10g upgrade and charset converison

Hello,
I'm planning for upgrading my 9i DB to 10.2.0.4 , also i want to upgrade my Database character set to UTF8.
Is there any possiblity that both of these objectives can be achieved in one go ?
May be using import/export or something ?
Appreciate your help!
Thanks,
Nik

I don't think that there is one Oracle tool to allow to do database upgrade and character set conversion in one go.
I would recommend first to upgrade database to 10g and then to change character set because 9i has limited support now.
Database character set change is documented in [ Globalizaton Guide|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch11charsetmig.htm#sthref1476] ].

  • Oracle 10G upgrade and MRP planning problems

We just upgraded to Oracle 10G and are having users complaining about MRP not planning in correct low level code sequence. What has happened is that the MRP is planning component parts before the parent parts. We have never had this occur before and are on 4.6C hot pack 38. Help!!

    Hi,
There are some Post-Upgrade Tasks like set compatible, db stats, check invalid objects, removing some database parameters, etc.  Make sure you perform these if you have not, please refer to your specific Oracle upgrade guide.

  • 10G upgrade exam

    Hi All,
I am preparing for Oracle9i DBA OCPs to Oracle Database 10g upgrade exam 1Z0-040.
If anyone have sample practice questions/dumps for the same kindly send me at [email protected]
    Thanks in Advanced,
    Bhupinder

Earlier, there use to be some kind of test dumps available for 9i and other exams. What I heared from few people that they follow the same for 10g upgrade and they failed. Because, the pattern has changed and hardly a couple of questions have come. My recommendation would be read oracle docs for 10g new features, make practice and SYBEX 10g upgrade book might also helpfull.
Just reading dump and appearing exam could lead you to pass exam, but, ultimately, gaining nothing. Make practice and appear for the exam.

  • Portability between Designer 9i r2 and Designer 10g r2, and deployment?

I have some questions to ask...
I have been given the job of adding Oracle to the reportoire of databases available to be used for a commercial Delphi application. The idea is to create a database in 10g that this application can talk to.
I wish to develop the database, constraints and triggers etc using Oracle Designer (not because I think it's best, but simply I know how to use it, and don't know JDeveloper yet, and time is of the essence).
Here's where the problem lies: The last application I developed was on 9i r2 and was going to a 9i r2 platform, and I generated DDL for the database tables stuff, and also for the table API, ending up with two sets of script files to run on the target system. Two of the lines of code in the table API script were:
    @ C:\oracle\9iDSHome\cgens72\sql\cdsaper.PKS
    @ C:\oracle\9iDSHome\cgens72\sql\cdsaper.PKB
Of course the pathnames weren't right, but when I fixed them I managed to get the system installed correctly. However the clients for the application I am working on now should not have to have developer installed... I want them to be able to just run the script files into a 10g database and not worry about designer/developer at all.
The other issue is just as serious. Although clients shouldn't have to have designer installed, I want the application developer/company owner to be able to fiddle with the designer if he wants to. I have 9i where I work, and he will have 10g. Will I be able to do a repository export/dump from my 9i r2 and import it to his 10g r2? With the previous project I did, I couldn't even import the designer export from my 9i r2 to the 9i r2 at the workplace... it said "Incorrect header file" - it was lucky I had the DDL script files or I would never have got it in the database at all! If they had had a different version of oracle then I don't know what would have happened when trying to run those package files from developer (the comments say something about an error package or some such)!
Eventually I'm going to upgrade to 10g for database development but I don't want to just yet.
    So my questions are:
    1. Can I develop the system using 9i r2 DB and 9i r2 DS and then create DDL scripts to be run on 10g client databases without having to have developer installed on the client machines? could my "boss" distribute those two developer package files with the DDL scripts to the clients without breaking some kind of copyright?
    2. Will I be able to import a Designer 9i r2 export into a Designer 10g r2 repository for my "boss" to make adjustments and produce refined DDL scripts himself later on?
If the only thing holding me back is having 10g installed where I work then tell me now and I'll take the plunge. If there's other issues I need to find a way around them.
I thank you in advance for any advice you can give
    Thanks
    Adam Sawyer

    Hi,
This issue has been reported with Designer Releases prior to 9.0.4.4 against 10g database.
Please upgrade to the latest Designer Release 9.0.4.5 the import will work fine.

