10GB SFP+ Direct Attached cables between 2 servers (crossover, support?)

Yes,
It is supported. If for some reason it does not work reboot the server. Best would be to get the cables from Intel as well.

I am trying looking everywhere for this answer.
I am speccing out new servers and plan on have a direct connection between 2 of them. They are going to be sharing a lot of data together. I would like to have them connected via 10GB SFP+ adapters using direct attach copper. Basically using the copper as a crossover.
Is this supported? The plan is to have an Intel X520-DA1 single port adapter (PCIe card, not mezzanine) in each server.

  • Crossover cable between Servers - routing traffic

Can someone help me out please.
I have two servers of which oracle is on one and colfusion on
the other. Data cf requests is coming from a public network. Each
is part of a workgroup. I want the traffic to be routed through a
crossover cable which is not the primary connection.
Server1 - Coldfusion 7 installed. CF Application installed.
Server2 - Oracle database installed. CF Application accessing
    this server.
Server 1 and 2 have a LAN connection and also a crossover
    cable.
The ip addresses are as follows:
    Server2: Oracle Public 111.1.1.1
    Server2: Cross-Over 222.22.22.3
    Server1:Coldfusion: Public 111.1.1.2
    Server1: Cross-Over 222.22.22.4
There is an Oracle CF data source pointing to Server2
How do I get coldfusion to route its' requests from server2
    via the crossover cable.
Currently the LAN public connection is the primary route
between both servers althought the cross over cable has been
    connected.
Is what I am asking possible?
    JIM

Oracle, which is on server2 is binded with the ip address of
    Server2: Oracle Public 111.1.1.1
when creating the tns service name.
I create the system dsn using the ODBC Data source
Administrator and this picks the tns service name which is binded
with the ip address Oracle Public 111.1.1.1.
When creating the coldfusion data source traffic is directed
through the public route because Oracle is binded with the server
    ip address.
If there was a way I could get Oracle to bind the service
name with the crossover ip then my problem would be solved I think.
    Would anyone have any ideas?

  • Mirroring two ESX Servers with direct attached arrays

Hi, am new to the forum so please forgive if I commit any faux pas
We have two HP DL585 servers (amd opteron) with Direct attached storage arrays (attached via scsi cable) We would like to create a VM environment using ESX 3.5 (this is whats available to us - packaged) We also have all the vmware tools available to us but no other budget to spend on NAS\SAN's
Is there a way to create a mirror between the two machines (and arrays so to speak) so that failover is possible if one goes down or something similar - I think HP storageworks storage mirroring does this but does VMware have anything build in to do the job?
we will be installing the ESX build on the local hard disks(mirrored) and the VM slices on the array (raid 5).  Also the arrays are seen as another local disk on the server. Would Vmotion help or what could we put in place here?. Thanks
Alternatively, what is a good design to follow with the hardware we have? I'm finding it hard to get examples of VMware environments on the web. Thanks in advance

    Hello,
    I'm searching a switch that does support 10G-Ethernet RJ45 (10GBASE-T) and direct attached SFP+ Twinax (10GBASE-CR).
I do not have big requirements, but it should be as cheap as possible.

Would like to connect an SFP+ port to 10GBASE-T port?
Maybe a media converter is enough for your demand.

  • UCS direct attach to NetApp in Flexpod

    Hello Experts,
We have a new project  which is based on Flexpod design and needs a direct attach between the FI 6248  and NetAPP storage.(Without a Fabric Switch N5K or MDS)
We had concern if Cisco  has validated this design.Or else if there is CVD(Cisco Validated Design) based  on Direct attach of UCS with NetAPP storage. Also if there is/are any constraints  / limitations that must be considered in such a direct attach  design
Is there any document (CVD) by Cisco or NetApp which details the diagram/configuration steps and other relevant information for the direct attach between UCS FI and Netapp storage.
FYI: The architecture will be like this
    2 FI6248
    1 5108 Chassis
    1 B200m2 and 1 b200m3 Blade
    2 2104 IOM
No Fabric Switch between FI and NetApp storage.
An early response will be very much appreciated and a useful doc with details.

