  • Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10-Disk space question

I am going to install Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10 (x86). I need some advice on Disk space allocations. Altogether i've 10GB allocated for both Solaris and Oracle in VMware. My current allocation is this:
    / ----------->6177mb
    swap---------->1024mb
    /tmp ----------> 400mb
    /export/home------->2570mb
Is this enough to install a Basic Oracle Database? I am going to use it only for learning purposes.

It is Ok to start, but I suggest you to read the:
    Oracle® Database Installation Guide
    10g Release 2 (10.2) for Solaris Operating System (x86)
    Part Number B15697-01
for further requirements and a complete step by step guide.

  • 10gR2 under Solaris 10: Error creating sample database

I am attempting to install 10gR2 on a Sun Ultra 10 Sparc workstation running Solaris 10. I successfully configured the ASM drives and loaded the software, and am now attempting to install the actual database software.
While the installer is running the Database Configuration Assistant, the second "recommended" configuration program, I get an error almost halfway through that says "ORA-19879: error reading backup piece". Looking through the logs kept by the Assistant, I find this entry:

I couldn't find anything wrong in "example.dmp", and I couldn't find "change_on_install" in the directory listed, even while the error window was still on the screen. Most of the errors in the log following this fragment have to do with tablespace EXAMPLE not being there.
Someone else with a similar problem solved it by installing the database software without the sample databases. I'll give that a try tomorrow, but I'd still like to know where I'm even supposed to look to find the problem I had above.
    Thanks,
    Mike McCormick

Okay, I've found at least one source for this problem. There is a script called mkplug.sql in the demo/schema directory that had a line that began "host imp .....". 'imp' is in the db_1/bin directory, which the PATH variable does not yet point to.
So, my question now is whether I should change "host imp..." to "host $ORACLE_HOME/bin/imp..." in all the files it appears in (sted_mkplug.sql and sdoepsgv.sql, as well as mkplug.sql), or add $ORACLE_HOME/bin to the PATH variable manually.
What I'm going to try is to deinstall the database, scrap the directories, then reload the software only. After that, I'll edit the files in the demo directory and use dbca to create the demo directories.

  • Oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10 - Zoned Machine getting ORA-27102 Errors

Getting Memory issues in Solaris 10. I have configured the database to have only 2GB of SGA, but still getting ORA-27102 and also when we look at top command it seems all the memory is not available. Any help in this regard would be helpful. Is anything special needs to be done in zones ?

  • DBCA (10gR2) in solaris 10 doesn't create DB, has 0 errors

    Hi,
I have oracle 10.2.0.1 installed on a Solaris 10 SPARC box, and am trying to create a database. When I installed Oracle, I originally opted to create a new database, but when it got to the DBCA section, the installer seems to pause with the results stating it's "in progress...". I stopped the installer, and cancelled the install. On checking the logs, there were no errors, it just seems to stop (even if I leave it for 14+ hours) with the last lines of the log being:
INFO: Configuration assistant "Oracle Net Configuration Assistant" succeeded
    INFO: Command = /export/home/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_3/bin/dbca -progress_only
-createDatabase -templateName General_Purpose.dbc -gdbName orcl -sid orcl -sy

    on NO_VALUE
Then I installed Oracle without creating a db thinking I could create a database alone with DBCA. The installer completed successfully, but dbca isn't completing at all. It launches fine, I can progress through all the steps/panes no problems. When I get to the last pane to select db creation options, I have "Create Database" and "Generate Database Creation Scripts" checked, then I click Finish. A window opens with a summary, I click OK and that window closes. Then nothing happens. Nothing at all. No errors in the terminals, and I'm looking at the last pane of the DBCA as if it didn't do anything at all. I can uncheck the creation options and click Finish again, but I get no notification windows, and the app just seems to be open, but not doing anything. I can "Cancel" out of it though. No scripts directory is added either.
Any suggestions on how I can create a db??
    Thanks!

