11 or 13 inch...help...me...
I'm a college student who needs a laptop that:
- Is durable (My book bag is packed with textbooks and I'm abnormally clumsy in general.)
- Won't overheat (my hp feels like an oven and I'm over it.)
- Has a battery life that's at least 5 hours (I usually have 6 hour homework binges and I need this lil guy working as hard as me without pooping out)
- Has fast internet speed (I use the internet non-stop, not only for research and emails, but for online homework and quizzes that are timed. Waiting for a page to load is time taken up when I'm trying to hand in a quiz grade)
- Can handle a growing music library that's currently at about 15 GB (I don't really download movies that often)
- Doesn't have a crazy bright screen (I get terrible migranes)
- Is portable (I take my laptop everywhere. From my boyfriend's, to my house, to school, to starbucks, to a friend's, ect.)
- Is Virus protected (I've always had hp's that die tragically. I'm done.)
- Has a cd drive? I burn cds a lot so a cd drive would be awesome, but it's not completely necessary.
I am also a working college student so money is a huuuge factor. I'm definitely going for the Macbook Air because of its price. I would prefer dishing out $950
rather than $1150, however, I'm going to be in school for a whileeee so if the 13' tapers to my needs more sufficiently than an 11', I guess I don't mind paying it.
Hi, I have the 11" and it suits my needs very well. But, if you're looking for battery, the 13" gives you 7 hours whereas the 11" gives you 5. That being said, the power cord also comes with an extension so you can charge it from a decent distance. And the monitor has two keys (f1 and f2) that adjust the brightness, you can also adjust the backlit keys brightness as well. The 11" is VERY light and portable, only 2.3 lbs and the 13" is only 2.9 lbs. So, I guess it really comes down to battery and size. If your school bag can't carry the 13", get the 11" and carry a charger. I mean, it's your choice but I don't think you could go wrong either way! I hope this helps!!
Also, for all tech specs on both side by side: this link helps!

30 inch HELP only 90% view (movable) in any resolution
30inch ACD working fine for 1 year, today while working, the view changed to about 90% of the full background screen. When I move the mouse or pen (wacom) it moves entire background screen so it is all accessable, but a pain to use that way as any movement of the mouse moves the entire screen.
-Tried changing resolutions, It still happens no matter which one I choose.
-Removed Wacom tablet and Software, still happens with basic mouse.
-Did shut downs, and restarts, no change. BUT screen comes up OK till the end of the boot, then, just before the desktop icons show up, the screen expands about 10 %Thanks for the help/info, Command-option 8 did it.
No scroll wheel (old mouse/only use pen/tablet)
I must have hit the 8 while working with the buttons on the tablet. Surprised the multiple restart/shutdown did not clear it. -

I have a late-2011 13-inch MacBook Pro running OS X Yosemite. (Standard configuration).
My problem is that I downloaded a fan control application and it worked perfectly, but it started to get annoying so I deleted it.
Does anyone know how to reset the fan speed back to factory settings (Maybe a command in terminal?)Hello damo1177,
It should help to reset your system's SMC and NVRAM.

I need to know which update(s) I can apply to help stabalize the system.

I am working on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009) with boot camp running Windows 7 pro 64-bit. Windows crashes quite often now-a-days and I need to get this fixed. I heard that updating boot camp can help. Currently I am running Version 3.0.4 (322).
Only Apple could hamstring and tie Mac OS to Windows. There isn't any other than whether you can download the drivers into Windows (you can) but Apple puts a block on the installer setup even if your mac does not support it.
Windows 7 needs at least Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.3 is what you should already have. And you are not getting security updates if you don't have at least 10.6.8 as was pointed out. --- you arent using Software Update as you should. And you should backup and clone Mac (and Windows) as well.
You need Mountain Lion to use Boot Camp 5.x which supports Windows 7 & 8 and 64-bit.
I would upgrade to Lion if you can realizing that Rosetta and PowerPC are no longer supported though.

