10Gb-10Gb cross-device compatibility questions (PHY-connectors)...

Hi, all, in general, I'm a little surprised at all the PHYsical layer standards running 10Gb Ethernet. This seems to have hindered adoption rate substantially. I have been recently getting questions like can I connect this server chassis to this switch device. or can I connect future-proof the switch deployment now so that it will handle 10Gb firewalls when we buy those. And we have some older 6509e chassis with SUP-720, which don't seem to be able to support SFP+ linecards easily. this is pretty confusing, so just wondering if someone has found a document covering all the PHY-layer interoperability gotcha's.
I found this link, which shows the different 10Gb cards/modules for the switches:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/interfaces_modules/transceiver_modules/compatibility/matrix/OL_6974.html
And this link, which explains the different L2 connector types
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-gigabit_Ethernet
Questions:
1. What is required for 6509e with VS-SUP720-10G to support SFP+ 10Gb connectors? looks like I need a WS-X6708-10G-3C with a special convertor: CVR-X2-SFP10G? will this WS-X6708-10G-3C run with VS-SUP720-10G?
2. In general, can I always adapt a XenPak/X2 connector to a SFP+ connector somehow with a special dual-end cable?
3. Are there any connector types that will not be compatible with each other? Such as Xenpack wont connect to X2. I could read the matrix, but wondering if anyone ran across any that stick out for them?
4. If I have a cable such as this SFP-H10GB-CU5M=  (SFP+ twinax), will that work to connect up a typical server such as HP proliant with an SFP+ NIC, in almost all cases? one reason I ask is that I see the server guys bringing in their SFP+ Direct Copper cables with premade SFP+ ends, and wondering if those will be fine in most cases connecting up to cisco switch side. Or vice versa, if I use the pre-made cisco cable, will it connect to a server NIC? historically, different vendors didn't play nice with regard to these SFP standards. Does this relegate me to pretty much buying cisco SFP+ connectors in some version of fiber, and connect them to the HP-branded SFP+ fiber connectors?
5. what are the future adoption plans for 10GBASE-T (8P8C). It seems like cisco makes a connector (X2-10GB-T), which looks promising. Is anyone using those? Does anyone think that will become the predominate standard in time, like it has for 1GB connections?

X2-10GB-T is end of life soon.

  • Syncing iPad & iPod...  device USB port cable connector question

I have an iPad & iPod 4th gen.... both syncing cables look identical..no identity markings on either. I'm not sure now which came with which device.
QUESTION: Are the syncing/charging ( know I can't charge iPad off USB port) cables given with purchase interchangable for these 2 devices?
    Thanks!

Yes, the cables work the same. It is an Apple proprietary 30 pin connector.
The chargers are different. The iPhone/iPod charger is 5 watt. The iPad charger is 10 watt. But you can use the iPad charger with iPhones/iPods because it is self limiting.

  • Need confirmation on Windows Mobile Device compatibility for Fiori

    Hello Experts,
Can you please confirm if SAP Fiori application is compatible in Windows Mobile OS 7.X/8/X devices? In  http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1935915 , I am not seeing any mention about Windows Mobile Devices. We need to know if SAP Fiori application can be run in any browser in windows mobile devices and if there SAP Fiori client in available in Windows App Store. Please help us in getting this information.
    Thanks,

    Hello Krishna,
Thanks for the prompt response. So, after seeing the comments, should I come to a conclusion, as of now Fiori is not supported on Windows Mobile Devices and if my understanding is correct, are you aware of any tentative timeframe when we can expect Windows Mobile device compatibility for Fiori? The reason is we are looking for a customized Fiori application for Windows Mobile Device, and was looking to check Fiori compatibility for the same.
    Regards!

