of performance while co-existing and co-functioning with Oracle? Sun Cluster!!! Vertas Cluster!!! any other? I am unable to link to any recommendations from Oracle and hence trying to understand the generic or say standard approach to this.
3 I understand on Prod site, Oracle remains active-active on two node cluster while I will mirror my SAN between Prod site and DR site on a timely basis, while DB is up and running. This mirroring has to be only an asynchronous mirroring for some limitations. I am unsure about my recoverability if we need to switch over to DR. Will I be able to recover the Database to a point when my last mirroring has been completed successfully when I say the mirroring happened while the Prod db is up and running (hot backup type on disk level). Until now I used a cold backup for Storage replication and I was sure to bring it up there. This hot backup kind of attempt is raising unrest and questions about the abilities.. :-(
4 I also have come across a term called federated databases? Is it similar to what I am trying to achieve here? Storage level replocation across data centres?
I know it takes some time to get to the end of it and finally implement it, but your inputs will certainly help me get things straight before I hit this first click. Thanks for all your inputs, advices, suggestions. :-)
    Regards!
    Sarat

According to Oracle "Both Oracle 9i R2 and 10g R2 databases have been certified to run in a Solaris Container."
There are references here :- http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5397695
"Oracle databases (RAC and non-RAC) have been certified to run in a global Solaris 10 Container"
What storage are you using ? (filesystem, ASM ?) Personally I prefer ASM now, but it does depend on the storage platform and backup strategy.
What backup infrastructure do you have ? RMAN backup directly to tape is better than file copy.
For DR standby purposes I would use Dataguard instead of disk mirroring / storage replication. It is much more flexible (e.g can switch direction of replication, do incremental backups from the standby etc).
I would use CRS instead of VCS. CRS is built for the job, and integrates with netca, dbca, etc for service management, and also integrates with Dataguard Broker for standby switchover.

  • Is it possible to use multiple encryption algorithms in Oracle 10g RAC?

We have two separate databases on same physical servers, running 10g RAC Using TDE, is it possible to have different encryption algorithms for each database?

It is possible to have every column in a single table use a different algorithm.

  • DO I need SFRAC for Oracle 10g RAC  on Sun Solaris

My platform is SUN Solaris 10 64 bit on v490 server. On the backend side, we are using EMC CX500 storage. We will use Veritas File system and Veritas CFS.
I would like to ask, Do I must need SFRAC to configure Oracle 10g RAC or Can I just use only Oracle CRS. I do not want to use ASM.
    Please advise
    Thanks,
    Sam..

The VCFS usually requires a Veritas Cluster, thus you would have to use the product combination that is bundled as SFRAC as mentioned before. Metalink in addition says:
10      10gR2 64-bit      Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC      5.0      Certified
There is one exception to this rule: Linux.
Veritas and Oracle support a standalone version of the Veritas Cluster Files System (and only this component) on Linux. This does not hold true for Solaris.
Concluding, if you want to use the VCFS you would need to get a VCS, which then basically means using SFRAC.
However, in this case, as mentioned before, you would not need ASM.

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
    /orasoft     10 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /oracrs          2 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /orabackup      100 Gb          OCFS2 File system
The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

  • MULTIPLE USERS 10G RAC ORACLE_HOME INSTALL WITH ASM/CRS

    Hi,
We need to install multiple 10g RAC databases on a two node Sun servers. Below is our configuration:
    1) Sun Solaris (ver 10) with Sun Cluster 3.2
    2) One ASM/CRS install (by 1 OS account)
    3) Four ORACLE_HOME 10g database install (by 4 different OS user accounts)
We would like to use one ASM instance for all four databases with appropriate privileges.
    OS User:           OS Group
    ========      =========
oraasm           dbaasm - (ASM and CRS install owner)
    ora1           dbaora1 - first db owner
    ora2           dbaora2 - second db owner
    ora3           dbaora3 - third db owner
    ora4           dbaora4 - fourth db owner
I understand that certain privileges need to be shared between ASM/CRS and DB owners. Please let me know the steps to be followed to complete this install.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    Please read that: Documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B10766_08/intro.htm
    - You can install and operate multiple Oracle homes and different versions of Oracle cluster database software on the same computer as described in the following points:
-You can install multiple Oracle Database 10g RAC homes on the same node. The multiple homes feature enables you to install one or more releases on the same machine in multiple Oracle home directories. However, each node can have only one CRS home.
-In addition, you cannot install Oracle Database 10g RAC into an existing single-instance Oracle home. If you have an Oracle home for Oracle Database 10g, then use a different Oracle home, and one that is available across the entire cluster for your new installation. Similarly, if you have an Oracle home for an earlier Oracle cluster database software release, then you must also use a different home for the new installation.
If the OUI detects an earlier version of a database, then the OUI asks you about your upgrade preferences. You have the option to upgrade one of the previous-version databases with DBUA or to create a new database using DBCA. The information collected during this dialog is passed to DBUA or DBCA after the software is installed.
    - You can use the OUI to complete some of the de-install and re-install steps for Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters if needed.
    Note:
Do not move Oracle binaries from one Oracle home to another because this causes dynamic link failures.
. If you are using ASM with Oracle database instances from multiple database homes on the same node, then Oracle recommends that you run the ASM instance from an Oracle home that is distinct from the database homes. In addition, the ASM home should be installed on every cluster node. This prevents the accidental removal of ASM instances that are in use by databases from other homes during the de-installation of a database's Oracle home.

