11gR2  2-node Primary RAC / 2-node Standby RAC setup

My current setup is my Primary is a 2 node RAC, while my standby is a single instance standby. I need to convert the standby to a 2 node RAC. Has anyone have any experience for this? I have completed setting up oracle binaries for ASM/GRID on the supposed 2nd node standby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dexter

  • Upgradation of Primary (RAC) two node database and single node standby DB

    We have our primary setup in Oracle RAC in 10g R2 (10.2.0.1.0) in HP UX 11i 64bit (PA RISC). It is a two node RAC.
    And we have a single node standby database (DR).
    Both the primary and standby database are existing in 10.2.0.1.0
    We need to upgrade the primary and standby database from 10.2.0.1.0 to 10.2.0.4.0
    Am planning to go through the DBUA method for upgrading the database.
    I like to know is there any special cases for upgrading both the primary and standby database.
    since as i mentioned i will upgrade the database through dbua method, and if i upgrade my standby database as same as primary,
    will it forcefully open the database, because while we upgrade the database through dbua it will open the database at the end of installation.
    Is it possible to upgrade the standby database with DBUA method even when my standby database is in Mount state.
    I will be helpfull if anyone has done this earlier, are there any know issues and is there any good document which i can refer.

    hi,
    thanks for your reply, and i was following the document.
    I like to know that is it mandatory to create a new Oracle Home for upgrading from 10.2.0.1.0 to 10.2.0.4.0
    or i can proceed the installation of software in the same oracle home.
    I will list out my action plan, please correct me if am wrong,
    In Primary RAC,
    a) Shutdown the database
    b) Shutdown the asm instance
    c) Stop the nodeapps services
    d) Stop the cluster ready services.
    e) Stop the enterprise manager
    f) Stop the isqlplus
    In Standby single node database,
    1)Cancel the managed Recovery process
    2) shutdown the database
    3) Shutdown the asm instance.
    PATCHING Process
    g) Apply the oracle clusterware patch 10.2.0.4.0 in the same old existing ORA_CRS_HOME
    h) Apply the oracle database software patch 10.2.0.4.0 in the same old existing ORACLE_HOME
    Note: In my case both the ORACLE_HOME and ASM_HOME are in the same location.
    i) Execute dbua to update the database in the primary database.
    j) Apply the 10.2.0.4.0 patch in standby database ORACLE_HOME where as ORACLE_HOME and ASM_HOME are in the same location
    k) Copy the recently generated archive logs from primary to standby manually and apply in standby database.
    l) Mount the database in standby
    m) Start the Managed recovery process.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC setup with ASM option running on two nodes . Seeking help

    Hi ,
    Recently we have migrated to 11gR2 extended RAC for one of our application using ASM . Its a two node RAC setup . We are using ASM Normal redundancy feature maintaining two failure group .
    I need few clarification regarding our new DR set up .
    We are planning to have EMC SRDF replication from any of node storage ( Either 1 or 2) to the DR disks .
    Its stright to use when we use the normal file systems . In case of ASM , I am not sure how this replication will work ? and on which level the replication should happen ?
    Do i need an ASM instance up and running on DR server , Which will recognize the disks as it is once DR disks are separated from prod replication and assigned to the server ?
    What should be prerequisite on DR server before we can start the srdf replication (EMC) and make it work .
    Thanks for All your Valuble suggestion .

    Before you decide to use EMC replication give considerable thought to the fact that you are introducing a single point of failure.
    Hardware snapshot replication is very fast. That is all it is. If you database crashes because of corruption on disk ... your replica will be equally corrupt.
    What is fast can not do what DataGuard does ... verify quality. If the point is DR. Go with DataGuard unless EMC is willing to, in writing (not verbally) give you a guarantee (in hard cash) to cover all costs if they replicate bad blocks and it causes an outage.
    And just so no one thinks I'm picking o EMC ... the same weakness exists with all of the other storage vendor's products.

  • Oracle 11gR2 (2 node) RAC Architecture requirements for ASM implementation

    My architect is the following:
    * RAC1 server of Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.5 64bit
    * RAC2 server of Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.5 64bit
    * NFS Server (SAN) with Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.5 64bit
    - Exported files systems for Shared Data, OCR and Voting Disks to nodes RAC1 and RAC2
    I've installed the ASM packages on to my NFS Server (SAN) and then realized that I still need a way to share the storage. It is my understanding that Oracle ASM for Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.5 64bit DOES NOT PROVIDE Shared Storage to the other nodes (RAC1 and RAC2). It seems that I need something else???
    I've implemented Oracle RAC 11gR2 using NFS and wanted to try building Oracle RAC using ASM in my playground (home server's).
    Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to use ASM with out having a true network shared storage. I'm using NFS because it is part of the Red Hat Enterprise 5.5.
    Any ideas are appreciated !!!