Right now, the SAP Fiori Client appliction doesn't work with SMP. With SMP 3 SP03 which was released last week (Ramp-up customers only, sorry), there is an updated proxy that supports Fiori access from a Kapsel application (the application would need to onboard with SMP and that's not supported with the Fiori Client today).
The next release of the Fiori Client will have support for SMP and more. Next on my todo list is a blog post that talks about SMP and Fiori. You should find all of your questions answered there. Expect it next week.
Yes, we plan on supporting Windows 8.1. Right now, Cordova on Windows 8.1 doesn't support some of the things Fiori Client does. We're working with the Fiori team, the Cordova dev team and Microsoft to work through all of those issues. No definitive timeline, but it is something we want to support

  • JSF Cross Browser Compatibility

In reading about JSF I find no promise for cross browser compatibility. Am I to assume that this has been missed because
    i. JSF is a specification and not an implementation and I should be looking for the implementation to make that promise.
ii. it's basically to hard to promise this.
iii. I didn't look hard enough.
I am guessing it's a (i) with the likely hood of (ii) to follow. But I would be interested on any feed back that anyone cares to add. For example, a implementation that is trying to promise this.

In my opinion, the JSF specification (or better, any specification) can only refer to other specifications, but never to a concrete software product. Consider a sentence like:
JSF 1.0 is compatible with IEWhat could that mean? Some possibilities:
    (1)     As it happened, until now, we did not stumble over a
faces application that broke when run on our Faces
reference implementation (version 1_1_01) in a
WSAD 5.0 container in combination with IE 5.5
            with patch 12345 on Windows NT4 SP6 patch 98765.
(To breake means to produce a result not legitimized
by the spec, or to produce no result when one is
expected, at least not in a reasonable time.
Breakdowns caused by power failure or other
reasons outside the scope of the spec to be ignored)Well, not worth any further comment.
    (2)     Implementations of JSF 1.0 Spec will not brake
on any faces application when run in a
WSAD 5.0 container in combination with IE 5.5
            with patch 12345 on Windows NT4 SP6 patch 98765
(To breake means ...)That is ok... if you have just this combination of components and will never change. Keep in mind that (2) does not promise
anything if you use IE5.5 patch 12345a (and the saying is, there have been several patches to IE ;-)
    (3)     Implementations of JSF 1.0 Spec will not brake
on any faces application when run in any container
            in combination with IE 5.5
            with patch 12345 on Windows NT4 SP6 patch 98765.
(To breake means ...)Same as (2)
    (4)     Implementations of JSF 1.0 Spec will not brake
on any faces application when run in any container
in combination with IE 6.0 on any platform with
            any patches.
(To breake means ...)Maybe what is intended, just impossible to promise. First, such a bold statement about some software can not be proven.
Second, even if you have gained good confidence by thorow testing, who knows which future changes Microsoft will apply to IE 6.0 (via patches, which offen not only correct bugs, but also introduce new and maybe incompatible features)
    (5)     Implementations of JSF 1.0 Spec will not brake
on any faces application when run in any JSP 1.2
or higher container in combination any broser
            which supports:
               - HTML 4.0.1
               - JavaScript 1.3
               - CSS 1.0
where IE 6.0 is a browser which supports these
three standards on any platform with any patches.
(To breake means ...)It's getting better. But why, for heavens sake, should a JSF specification make a statement about the compliance of IE with HTML 4.0.1, JavaScript 1.3 and CSS 1.0? I think it would be the job of Microsoft to declare the compatibilty of their products with standards (if any applies, whatsoever).
Therefore, lets get rid of these and we have:
    (6)     Implementations of JSF 1.0 Spec will not brake
on any faces application when run in any JSP 1.2
or higher container in combination any broser
            which supports:
               - HTML 4.0.1
               - JavaScript 1.3
               - CSS 1.0
(To breake means ...)Nearly finished, just a little bit wordy. It is (nearly) obvious what 'to breake' means. And that it is common wisdom that software breakes, not some specification (Or, as Bertrand Meyer put it, Bubbles don crash. Specifications may be contradictory or fail to describe an algorithm, but never crash). Common wisdom removed gives:
    (7)     Implementations of JSF 1.0 need a JSP 1.2 container
and a browser capable of HTML 4.0.1, JavaScript 1.3
and CSS 1.0That's it. Specs exist for two reasons. First, to be discussed and thought about. Second, to be implemented. (To the supporters of agile methods: of course you can reverse the sequence ;-). Therefore, specs should be as short and concise as possible, omitting any useless blabla. If the specs are sufficently precise and of moderate complexity, we can even try to prove the compatibility of the specifications. 'COMPATIBLE WITH IE' is advertisement, not tech talk.
Conclusion: Mixing up specifications and implementaions is generally a bad thing. Exception: All sentences where a specification and a implementation are mentioned together should have the form:
Implementation X does [not] conform to specification Y
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have a follow up question, just inspired by yours. It does not especially concern JSF, but web pages in general.
Some time ago, I stumbled over quite a few web sites with big red eye catchers:
    OPTIMIZED FOR INTERNET EXPLORER!!!
And really, they did not look good on Netscape Navigator. Now, my question is, what do you think when you hit such a page? My first thoughts (it's long ago) have been:
        - Oh, nice designers. They really care for the majority of people,
          my neighbor uses an IE.
        - They just skiped the work for other browsers and sell this as an
optimization. And I didn't get it. Very clever.
        - Poor Guys. Probably they had no other browser at hand.
        - Obviously they had publish this tremendously important information
under pressure, no time to also optimize for others browsers.Wolfgang Oellinger