  • Collection of stats prior to 10g upgrade for dictionary tables

Collection of stats prior to 10g upgrade for dictionary tables is required? I thought if you are upgrading from 9i to 10g the stats in 9i become stale in 10g.
I read a document that says you need to collect stats prior to upgrade and import them once your upgrade is done. Can someone guide me?

I don't know where did you get these? There's some optimizer improvement and new feature in 10g. Collecting stats before upgrade and import later is unheard of.
I suggest you check this article

Is oracle application server 10g forms and reports standalone softaware available in 64-bit version?
Please provide the link to download thye same.
    Thanks,
    Anand.

1GB of RAM seems to work better. I just upgraded to 1GB from 512MB on a new ThinkPad running XP, 10g release 2 database, and 10.1.2 Application Server (Forms and Reports version). When I had 512, something broke and I wound up resetting the factory defaults using the IBM recovery tool. When I added the extra memory, everything went well. On the other hand, a four-year-old Dell desktop with 512MB works okay. Whatever.

  • Oracle AQ tables - 9i to 10g upgrade

We have Oracle AQ implemented in one of our application. Our database on the test environment recently went through an upgrade from 9i to 10g. Now when we deploy the application we are getting the following error:
Caused by: oracle.oc4j.admin.internal.DeployerException: Error initializing ejb-module; Exception Error in application mdo: Error loading package at file:/oc4j/oc4j10.1.2.0/j2ee/soc4j/applications/mdo/mdo.jar, Error deploying file:/oc4j/oc4j10.1.2.0/j2ee/soc4j/applications/mdo/mdo.jar homes: JMS Error: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges

    ORA-06512: at line 1
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AQJMS", line 174
    ORA-06512: at line 1
The user does have the execute privileges. A quick look at the queue table revealed that the table has changed significantly after the 9i to 10g database upgrade and that could be the reason we are seeing this error. Quick differences we are seeing are all columns with DATE datatype on 9i are now defined as TIMESTAMP(6) under 10g, and there is an additional column call user_prop of type SYS.ANYDATA.
Can somebody please confirm this ? I thought Oracle AQ will be backwards compatible and will be an abstract interface to the application but looks like its not. How do I get this issue resolved ?

I suggest you revoke all the privileges and grant once again.

  • Singl/Multiple Server Oracle 10g DB and AS- Advantages and DisAdvantages

    Hi Friends,
I am using Application1 using Oracle 10g Application Server and Oracle 10g database.
Now i planned to use Application2 using Oracle 10g AS and Oracle 10g DB
I need to know what will be the Advantages and Disadvantages if i have the schema for Application2 in the existing Oracle 10g DB / having it in another Oracle 10g DB Server
sameway what will be the advantages and disadvantages if i have the Application2 regsiterd in existing Oracle 10g AS(Multiple OC4J Instance) / having it in another Oracle 10g AS Server.
    Regards

To start the list, for me some of the advantages are:
    Same DB:
    - less overhead and wasted CPU Cycles (therefore potentially lower license fees)
    - easier maintenance (backup, recovery)
    - easier tuning (fewer conflicting external environments asking for same resources)
    - Oracle is designed for this, allows use of Resource Manager
    - technically RAC is a clustered 'same DB'
    Same AS:
    - less overhead and wasted CPU Cycles (therefore potentially lower license fees)
    - easier maintenance (backup, recovery)
    - easier tuning (fewer conflicting external environments asking for same resources)
    - Oracle is designed for this, use AS clustering
    Different DB:
    - separate maintenance (patch, upgrade) cycles for different SLA
    - easier tuning (isolate tuning to one app)
    - easier security (most developers have no idea about Oracle security and make merge impossible)
    Different AS:
    - separate maintenance (patch, upgrade) cycles for different SLA
    - easier tuning (isolate tuning to one app)
    - easier security (most developers have no idea about security)