  • 10G RAC on AIX without ASM & HACMP.

    Hi,
I want to install ORACLE 10G RAC on AIX but I dont want ot use ASM or HACMP/GPFC.
Just want to install with CRS and RAW devices. Is it possible to install 10g RAC with CRS and RAW devices.
What is the best approach for this.

We're running CRS on AIX. No ASM or HACMP.
We do have the db datafiles on GPFS. We've also got one voting disk on GPFS and two on raw devices.

I would like to know what happens with existing connections

    Are connections frozen, actives?
Can the users continue to use theses existing connections using the another node of RAC?If the interface is down? what do you think? All connections to this node will die. How does your application handle fail-over, does it attempt to reconnect or just have a complete application failure?
You should spend some time in a test lab where you can test this stuff for yourself. Read the documentation and there are tons of sites out there that purport to have all of your RAC/TAF/FAN/FAF questions. - I would read and trust the documentation first.

10G RAC: CRS 설치 실패 후 정리 방법
    =====================================
    PURPOSE
이 문서는, DBA와 기술 지원 엔지니어가 10g RAC의 CRS (Cluster Ready Services)
실패시, 일부 설치된 CRS를 제거하는데 필요한 정보를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
    Explanation
설치에 실패한 CRS는 노드 리부팅과 같은 문제를 야기 시킬 수 있다.
실패한 CRS 설치본을 정리하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 절차를 따른다:
    1. $ORA_CRS_HOME/install 디렉토리에서 rootdelete.sh 스크립트를 실행한 후 rootdeinstall.sh 스크립트를
    srvctl stop nodeapps -n <node name>
    3. 노드 부팅시 CRS가 구동되는 것을 예방한다. 이를 위해 root 계정에서 다음과 같은 작업을
    수행한다 :
    Sun:
    rm /etc/init.d/init.cssd
    rm /etc/init.d/init.crs
    rm /etc/init.d/init.crsd
    rm /etc/init.d/init.evmd
    rm /etc/rc3.d/K96init.crs

    ps -ef | grep crs
    kill <crs pid>
    ps -ef | grep evm
    kill <evm pid>
    ps -ef | grep css
    kill <css pid>
    5. CRS 설치 디렉토리를 제거한다:
    rm -Rf <CRS Install Location>/*
    6. Oracle Universal Installer에서 CRS home을 De-install 한다.
    7. dd 명령으로 OCR 및 Voting File을 제거한다. 예 :
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/V1064_vote_01_20m.dbf bs=8192 count=2560
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rdsk/ocrV1064_100m.ora bs=8192 count=12800

  • Oracle 10g RAC to 11g RAC Upgrade on Solaris

    Hi,
We are planning to do a migration of a 4 Node Oracle 10g RAC on Solaris 9 to 11g with Solaris 10. We'd like know what would be the best path to take. We cannot afford any downtime!
Options: Are these feasible? Which option is best? Any documents links?
    a) Do a rolling upgrade of Oracle from 10g to 11g. Then take down individual nodes and upgrade the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 and bring them up back into the cluster. Is there any known issues taking this path? Is a rolling upgrade like this possible?
    b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes?
    c) Use Dataguard with 2 different RAC environments (2 nodes each). How would this work? Is it the only possible way? Any steps please?
    Thanks

    a) Do a rolling upgrade of Oracle from 10g to 11g. Then take down individual nodes and upgrade the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 and bring them up back into the cluster. Is there any known issues taking this path? Is a rolling upgrade like this possible?Hi,
first of all i would not change several components (OS, database version) at a time. My recommendation is to make small steps and start with the operating system first. Seconds recommendation is to test and test everything in your dev or test environment prior doing the upgrades in the productive environment. Trust me: You will face problems :-) So you better try it beforehand!
    b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes? As far i know you can run different operating system versions on different nodes if they are supported (Solaris 9 and 10 are).

  • Is there a way to use different NIC names in 10g RAC?