    Hi,
    I would't recommend NFS for RAC in a enterprise solution. However if you are doing this for your playpan, then this is what you can do.
    Once the NFS shares are presented to the servers, you need to mount your filesystems on the RAC servers to access the NFS shares.
    e.g, If the the following NFS shares are presented to rac nodes:
    /mnt/disk1
    /mnt/disk2
    And let say you want to have your ocr and voting disks on /mnt/disk1 and database on /mnt/disk2.
    Firstly, you need to mount the shared on one of the rac nodes as follows. I will mount /mnt/disk1 as /u01/shared for my ocr and voting disks and /mnt/disk2 as /u01/asmdata by updating my fstab file as follows:
    nfs_server:/mnt/DISK1 /u01/shared nfs rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,tcp,noac,vers=3,timeo=600 0 0
    nfs_server:/mnt/DISK2 /u01/asmdata nfs rw,bg,hard,nointr,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,tcp,actimeo=0,vers=3,timeo=600 0 0
    Mount the FS on both servers and then create the block devices into each filesystem. You don't need to run oracleasm to create disks on it but rather change your ASM discovery path to the location where you have the block devices created and mount your asm diskgroups.
    That is how I got my 11g RAC setup.
    Hope that helps.

  • 2 Node RAC with Single Node Standby Help

    Hello Everyone -
    I'm preparing to set up a 2 node RAC and use a single-node standby database.
    I'm a bit confused on how to set up the Standby Redo Logs on the standby to use the LGWR functionality from the RAC instances.
    Should I just create a set of standby redo logs (alter database add standby logfile...) like on a single-instance environment or do I need to create standby logfile threads (alter database add standby logfile thread. . . ) one for each cooresponding thread on the RAC?
    It just seems odd that 2 RAC redo threads are able to write to one standby redo logfile at the same time (or maybe each RAC redo thread picks the first available standby redo log and writes to it??)
    If anyone has some advice or insight, I'd appreciate it.
    Andy

    Hello Andy,
    Did you get answer to your question about RAC with single standby?
    Could you please share with me your experience if you have done so.
    Thanks

  • Primary RAC with physical standby

    Hi all,
    i have production setup as below
    2 node 10gR2 RAC on win2K3 datafiles on ASM
    Oracle Standard edition
    On the standby site it will be a manual standby (since SE) .
    Biz doesnt want the archives to be on local NTFS partition, hence the archives are on ASM. To resfresh the standby i need to transfer the archives through RMAN (catalog database is used) but facing issues when i take archive backup and put it on standby (error says that the files are already on storage) . So i am unable to refresh .
    i guess it should be done through some scripts .... but how to register archives on the standby site.
    Xml interface through catxdb was also tried(where we can ftp files from asm) but it takes only one file at a time so there will be manual intervention and not effective strategy
    one more question: can i mount a shared drive (archives on this location) on primary RAC and same to be mounted on standby. If this is possible then i just need to shutdown the standby and give path of archives in asm and recovery can be done ?
    pls share your feedback.....
    thanks
    [email protected]

    So what I would do is this :
    On the Primary :
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=defer;
    Then stop recovery on the Standby and shutdown the database.
    Startup mount and start recovery again and run you query again on that sequence.
    If it finally clears enable the primary again.
    alter system set log_archive_dest_state_2=enable;
    If not try to register it yourself.
    By chance does this show its waiting for a gap
    select process, status, sequence#, block# from v$managed_standby;Best Regards

    Well, I feel sorry for you after all these guys gave you such a hard time :^)
    You should be using at least an RMAN Archive Log deletion policy to manage your archive log files.
    See "Deletion Policy for Archived Redo Log Files In Flash Recovery Areas" at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/rman.htm#SBYDB00750 and http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/rman.htm#i1031870 for 10gR2. 10g does require you use a Flash Recovery Area (FRA, renamed to Fast Recovery Area) . Read the paper at http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/pdf/RMAN_DataGuard_10g_wp.pdf to sort out not having to use MANDATORY (which we do not recommend).
    Now, if you are at 11g (R1 or R2) you don't even have to be using the FRA nor mandatory to have it work. See http://www.oracle.com/pls/db111/to_URL?remark=ranked&urlname=http:%2F%2Fdownload.oracle.com%2Fdocs%2Fcd%2FB28359_01%2Fbackup.111%2Fb28270%2Frcmconfb.htm%23BRADV89439.
    If you do not use RMAN to backup the archive logs at least these deletion policy will prevent this from happening again since you will no longer be deleting archive logs manually.
    Now, it may be too late for this, I am behind in my mail, but you could get the standby past this gap by using an incremental backup of the primary from the last SCN that was applied at the standby. See the manual at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14239/scenarios.htm#CIHIAADC for more information.

