11g Block Corruption Question..

Hello All,
I am running an 11g (11.1.0.7) 64 bit on a Redhat 5.3 host. I did an RMAN clone or copy of this database to another Redhat host, same file structure, DB version, identical to production. I am using 11g enterprise manager GRID control to manage this newly cloned host. When I try to perform a full-backup using the 11g enterprise manager grid control GUI, it tell me that I have block corruption in datafile#7 and lists all the blocks. Now, I know for sure that my production host (where the clone was made from) does not have any corrupt blocks of any sort. I also ran a 'validate database' and 'validate datafile 7' command on the newly created host and all reports back ok. The full backup completes successfully, but where is it getting this corrupt datafile 7 from? Can I clear this block corruption list somehow? Both Production and the newly created clone are free of any block corruption. When I execute an RMAN> backup database command on the newly created host, it fires off and does its thing, no mention of any block corruption, but when I want to perform a full backup with the GUI, it warns me of the block corruption - but lets the full backup continue and complete. GUI issue with 11g enterpise manager grid control?

Its not mandatory that if you are getting the message of block corruption from GUI , it must be true only. Since you are using RMAN, if it can't find a buffer to read in few tries( 3 I believe) , it would mark the buffer as "corrupted" but that's NOT a corruption. As long as you don't see ora-1578 in the alert log repeatedly, you don't have a corruption. What more you can do is to run the command validate ....check logical to confirm that there is some logical corruption detected or not. Other than that, IMO you are fine.

Block Corruption in empty pages in Oracle 11g

I am using Oracle 11.1.0.7.1 on HP UNIX 11i.
On several occasions, I have been seen that block corruptions are reported by rman. I have never seen this problem in previous release of databases; but I have seen it more than once in Oracle 11g.
However, when I run dbv command; I do not see any corruption in data and index blocks; so my conclusion is block corruption is in empty pages.
Anyone has ideas why block corruption occurs in Oracle 11g. Has Oracle’s algorithm for checking block corruption have changed in 11g; I.e.; these corruptions existed in older Oracle releases but not reported by rman,
Another strange thing I noticed:
1. When doing export backup, export backup reports about corrupted blocks.
2. When I do expdp no errors are reported.
So question is why is exp command checking empty blocks?
Any insights in above will be appreciated.

Can some one explain following ooutput from dbv; what is difference in
total pages failing and corrupt pages. I see
total pages marked corrupt as 1345; yet I do not see any data or index
pages marked corrupt; and there is only 1 empty page. So where are
those 1345 corrupt pages.

Oracle 11g - How to repair block corruption(on free space) in datafile

Hi,
I have a tablesopace with 3 datafiles, out of which one datafile has corrupted block. But no objects or data is affected as the corrupted block os in free space. This was shown in the alert logs.

The corruption is being reported in a free space block of the ORDER_DATA_01.DBF.
I’ve checked all the tables (and indexes) in this tablespace and none report corruption.
=====================================================Is there any action I need to take to remove corruption at this point?It is not affected any operation on the database yet.
What is the best way to do get rid of the corrupt block, without dropping and rebuillding the full tablespace(which is around 6 GB -total of 3 datafiles)

Can RMAN recover the datablock from this cold backup(which is a week old, the data file was not corrupted then) ?Please note that to do the recovery, you would need the backup and the archivelog files since the backup. Think about what you are asking to do. Its a single block whose recovery you are asking from a week old backup which obviously would be on an much older SCN compared to the rest of the database. How would you make that block consistent with the rest of the datafile. If you don't have archivelog in that db whose block is corrupted, you may forget that block and any data that it might ever had. Also, please read the documentation about the block recovery which explains the requirements very clearly,

Oracle giving Block corruption errors when using CDC for sending the data to SQL Server 2012

Finding and fixing block corruption in oracle 10g

10.2.0.5.6
OS: Hp-unix
databases files on RAW.
DB Size: 10 TBs+
We had a SAN outage recently. The DB is back online. We want to check for block corruption to be on the safe side. We are planning to take a SAN EMC BCV copy of prod to run this. Looking for opinioms on the best way.Production is up and running. This is just a sanity check.
We are NOT using RMAN for backups. We do a BCV copy and then back that up and archive logs to tape.
RMAN: Can we do this from the control files? Do we have to set anything up? Is this the best way?
DBMS_REPAIR: I have not used this. We don't even have the package installed. I can install it.
DB_VERIFY: not sure if this is a good option or not. Is this current? I know I'll have to do it file by file and grep the logs. I have used this in the past, but its been a while.
Performance issues, CPU, I/O don't matter. We are doing a BCV copy and then mounting the DB on a new server.