For example node 1 has ipge0 for private, ipge1 for private and node 2 has Solaris default e1000g0 and e1000g1? Or do interface names have to match on all nodes? I am not referring to IPs or subnets - just NIC names.
    Here is some background.
This was a 2 node 10g RAC on Solaris that has been in operation for years. Node 2 experienced a corrupt root partition (OS, nothing to do with Oracle), so OS was reinstalled. After OS reinstall I copied /var/opt/oracle/*.* from node 1, changed them to reflect node 2 info, plus CRS related files from /etc/init.d, such as init.crsd, etc. This is shared Oracle home, so Oracle continued to run on node 1 just fine.
However, after crs startup nodeapps tells me "atlts04ra.atlts04.vip:ifconfig: status: SIOCGLIFFLAGS: ipge0: no such interface". Indeed, this interface does not exist on node 2.
So, is there a way to instruct oracle to use different interface names for nodes? Or will vipca ask for matching NIC names just like disk mount names have to match?
I want to avoid reinstallation of RAC because that will disrupt oracle database that has been running on shared oracle home all along.
    Thanks.

Fzheng, I am very interested in your statement "however you can change the e1000g0 to ipge0".
You mean to say there is an OS script that will downgrade ipge0 interfaces to e1000g0?
I got some more information from SysAdmins yesterday. Apparently, when OS was reinstalled on node 2 after root partition corruption, they also patched it up to Solaris 10u9 (which by default created e1000g0-type interfaces). The first node still had 10u7 with ipge0 interfaces. We, the DBAs, were not aware of the upgrade. So, nodeapps cant start saying "no such interface"on node 2.
You are probably referring to script /usr/sbin/e1000g_transition.
    Here is the description:
    "DESCRIPTION
This script allows you to perform an optional driver upgrade
for the Intel PRO/1000 device present on this system from the \"ipge\"
network driver to the Sun standard \"e1000g\" network driver. The
e1000g driver include features such as link aggregation as well as
superior performance in most environments. Moving forward, e1000g
will benefit from new features as they become available, bug fixes,
and performance enhancements. The disadvantage is that some
applications configuration files may require modification to use
e1000g if they reference the ipge network interface.
This script must be run in single user mode.
This script will alter network interfaces and related system
configuration files. Configuration files for 3rd party applications
will NOT be changed. After running this script, applications present
on the system may require maintenance. The system may be in an
unsecured state. The effects of this script may be reversed using
    the backout (-b) option."
So, if I understand you correctly, you are proposing to run this this script with the backout (-b) option on node 2, so interface names will match.
    Is this correct?
    Thanks.

I have combined the MEtalink doc:362135.1 and the docs describing building a 10gRAC "database" using VMware..I want to know if the below process is good enough to get the required results:
    Steps:
    -Install VMware on HOST m/c
    -Configure 1st virtual m/c, say RAC1
    -Install RHEL on RAC1
-Install 11i with 9i database on the local SCSI bus- SCSI 0:0
    -Install VMware client tools
-Create a new ethernet adapter(for private interconnect) on RAC1
    -Create shared disks on RAC1
    -Partition the disks
-Add the disks as RAW devices in /etc/rawdevices
    -Clone RAC1 to a new virtual m/c,say RAC2
-Delete the 11i apps directories from its local SCSI bus..since these would be redundant on RAC2
-Install Clusterware s/w on RAC1 using the same oraInventory that is used by the Applications 11i installation-
-Install the 10g DB software and create ASM instances using dbca
-Install Database componenets from 10g companion CD
-Upgrade CRS abd DB s/w to 10.2.0.4
-Upgrade the 9i database to 10g using dbua from the 10g ORACLE_HOME
-Convert the newly upgraded 10g databse to RAC using the rconfig tool
    -Post migration steps for RAC
-Enable AutoConfig on the Applications Database tier
    - Follow the "Establish Applications Environment for RAC" section from Doc:362135.1
    -Configure PArallel Concurrent Processing(PCP)
    Thanks,
    Sandeep

(Considering that there are only 2 nodes the scenario the steps would be as follows:
    1. Install RAC using the steps provided at the link:
    http://oracle-base.com/articles/10g/OracleDB10gR2RACInstallationOnCentos4UsingVMware.php
2.On RAC1 create a single instance of Oracle 11i (Both DB and Apps are on the same node)
    3. Follow the steps outlined in the Note:362135.1
One thing to note is that the steps are the same whether the nodes are real or virtual.

  • Linux Cluster File System partitions for 10g RAC

    Hi Friends,
I planned to install 2 Node Oracle 10g RAC on RHEL and I planned to use Linux File system itself for OCR,Voting Disk and datafiles (no OCFS2/RAW/ASM)
    I am having SAN storage.
I would like to know how do i create shared/cluster partitions for OCR,Voting Disk and Datafiles (common storage on SAN).
Do i need to install any Linux cluster file system for creating these shared partitions (as we have sun cluster in solaris)?
If so let me know what versions are supported and provide the necessary Note / Link
    Regards,
    DB

  • Solaris 10 and Hitachi LUN mapping with Oracle 10g RAC and ASM?

    Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
    My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
    Thanks for your help!

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?