  • Heavu CPU Utilization of Dictionary Query - After 9i to 10g Upgrade

    Hi Friends,
We have migrated our production DB from Oracle 9i(Windows) to Oracle 10g(AIX) and after that a heavy cpu utilization query is coming frequently and hence many timeouts are happening in the application.
Application is connecting to the database through Java Application (JDBC).
Once the application service is started, below query is invoked and CPU takes around 20% continuously.
The interesting thing is this query is not owned by the application schema but by SYS and it's invoked from Application Schema.
We have raised an SR but still no luck.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • How to upgrade AND move between platforms with different Endians...?

    Hi, all,
I have two databases - one of 500Gb and one of 50Gb - that are currently running on 10.2.0.4 on AIX 64-bit. They are Production systems.
I have to move them to a brand new Linux (RHEL 5.6 - 64-bit) server that will be running 11.2.0.2.
For test, I'm OK with this being done with Data Pump. But for the eventual move to 'New Prod', this will result in hours' worth of downtime and it's a business-critical system, so I'm trying to mitigate that as much as I can.
I was, naively, hoping to use RMAN to both move the databases from one box to the other, but also to upgrade them. I figure I would do the following (as per Metalink 369644.1) as I have a Recovery Catalog, etc, etc:
Install the binaries on the New Prod server
Connect to the RCAT and restore the database and recovery to a PiT
Manually upgrade the database by putting the DB into STARTUP UPGRADE and running the catupgrd.sql
Unfortunately, I didn't realise the Endian was different between AIX and RHEL (as per 1079563.1). Oops.
It doesn't look like I'll be able to use Transportable Tablespaces (as per 243304.1) either without first having to migrate the data across as a 10g DB and then upgrading.
So my options appear to be:
    a) Data Pump and suck the outage up
    b) Move the data using Transportable Tablespaces to 10.2.0.4 and then upgrade to 11.2.0.2.
Are there any other options? I have hopes that a logical standby would work in this instance a la rolling upgrade, but suspect that the different O/S AND the different Endian would scupper that idea...
    Mark

Perhaps, I have more experience using concurrent exports/imports using the traditional exp/imp utility than using the parallel option on expdp/impdp. One thing you can do with exp/imp that you cannot do with expdp/impdp is export into a named pipe, start a remove copy of the named pipe to the new server, and then start importing from the named pipe on the new server so that you are importing while still exporting the same objects. We use tables= exports when we did this back when the tables= parameter could only handle 99 tables. We had a separate export for every large table and then a set of exports for 99 tables for each of the other tasks ran 6 to 12 concurrent processes.
One thing to look at is historic data. Potentially some tables can be moved in advance of the majority of the application objects and replaced with synonym to remote objects.
Truely static tables could also potentially be moved in advance even if only a day or two before to reduce the number of objects to be moved.
Build the new database in noarchive log mode to save some processing and switch it over and immediately back it up when you migrate.
And Yes, if the two platforms appear in the view name I gave you then you can use transportable tablespaces with the rman conversion step. Instructions for using rman to do the conversion are in the rman manual.

Has anyone tried an upgrade from 9.0.4.2 to 10g yet ?
I have just downloaded and started browsing through the docs, and have noticed that Oracle Files cannot be upgraded and you must wait for the next release.
Does anyone know anymore about this ?
    Regards,

    hi,
Yes.we can not update our 9.0.4,have to wait for next release.
Also in current 10g release, there is no any user interface in content service.
I asked oracle sales, they said the next release with content service included will be release in about 1 or 2 month.
    maybe a good news.

There's no upgrade path for OCA certification. You have two choices:
    - Pass 10gOCP exam and upgrade the whole OCP certification to 11g version (two exams - 10gOCP, 11gOCP upgrade)
    - Start taking 11g exams (11g OCA and OCP)
