11g RAC on VMware

Hi,
I am trying to install 2 node, 11g RAC on VMware, the installation went fine on node 1, but node 2 had issues with ASM and DB... The problem is the ASM and DB home installed successfully, but the ASM2 and DB (RAC2) instance are not up on node 2. Actually the ASM1 and RAC2 are not registered in CRS. I will upload the exact error in a short time. While installing I got the error for node-2, that it is unable to find the ASM disks, but when I executed this " /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks " on node 2, it shows VOL1,VOL2.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi All,
I have been through all the links you people gave me, those were really helpfull, thanks. The problem is resolved now. Actually the issue was, ASM2 instance could not detect the disks for some reason, after some research in metalink I found a note:457369.1 and as per the note I included *" asm_diskstring = /dev/oracleasm/disks/* "* perameter in the init.ora file of ASM2. Then it detected the diskgroup and everything is fine now. Actually this issue is a bug in 10g, unfortunately it is not fixed in 11g as well.

Install Oracle 11G, RAC with VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE on one server?

Dear Experts,
I'm looking to upgrade my skills, and want to learn more of:
Oracle 11G, RAC, VMWare, APPS R12, and OBIEE
My server has two quad cores (8 CPU altogether) and 16 gigs of RAM.
Years ago, I took a shots at installing RAC on multiple servers and firewire.
One thing I remember was that after I installed RAC, I was not able to use the database unless I enabled all the RAC processes on the server. So, I was not able to just boot the database and use it in the traditional single server manner.
Which I will also want to do.
1) Does this symptom/aspect/characteristic of RAC install still exist?
2) Is it realistic to install all this software on one server?
If so, what is the order of operations for the install?
3) If I have to prioritize, I'd like to install
Oracle 11G, OBIEE, and APPS R12,
Would installing R12 and OBIEE on the same server present any conflicts or issues?
If not, what is the order of operations for the install?

11G, R12, then OBIEE?There will not be any conflicts. I would suggest you to select vmware or virtual box in order to configure all these sw's.
I have done such a configuration on my laptop with i7 Quad processor, 16GB RAM and 640 GB HDD.
I have Installed 2 node RAC, 2 Node ERP and all are running smoothly without any issues.

Experiences with Oracle 10g/11g RAC on VMWare Fusion for Macbook and OEL 5

Folks,
I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro laptop computer to use for demos and testing with Oracle RAC. I am using VMWare Fusion for Mac OS X to setup new VM machines with Oracle 11g.
Thus far, I can setup single instance Oracle 11g database fine with OEL 5 (32 bit OS) as the guest OS. The problem that I keep running into due to the limitation with VMWare Fusion product is that I am not able to edit the VMWare network settings to allow multiple VM machines to communicate with each other. The second main issue that I currently face is that VMWare Fusion does not allow you to setup shared disks which are a requirement to install and configure an Oracle RAC environment. I came to the realization that after searching forums online that
one must setup a third VM machine to act as an NFS or iSCSI filer system to present to the other VM hosts for the shared storage requirement for RAC. Has anyone been able to do all
of this successfully with VMWare Fusion on a Macbook ? If so, I would definitely be interested in finding out how you did this. Specifically the following:
1. Network configuration for each VMWare Fusion guest OS machine
2. Shared storage ie) NFS or OpenFiler VM machine

I have a desktop with 2 GB RAM.OS is already using 800 MB RAM.
Is it possible to install 11g RAC on vmware with only 1.2 GB memory available?
Or
Only one node is possible for 11g RAC
Or
Can I install RAC one only.
Please dont ask me to increase the memory because I cant :)

We are planning to Install Oracle 11g R2 RAC on two VMware EXS 3.5 Windows 2008 R2 servers.
Having trouble while assigning the storage to the servers, the Raw Device Mapping feature in the VMware is greyed out and we cannot assign the disks to the Virtual servers, the disks are allocated to the Vmware Host machine from the SAN (HP EVA).
Please guide me the best approach for the RAC configuration on VMware EXS 3.5 Win 2008 R2 Guest servers.

Aside from the support restrictions for the database on VMWare outlined in Metalink Note 249212.1, there are technical restrictions that prevent the certification of Oracle RAC in a VMWare environment.

Oracle 11g R2 RAC on vmware

Hi All,
I have read many blogs and article about installing Oracle 11g R2 RAC on vmware. For self learning process what should be minimum configuration of hardware.
Minimum physical memory will be 8 GB what is minumum processor required ( 2 Cores / 4 Threads) or ( 4 Cores / 8 Threads)?
Native operating system will be Windows 7 64 bit.

You wouldn't be doing much with the processors so it won' t matter hugely having a dual or quad core. As long as there is sufficient RAM(like 8gig) , you should be fine. Try to get SSD if you want more faster performance from the machine in terms of IO.

Oracle 11g RAC on RHEL 4.0, error on 1 Node while running ./root.sh for CRS

I am trying to install Oracle 11g RAC on RHEL 4.0 on Vmware and at the end of CRS installation when installer asks to run the two scripts (orainstRoot.sh and root.sh) on one node (on the node where runInstaller is started) throws following error

I tried reinstalling again and it worked on Vmware Server.Some oracle products are certified on Oracle VM , but not RAC at the moment.

