11g R1 Rac Installation Question

Hi Experts
I hoppe you can help me:
I have a production database, the manager ask me to take the test Server to make an Oracle RAC with the Production Server.
Can I Install the RAC 11g R1 only in one Server (test server) ? and then include the Second Server (production)
Wich is the best way to do this ?
Thank you in advance
J.A.

Based on what you've posted take management out behind the woodshed for some serious re-education. It is likely you can not do RAC on your current hardware. Is is highly probable you should not.
Here are some questions to determine what you should/should not do.
1. What is your shared storage solution? The possible answers are NetApp NFS, SAN with RAW or ASM, a clustered file system such as OCFS2.
2. What is your cache fusion interconnection solution? Will your NIC cards and switches support jumbo frames?
3. What operating system? If Windows I'd recommend not going forward even though it is supported.
If this is your first time trying to build a RAC cluster I would advise not doing it with a single server and thinking you are going to magically add a second server later. Doing it this way is not a good exercise for someone doing this for the first time.
For 95+% of organizations ... Data Guard should come before RAC ... this is, of course, not true for people on commission or being paid by the hour.

  • 11g R2 RAC - Grid Infrastructure installation - "root.sh" fails on node#2

    Hi there,
I am trying to create a two node 11g R2 RAC on OEL 5.5 (32-bit) using VMWare virtual machines. I have correctly configured both nodes. Cluster Verification utility returns on following error \[which I believe can be ignored]:
    Checking daemon liveness...
    Liveness check failed for "ntpd"
    Check failed on nodes:
    rac2,rac1
PRVF-5415 : Check to see if NTP daemon is running failed
Clock synchronization check using Network Time Protocol(NTP) failed
Pre-check for cluster services setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
While Grid Infrastructure installation (for a Cluster option), things go very smooth until I run "root.sh" on node# 2. orainstRoot.sh ran OK on both. "root.sh" run OK on node# 1 and ends with:
Checking swap space: must be greater than 500 MB.   Actual 1967 MB    Passed
The inventory pointer is located at /etc/oraInst.loc
The inventory is located at /u01/app/oraInventory
    *'UpdateNodeList' was successful.*
    *[root@rac1 ~]#*
"root.sh" fails on rac2 (2nd node) with following error:
    CRS-2672: Attempting to start 'ora.evmd' on 'rac2'
    CRS-2676: Start of 'ora.evmd' on 'rac2' succeeded
Timed out waiting for the CRS stack to start.
    *[root@rac2 ~]#*
I know this info may not be enough to figure out what the problem may be. Please let me know what should I look for to find the issue and fix it. Its been like almost two weeks now :-(

    Thank you

    Hi Everyone,
I installed Oracle RAC 11g on Windows 2008 64 bit, The installation was successfull crs_state -t executed successfully.
Bt the machine got crashed ,when executed a select query with 100 sessions( For performance evaluation using TG). A blue screen is appeared on two nodes. So i am not able to evaluate the performance.
Can you please tell any suggesstions to solve this issue? Is our hardware is not sufficient? Or any software settings has to be done?. I tried most of hte technique ,bt the problem still exists.
The following machine configuration is used for Oracle RAC setup
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz,
    Ram :4GB.
    OS : windows 2008 Server 64 Bit
    Oracle RAC , Clusterware 11g R2 64 Bit.

  • General questions concerning RAC installation

    Dear Oracle experts,
I would like to try an RAC installation using Oracle 10g on Solaris(Sparc).
I just want to go through the installation process without the intention to use
    the RAC productively.
Is it possible to install the RAC database in a second ORACLE_HOME additionally to
    an existing Oracle installation ?
Are there any traps to avoid ?
Do I really have to install the database software after installing the Cluster software or
is it possible to install the cluster software to upgrade an existing database installation ?
Is it possible to use the RAC without ASM ? (My second machine doesn't have a harddisk left..).
Thanks in advance for your advices.
    Best regards,
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
You can't have only one instance of ASM running and sharing the disks. You need to have ASM installed on each RAC node in order to mount the shared disks.
Now you can use one single ASM instance on a server that could be shared by multiple databases (on that same server). We do this in one of our development environments.
You may not have to upgrade your hardware for a little RAC sandbox. The main thing is getting storage shared between the 2 servers and having the extra NICs for the private interconnect.

