can any one suggest me a best oracle book beyond documentation...
sure,
we can understand all the concepts through the documentation. have gone through clusterware administration and rac administration twice.
can any one tell me best book for troubleshooting basic oracle rac issues. and tuning the oracle rac. wait events etc.Julian Dyke RAC books are considered to be among the best RAC available books:
Pro Oracle Database 10g Rac on Linux: Installation, Administration And Performance by Julian Dyke, S Shaw
Pro Oracle Database 11g Rac on Linux by Steve Shaw,Julian Dyke,Martin Bach
However these books are not specialized in RAC troubleshooting. For RAC 10g a very good RAC wait event documentation can be found in Oracle wait interface: a practical guide to performance diagnostics & tuning by Richmond Shee,Kirtikumar Deshpande,K. Gopalakrishnan.

11g R2 RAC - Grid Infrastructure installation - "root.sh" fails on node#2
Hi there,
I am trying to create a two node 11g R2 RAC on OEL 5.5 (32-bit) using VMWare virtual machines. I have correctly configured both nodes. Cluster Verification utility returns on following error \[which I believe can be ignored]:
Checking daemon liveness...
Liveness check failed for "ntpd"
Check failed on nodes:
rac2,rac1
PRVF-5415 : Check to see if NTP daemon is running failed
Clock synchronization check using Network Time Protocol(NTP) failed
Pre-check for cluster services setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
While Grid Infrastructure installation (for a Cluster option), things go very smooth until I run "root.sh" on node# 2. orainstRoot.sh ran OK on both. "root.sh" run OK on node# 1 and ends with:
Checking swap space: must be greater than 500 MB. Actual 1967 MB Passed
The inventory pointer is located at /etc/oraInst.loc
The inventory is located at /u01/app/oraInventory
*'UpdateNodeList' was successful.*
*[root@rac1 ~]#*
"root.sh" fails on rac2 (2nd node) with following error:
CRS-2672: Attempting to start 'ora.evmd' on 'rac2'
CRS-2676: Start of 'ora.evmd' on 'rac2' succeeded
Timed out waiting for the CRS stack to start.
*[root@rac2 ~]#*
I know this info may not be enough to figure out what the problem may be. Please let me know what should I look for to find the issue and fix it. Its been like almost two weeks now :-(
Regards
AmerHi Zheng,
ocssd.log is HUGE. So I am putting few of the last lines in the log file hoping they may give some clue:

Hi All,
I have read many blogs and article about installing Oracle 11g R2 RAC on vmware. For self learning process what should be minimum configuration of hardware.
Minimum physical memory will be 8 GB what is minumum processor required ( 2 Cores / 4 Threads) or ( 4 Cores / 8 Threads)?
Native operating system will be Windows 7 64 bit.
Thx.You wouldn't be doing much with the processors so it won' t matter hugely having a dual or quad core. As long as there is sufficient RAM(like 8gig) , you should be fine. Try to get SSD if you want more faster performance from the machine in terms of IO.

10.2.0.4 RAC / OCFS2 upgrade to 11g R2 RAC / ASM
We are in the planning phase of an upgrade from 10.2.0.4 RAC on OCFS2 Cluster to an 11g R2 RAC and ASM. Is there documentation that will guide me in the best possible and least problematic direction? I have recently moved into the DBA world from a Senior Developer position so my questions might be fairly beginner and I apologize for that now. What I am thinking I would do is create a new RAID10 partition on our SAN and have my ASM disks there. Once the 11g database is installed and configured my plan was to take the current database out of service, back it up, and then recover to the 11g ASM ... is this possible when coming from OCFS2? Additionally I have found the certification matrix in support.oracle.com but that seems to be only a certification of the database against a specific OS ... is there a certification matrix for the hardware I will be installing this on especially my QLogic Infiniband HCA and the firmware version there on.
You should try this question on the Database Upgrade forum here. http://goo.gl/hOYZ

Snapshot standby database in oracle 11g r2 RAC
Folks,
i am just wondering if the process is same for standalone and RAC snapshot standby database.
We have a DR test
1 / I just converted the standalone DR on 11g to snapshot standby database for users to do some testing and reverted back to physical standby after test was done. i folllowed metalink note ID 443720.1
2/ now there is anotherDR test where we have 2 node prod and 2 node DR on oracle 11g rel2 RAC, so not sure we can follow the same process that i used for 11g standalone database. If somebody have done this on RAC, would you please provide the steps ?
Thanks in advance

Standby setup in 11g R2 RAC to single node
Hi,
How can we setup 11gR2 Standby Setup : Primary Database 2 Node RAC to Standalone Standby Databaseashish wrote:
Hi,
Our requirement is to create single node standby of a 11g R2 RAC 2 node database.To implement there is not much changes in functionality of dataguard, Except some new features like
1) Active dataguard
-- Where you can run MRP even in open status, so that it can be only readable.
2) password file on standby should not be created, it should copy from primary and rename it.
3) from 11g you can perform duplicate from active database without backup.
& so on.
To build a stand alone standby from 2-node RAC, MAA pdf is better one