My host OS is Windows-7. Docs. posted on this forum for RAC on VMware says: your Host OS should be Centos OS and in which you will install VMware and Client tools also. In this way u can clone another RAC2 machine.
But I have Oracle VM Virtual Box installed on Windows-7. Another is VMware Player installed on Windows-7.
I want to install Oracle-10g RAC on my Laptop. Please any suggestions or Docs. related to this.

Oracle RAC on VMWare vs. Virtualbox

hello,
has anyone tested Oracle RAC DB 11g performance on VMWare server and on Virtualbox?
I wonder which virtual solution is faster.

I have created several Virtual Machines on my laptop using both VMWare Server 2 and Virtual Box (various versions utilized over time). I have found that the memory overhead of Virtual Box is lower then that of VMWare Server can not answer why I can jsut say that I have more free memory with Virtual Box then with VMWare Server 2 when using Virtual Machines with same configuration. On my Laptop I have not noticed a large performance difference between virtual box and VM Ware Server for Virtual Machines of like resource allocation and activity types, the performance appears to vary more by the resource consumption and activity executing within the VM. If I had to give a gut feel for an overall local VM tool, I like virtual box better then VMWare Server. I also see Virtual Box Updates coming, however not seen an update to VM Ware Server in a while. 10g RAC on VMWare Workstation

Hi Folks,
i tried to install 10g RAC on VMWare 4.5.2 for testing.
Hostsystem is XP, ghost system are RedHat-ES-30.
I configured tho 2 nodes with 2 scsi adapters and 2 Network Card and a shared Disk.
I installed ocfs 1.0.12 on both nodes, formated the disk and it seems to be fine.
On the next step ( Installation of CRS ) the runInstaller fails after the node configuration screen with the message:
Oracle Cluster Registry File can only be saved on a shared filesystem file or on a RAW Device.
Any Ideas ?

The Installer pops a message during the creation of the ocr file.

It looks like the issue could be because of RAC Ccluster.
Anybody using 11g RAC Database with OIM 9.1.0.2?
If so, What is the JDBC Driver r u using? Also what App Server (Weblogic or OAS etc) ?

We are using weblogic 10.3. And I am sorry to tell you that we are yet to move to production.
We are planning to have Database in RAC, so i just thought of taking inputs from you.
can you tell me under what operations you face the poor performance issue?
For us the max no. of users in production is around 6k. So I am wondering how this RAC availability will affect the performance.

How to create listener in 11g RAC on windows 2008 server

i worked on win 2003 and linux 4, 5 too. i have installed oracle RAC on both windows and linux.
now i have installed oracle RAC11gR1 on windows 2008 server.than installed oracle software . now i want to create listener from db_home which i am facing problem.
i m starting netca from db_home. following the insturction when i finishing it , the proces get started but in the middle is showing the listener on node1 and node2 can't be created.
please guid me how i willl be able to creat it.
2nd poing how to create asm instance on RAC11gR1. is it need to install saparate home like 10g for that or i can create from 11g software home.

dear oracle 11g rac recomends to create ocr and voting disk on asm.
i followed the documents they are saying you have to install grid control infrastructure and than need to create asmcfs.(automatic storage management cluster file system.).
how to create asmcfs to avoid the gridcontrol, if its must is it need to install on one node or both nodes.
can you plz guide me how to do this .

Putting Oracle Apps 11i on 10g RAC using VMware

Hello All,
I am building a Oracle Applications 11i on 10g RAC, using VMware..Since there aren't any docs I could find on internet explaining how to do this, I have come up with my own. I have combined the MEtalink doc:362135.1 and the docs describing building a 10gRAC "database" using VMware..I want to know if the below process is good enough to get the required results:
Steps:
-Install VMware on HOST m/c
-Configure 1st virtual m/c, say RAC1
-Install RHEL on RAC1
-Install 11i with 9i database on the local SCSI bus- SCSI 0:0
-Install VMware client tools
-Create a new ethernet adapter(for private interconnect) on RAC1
-Create shared disks on RAC1
-Partition the disks
-Add the disks as RAW devices in /etc/rawdevices
-Clone RAC1 to a new virtual m/c,say RAC2
-Delete the 11i apps directories from its local SCSI bus..since these would be redundant on RAC2
-Install Clusterware s/w on RAC1 using the same oraInventory that is used by the Applications 11i installation-
-Install the 10g DB software and create ASM instances using dbca
-Install Database componenets from 10g companion CD
-Upgrade CRS abd DB s/w to 10.2.0.4
-Upgrade the 9i database to 10g using dbua from the 10g ORACLE_HOME
-Convert the newly upgraded 10g databse to RAC using the rconfig tool
-Post migration steps for RAC
-Enable AutoConfig on the Applications Database tier
- Follow the "Establish Applications Environment for RAC" section from Doc:362135.1
-Configure PArallel Concurrent Processing(PCP)

(Considering that there are only 2 nodes the scenario the steps would be as follows:
1. Install RAC using the steps provided at the link:

2.On RAC1 create a single instance of Oracle 11i (Both DB and Apps are on the same node)
3. Follow the steps outlined in the Note:362135.1
One thing to note is that the steps are the same whether the nodes are real or virtual.
