11.3 Update freezes Podcasts

iTunes crashes when I try to update a subsciption, when I try to delete, when I try to download and anything else
the only thing still working I found was transfer of already downloaded file to Playlist
Has anybody found a remedy? I've been on the phone with the help desk yesterday for 5 hours. She did a lot of nice cleaning up and updating but iTunes didn't improve.

LOL
I'd say of no current importance
but seriously your assumption that an Apple developer is capable of messing up anything qualifies IMHO as blasphemy within the Apple Universe - Apple developers by definition are higher beings. Why else could the idea that the mess could be a fault of Apple never ever even entered the mind of the woman who worked away at cleaning up my Mac for 5 hours without success except in non-iTunes areas.
but really seriously now I think Apple is on track to revert to what it was before storming the market with iTunes - a highly sophisticated speciality for certain kinds of geeks.
all those prolls (short for proletarian in German) who dare to not be content with the crumbs from the high-ups tables are too much trouble and need to be disciplined. Podcast-Aficionados seem to be such a small bunch that they provide perfect training ground for how to silence people who insist that they are entitled to functioning programs instead of mysteries.

  • How can I make sure iTunes doesn't stop updating my podcasts

OK I'm subscribed to multiple podcasts, but I don't always get a chance to listen to them so some of them will stop updating and it says something like "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you haven't listened to any episodes lately".
How can I make sure it doesn't do that? When I do get to listen to my podcasts, I would really like it if they weren't 3 weeks old.
    Message was edited by: MacAttakk

someone made a script that fixes this. It seems to work for me. If you want it to do it automatically just make an iCal even for every 3 days or something that runs this script.

  • ITunes stops updating podcasts / iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?

    Hi,
My iTunes is set to automatically update podcasts and keep the last five episodes of each podcast.
However, iTunes appears to stop updating podcasts after several (five?) unwatched episodes and gives me an exclamation mark in the podcast overview. Clicking on that, I get the message: "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?"
This is not what I intend... and not  what I  told iTunes to do... (at least this my reading of the below settings)
This stopping is rather less then ideal: (1) if I am going away for two weeks, which I often do, I would still like to have the last five days of news, not the last five days of news back from the date I left, (2) I need to click update for approx. 20 podcast on regular basis, (3) my iPhone is synced to iTunes as soon as I come home, if iTunes does not have the podcasts downloaded, they are not copied over to the iPhone, and the iPhone will attempt to download the episodes via 3G next time I play the podcast on the go, (4) I am mainly using iTunes functions, such as smart playlists and podcasts, through another app (Plex, a fullscreen media player) and it is a pain to have to go to iTunes to manually do things. That is why this bothering me...
How can I get iTunes to behave as intended? (From reading through old posts I know that there is a Doug script adressing this problem, which I have just set up, but I would prefer to use internal settings if possible... maybe I am just missing a setting)
    Thank you for your ideas!

Thank you for the response, Roger!
OK, that's how it is then.
The iTunes podcasts settings should be reworded in that case because it suggest something different from what it does. And, of course, it would be ideal for Apple to make this more flexible and allow users to set up their podcast downloads in their way and not be so motherly (c'mon, Apple, your users are not as dumb as you think, and they have uncapped Internet connections these days anyway)...
Btw., for anyone interested, this is external script I am using now:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=updateexpiredpodcasts
Including the "cron job" setup here:
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/2011/12/updated-update-expired-podcasts-v2-2-and-l aunchd-project/
Cannot tell how well it works because I have just set it up, other members of the forum say it works for them...
If anyone knows of in-app solutions, please share...

  • Updater freezes. Shuffle corrupted. Please help.

Before I get started I'll try to be clear on a few things.
UPDATER VERSION IS IRRELEVANT. I've tried with three different versions.
ITUNES VERSION IS IRRELEVANT. This is unrelated to itunes.
Short story: Program problem disallowed safe shuffle removal. It was corrupted as a result. I can't restore the ipod because the updater freezes up.
Longer story: Because of program I tried to run off my shuffle and my schools computer setup, things got messed up and when I tried to eject it it wouldn't let me. So I removed it manually. The shuffle got corrupted and was unreadable.
Seemed like a minor problem since I could easily restore the Ipod. I knew I had lost my files but that wasn't too bad. However the updaters all freeze when the ipod is plugged in or if they start while it's plugged in.
Now instead of just getting an error message when I try to do anything with my ipod the computer seems to be treating it as though it were an empty cd drive or something.
I doubt I can fix things. If I can't can anyone direct me to a replacement form and tell me if I've somehow voided the warranty?

I fixed it myself. The restorer was freezing up but apprently there is a third party one.

It works great. it may help those of you who can't get the updater to recognize your ipod.

