11gR1 to 11gR2 grid

Hello
Suppose I have 11gR1 database with asm.
With regards to upgrading it to 11gR2 database with grid infrastructure,
I can follow the db upgrade steps for the database, but how about the asm ?
in 11gR2, asm suppose to be run under grid infrastructure.

11gR2 asm is included in Grid infrastructure, to upgrade previous ASM you need to install Grid Infrastructure first, at the screen of installation it will detect your existing ASM and ask if you wanted to upgrade with installation or you can do it later

Convert 11gR1 to RAC using 11gR2 GRID

Hi everyone,
I have the following scenario.
I have 2 servers running RHEL 5: server1 and server2
on server1 I have an active database running 11gR1 single instance.
I'm going to install 11gR2 GRID across server1 and server2.
Then migrate the 11gR1 DB on server1 into ASM.
My question is, if I want to create a second instance on server2 can I install another single instance 11gR1(software only) and do the necessary RAC conversions or will I have to do a new 11gR1 cluster DB install across the 2 nodes and do RAC conversions then?

Well mate, for once, you should've known that a RAC is not created by plugging two single instances together and then rebooting the machine, vrooooommm you go.... No, it doesn't work that way... You gotta do some good reading....
I guess you need to have your final configuration as
Clusterware + ASM - 11gR2
Database - 11gR1
Below are the likely steps to acheive it:
Backup the current 11gR1 database
Set up 11gR2 cluster using the two nodes
Do 11gR1 oracle binaries cluster install
Startup ASM isntances on 11gR2 clusterhome & configure disks.
Using the newly installed 11gR1 binaries on one of the nodes, restore/move the database backup taken in the first step to use ASM
Convert the single instance 11gR1 database (running on new 11gR1 binaries) with ASM to RAC. - Suggest doing manual conversion than using dbca for better control.
Cookbooks available in metalink and clear procedures are available with a simple search on oracle documentation.

11gR2 Grid Infrastucture Installation Problem on HP-UX 11.31

While installing Oracle 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure on HP-UX 11.31 it is giving error message
INS-06006: Passwordless SSH connectivity not set up between the following node(s),
but manually it is working fine from both nodes.
What to do now, any suggestion from anybody.

I had the same issue today, it took me 30 minutes to figure out how to solve it.
I had a script called by .bashrc that was setting Oracle variables and doing Echos to have a nice login prompt.
For some reason, the SSH Connectivity created a directory with the banner (!!) sounds crazy, but when i removed those files, started again, it went through.
I'd say, whenever you install this software, do not init Oracle specific environmental variables such as ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, etc.
If it still doesn't work, check Oracle Note: *How to Validate Network and Name Resolution Setup for the Clusterware and RAC [ID 1054902.1]*

11gR2 Grid installation error

I am currently trying to install the 11gR2 grid infra for cluster , First i ran the cluvfy i got the issue " exectask could not be retrieved from node "saixlab52"
" then i tried to started while installing i am getting "Internal error" and installation got aborted , below is the error i am getting in the logfiles , i have checked the first node oifcfg is there ... second node the file is not there ... seems it's not copying to the remote node ..
pls provide me any of the suggestions ..

JMS Dequeue not working after upgrade from 11gR1 to 11gR2

Our database was migrated to a new database with new hardware running 11gR2
enqueue appears to be working as the queue table just grows and grows
However, my JMS async subscriber is never getting messaged.
Is there any logical reason for this?
in select * from all_queues my queue does show ENQUEUE and DEQUEUE enabled
also
the user that makes the subscription has DEQUEUE grant priviledge
Is there anything else that is needed for this to work?
I have already recreated the queue and queue table and ended up in the same place with no JMS consumer being able to consume.
when enabling trace on JMS I see

It's looking like it was a missing jar in this case the orai18n.jar
Is there any kind of release notes for how to move working AQ from 11gR1 to 11gR2?

Root.sh failed during 11gR2 Grid Infrasture Installation.