Just installed Forte as a Simple Server on a Digital UNIX (v4.0d) box (being
a VMSbot it was much easier than I thought). We want to use it to interface

  • Cross platform upgrade question between Photoshop CS5/CS6 and multiple Windows/Mac computers

    Hello,
I'm currently using a Windows laptop and PC running Photoshop CS5 from a Student license I got in college. I am considering moving to an Apple laptop so I was looking at the cross platform update question on the forum that led me here: Order product | Platform, language swap
It's not really clear if I will be eligible for the upgrade, and Adobe support chat sent me to the forum, and that page sends me back to where I started to see if I am eligible. I would prefer to purchase the upgrade outright, rather than pay for the new monthly subscription model.
If I am eligible for a swap/upgrade to Apple CS6, will I still be able to use CS5 on my Windows PC?
    Thanks.

I don't have a definitive answer, but I have a feeling that a student teacher version is not eligible for an upgrade discount.  You own the CS5 perpetual license, and can install it on two computers at the same time as CS6, CC etc.  That will be the case in perpetuity.  (not sure why I didn't just type 'forever' back there, or alert the cliche police 'Going forward')
Photoshop CS6 Extended will cost you just shy of US$1600 according to this Amazon page  The non extended version does not give you the 3D tools, and Photoshop CC comes as the full extended version as standard.  If you got the Photoshop / Lightroom Photography plan at a mere $10 a month, the price of CS6 would keep you subscribed for > three years.  Photoshop CC has a lot of wonderful features CS6 does not have, and will never have, and CC will be be constantly updated 'in perpetuity'. ;-)  $10 a month!  Heck, what's not to like about that?!!!

  • "Invalid cross-device link" when building with archiso

I'm trying to build a custom Arch bootable disk using archiso. In the final steps I get a long list of cp errors as such:
cp: cannot create hard link ‘work/root-image/root/.zshrc’ to ‘work/i686/root-image/root/.zshrc’: Invalid cross-device link
I'm invoking build.sh in ~/archdiag as root after copying the files from /usr/share/archiso/configs/releng/.
All I've found via search is a reference to creating hard links between partitions. This is all being performed in ~/archdiag on a btrfs subvolume containing my /home folder.
My packages in packages.both are currently almost completely vanilla. Only things added are kdebase and pulseaudio.
    Why is this failing?

Sorry, If I have posted this thread it´s because the solution given to the same problem I did not solution my problem.
I forgot to tell you the line where I get the problem:
    res=db.open(NULL,"C:\\mydb.db",NULL,DB_BTREE,DB_RDONLY,0);
After this line, res takes the value 22. I've tried with all the combinations of slash ('/', '//', '\' and '\\'), and If I try to open a file that doesn´t exist, I get the same erro (res=22).
Another thing I tried is not to open, but to create the db, (flag DB_CREATE) but I get the same problem again.
I'm trying to use Berkeley db from an application developed on Borland C++ Builder in windows XP.

