11inch air turns off when sleep due to unknown problem/takes awhile to fire up

Hello,
Since the update to Mavericks i've noticed everytime i put my macbook air to sleep for longer than a few minutes.. it's shut itself off and when it fire up (after holding the power button for quite a few seconds) it comes up saying it turned off due to an unknown problem.
This never used to happen, I bought the Macbook Air 11 inch in September so its still fairly new. Is there anything im missing here - everythings up to date. I dont know if i should take it to genius bar yet or if theres something i could try to fix it.

You are not alone.  This is a very active topic.  See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495588?start=0&tstart=0
The remedy mentioned several times in that thread is to reset SMC + PRAM and in check "Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.  It is not a perfect solution.  The problem reoccurs for some people.
SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
 > System Preferences > Energy Saver
> Battery > uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.
> Power Adapter > uncheck “Put hard disks to sleep when possible”.
If that does not do the job, go to an Apple store for a repair or replacement.
Actually, given this is an intermittent problem for others, you may want to take it to an Apple store before you try to make it better to have it fail in their presence.  After that try the fixes and if the problem comes back you will have a documented case for Apple to repair or replace the unit.

  • Wifi automatically turned off when phone sleeps in iOS 5.1.1?

Before, I used iOS 5.0.1 and wifi would keep turned on when the phone sleeps if I turn off data. This way I could always receive instant notifications. But then I sold the verizon phone and bought a used FU one, installed with iOS 5.1.1. Now wifi is automatically turned off when phone the sleeps, even when data is off. Is this how it works? Because I want to use wifi, even when the phone is off. Thanks.

I have had and iphone 4 for the last couple of years with all the different IOS upgrades and never experienced such a thing!? I do not have a cell data plan (I even have it switched of in settings) so I rely on wifi and, even when the phone was in standby, the wifi was constantly on! and I received e-mails and skype calls as they arrived, So wifi was certainly ON!
However, since the last upgrade to IOS 6.0 the wifi is indeed being turned off when the phone goes to sleep mode, which is very annoying!
    Any fix/workaround?
    Thanks

  • Macbook works fine when plugged in, turns off when unplugged.

    Hello all,
As stated my 2008 Unibody 13 inch, serial number W8******1AX turns on and works fine when it is connected to power.
When it is unplugged it instantly turns off and turns its fans on full until it depletes the battery (so it is obviously getting power.. just not where I want it)
Since the problem began I have tried two new batteries, neither of which had any different symptoms.
Before this, the computer had an intermittent life, it would turn off when it saw fit, which got progressively worse.
I have followed the guides to resetting the SMC but have had no luck
I have been running it without the battery (to save it charging and discharging for no reason) and sometimes when plugged in without a battery
the magsafe green indicator light goes from dim to bright.
With the battery installed it stays bright orange until it is charged and then switches to bright green.
(I have tried it with another charger, same symptoms)

There may be a hardware cause behind the symptoms you cite, so a diagnostic
is recommended to see which parts are weak or failed in the computer. A visit to
an Apple Store with Genius bar may be helpful, as they can perform testing there.
A call ahead or use their web page, to schedule an appointment, is advised.
In the US and Canada, the Genius bar at a retail Apple Store can perform
a diagnostic service, for no fee, even on Apple products without AppleCare.
    See links:
    Apple - Concierge
Genius Bar - Apple Retail Store:

List of Apple Stores, cities, countries:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/
Also authorized Apple service providers who can test, repair and guarantee their
work should be able to handle an out-of-warranty older Mac, within age limits...
Ones too old for the Apple Store could be serviced at a Specialist, instead.

Also another item, other than keeping the magnetic connections clean of
debris, grime, and corrosion, is to check the MagSafe Board or have it
checked as part of a greater diagnostic. This board is behind the port
that supplies the computer and the battery with power from the adapter.
When it partially fails or if/when one of the connecting wires or plug fails
you can find odd issues or partial use. The battery may charge but it
may not be able to power the computer, and other odd effects.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook
In older portable Macs, this was generally called a 'DC-in board' and as
such, you could read about it in an iFixit repair guide for the MacBook
model you have. These vary so the matching article is recommended to
see if that is something you may want to try. But I would have diagnostic
testing done and avoid additional damages from attempted DIY efforts.
There have been a few reports of other failure on the logic board that
contributes to a partial failure of the charging system, so about all this
may do is troubleshoot around the failure without finding an exact cause.
    However it goes...
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hi there 8472kck!
I have some information for you that can help you troubleshoot this issue a little further. That information can be found right here:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • How do I make my iPad turn off when the screen is covered?