I Reinstall it again after clearing everything. but stuck at same place again.

I had same problem which was resolved using below steps.
1) Disable firewall and selinux encryption both
2) Deconfig crs on both nodes
3) clear all previous install from oracle home
4) reinstall

Hi,
One of the recommended solution for this issue by Oracle.
Have the DISPLAY variable set when running root.sh. This is the th recommendation by oracle to a SR opened by another vendor for this issue.

API differences between 11gR1 and 11gR2

Can anyone tell me if there are any api differences between oim 11gR1 and 11gR2 specifically. Also can we still use API's from oim 9.x in 11gR2.

I think for lookup we can use tcLookupOperationsIntf API. You can refer old and new alternatives list here:

11gR2 Grid Infrastructure and 11gR2 RAC install as separate users (RH 5)

We are about to set up a few new RH 5 clusters and are trying to make a decision if we should install 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure and 11gR2 RAC as the same user (oracle) or as separate users (grid and oracle) as per Oracle documentation.
I would like to know what other people are doing and their experiences with this.
Here are some concerns that we have:
1) Does Oracle support has an 11gR2 cluster environment where grid infrastructure and oracle database are installed as separate users ? I have been to a few Oracle 11gR2 demos and they always have a simple install where everything is installed as a single user.
2) Potential permission issues that we might hit iif we use separate users, for example
- grid control agent - which user do we install it as and will it be able to access both grid and oracle files ?
- database listener will run as grid user. Is this going to cause any permission issues ?

It is all dependent on your business whether your business needs to separate between privileged user for storage administrator (ASM) or database level. It is recommended to have user separation but not mandatory.

permission issues might happen if the configuration is not correct. for example you might see ORA-12537 when configuring the system

SWITCHOVER_STATUS value are different for Oracle 11gR1 and 11gR2

I would like to know why is there a difference in the SQL output when run on a 11gR1 and 11gR2 Primary database in a DataGuard configuration.
On a 11gR1 Primary database
Open an SQL Session on the Primary database and run the SQL statement
SQL> select switchover_status from v$database;
To Standby
Now open a second SQL Session
Run the above SQL statement
SQL> select switchover_status from v$database;
Sessions Active
Now, when I do the same on a 11gR2 Primary database here is the result
On a 11gR2 Primary database
Open an SQL Session on the Primary database and run the SQL statement
SQL> select switchover_status from v$database;
To Standby
Now open a second SQL Session
Run the above SQL statement
SQL> select switchover_status from v$database;
To Standby
Is this a bug in 11gR2 ? Is there a patch/fix available ?

The result on the Standby Database is "Not Allowed". This is because there is no alternative Standby Available.
I have some scripts which does the switchover based on the Database status. As per Oracle 11gR2 DataGuard Admin docs.
Cut pasted for Oracle DataGuard Admin docs.
Step 1 Verify that the primary database can be switched to the standby role.
SQL> SELECT SWITCHOVER_STATUS FROM V$DATABASE;
SWITCHOVER_STATUS
TO STANDBY
1 row selected
Note: The WITH SESSION SHUTDOWN clause can be omitted from
the switchover statement if the query performed in the previous step
returned a value of TO STANDBY.
When I use SQL statement "ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PHYSICAL STANDBY;" and if there are Active SQL sessions then I get the error
ALTER DATABASE COMMIT TO SWITCHOVER TO PHYSICAL STANDBY *
ORA-01093: ALTER DATABASE CLOSE only permitted with no sessions connected

I searched lot and get conclude ie. 10.2.0.5 and later versions will support for windows 2008 R2 server. but available only 10.2.0.4. while i try to install database will get error like version not supported.
Here is my case...
i) My two application will support 11gr1database and rest two application support only 10gr2 database version. all application depend by only Windows server.
I installed 11gr2 grid in windows 2008 R2 server successfully.but it will not support the two applications.
consider the above and suggest to install 10gr2 for windows 2008 R2 server.

Another way is - $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl version.