  • UCS C240 M4 with Cisco UCS VIC1227 VIC MLOM - Dual Port 10Gb SFP+

    Hi All,
Have a few UCS C-series questions:
If I have a UCS C240 M4 rack server with Cisco UCS VIC1227 VIC MLOM - Dual Port 10Gb SFP+, but do not have fabric interconnect(s), I cannot use the UCS VIC1227 for anything, can I? The VIC ports HAVE to be connected to the FI(s) in order to be integrated with the UCS Manager. There is no local UCS manager software running on the server itself, is there?
It is useless to have this card in the server without the FI(s), isn’t it?
The OS that is going to be installed on the server is not going to see those 10GB ports on the VIC, isn’t it?
And if there are no additional PCIe NICs installed in the server, I am stuck with the two 1GB onboard NICs, is that correct?
    Any input is appreciated.

do not have fabric interconnect(s), I cannot use the UCS VIC1227 for anything, can I?
The VIC 1227 can be used to integrate the server with UCSM, but that does NOT mean that is its unique function... the VIC 1227 is a CNA card that can be used whether your server is in standalone mode (no Fabric Interconnects) or integrated with UCSM.
If the server is not connected to a Fabric Interconnect (FI), it still has CIMC (Cisco Integrated Management  Controller) which can be configured by attaching a monitor to the server and a keyboard, press F8 when you see the Cisco logo and then you can configure the IP, subnet, gateway, NIC mode and others... this may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHQBvwO7pUU

It is useless to have this card in the server without the FI(s), isn’t it?
It is NOT useless to have the card in the server without the FIs, having the servers integrated only allows you to take advantage of the flexibility of Service Profiles but the VIC card still has the same capabilities whether you have an FI or not.
The OS that is going to be installed on the server is not going to see those 10GB ports on the VIC, isn’t it?
    See above
And if there are no additional PCIe NICs installed in the server, I am stuck with the two 1GB onboard NICs, is that correct?

  • 10Gb SFP for UTP?

I need to build a new 3850 switch which requires some server to be connected to a few 10Gb ports which i need to buy the 3580-nm-4-10Gb module for the first time. Was tying to build up a BOM and finding the correct SFP to buy together with the module from this site
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/interfaces-modules/transceiver-modules/data_sheet_c78-455693.html
I didn't see any 10Gb SFP for copper, something similar to the GLC-T sfp for the 1Gb slot, the most relevant one would be the Twinax copper cable which comes with both ends of the sfp with the cable attached together. Now is this something that we buy to inter connect to server's 10Gb port?
Not too sure about the 10Gb SFP to connect to a server but if you guys and give me some of the example of the model that people would use that would be great!
    Cheers,
    Ben

    Hi Benny,
That's interesting. I thinkg the Twinax active copper cable (with SFPs at both ends) is the way to go. But it depends on the interface on the other end - the server. The 10G server interfaces I've seen are normally having an SFP port, but... your have to check what the situation is at your end.
In this case though, I guess the only factor to go for the copper cable would be the price. If you have SFPs at both ends of the connection, you can go optical. It's more robust and reliable, and it's cheeper these days.

  • Connections between servers using CSS VIP?

