11" MacBook Air won't start even after SMC reset attempt

I press the power button on my Air and the Apple sound chimes, a dimmed grey-black screen appears and nothing else.  I have combed through the communities and the suggestion was to do a SMC reset. I followed the instructions exactly and nothing changed.  I initially plugged into my Thunderbolt monitor and ultimately plugged into power with the standard MagSafe cord. Neither changed the outcome.  I have had this Air since November 2014.
One of my questions about the SMC reset was how could the device recognize actions while the computer is powered off?
Please help me!
11" MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

One of the keys you press when resetting SMC is the power button.

  • Macbook Air won't turn on after SMC reset

    Hello,
The fan on my macbook air had suddenly started becoming very loud intermittently even with no apps running. I tried restarting the computer several times, but the problem persisted for about a week. Looking online, I found an SMC reset might solve the problem. However, after doing the reset, my Macbook now will not turn on at all. There is no startup chime or lights when pressing the startup button. The only thing that happens when I press the power button is that the light on the adapter turns from orange to green for second before turning back to orange.
I have an appointment with the Genius Bar tomorrow, but would like to seen if anyone has any suggestions. Thank You

    Try the SMC again:

    Then try a Safe Boot;

    Any change?
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Air won't start up after shutting it down for about 20 minutes

I shut my MBA for about 20 minutes then I tried to turn it on but it won't let me, it is at 49% battery. I pressed the on/off button then waited for about 30 seconds but nothing happened, then i waited for longer and pressed again then it turned on. (I also heard the fans) Can you guys please tell me why this happened and how can I deal with it next time? Thanks a lot.

I would recommend a SMC reset.

Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step

    Hey Msazama30,
First, I would start off your troubleshooting by following the steps in this link:

    Hi Patrick,
Can you please mention the version of Adobe Acrobat that you are using and on what OS version. Also mention whether this problem has started recently and was running fine earlier or is it a fresh install and has never worked for you.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the product after you started facing this issue.

  • MacBook Air won't turn on after repairing permissions

    Hi everyone!
I tried to update the software on my new MacBook Air; the updates started downloading and then it stopped because of a network problem. For some reason, my network wouldn't accept it so I thought *checking the permissions*; I asked for a repair, had the time briefly to see the long list of incompatibilities and then, bof, the Mac turned off, as simply as that. I did everything the Troubleshooting page suggested here:
+Press the control key, the command key, and the power button simultaneously and hold for three seconds to try to restart the computer.+
+Reset the PRAM. After pressing the power button, hold down these keys simultaneously: Command-Option-P-R, until you hear the startup chime at least one additional time after the initial startup chime.+
+On the MacBook Air, press (left) Shift-Control-Option along with the power button once. Note: You must use the keys on the left side of the MacBook Air keyboard.+
the only thing I can say is that at times I could hear the fan turning, but although I pressed the luminosity & sound buttons nothing changed.
    I wonder if it's a software problem.
I am frustrated as ****, especially as in my country I don't trust anybody to get close to it
    Any suggestions pleeeeeeease?
    Thank you!

    Hi Guys,
I'm having the same issue with my MBA. Basically, I press the power button, the SIL light flashes once for about 5 seconds, then goes off, then comes back on and I can hear the fans spin up (I have removed the back cover to confirm this). The screen stays black, the keyboard doesn't show any signs of life and the SIL light just sits there. I've tried the usual SMC, PRAM reset, all to no avail. Thought that maybe it could be a POST or boot ROM failure... Any ideas?
    Thanks,

  • Macbook Air won't start after Yosemite update

    Hi all,
I have a late 2013 model macbook air (just out of the 1 year warranty). I updated to Yosemite last night and to complete the install I restarted the macbook when prompted, but it never turned back ok.
I can now hear the macbook trying to start up but it does nothing. I have tried to reset the SMC and I can see the power adapter change colour from orange to green for a few seconds but this does not appear to fix the issue.
    Any help is appreciated,
    Peter

If that doesn't work, this link may help you identify the problem
    https://www.ifixit.com/Wiki/MacBook_Air_Troubleshooting#Section_MacBook_Air_won_ t_turn_on
If you still think its SMC issue you can try manual SMC Reset (At your own risk ). Steps are..
    1. Open the lower case
    2. Disconnect the battery connector and after few secords connect it back and close the lid

  • Macbook Pro won't start up after removing and putting back battery

One week ago I spilled two drops (literally) of water on the drag pad of my MacBook Pro (model A1278). Some of this water went down the top edge of the drag pad. Since this happened, the cursor as either not been been responding at all to my drag pad, or it has been behaving very eratically, as well as this, over the last couple of months since buying this MacBook, there has been an abnormal amount of dust in the air in the house due to some building work going on here. This being so, I decided to follow a video tutorial in you tube on how to remove and clean the drag pad. This involved getting access to the laptop by unscrewing the back, unscrewing and disconnecting the battery, then unscrewing and disconnecting the drag pad, so this it could be handled and cleaned. I followed the video to the letter, taking great care. I cleaned the drag pad as instructed, and replaced it. I did the same thing with the battery. All screws and the two simple 'plug in' connections for both the drag pad and battery have been replaced smoothly and exactly as I found them. but after putting the back panel on the MacBook, it will not turn on. It will not power up, either by the battery alone, or by using the mains power lead. There is a green light showing on the power lead input, but it is nowhere near as bright as it usually is. So I have gone from having a poorly functioning drag pad, to now having a MacBook Pro which won't even turn on! I have no idea what has happened. Please can anyone help? Thanks.

So are you saying that it will not boot from the OSX installation disk?
It might be worth trying an SMC reset as described here:

  • '09 MacBook Pro won't start up after installing new hard drive and restoring from an external hard drive.

I am in the process of replacing my hard drive and have run into a problem. I reinstalled OSX 10.6.3 using a DVD I bought off Amazon. That went well and I then restored my hard drive using an external and Time Machine.
After that, things still looked good but I couldn't log in to my user (and access my MacBook) because my password wasn't working even though my hint was correct. Yes, I am POSITIVE my password was correct; I even tried a couple other passwords to humor myself. I then gave up and decided to restart the computer.
Now my MacBook won't start up at all. It goes o a gray screen with a still loading symbol for a couple minutes and then goes to a solid light blue screen. I've tried starting up while holding command+R and I tied holding just command and neither worked.
Did I install the wrong OSX because I didn't use the same DVD that came with the laptop? Is there something wrong with my hard drive already?
    Please help =[

You probably bought the wrong RAM that has different pin assignments, so it won't fit in the slot. Return it.
I bought 4GB Memory online for my MacBook, so I could get it to run twice as fast.
Doubling the memory does not make your computer run twice as fast.

  • My MacBook air won't start? Black screen

I closed my MacBook air and when I opened it again it won't start. I tried to reboot it but the screen stays black. I hear the ventilators turn slowly when I try to turn it on but nothing else happens. The light on the macsafe charger is on. A few hours earlier the charger won't work but the MacBook worked well. After a while it worked again and I charged the computer and surfed on it without the charger later. It happened a little later. I tried to reset the PRAM and the SMC but the screen still stays black. I tried to start it with a external hard drive but nothing. I tried to connect an other screen but still nothing. I'm desperate!
I have an appointment at the genius bar next Tuesday but I hope it will start again until then.
What can it be. Is it possible that the charger had a diffect and that something overheat?
Thanks in advance for your help. And sorry for my English, I'm french.