I was even able to detect the row that is generating the issue.
In my case the obj# 33573 until 33577 are causing the issue,
though I have no idea what sort of objects are affected.

Any idea, how to fix this problem without recreating the whole database?

DB_VERIFY is useful in these situations:
When block corruption is expected;
Forecast any future problems w.r.t. database file/ block corruption;
When you restore files from a tape. It will help knowing if the first file pulled from tape is corrupt, instead of spending hours to extract all of them.
to check block corruption

Zero Block Corruption in SE Environment.

Environment: 11g Using Standard Edition of Rracle in Windows environment.
I'm having difficulties finding any article or support documents for Zero block corruption issues at logical level.
If i took Export of the full database, and have no errors. does that count as safe data.
Does EXPDP skip the such error like block corruption. What are the option beyond the expdp to find any block level corruption

Rman Detect Block Corruption

Hi
I know rman detect block corruption but my question is block corruption having two types one is physical block corruption and other is logical block corruption
by default rman enable physical block corruption but by default rman not able to detect logical block corruption.Plz tell how i enable logical block corruption with RMAN?
Please make correction if i m wrong.

Block Corruption In Free Space Chuck Of A Datafile

Hi all,
I have run into this issue where both dbv and rman have caught a block corruption on one of the datafiles. When I checked these blocks, they did not belong to any segments and I was able to verify that this block ID falls in the block_id + blocks range in the dba_free_space where file_id = 41.
My questions are ...
- why is rman complaining about a bad block in free space? It will never need to back it up any way?
- According to note 28814.1, this type of corruption can be ignored and if when oracle needs to use this block, it will simply create/rewrite a new image without the corrupted data. Have you been affected by this issue? If yes, what did you do?

Block corruption recovery!!

Hi. all.
I am testing a recovery in the event of block corruption.
As far as I know, the solution to block corruption is as followings:
1. BlockRecover command (RMAN)
2. drop the table and import from backup dump file
3. DBMS_REPAIR package
4. complete recovery from online full backup
My question is whether No. 4 is possible or not.
step 1 : bring the datafile offline
step 2 : restore the datafile from the last backup(online backup)
step 3: recover the datafile, applying archive logs and online redo logs
step 4 : bring the datafile online
The above steps are enough for block corruption recovery?
I need to make a document about block corruption issue, but
I have no experience of recovering block corruption.

If few blocks are corrupted, it is advisable to run the BMR (block media recover, staring with 9i). This option provides the availability of other data present in datafile.
Option 4 is okay when most of the data block in a datafile got corrupted.
To know how many blocks got corrupted in the datafile, run the following:
SELECT * FROM V$DATABASE_BLOCK_CORRUPTION;
SELECT * FROM V$COPY_CORRUPTION;
SELECT * FROM V$BACKUP_CORRUPTION;
You need to look into corrution_type and blocks columns in the v$database_block_corruption view as it gives the reason for block corruption and number of blocks are corrupted in a datafile.

Standby DB recovery in case of block corruption

I have a question,can we recover the physical standby database if we take rman backup of rpimary db and restore it to the standby db.Please suggest me...

I have checked it through rman on the primary db and not found any block corruption....

       backup check logical validate database;
       release channel d1;
       release channel d2;
       }but i want ot forst test it on the test server but i don't know how to corrupt the block corruption i have opened the datafile and entered some character but i am getting other error not block corruption actually i want to test the sam scenario so that i will be confident while resotring the primary database to standby database.....

Does Import/Export Utility check for Block corruption?

Hi All,
Just a quick question I have is does Import/Export Utiligy check for any block corruption while importing or exporting?
If yes then does it do automatically or we have do set some parameter explicitly.
I am using oracel version 9.2.0.6.

Thx for your prompt reply. Still I am not clear as you said that export check for the block corruption error and if there is any it will display the error message in log file. But does it copy corrupted block or skip that block or mark that block as corrupted?