    Hello there,
I know this topic is quite old now but maybe my solution would help someone else...
I met the exact same problem than user10494040. I'm running Debian Etch (but the problem was the same with a Lenny) which was installed from a netinstall CD, and on which I've met all the prerequisites given by Oracle ( [Configuring Linux for the Installation of Oracle Database 10g|http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gdb/install/linuxpreinst/linuxpreinst.htm] )
It was impossible for me to successfully complete the Oracle installation when the database creation option was selected in OUI, as well as the Basic Installation or the Advanced one was choosen.
I've done many tests and each time I unselected the database creation option, the installation completed successfully. So I decided to try to create my database using DBCA in command line, using the command automatically generated by OUI and on which the installation froze, just adding to it the -silent option and removing the -progress_only one.
Note :_ if your installation really freeze on the database creation command, you can also find the DBCA command automaticaly generated in the log file of the installation (available in the folder oraInventory/logs/installActions####.log where #### is the date you attempted to make your installation).
For example, with the command given by user10494040 it would looks like :
    # dbca -silent -createDatabase -templateName General_Purpose.dbc -gdbName orcl -sid orcl -sysPassword 052b3cccab83184dd1ba5e728aa1ff1e189a90088c2da70291 -systemPassword 053e5dc6ab23642c16821c915b858ddc23d87c4a357e140d8e -sysmanPassword 05b123a3abe32968b37230926a9bfc13f4d4ef5e52f01e095d -dbsnmpPassword 058be1aeaba392a9299e7d3d8215720402fe045d76a03d4506 -emConfiguration LOCAL -datafileJarLocation /export/home/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_3/assistants/dbca/templates -datafileDestination /export/home/oracle/product/10.2.0/oradata/ -responseFile NO_VALUE -characterset WE8ISO8859P1 -obfuscatedPasswords true -sampleSchema true -oratabLocation /export/home/oracle/product/10.2.0/Db_3/install/oratab -recoveryAreaDestination NO_VALUE
Of course, launch this command loggued as oracle, and make sure your $ORACLE_HOME is well set.
This trick worked for me, I hope that would help someone else :-)

  • ORA-27102: out of memory. Faild to install oracle 10gR2 on Solaris 10

Hi, I want to install oracle on my solaris machine. I have 2.5G RAM and more than 5G swap file. But the ORA-27102: out of memory error occurred at installing the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant step(Copying database files Creating and starting Oracle instance).
    The only warnings bellow:

Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed <<<<
Problem: The kernel parameters do not meet the minimum requirements (see above).
What's the reason and how may I resolve it?
    Thanks!

I set some kernel parameters like: set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295 and so on. Restart the computer and run dbca+ and configure in advance mode. There's a stage require the size of flash_recover_segment of which the default size number is 2048M. WOW, out of memory on my pc of course.
So I think it's the parameter value during the installation progress bring on the ORA-27102 problem. However, during the first installation, there's no prompt for me to enter the parameter; or I didn't see.

  • Cold backup of High Availability DB 10gR2 in SOLARIS 8 SPARC

    Hi
I want to know the procedure of taking Cold backup in Solaris 8 SPARC in
    High Availability Environment.
Any reference document will be helpful.
    Thanks in advance.
    Renuka

That seems to be a contradiction in terms, high availibility and cold backup. When you do a cold backup the database is down and not available. In a primary - standby configuration, you could switch the standby to primary, shutdown the (former) primary and perform a cold backup of it.

The permissions for OCR disks on both the nodes were "root:dba" and the disks was accessible across the nodes.
I'm not sure why we got that error.
To over come it, I'm going as below:
    - rootdelete.sh on both nodes
    - rootdeinstall on node 1
    - uninstall using OUI
    - remove /var/opt/oracle/*
    - remove oracle_home
    - remove oraInventory
    - format the disks
    - reboot the nodes.
Just wanted to know if there's something else that should be done.
    thanks

I strongly advise against uninstalling Clusterware without first making a serious attempt to troubleshoot what went wrong and trying to fix the errors. If you unistall and retry without knowing what to do differently, you will have hardly any choice but to repeat the same steps that led to the errors in root.sh

That could be your error right there. The installation instructions say to put the voting disk in the dba group, but to put the cluster registry in the oinstall group. Quoting from page 4-7 of the Clusterware and RAC installation guide:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14205.pdf
    >
    – The voting disk is a partition that Oracle Clusterware uses to verify cluster
    node membership and status.
The voting disk must be owned by the oracle user, must be in the dba group,
and must have permissions set to 644. Provide at least 20 MB disk space for
    the voting disk.
    – The Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) contains cluster and database configuration
information for the RAC database and for Oracle Clusterware, including the
node list, and other information about cluster configuration and profiles.
The OCR disk must be owned by root, must be in the oinstall group, and
must have permissions set to 640. Provide at least 100 MB disk space for the
    OCR.