Is there a download of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software if I'm not using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3?
Yes, you can download the Boot Camp 5 Support Software here.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638
How do I use the Boot Camp 5 Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Double-click the Boot Camp disk image.
Copy the Boot Camp and "$WinPEDriver$" folders to the root level of a USB flash drive or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Install Windows, leaving the flash or hard drive attached to the USB port of your Mac.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 8 installation is done.
Note: If the flash drive or hard drive was not attached when you installed Windows and was inserted after restarting into Windows 8, double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file to start the installation of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software.
How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.
Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp. Dear friends
I had brought this Mac book pro 15 inch retinal display and windows 8.1 and then I left to India my home place for vacation now my problem is during flight transit at Paris CDG. For flight change. My luggage got lost and I had to leave for India. On reaching I waited for 6 days daily going to the Mumbai airport and enquiry but now I am stuck I can't work using windows software s for designing engg.
Can someone tell me a better way how can I install windows if I don't have the driver CDs?
Thanks in advance. Sb sob sob
Pl. help. ThanksReinstall OSX using the online recovery.
Then use Boot Camp Assistant. One of the Boot Camp Assistant menu items is download the Windows Support Software (drivers). Make sure you follow the Boot Camp instructions.
Or, Reinstall OSX using the online recovery.
Then install a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Then install Windows in the virtual machine.
You can use either Boot Camp or a virtual machine to install Windows. Neither method requires any driver cds. -

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011) It turns on for less than 60 sec thens shutsoff by itself, it won't load to recovery hd partition, won't load to mac OS and already replaced with new MLB, but the problem still persist.. able to run ASD EFI but ASD OS wont work.please help thanks in advance
Holy crap, I got it to work.
Essentially, I just waited until DiskWarrior reached Step 9 and told it to skip the step before it had a chance to freeze. It skipped successfully, moved on, rebuilt and replaced the faulty directory files.
So far the computer is booting like normal, I can log in, and I'm currently copying all of the data to an external as I type this.
I still have no idea why the computer wouldn't mount or boot to any drive, but I guess I'll deal with that later. -
Help updating ATI graphics driver in bootcamp Windows 8.1 on iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch) with 4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and AMD Radeon R9 M295x 4096MB
Of note there is a new AMD Catalyst Omega driver released earlier in the week that brings 5K resolution to AMD graphics cards. Here is the link (support.ad.com/en-us/download) to the AMD site. But none of these work with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), Windows 8 bootcamp.
Please advise.
Thanks in advace. -
I have a MacBook Pro, 15-inch, Mid 2009. I would love to upgrade to a Solid State Drive. What is the best possible upgrade I can buy. I need the specs and even brand name. Thank you to anyone who can help.
A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM. Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM. RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.

Issues with MacBook Pro 13-Inch i7 2011 with Lion help is mostly welcome
Hello I had some Issues with my MacBook Pro 13-Inch i7 - 2011.. Whenever i enter/exit safari i get the rainbow circle and my MacBook keeps freezing every now and then it's really annoying i get the rainbow circle when i try to shut down the computer aswell and sometimes the computer gets stuck with a white screen whenever i try to shut down the system.. I have 8gb ram and SSD i'd want some help on how to fix these issues please
Edit: The computer freezes when i play games aswell for around 8 seconds when it's newly started so i doubt it's anything to do with the heath it's something wrong with Lion since i never had it when i had Snow Leopard on this computer please help me with what i can do without reinstalling my iOS since i can't do that now i'm at vacation with a slow network which is around 0.85Mbit/s... I'm new to Mac so i have no clue how to repair the iOS same as Windows computers when you just insert the CD and press repairWell, if you are on the road you could try to do this:
1. boot with the Alt key pressed
2. select the recovery drive
3. reinstall Lion
Hope you left a backup at home!

I have a macbook 15 inch (retina display) and philips LCD which I'm trying to connect my laptop to.
I currently have a HDMI cable plugged in, but am constantly getting an error message "no video input" on the LCD tv.
I have checked the philips LCD to be in the HDMI mode and googled many threads but have
not found a solution to solve my problem. Would appreciate any help given!Hello, anabelleho.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is a troubleshooting article that I would recommend going through when experiencing this issue.

Random screen blackout 2009 24 inch Cinema Display... HELP.
Random screen blackouts with 24 inch Cinema Display (purchased 2009). Never used with anything but same Macbook Pro (2009). No hardware changes on MBP. Just started June 6, 2012. Super annoying. Anyone else having this issue? Recommendations?
Hello, Ertjie.
The link titled Download the 24-inch LED Cinema Display Update from the kb/TS4045 article worked for me when I tried it today. Click the "Download" link I post here or try the one in the kb article again. Perhaps it will work for you now?
However, I note that the kb article expressly states that this firmware update:
...is only intended for use with and will only install on the Apple 24-inch LED Cinema Display while the display is connected to a Thunderbolt-enabled Mac. (EZ Jim emphasis added)
If your Mac is really using Mac OS X (10.6.8) as shown in your initial topic posting, your Mac may not be Thunderbolt-enabled. If so, contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for help.