  • Is there a way to config WLS to fail over from a primary RAC cluster to a DR RAC cluster?

    Here's the situation:
    We have two Oracle RAC clusters, one in a primary site, and the other in a DR site
    Although they run active/active using some sort of replication (Oracle Streams? not sure), we are being asked to use only the one currently being used as the primary to prevent latency & conflict issues
    We are using this only for read-only queries.
    We are not concerned with XA
    We're using WebLogic 10.3.5 with MultiDatasources, using the Oracle Thin driver (non-XA for this use case) for instances
    I know how to set up MultiDatasources for an individual RAC cluster, and I have been doing that for years.
    Question:
    Is there a way to configure MultiDatasources (mDS) in WebLogic to allow for automatic failover between the two clusters, or does the app have to be coded to failover from an mDS that's not working to one that's working (with preference to a currently labelled "primary" site).
    Note:
    We still want to have load balancing across the current "primary" cluster's members
    Is there a "best practice" here?

    Hi Steve,
    There are 2 ways to connect WLS to a Oracle RAC.
    1. Use the Oracle RAC service URL which contains the details of all the RAC nodes and the respective IP address and DNS.
    2. Connect to the primary cluster as you are currently doing and use a MDS to load-balance/failover between multiple nodes in the primary RAC (if applicable).
        In case of a primary RAC nodes failure and switch to DR RAC nodes, use WLST scripts to change the connection URL and restart the application to remove any old connections.
        Such DB fail-over tests can be conducted in a test/reference environment to set up the required log monitoring and subsequent steps to measure the timelines.
    Thanks,
    Souvik.

  • Dataguard lost both Primary redo log and standby redo log files

    Hi,
    I am new to data guard, i came acorss a scenario where we loose both primary redo log file and standby redo log files.
    Can someone please help me understand how to recover from this situation.
    Thanks!

    >loose both primary redo log file and standby redo log files
    We have to be very clear.
    There are (set A) online redo log files  and (set B) standby redo log files at (location 1) Primary and (location 2) Standby.
    The standby redo log files, depending on the configuration, aren't strictly mandatory.  The standby can be applying redo without online redo log files present as well, depending on how it was setup.
    So, the question is  : Did you lose online redo log files at the primary ?  Didn't the primary shutdown itself then ? If so, you have to do an incomplete recovery at the primary OR switch over to the standby (which may or may not have received the last transaction, depending on how it was configured and operating)   OR restore from the standby (again, with possible loss of transactions) to the primary.

    for creation of standby DB, consider these parameters: db_create_file_dest,db_recovery_file_dest,control_files

    Hi ,
    The error shows it is waiting for the Logfile. The Integrated extract mainly needs of the availability of two things.
    1. Archivelogs.
    2. Trail Files.
    Both should be retained to the needed / required level.
    Please execute the below query and check the status of the Extract / Capture process.
    The below query displays the information of each capture process in a database.,
    COLUMN CAPTURE_NAME HEADING 'Capture|Name' FORMAT A7
    COLUMN PROCESS_NAME HEADING 'Capture|Process|Number' FORMAT A7
    COLUMN SID HEADING 'Session|ID' FORMAT 9999
    COLUMN SERIAL# HEADING 'Session|Serial|Number' FORMAT 9999
    COLUMN STATE HEADING 'State' FORMAT A20
    COLUMN TOTAL_MESSAGES_CAPTURED HEADING 'Redo|Entries|Evaluated|In Detail' FORMAT 9999999
    COLUMN TOTAL_MESSAGES_ENQUEUED HEADING 'Total|LCRs|Enqueued' FORMAT 9999999999
    SELECT c.CAPTURE_NAME,
           SUBSTR(s.PROGRAM,INSTR(s.PROGRAM,'(')+1,4) PROCESS_NAME,
           c.SID,
           c.SERIAL#,
           c.STATE,
           c.TOTAL_MESSAGES_CAPTURED,
           c.TOTAL_MESSAGES_ENQUEUED
      FROM V$STREAMS_CAPTURE c, V$SESSION s
      WHERE c.SID = s.SID AND
            c.SERIAL# = s.SERIAL#;
    Also run this query to check, if the capture is waiting for which logfile.,
    COLUMN CONSUMER_NAME HEADING 'Capture|Process|Name' FORMAT A15
    COLUMN SOURCE_DATABASE HEADING 'Source|Database' FORMAT A10
    COLUMN SEQUENCE# HEADING 'Sequence|Number' FORMAT 99999
    COLUMN NAME HEADING 'Required|Archived Redo Log|File Name' FORMAT A40
    SELECT r.CONSUMER_NAME,
           r.SOURCE_DATABASE,
           r.SEQUENCE#,
           r.NAME
      FROM DBA_REGISTERED_ARCHIVED_LOG r, DBA_CAPTURE c
      WHERE r.CONSUMER_NAME =  c.CAPTURE_NAME AND
            r.NEXT_SCN      >= c.REQUIRED_CHECKPOINT_SCN;
    The above query clearly shows for which logfile the Extract / Capture process is waiting. Check if that logfile is available in your system.