  • ASM Installation on Oracle 11g Clusterware (RAC) environment

    Hi All,
I am trying to setup Oracle 11g Standared Edition RAC+ASM on RedHat Linux 5.0 VM ware box. As part of this RAC setup successfully completed. For this i have used raw devices and mounted using NFS.
In many of forumns i have read that ASM installtion on a cluster envioronmnet is different than non cluster environment.
I dont know how to start ASM installtion on RAC environment. Please share any documents if you have?
    Thanks,
    Rakesh

will the steps need to be done on two nodes of cluster or it is sufficient on first node.
"raw device" for OCR, VOTE, SPFILE_FOR ASM and ASM DISKGROUPs
before do "raw devices" you have to fdisk(make partitions) on share storages
    node1:
    # fdisk /dev/sdf
    # ls /dev/sdf*
    node2:
    # ls /dev/sdf*
    don't find...,so just fdisk -> l and -> w
    fdisk how? http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl8_fdisk.htm
Example: /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices do it every nodes
    #Oracle OCR File +~280M+
    /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdf1
    #Oracle Voting File +~280M+
    /dev/raw/raw2 /dev/sdf2
    #Oracle ASM spfile ~50M+
    /dev/raw/raw3 /dev/sdf3
    #Oracle ASM DISK Group1
    /dev/raw/raw4 /dev/sdg1
    #Oracle ASM DISK Group2
    /dev/raw/raw5 /dev/sdh1
And oracle user.. can read /dev/raw/raw* You should find on every nodes
    http://oraclepitstop.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/raw-devices-on-rhel-5-or-oel-5/
    ls -la /dev/raw/raw*
    crw-rw---- 1 root oinstall 162, 1 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw1
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 2 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw2
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 3 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw3
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 163, 1 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw4
    crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 164, 1 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw5
do it on node1 but you have to pass phrase on every nodes Before
    http://www.puddingonline.com/~dave/publications/SSH-with-Keys-HOWTO/document/html/SSH-with-Keys-HOWTO-5.html
    example:
    node01:
    $ ssh node01 hostname
    node01
    $ ssh node02 hostname
    node02
    - Install + Setup Clusterware:
    OCR = /dev/raw/raw1
    VOTE = /dev/raw/raw2
    - Install Oracle Database for ASM Home
    spfile for ASM = /dev/raw/raw3
    - after ASM started... create disk groups from /dev/raw/raw4 and /dev/raw/raw5
    - Install Oracle Database for RDBMS Home
    - Create Database to use ASM diskgroups
    http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR1RACInstallationOnRHEL5UsingVMwareESXAndNFS.php
Did you followed the same procedure to set up Oracle 11g RAC+ASM on RHEL 5.0.I'd done(test 11gRAC) it on RHEL 4 + 11g + ASM(on raw device)
    on production, I use ASMlib... + ASM + 10g

    Question.
    1. Do we accept one 3 TB from SAN engineers or ( Which RAID)
    2. Multiple Luns totality to 3 TB.
    3. Remember this is 11g R1 OCR and VOTING DISK cannot be managed by ASM.
    4. We intending to use ASM for Database files. Another question is the VIP address,
we are given IP Address(Eth02)for public address and EthO3 for private. How do we step for VIP? do we request another sets of IP addresses

    Hi,
Storage admin can provide 3TB not an issuse.
And create VIP on top of the public ip only.
That is For ex: 192.168.0.127 is you are Public IP
Take 192.168.0.128 as you are VIP.
follow the below link you can create the VIP
    http://itsecureadmin.blogspot.com/2007/02/creating-virtual-ip-addresses-on-linux.html
And using SETUP command in linux also you can create a VIP.
Why you are going for oracle 11gR1??Its Better to install 11gR2.Try for that.
check the below link for installation,

Hello guys finally i find mistake i was doing
while configuring Public Ip for the nodes i was not giving Default Gateway .I was assuming as all these machine is in same network with same Ip range so they would not be needing Gateway but here my assumption mismatch with oracle well finally happy to see 11G r2 with GNS running on my personal laptop.
    cheers

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC installation with DNS

    Dear Guru's,
I want to configure RAC on two node cluster with DNS(For SCAN) in my testing server.
    O.S: RHEL5.4(64 bit)
    Oracle Version: 11gR2(11.2.0.2)
Note: Am creating nodes in VMware ESXi server.
Just I want to know whether DNS should be configure in any one of those NODES or in separate machine.
    Bala :)

    Hi Bala,
I want to configure my Database with & without DNS. (Will try both installation in different servers)I think, you have already received a link on very good article about Oracle RAC installation without DNS and DHCP (I mean Jeffrey Hunter's article).
There is one more about Oracle RAC installation with DNS and DHCP (http://gjilevski.com/2011/10/05/build-two-node-oracle-rac-11gr2-11-2-0-3-with-gns-dns-dhcp-and-haip/).
And want to know how it forwards the client connection if a node fails.. Can anyone update the URL for this..There are a lot of information about it:

