11.2 ASM and IBM HACMP

Hi,
We are looking to upgrade our Oracle database server cluster from 10.2.0.3 to 11.2 this year. The 10.2.0.3 setup currently uses filesystems/datafiles and IBM's HACMP fails over to backup node.
I would like to convert everything to ASM but we don't want to purchase RAC. If I install the 11.2 Grid Infrastructure for a Standalone Server will I be able to failover ASM to the backup node via IBM HACMP?

Hi Tom,
Oracle Clusterware and ASM are free when used with an Oracle Database regardless of RAC. In other terms, you do not need to purchase a RAC option to use Oracle Clusterware or ASM free of charge. Hence, if you want to have a failover cluster to manage your DB in a failover manner, you could use Oracle Clusterware to do that. On http://otn.oracle.com/clusterware you will find more information regarding this setup.
The benefit for you would be: Once you have Oracle Clusterware, you can cluster ASM (all free of charge) and you would not need to fail it over using HACMP anymore. The professional version of this configuration is called Oracle RAC One node, available with 11.2. But for earlier versions, this setup might do. Note the support situation for this configuration, if you do not use RAC One Node as described, in Support Note 790189.1 You could even get rid of HACMP on these machines, since you plan on using ASM anyways.
If you choose to use HACMP to fail over ASM, you need to ask IBM whether they have a solution (agent) for that.

11r2 asm configuration on HACMP

Hi ,I have already configured 11gr2 asm setup on my one server.
Now i want to configure/convert this set up into hacmp ACTIVE PASIVE node .
So do i have to again install grid and oracle on second node ?
Requirement :Set up will look like :
IBM aix 7.1 HACMP active passive cluster with common asm storage

During first installation on node1 i chose +DISK1 for ASM SPFILE .
So when i will start installing ASM and starting instance it will ask me to provide a DISKGROUP(disk) to place ASM SPFILE but i have already used this disk for node1(member of +DISK1 dishgroup of NODE1)
1.So how this configuration will look like ?
2.where to place the new spfile of new ASM for node 2
3.How this new ASM on node 2 will detect the ASM storage and how it will use it ?
4.When 1st node will b down then who will come to knw that instance should be started on 2nd node and who will do this ?

Is it posssible to install two RACs with different version on one IBM HACMP

The version of HACMP is 5.4. The version of Oracle database can be 9i or 10g, or both are 10g.

We have an oracle 10g database configured with RAC. We also have an oracle 9i that is not configured with RAC. You mean that if I want to install another RAC on the HACMP, I need upgrade to 10g. Rigth?What i understand from your above point is : you want to configure your 9i database with IBM HACMP cluster, if its so then u need not have to upgrade to 10g or RAC i can straight away finish this task.
Contact your HACMP vendor for steup and technical documents for settingup HACMP on 9i database.
I think your doubt is now cleared.

How to synchronize PI service registry and IBM WSRR

Hello All,
In our current project we have developed one web service which resides in SAP CE and is registered in SAP PI Service Registry.
But our client has IBM websphere that acts as a middleware for all ther services (interfaces/web services)
Now, I need to understand how to synchronize SAP PI Service Registry with IBM WSRR (Websphere Services Registry and Repository)
What are the steps/configurations need to be performed at PI end and IBM WSRR end?

I am installing Grid infrastructure. On step 9 of 10 - execute script /u01/app/grid/root.sh for 2 VMs rac1 and rac2.
After run root.sh in rac1 successfully. I run root.sh in rac2 and get an error as below:

The runInstaller is in the first VM rac1. My question is:
Do any folk understand how to solve the script root.sh in rac2 problem ( 3 fails of ora.asm, ASM and Clusterware stack as above) ?

RFC calls with SAP JCO and IBM resource adapter for SAP - basic tuning

Hi experts,
we are working on a java portal connected to a backend system SAP by calling RFCs.
On our first integration tests, it appears to be quite slow fetching data from SAP by calling the remote functions from the custom portal. We are using SAP JCo 3.0.6 and IBM resource adapter for SAP 7.0.0.3 to integrate SAP with our portal.
Is there any basic tuning to achieve to improve performances or any hint of where to tune in SAP ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jamal,
I understand you have already checked performance issues in the SAP Server. We had some problems with certain RFC calls and it turned out to be a badly developed ABAP sentence.
I'd recommend you to use httpwatch or another tool to check the response times from the browser, so you can point accurately where the is.

mmmh. Did you compared the select count(*) from your_table; in the two cases.
If the result is not good and nobody has deleted rows between migration and your test, you migration need to be replayed.
Which migration did you select, Transportable database or exp/imp...?

Weblogic 8.1 App Server and IBM MQ Series 5.2 Issue

 I am trying to create a bridge between Weblogic 8.1 App Server and IBM MQ Series 5.2 and i am facing issues.
 Bridge works fine if i use QualityOfService="Atmost-once" and i am getting following error when i use
 QualityOfService="Duplicate-okay".