  • Cross-platform compatibility?

    Not addressed in product specs:
How does Muse handle cross-platform compatibility?
    Does it use HTML5 features?
How does it handle audio and video?
Can it generate a 'functioning' contact form?

Muse handles output for most desktop browsers well.
    Muse only produces HTML5.
Muse does not import audio or video files unless you paste code into this 'codeless' design tool.
Muse only produces client side javascript. It offers no server side scripting (contact forms, comment areas, user account registration, password protection, e-commerce). If you want that, you'll need to paste code into this "codeless" design tool.
It is possible to find more mature web design programs.

  • X2-10GB-ZR compatibility question

    Hi All,
On the web site it says
Cisco X2-10GB-ZR: Supports link lengths of up to about 80 km on SMF. This interface is not part of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard but is built according to Cisco optical specifications.
I have a need to connect my 4507 chassis with the X2-10GB-ZR module to a Nortel switch at another site. Can anyone tell me if the Cisco ZR module is standards compliant, Nortel claim theirs to be, but don't want to waste a lot of money on a module that won't communicate ?
    Many thanks

Seeing that most of these modules are manufactured by a couple of major optics module vendors, I would assume they will interoperate.  I looked at Nortel's ZR XFP specs and they look very similiar in optical parameters.  From what I can gather, the IEEE has not ratified a ZR spec: 80km, 1550nm, SMF, so vendors developed one based on the SONET optics.
To put your mind at ease, you may want to contact Cisco (or a partner) to see if they can provide you a loaner, or try before you buy option.  This way you can test the solution for interoperability.  I know in the past they had these types of programs to offer their customers.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPod Camera Connector compatibility question

    Hello!
Well, I'm thinking about buying the Camera connector for trips/etc when I don't have my Powerbook, but have my 30gig Video.
I've looked at the iPod Camera connector compatibility site
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html
and it doesn't list my camera - the Nikon Coolpix 5200. It lists the 3200, 4200, and S1, which is for the most part an updated 5200. The 4200 is exactly the same apart from the resolution - 4 megapixels.
It notes that those are the ones that Apple has TESTED - not neccessarly the only ones that will work. My camera does have a Mass Storage AND a PTP mode - both supported by Apple.
Just curious if anyone else has tried a 5200 with the connector - and if it worked fine? If not, is there a better connector?
Also - apple mentions that media readers may or may not be supported. Any way to find out which? Is there a list like the one above?
    Thanks,
    Dan
PS: wasn't there some way to do this with a 20gig Clickwheel? I know there's a photo import extra - although it may need a third party connector.
    15" Powerbook G4 (May 2005 ed), iMac DV (9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1G Ram, 192 (iMac)

If your camera supports PTP and/or Mass Storage, it should work...

Also, you need an iPod photo/with color display or an iPod with video for use with the Camera Connector.

  • 3G - 4S Compatibility Questions

I've had my iPhone 3G for almost 3 years and now want to upgrade to the new 4S.  I have a couple of questions concerning compatibility between my current phone and the 4S:
Is the charger/docking connector compatible?  I use this not only for syncing and charging, but also to connect to my iHome speaker device.  I don't want to have to replace the latter as well as all my cables (including the charging cable for my car).
Is the new Bluetooth 4.0 compatible with my current Bluetooth 2?  I pair not only with headsets, but also with my car.
    Thanks.

No, my statement is correct.  Read the first 4 words if the sentence,  The APPLE cable is still compatible.  Older 3rd party docks may not be.
Although the 1st gen iPhone and iPod touch had FireWire charging capability in the dock connector for compatibility with older cables and docks, the supplied cable was USB and the same as current.  Only the 1st gen iPods (circa 2001) were Firewire only.