In our new pre-production environment we have several servers connected to a 3750 switch, which is then connected to a CSS 11503. Upstream the CSS is then connected to an ASA firewall pair. The CSS VIPs are 10.22.1.0/24 on the "outside" and the servers have 10.21.1.0/24 addresses on the inside. The CSS inside & server 3750 switchports are all on the same VLAN. There is no PAT/NAT configured (except for the VIP being translated to a chosen server IP I suppose).
Whilst the clients will connect to the servers via the VIPs what we want is for each server to also be able to talk to other servers via a VIP. This is because some of the servers provide a service (LDAP actually) that we would like to be load balanced.
Now, what is curious, is that *this works* in our production environment where the servers are *directly* attached to the 8 port switch module in the CSS. However in this new environment, where the 3750 is between the servers and the CSS, it doesn't (actually you can ping the VIP sucessfully but nothing else works).
I have seen other postings on NetPro where people are trying similar things, like: http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Networking%20Solutions&topic=Application%20Networking&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Ddisplay_location%26location%3D.1dd81312 and http://forums.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Emerging%20Technologies&topic=Content%20Networking&CommCmd=MB?cmd=display_location&location=.1dd72fd0
The relevant CSS config I think (there are lots more services etc but they are all similar) is:
    circuit VLAN1
    ip address 10.21.1.100 255.255.255.0
    circuit VLAN2
    ip address 10.22.1.1 255.255.255.0
    keep alive ssokeepalive
    type http
    keepalive port 7777
    uri "/sso/status"
    keepalive frequency 10
    keepalive maxfailure 2
    tcp-close fin
    active
    service pulpldp001sso
    ip address 10.21.1.6
    keepalive type named ssokeepalive
    active
    content SSO
    vip address 10.22.1.12
    protocol tcp
    port 7777
    application http
    url "/*"
    advanced-balance cookie
    add service pulldp001
    active
i.e. VIP 10.22.1.12 will be directed to the server 10.21.1.6 (only the one shown above).
Q1) My first question is: is server to server communication via an outside VIP possible?!
Q2) Given that this seems to work our production environment without the 3750s any idea what areas of config could be wrong on the 3750 or the servers? (we've tried default routes of both the 3750 and the ISS inside address but that hasn't worked). Note the ping from a server works but when we try, say, "telnet 10.22.1.12 7777" that doesn't connect.
Q3) Let's assume that the servers run more than one service, e.g. an HTTP and an LDAP service. If a server can communicate with another server using its VIP, will it work from one server up to the CSS/VIP and back to itself? (of course it may or may not actually return to itself depending on the load etc)
I can provide full configs on Monday if required.
Hope these aren't dumb questions! Many thanks!
    Simon
PS. the CSS is running 7.50 at the moment but could upgrade to 8.2 if required

Thank you Adedayo - that appears to have done the trick! I can't believe it: one little keyword!
I have to say, even once you told me the answer I still didn't find the Cisco content config manual very helpful on this point (perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place?).
Note: we're not currently doing any PAT on the CSS so don't have any source groups set up - perhaps most people do and so don't have the same problem.
I'll get chance to report back on some proper testing next week and promise to update this conversation.
Adedayo: sorry, I wanted to flag your post as solving my problem once I was sure next week but now the tick box has gone - if you reply again I'll flag that! I appreciate you taking the trouble to post.
One final question: do you have a situation where you use a VIP from a server to potentially connect back to itself? If so, does it work OK? (e.g. if you have a webserver can you connect to the content VIP that it belongs to?)
    Simon

  • Communication between servers on different FIs

Just want to verify communication between UCS servers on same chassis but having active vNICs on different FIs (Diagram attached). I suppose all commuication between server-A & server-B will happen through Layer 2 switch as server-A will generate an ARP request for Server-B, that will be passed over to FI-A and then to L2 switch down to FI-B, where server-B will respond back with it's MAC that will then be passed to Server-A via FI-B to L2 switch to FI-A.I don't expect any traffic between servers A & B be routed via firewall? Is there anything I need to be careful about in this design? Going forward we will have multiple subinterfaces on the firewall for different VLANs and all servers will use Firewall as default gateway.

you may want to look at the throughput of your firewall for server-server traffic in different VLANs. If your L2 switch is 10G but your firewall is only 1G then you could have a potential bottle neck.

  • The cable between the logic board and the 3G board  was removed can I convert it to a Wifi only?