My old iPad would turn off when I closed the cover but I cannot find how to make the iPad air turnoff in a similar fashion?

    dpna wrote:
Yes it is a proper cover
If it is an APPLE COVER, perhaps it's not the one for that model. But, if it's not an Apple cover, then maybe the manufacturer hasn't set up the magnets the way they are supposed to be.
I'm going to quote from another post elsewhere ...
Are you using a genuine Apple cover or another third party cover?
It's the magnets in the cover which activate the lock/unlock feature to appear in your settings. In earlier iPads you could slide a magnet down the side of the iPad to find where the magnet activates and turn the feature on.....Apple have now changed how this works with the iPad Air. Whereas before there was only 1 magnet positioned in the cover for earlier iPads, it is now thought there are 2 with alternating polarity.
So if you want this feature you will need to buy an Apple cover or wait for third party manufacturers to get their magnets in the correct position.
If you do have a genuine Apple cover then there is something going wrong here....

  • IBook randomly turns off *when plugged in,* how long can my iBook last me?

    O Sages of Mac Wisdom,
Help! I've been Googling and looking at forums all over the place for help. I have seen many posts about other iBooks shutting off randomly when they are on battery power, but have not seen any that answered questions about iBooks turning off when they are plugged in. It happened four times in the span of two and a half weeks and has stopped (no incidents for the past two weeks). I have reset my PRAM and PMU. Why would it be turning off on its own when it is plugged in?
Second question: my battery only lasts for about a 45 minutes from a 99% charge. Here's the information on it:
    Battery Information:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1438
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1544
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 95
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 934
    Voltage (mV): 12508
I bought a new battery from ifixit.com, rated at "good" condition, and it will last for an hour until it gets to 75%, then drops down to 0% in five minutes and the iBook goes to sleep. It could be just that they gave me a crappy one, but here's the information on it anyway:
    Battery Information:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 5236
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5804
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 91
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 962
    Voltage (mV): 12511
    Thoughts?
Final question: I have some extra money now, and I won't after July, when I'm done with my MA and have to break down and find an actual job (also won't have the Ed Discount after July). I want to get the most out of this iBook, but I also don't want to be screwed in a year or two and not be able to afford a new computer. In other words, do you have any estimate on how much more mileage I can get out of this one? Any past experiences anyone has had would be helpful!

Hey steck and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
Why would it be turning off on its own when it is plugged in?
Have you been on the machine when this happens? Are there any unusual symptoms when this happens?
    Next:
Download Temp Monitor here and run it:
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
    report back
There could also be a DC in board problem or a PMU problem.
    Battery problem:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1438
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1544
That's about a third of what it should be.
    The ifixit battery:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 5236
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5804
That one should run it for 5 hours. It could be bad.
Did you calibrate it when you got it?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
In other words, do you have any estimate on how much more mileage I can get out of this one? Any past experiences anyone has had would be helpful!
Well with your current situation, there is a big question mark. However I use and continue to use a 14" 1.2 iBook and feel very confident in it. Mostly I know the problems that can occur and have repaired all of them myself. I also repair and donate them to inner city school teachers, since I can get good deals on broken ones (or they're donated).
    Sort of like this:

  • Screen not turning off when closing the lid

I have Windows 7 64-bit installed on my MacBook Air 13.3" as the only OS.
Everything is working great with the bootcamp drivers except that when I close the lid the screen does not turn off. I don't want to turn off the notebook but only want the screen to turn off when the lid is down. I have looked a lot for a solution and am not able to find anything which can solve this problem.
There is nothing in the power options that can be done. Bootcamp is supposed to recognize this by itself, but unfortunately it doesn't.
Does anyone know a work around for this?
    Thank you

That is correct. I have noticed the same thing. Windows 7 gives better battery life on MacBook Air then Mac OSX.
I went to talk to a Genius about this, pretty useless, told me to wait for an update. It has been half a year but no update yet. This is the only problem with the Bootcamp drivers I have experienced. I have managed to live with it, but is still pretty annoying. I always once in a while think about finding a way to fix it, but there is nothing that can fix this problem. Unless someone at Apple sees and listens to what is going on in the online fourms and fix the problem.

  • Wifi turns off when screen turns off

Hi all.  I noticed that my wifi turns off when my screen turns off (to save energy) on my brand new rMBP.  The mac isn't asleep, just the screen as I have specified in the settings to turn off but the actual laptop is still on.  Well when I move the mouse or press a key, the screen naturally comes on right away but I noticed that wifi turns on and reconnected.  So if I was streaming music or something, it would stop and disconnect when the screen goes off.  Does this make sense?
How do I disable this?  I don't want my wifi to turn off at all when my screen turns off.  If I'm downloading/streaming or whatever, I want my connection to remain on.  Thoughts?

    edit:
i know there's the option "prevent computer sleeping when screen is off" under power adpter, but i would like it done while running battery.
    thank you.

Cleaned files and apps with "app cleaner" and now MacBook Air turns off during start up. What happens? What can I do? Please help

The "app cleaner" managed to do bad things to the file system so that it is unable to boot any longer.
This is the primary reason I always recommend that any of those so called "cleanup" apps never be used. They do more harm then good.
Try a safe boot by holding down the shifgr key when you hear the boot chime. Maybe that can fix the damage.