  • Move datafile on Primary not replicted on Standby Database

    I'm using an automated script to move datafiles between partitions on my standby database, this ensures that only recent data is on the faster fibre channel disks, and older data is on SATA disks.
    The commands it uses:
    1. alter tablepspace offline;
    2. unix command to mv data file from one partition to another.
    3. alter tablepspace <tbname> rename datafile ' old datafile path' to 'new datafile path';
    4. alter tablepspace online;
    This works fine on the primary database, but the standby is not moving the datafiles.
    Any help as to why this is happening would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

    And why would it be replicated? If there already is the same file on the standby, redo entries can be applied to it. Renaming of data files is
    not an operation that would be visible in redo logs, it is visible only in the control file(s). Standy databases apply redo logs from the primary
    database, period. That is all they do. If the change is not visible in the redo logs, it isn't applied to standby. If a file is created, dropped or
    changed in size, that is communicated to the standby which reacts appropriately if the STANDBY_FILE_MANAGEMENT parameter is set to AUTO on the standby side. Redo entry contains the following information:
    <ol><li>     SCN for the change.</li>
    <li>     The file number to which the change was made</li>
    <li>The block number of the changed block.</li>
    <li>     The offset and the size of the changed information.</li>
    <li>     The changed information itself.</li>
    </ol>
    When the standby receives the archived log file and parses that information, it applies the information to the corresponding file on
    the standby side, regardless of the file name. If the file 123 exists and contains the block 9876543210, redo entry will be applied
    and all will be well. There is absolutely no way by which the standby database would be able to discern the new file name. There is
    absolutely no need for that. To change the file name on the standby side, do the following on the standby side:
    <ol><li>ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE CANCEL;</li>
    <li>ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 123 OFFLINE;</li>
    <li>ALTER DATABASE RENAME FILE 123 TO '/my/db/path/new_file.dbf';</li>
    <li>ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE 123 ONLINE;</li>
    <li>ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT FROM SESSION;</li>
    </ol>

  • Exec "alter system" and setup UTL_MAIL on Primary and replicate to Standby

    Hi!
    I have the next configuration:
    DGMGRL> show configuration verbose;
    Configuration - work_DataGuardConfig
    Protection Mode: MaxAvailability
    Databases:
    primary - Primary database
    physical1 - Physical standby database
    physical2 - Physical standby database
    Properties:
    FastStartFailoverThreshold = '30'
    OperationTimeout = '30'
    FastStartFailoverLagLimit = '30'
    CommunicationTimeout = '180'
    FastStartFailoverAutoReinstate = 'TRUE'
    FastStartFailoverPmyShutdown = 'TRUE'
    BystandersFollowRoleChange = 'ALL'
    Fast-Start Failover: DISABLED
    Configuration Status:
    SUCCESS
    How to properly setup UTL_MAIL package in my configuration (Primary and Standby Servers), e.g.:
    1. If I execute " @$ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin/utlmail.sql " on Primary, it will replicate to Standby?
    2. If I execute " alter system set smtp_out_server='smtp.server.local' scope=both " on Primary, it will replicate to Standby?
    3. If I execute
    begin
    dbms_network_acl_admin.create_acl (
    acl => 'utl_mail.xml',
    description => 'Allow mail to be send',
    principal => 'SCOTT',
    is_grant => TRUE,
    privilege => 'connect'
    commit;
    end;
    on Primary, this changes will replicate to Standby?

    In all cases (1,2,3) you are doing only system changes. System changes is not effective on standby database.
    For example in your case : alter system set smtp_out_server='smtp.server.local' scope=both;
    this script only set a parameter of database, how to you think this parameter must be chaged on standby?
    Is it logically?
    Then when we change log_archive_dest_2 for transport redo to standby, then this parameter will change on standby. is it true?