ASM Installation on Oracle 11g Clusterware (RAC) environment
Hi All,
I am trying to setup Oracle 11g Standared Edition RAC+ASM on RedHat Linux 5.0 VM ware box. As part of this RAC setup successfully completed. For this i have used raw devices and mounted using NFS.
In many of forumns i have read that ASM installtion on a cluster envioronmnet is different than non cluster environment.
I dont know how to start ASM installtion on RAC environment. Please share any documents if you have?
Thanks,
Rakeshwill the steps need to be done on two nodes of cluster or it is sufficient on first node.
"raw device" for OCR, VOTE, SPFILE_FOR ASM and ASM DISKGROUPs
before do "raw devices" you have to fdisk(make partitions) on share storages
node1:
# fdisk /dev/sdf
# ls /dev/sdf*
node2:
# ls /dev/sdf*
don't find...,so just fdisk -> l and -> w
fdisk how? http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl8_fdisk.htm
Example: /etc/sysconfig/rawdevices do it every nodes
#Oracle OCR File +~280M+
/dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdf1
#Oracle Voting File +~280M+
/dev/raw/raw2 /dev/sdf2
#Oracle ASM spfile ~50M+
/dev/raw/raw3 /dev/sdf3
#Oracle ASM DISK Group1
/dev/raw/raw4 /dev/sdg1
#Oracle ASM DISK Group2
/dev/raw/raw5 /dev/sdh1
And oracle user.. can read /dev/raw/raw* You should find on every nodes
http://oraclepitstop.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/raw-devices-on-rhel-5-or-oel-5/
ls -la /dev/raw/raw*
crw-rw---- 1 root oinstall 162, 1 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw1
crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 2 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw2
crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 162, 3 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw3
crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 163, 1 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw4
crw-rw---- 1 oracle oinstall 164, 1 Jan 13 12:53 /dev/raw/raw5
do it on node1 but you have to pass phrase on every nodes Before
http://www.puddingonline.com/~dave/publications/SSH-with-Keys-HOWTO/document/html/SSH-with-Keys-HOWTO-5.html
example:
node01:
$ ssh node01 hostname
node01
$ ssh node02 hostname
node02
- Install + Setup Clusterware:
OCR = /dev/raw/raw1
VOTE = /dev/raw/raw2
- Install Oracle Database for ASM Home
spfile for ASM = /dev/raw/raw3
- after ASM started... create disk groups from /dev/raw/raw4 and /dev/raw/raw5
- Install Oracle Database for RDBMS Home
- Create Database to use ASM diskgroups
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR1RACInstallationOnRHEL5UsingVMwareESXAndNFS.php
Did you followed the same procedure to set up Oracle 11g RAC+ASM on RHEL 5.0.I'd done(test 11gRAC) it on RHEL 4 + 11g + ASM(on raw device)
on production, I use ASMlib... + ASM + 10g

I have added the following lines to the "/etc/fstab" file.
nas1:/shared_config /u01/shared_config nfs rw,bg,hard,nointr,tcp,vers=3,timeo=600,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,actimeo=0 0 0

nas1:/shared_data /u01/oradata nfs rw,bg,hard,nointr,tcp,vers=3,timeo=600,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,actimeo=0 0 0
When I try to mount the NFS share on both servers, it hangs:
mount /u01/shared_config
regardsI am also getting same issue. How did you resolve.?

Until now we had an oracle running in one server, but now we have put an oracle rac system. The application works fine with this new situatin, but there ar parts of the system that don´t work. We have made our own applicatons that use thin jdbc driver to connect to database, but now when we connected to the rac sometimes the connection is established well but most of times the conecction failed. The error that weblogic returns is "connection refused".
I´ve modified the startweblogic.cmd to use the las jdbc driver but the result is the same. My connection is the folloowing:
Connection conn = null;
String cadenaConexion = "";
try{
OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
ods.setUser(user);
ods.setPassword(Pass);
cadenaConexion = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@(DESCRIPTION=";
cadenaConexion = cadenaConexion + "(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=" + Server1 +")(PORT=1521))";
cadenaConexion = cadenaConexion + "(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=" + Server2 +")(PORT=1521))";
cadenaConexion = cadenaConexion + "(LOAD_BALANCE=on)";
cadenaConexion = cadenaConexion + "(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=dedicated)(SERVICE_NAME="+Service_Name+")";
cadenaConexion = cadenaConexion + "(FAILOVER_MODE=(TYPE=Select)(METHOD=basic)(RETRIES=180)(DELAY=5))))";
ods.setURL(cadenaConexion);
return con;
}catch (Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
return (null);
This is my startWeblogic.cmd:

@REM passed to java.
@REM PRODUCTION_MODE - The variable that determines whether Weblogic Server is started in production mode.
@REM POINTBASE_HOME - Point Base home directory.
@REM POINTBASE_CLASSPATH
@REM - Classpath needed to start PointBase.
@REM
@REM Other variables used in this script include:
@REM SERVER_NAME - Name of the weblogic server.

I´ve tried to use the Oci driver but then the error is diferent "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no ocijdbc9 in java.library.path".
I´ve red a lot of messages in forums but >I haven´t found the solution.
Anybody could help me please?
Thanks in advance
Sorry for my English.I´ve tried to use the Oci driver but then the error is diferent "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no ocijdbc9 in java.library.path".OCI requires a Oracle shared library (nothing to do with java.)
returns is "connection refused".Which suggests a network problem. Given that you have added at least one new box to your network, how it was added would be the problem. Such as if a network infrastructure box is having an intermittent failure. -

Define what do you mean by "complete" . If you are willing to read just one book to read all about Performance Tuning, well guess what, there isn't any. Every book that you are going to read from a good author, like the one suggested by Martin , is going to be useful . And just so you know, 12c is the latest release.

Would I be able to transfer an iMovie project, mid-project, between an iPad and Mac versions of iMovie? Apple made it clear in the keynote and press releases that this would be possible in GarageBand, but I want to know about iMovie.