  • Oracle 11g R1 Automatic Installation shell scripts

    Hy Guys,
Please can someone help me with: Oracle 11g R1 Automatic Installation shell scripts. A guide, how to or a link will be wellcome
    Kind Regards
    Easyman
Edited by: Easyman on Feb 2, 2010 3:58 AM

    Hi Easyman,
sure, just have a look in $INSTALL_CONF directory. Files starting with swInst* are referencing a response file from $INSTALL_CONF/response directory. Either use a sample configuration file or add your own response file to install Oracle.
    Cheers,

  • 10.2.0.4 RAC / OCFS2 upgrade to 11g R2 RAC / ASM

We are in the planning phase of an upgrade from 10.2.0.4 RAC on OCFS2 Cluster to an 11g R2 RAC and ASM. Is there documentation that will guide me in the best possible and least problematic direction? I have recently moved into the DBA world from a Senior Developer position so my questions might be fairly beginner and I apologize for that now. What I am thinking I would do is create a new RAID10 partition on our SAN and have my ASM disks there. Once the 11g database is installed and configured my plan was to take the current database out of service, back it up, and then recover to the 11g ASM ... is this possible when coming from OCFS2? Additionally I have found the certification matrix in support.oracle.com but that seems to be only a certification of the database against a specific OS ... is there a certification matrix for the hardware I will be installing this on especially my QLogic Infiniband HCA and the firmware version there on.

You should try this question on the Database Upgrade forum here. http://goo.gl/hOYZ

  • 10gR2 SE RAC installation on Windows 2003

    Hello,
I want to install RAC on two nodes with Windows 2003 operating system.
    I have the following questions:
Do I need Windows Clustering Software installed before I go for RAC clusterware installation?
If not, how do I setup shared drive so that both systems can see and access OCR and voting disks?
Is there any good documentation for RAC installation on Windows platform?
    Thanks
    J

    Hi,
Do I need Windows Clustering Software installed before I go for RAC clusterware installation? No, you dont need any Windows clustering software for implement Oracle RAC.
If not, how do I setup shared drive so that both systems can see and access OCR and voting disks? You need install the clusterware pre-requisites before install the Oracle Clusterware, you must see the next documentation. There explain how configure the shared disk and other pre-requisites for Clusterware, for example raw devices and other settings.

  • Can any one say that list of hardware for 11gr2 2node rac installation?  thank in advance

can any one say that list of hardware for 11gr2 2node rac installation?  thank in advance

    Hi ,
    Hardware Requirements
Physical memory (at least 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of RAM)
An amount of swap space equal to the amount of RAM
Temporary space (at least 1 GB) available in /tmp
A processor type (CPU) that is certified with the release of the Oracle software being installed
A minimum of 1024 x 786 display resolution, so that Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) displays correctly
All servers that are used in the cluster must have the same chip architecture, for example, all 32-bit processors or all 64-bit processors
Adequate disk space in the software installation locations to store the Oracle software
You need at least 5.5 GB of available disk space for the Grid home directory, which includes both the binary files for Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) and their associated log files, and at least 4 GB of available disk space for the Oracle Database home directory, or Oracle home directory.
    About Shared Storage
These Oracle Clusterware components require the following disk space on a shared file system:
Three Oracle Clusterware Registry (OCR) files, 300 MB each, or 900 MB total disk space
Three voting disk files, 300 MB each, or 900 MB total disk space
If you are not using Oracle ASM for storing Oracle Clusterware files, then for best performance and protection, you should use multiple disks, each using a different disk controller for voting disk file placement. Ensure that each voting disk is configured so that it does not have share any hardware device or have a single point of failure.
    Network Hardware Requirements
When you configure the network for Oracle RAC and Oracle Clusterware, each node in the cluster must meet the following requirements:
Each node must have at least two network interface cards (NIC), or network adapters. One adapter is for the public network interface and the other adapter is for the private network interface (the interconnect). Install additional network adapters on a node if that node meets either of the following conditions:
Does not have at least two network adapters
Has two network interface cards but is using network attached storage (NAS). You should have a separate network adapter for NAS.
Has two network cards, but you want to use redundant interconnectsIn previous releases, to make use of redundant networks for the interconnect, bonding, trunking, teaming, or similar technology was required. Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a cluster and Oracle RAC can now make use of redundant network interconnects, without the use of other network technology, to enhance optimal communication in the cluster. This functionality is available starting with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.2).Redundant Interconnect Usage enables load-balancing and high availability across multiple (up to 4) private networks (also known as interconnects).
However, When you install Oracle software, Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) automatically performs hardware prerequisite checks and notifies you if they are not met.