I have a Ipad 2 3g. someone detached the cable between the logic board and the 3G board can I convert it to a Wifi only?

The ipads that have 3g have an extra section attached to the logic board by a glued on wire. I bought this at a tag sale. Someone was apparently trying to repair their iPad and they did not know that when you removed that glued strip attaching the 3g antenna to the logic board you would never be able to re-atach it again later. So basicaly my 3g logic board is now in two pieces. the main logic board with wifi and the cdma 3g antenna. Now their is no differnce between the logic boards in either wifi only or wifi and 3g devices. I attempted to restore the device with the ios for wifi only, because there are 3 different ios versions depending on if you have wifi only wifi 3g with SIM card, or wifi 3g cdma.

  • Backup Oracle VMs using a direct attached tape library

    Hello all,
I'm in the process of getting a specification for a new Oracle VM host server which will run OEL VMs and host Oracle databases (10g and others), currently we're looking at getting an HP DL580 and a MSL6000 tape library using SAS connectors.
Regarding backups, I understand that Oracle VM Server doesn't have a built in mechanism for backups so would need to use a backup method from within the virtual machines.
Is it possible, and advisable, to use a tape library directly attached to the host server and use an OEL VM running Symantec Netbackup which will then backup the other VMs, if so, are there any issues or gotchas I should be aware of?
If it is possible to do this, do I connect the tape library to the VM by editing the VM config file and add the tape library devices as 'phy:/dev/xxx'
    Thanks in advance,
    Martin.

NDMP is for backing up NAS platforms.
Does your backup software support "LAN-Free" backup ? Typically enterprise backup software like Netbackup, TSM, Networker require a special license/agent that gets loaded on server where you are going to implement LAN-Free backups. Without that software/license servers will be fighting for tape resources and it will be a mess (if it works at all). Also you want to use dedicated HBA or port on dual HBA for tape traffic, do not mix tape and disk traffic on the same HBA/port. In big shops people configure dedicated "tape" VSANs but that would be an overkill for your current environment.

  • FAS3220 and FAS2240 direct attach on fabric interconnect 6296UP

    Hello everybody
    I have the following architecture
    1 Cisco Catalyst 6509-E
    1 Cisco Catalyst 3560-x
    2 Fabric Interconnect 6296UP
    1 FAS 3220 (principal storage)
    1 FAS2240 (vault backup)
    1 chasis cisco UCS 5108
5 blade servers Cisco UCS B200M3
    Firmware version: 2.2(3c)
Fabric Interconnect are direct attach on fabric interconnect 6296up and the ports are configurated as FC storage ports
    My question is the following:
Can I zoning fabric interconnect with FAS3220 and FAS2240?
Can I present LUNS of FAS2240 and FAS3220 at the same time on the same boot policy, same san boot policy, and the same organization?
    Thanks for your help

Well, even if that was possible. You're accounting for a critical failure - i.e. a failure of two redundant devices (both 3220s, which I would have assume would be running in a cluster ... or 7mode).
While just upstream you have a single cat 6500 - which would be a single point of failure.
Logic would dictate to account for a single device failure all across the path before looking into multi-device failure.

  • Message between servers

    Hi,
I am new to this JMS, after reading online and a sample application I got an idea how to configure JMS with resin and Jboss.
My question now is, how to send and receive messages between servers ? I have created some sample applications and just sent and received messages within the same server.
How can we achieve sending messages across servers ?
    Thanks in advance.
    ~ SK

    Hi Elad,
We did XI-XI communictions a bit different, we approached it as a B2B scenario. We defined a Party for the sending XI system and we created an abstract interface with the Idoc messagetype (because you need on both sides the same interface name/namespace and we use naming conventions).
In the receiver agreement of the sending XI system you have to replace the party and service name with the ones you have did setup on the receiving XI.
I hope this helps you in the right directions
    Cheers,
    Frank