  • ITunes has stopped updating this podcast...

I'm curious if anyone has a fix for this ACTUAL iTUNES MESSAGE:
"iTunes has stopped updating this podcast becasue you have not listened to any episode recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?"
It seems crazy to me that iTunes would just stop updating my podcasts because I haven't listened in a while. It would be just as ridiculous if Tivo stopped recording TV shows because I haven't watched them in a while. It doesnt mean I dont want to listen/watch in the future.
    APPLE: FIX THIS!

Apple, count me as another user who wants you to do something different here. I would prefer to simply get a message that I haven't listened to a podcast in a while then not have it being downloaded. Especially now with advanced subscription settings that let us change the subscription on a per-podcast basis, this behavior should be changed. Maybe it's already in the queue?
    Suggested change:
Just warn with option to stop warning, but always continue to download as per subscription settings.
I have a number of podcasts that I'm "subscribed to" but I don't listen to as regularly as they are published. However when i'm going to hit the road, I want those episodes there, especially on my ipod. I don't want to have wait for them to all update!

  • ITunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened . .

I found an archived article from two years ago: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8453115 and have found subsequent articles talking about outboard solutions that I have tried and do not work. The problem continues to this day. Why doesn't Apple just fix this themselves?
Exact text of the message, as if it is a mystery: iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?
Yes. Yes. Permanently, yes. Stop asking the question.

Yes. Yes. Permanently, yes. Stop asking the question.
Although you may not like the way it's set up, Apple appears to have done this deliberately and therefore does not consider it broken. I suspect that they do it that way to conserve bandwidth.

  • ITunes has stopped updating my podcast, posted weekly

iTunes has stopped updating my podcast, posted weekly: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/kpfk-4-oclock-report-jon-wiener/id492010645
first one missing is Oct. 29, http://archive.kpfk.org/mp3/kpfk_141029_160001johnwiener.MP3
    http://archive.kpfk.org/xml/johnwiener.xml -- how can I fix this?

iTunes is not reading your feed at all because there is a parsing error in Episode 7:
    <item>
    <title>Episode 7 - How to Invade Africa</title>
    <link>http://thehistoryofpodcast.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/a-history-of-hannibal-episode- 7-how-to.html/link>
There is no '<' in the closing 'link' tag and this is wrecking the feed.

  • "Itunes has stopped updating your podcast" message -- is there away around?

When new podcasts are downloaded into Itunes, I transfer them straight to my ipod. I don't play them in Itunes.
As a result, I have to tell Itunes that I DO want to continue downloading new files - for every podcast to which I subscribe, on a recurring basis.
Seems to me that transferring the file shows signs of interest - same as playing.
Is there a way to set Itunes to treat a transfer to the ipod the same as playing it?

You're right, there is no way to turn off this asinine, infuriating feature. It's this kind of thing that drove me away from Windows and made me so happy when I got a Mac. I felt like I didn't have to fight the Windows Big Brother anticipating my needs and only allowing me to do things in a way that Windows wanted me to.
Anyways, there is a partial solution, although its pretty sad compared to how easy it would be if Apple included a little checkbox in the options menu that said "Do you want iTunes to stop downloading your podcasts if you listen to them in any other way than on iTunes, even if you listen to them on your (Apple) iPod?". Go to http://www.dougscripts.com and check out the NeedleDrop script. It will let you automatically play 1 second or so of each podcast in your directory. You can then tell iTunes to update your podcasts and it will retrieve all of them, as it should anyways. One downside is that you'll have to run the NeedleDrop script every so often to update the playcount of your podcasts. Another downside, if you're a Windows user, is that the AppleScript will only work on Mac.
As a tangent (read "rant"), iTunes is becoming really annoying lately. For starters, the interface has been looking more and more repulsively Windows-esque for the last few versions. Just recently, when I updated to the latest version of iTunes, it took me a week or so to delete the previous version because there was an application called "iTunes Helper" that wouldn't close. It didn't appear in the list of processes on my computer. Finally I found that it was a startup item in my list of startup programs. After disabling it, I was finally able to delete the old version of iTunes. Now iTunes doesn't update my podcasts if I don't listen to them in a way that iTunes deems fit. What is going on? Ugly interface, hidden processes, uncontrollable "features". Is Apple outsourcing their development to Microsoft or something?

  • Updating your podcast question....

I am trying to use the "ping" method after updating my podcast, as stated here http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/techspecs.html,
in hopes that it would quickly update my podcasts on iTunes. How long is it supposed to take to update?