It is weird that nothing shows up in the log after you turned on the debug.
 Actually I knew somebody has run into the same problem once.
 The problem disappeared after he did something on the MQSeries side (like
 restart the system and something else). I did not know exactly what he did.
 I am not sure if that will help you but worth trying.
 If that does work either, I'd suggest that you contact the BEA Customer Support
 and somebody will look at it for you in depth.

1. What is the difference between JMS MQ and Native MQ? How to determine which one to use?Native MQ refers to a proprietary api provided by IBM in multiple languages including java so that applications running on these can communicate mq. IBM also provides JMS wrappers around this native api, so that a jms client can talk to mq using JMS API. This is called MQ JMS.
2. If native MQ can be used here, what are the steps to configure Native MQ on WLS in my situation?SOA suite provides a MQ Resource Adaptor which can be used to connect to MQ. The developers of this resource adapter would have used the native api to enable the adaptor to talk to MQ, so that you dont have to worry about it. However you will need to configure the properties of your local MQ ( qmgr , q name etc). This is done in the outbound connection pool properties of the resource adaptor.

Since your MQ installation is in a remote machine you will have to configure the following properties specific to your environment - hostname, port, server connection channel, along with the queue manager name and queue name
3. Do I need any foreign servers or message bridges to be configured?Not required for your case if you are using MQ Adaptor. Since MQ also provides a JMS transport , you would have required foreign servers if you have to use JMS Adaptor instead of MQ Adaptor. Native MQ is expected to be faster than MQ JMS as it doesn't have the extra JMS layer.

About ASM and SAN...

Hello Guys,
I have to implement 3 nodes RAC 10gR2 ob centOS4 operating system. I have study so many documents about rac instaltion and configurations. I have learn how to set the network requirements with private, public and virtual IPs and all other stuff. I have learn installtion of clusterware and database with cluster enable functionality.
BUT the storage options are still not clear to me. We have purchases SAN and we are planning to implement ASM for the storage. Now i want to know:
How many disk and disk partitions 3 node structure will require on SAN?
How ASM will access SAN, or you can say OS will access this shared storage?
Voting disk and OCR can not be store on sharted storage and need to be store on raw devices... what these raw device can be? How it can be access by all nodes?
Above three questions are disturbing me a lot. If they are clear to me the whole storage concept will be clear and i can implement RAC.
Please help me by answering the above 3 questions. I will be vert greatful to you.

There's no real answer to that! With Oracle generally, RAC or no RAC, the answer to how many disks you should have is "as many as possible". Partitioning is really up to you, too, depending on what you find easiest to manage. If you have a single SAN array, for example, comprised of 15 disks that you choose to partition into three or four logical volumes so that you can call one 'data', one 'redo', one 'OS', and one 'other' -that's entirely up to you, since Oracle could care less how you partition, what you call them or how many of them there are. Moreover, everything on every partition is being striped across those 15 disks anyway, so who cares?
I think, however, you might be thinking of the RAC-specific issues of the voting disk and the Oracle Cluster Registry. If you were using a cluster file system, they could be just two files on the file system, about 120M in size between them. Since you are going to use ASM and these two elements can't be stored inside an ASM array, you'll have to create two raw partitions for this purpose. The rest you then chop up for ASM's use.
It is NOT true, incidentally, that "Voting disk and OCR can not be store on sharted storage". By definition, the voting disk and OCR must be on shared storage! Indeed, raw partitions, ASM arrays and cluster file systems are ALL shared storage technologies. It just so happens that those two files can't use ASM... but raw or cfs are fine.
A raw partition is not, of course, intrinsically 'shared storage'... but if it's a raw partition on your SAN, to which all three of your nodes are physically attached, then it is shareable. It's shareable simply because three nodes can see it. And because there's no file system there with exclusive and blocking file locks, what one node does to a raw partition doesn't stop another node accessing it simultaneously (which is the definition of shared storage, of course).
How will ASM access SAN? By you partitioning the SAN into a number of logical volumes, each one of which will be kept raw, and you then declaring each such volume as a candidate disk. You'll wrap all candidate disks up into an ASM disk group... and then Oracle will write to that disk group and hence through to the underlying logical volumes. Which comes back to the original question: how many logical volumes should you create out of, say, a 15 disk LUN on a SAN?
Depends, as I said, on a lot of things, but for example RAID5 runs best when there are either 5 or 9 disks in the array (or did when last I looked at an EMC Clariion SAN!). So if your underlying RAID technology was going to be RAID5, you might well create 3 5-disk logical volumes on the one LUN. To let ASM use all 15 disks, you'd then create a 3-disk diskgroup (where 1 ASM disk = 1 SAN logical volume). On the other hand, you might want to keep some disks back for future storage, in which case a 1-disk ASM diskgroup representing a single 9-disk logical volume might be the go, with the remaining 6 disks on the LUN available for future expansion.
It's a complicated topic, unfortunately. You're dealing with physical storage which is already abstracted into logical volumes and then abstracted even further by wrapping those logical volumes up into ASM disk groups. You balance performance, expandability, management convenience, your SAN vendor's optimisation tricks and so on... and hopefully come out with something that works for you!