It varies -- the update is instant, but it may take several hours for the update to appear on site, as the cache for that page is refreshed on the servers.
If it's taken longer than that, make sure your feed is working properly and validates with http://www.feedvalidator.org. Failure to update after a ping usually indicates a problem with the feed, if the update doesn't appear within a day or so.
    Good luck

  • ZAC update freezes

    Hi,
I have one user whose ZAC update just stops at the same point every time.
There are no errors being shown on either the client or the server. From
what I could figure out ZAC bootstrap updates files in batches. It may be
that it is opening (and not closing) more files than allowed by operating
system (I think I've seen that one before). But basically the symptom is
that the update just stops at the same point every time from any machine at
the that user's location (they have a pretty good pipe so the bandwidth
should not be a problem). It works fine for all other users.
    Cheers,
    Ivan

    Ivan,
I've spoken with our technical support folks and I asked that you give us
another try. Someone should be able to answer your ZAC questions when you
    reconnect with them.
    Thanks,

Some time ago I posted a couple of questions/wishes about ZAC andbasically
the response was that it is not going to get that much support. Well now I
think ZAC is no longer a existing functionality of WebLogic and my opinion
should be put into 'as-is' or 'use at your own risk' category. Since my
recent post about a problem I'm having with ZAC (see ZAC update freezes)was
unanswered (I totally understand that, a newsgroup is not the main support
venue) I went to the Customer Support and gave them a call. First it tookme
about five minutes to convince the rep that ZAC is a feature of WebLogicand
not a third party product since they have NEVER heard of it. Second, ittook
another three minutes to confirm that it is a WebLogic fetaure and when I
asked about when I should expect a callback I was told if I didn't receive
the call within a couple of days to call them again. Now, I filed the case
as a production level problem on top of it.
    Conclusions:
    1) DO NOT use ZAC as a PRODUCTION level deployment tool. IT IS NOT
    SUPPORTED.
    2) Lack of well trained, qualified, and timely support will be the causeof
    shrinking WLS market share.
Meanwhile I'm going to dig in the archives...

  • Updating my podcast artwork?

    Hi there,
We've recently updated our podcast artwork but not sure how to change it on iTunes?
    Our podcast is here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/picturehouse-podcast/id393128786?mt=2
Our old artwork is hosted here: http://podcasts.simplicityphotography.co.uk/picturehouse_artwork.jpg
    <itunes:image href="http://podcasts.simplicityphotography.co.uk/picturehouse_artwork.jpg" />
Do I simply need to upload my new artwork to a hosting site and drop the link in? Will iTunes pull in the new artwork?
Would it matter if I uploaded it to a different server to our podcast files?
    Cheers,
    Sam

Do I simply need to upload my new artwork to a hosting site and drop the link in? Will iTunes pull in the new artwork?
Yes; but you must give the new image a new filename or the Store won't recorgnize that it's changed. It will take some days for the new image to appear in the Store.
Would it matter if I uploaded it to a different server to our podcast files?
No. Obviously the URL must always be a full one (as it is at present)

  • Update all podcasts with one click

How do I update all podcasts with the new iTunes?

That's 3 clicks.  Alternatively you can left click on list then click the refresh button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, but that is also not one click.  It seems the goal of the geniuses behind iTunes 11's interface was to make every action go from 1 mouse click to 2, thus making the software slower and more cumbersome to use.
Is it really too much to ask to have a global refresh button in the podcast view in addition to the list view?  Apparently so.  Oh, and why did they disable the sidebar by default?  Without it, you'll never guess what happens.  Oh you did?  Yup it takes 2 clicks to switch from music to podcasts instead of one.

  • HELP ME UPDATER FREEZES OR GIVES ERROR WHEN TRYING TO RESTORE CORRUPT IPOD!

I have a 5th gen 60g ipod. I haven't used it in awhile and decided to get some vids on it. I hook the ipod up and it does not appear in itunes or anywhere. I use a 2005 updater and it tells me it's not mounted. I decide to restore it. I click restore and the updater freezes during the time bar. Because of being disconnected in the middle of the restore, my ipod is corrupted and just have the folder with the question mark. I decide to try to restore again, 5 more times. Freezes 5 more times. I download the new 2006 updater and while using that restore, it gives me the error "Error: An error occured updating or restoring iPod." Then I try it in Disk Mode for both updaters and the same thing happens. And when I try to update the ipod, the updater just force quits and doesn't even give me an error (with the 2006). The 2005 doesn't even allow me to update it as the option is transparent. Now I have no clue with what to do. Please, I layed out everything and I just want a simple quick answer. Thanks.

Try using Disk Utility to format the iPod just as you would a hard drive. Once that is complete, try the latest iPod updater again.

In FB 4.5,  if you go to the Data Services view, and then right click on the data service (WSDL) you connected to, there is an option there to refresh the WSDL.  It works very well for me.
