12.1" G4 IBook shut off this morning on it's own.... won't start back up.

Hi everyone,
I have a 12.1" 1.2 GHZ G4 IBook. I've been using it with little to no problems, up until the last week or two... which culminated this morning. I could use some advice/ help if you all so inclined.
Let me preface this by saying that in the last week or so, I've had 2 times that the backlight seemed to go out. It's never done that before, and after resetting the PMU etc it seemed to be just fine.
Cut to this morning...
I was on the IBook checking a few things online and stepped out of the room. I came back in the room and while reaching for the Ibook (and looking at the screen), I saw (and I think "heard") the computer shut off. I thought that maybe the backlight went out again or finally died, but when I tried a restart, it did nothing.
I've tried several key combos but nothing seems to do anything. I've unplugged the computer, taken out the battery (which reads fully charged) then tried and still nothing.
I have had no processor or HD issues with the laptop, so I'm guessing (optimistically) that it's a hardware issue perhaps and that the HD is intact and can be pulled. I've got virtually everything backed up on my external, but you know there's always some stuff that isn't.
Does anyone have any advice? I know a pretty decent amount about Macs, but this is getting out of my realm of knowledge and could use some assistance. I wonder if it's possibly a logic or motherboard issue, but that's just an uninformed guess and I could be WAY off base.
I've got a few emails out right now to see if I can pick up a used IBook off Craigslist to swap my HD into (as an aside.... am I limited in G4 IBooks I can put this one into as far as screen size models etc) but if it is something I could possibly take care of, that would be great.
Any advice, suggestions, tips or help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jeff

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Does your iBook show any signs of life at all--drive noise? startup chime? anything? If nothing at all, it sounds like a power problem of some sort. In that case, chances are that your hard drive may well be OK, and is just not getting power.
Did any of your key combos include resetting the PRAM?

You might want to try the steps in this article to see if anything helps:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25686?viewlocale=en_US
If you decide to get another iBook, you should try to get one that is exactly the same build as your current iBook, as the OS is optimized for each individual build. With an iBook of a different build, there might be problems with your hard drive working properly.
You could also put your iBook's drive in an external enclosure, and access your files that way. If you did that, you could move them to any computer.
If you have access to an Apple Store, it may be that they could try booting your iBook from the store feed and running their hardware test on it. That wouldn't cost anything, and it could tell you exactly what you are dealing with.
It's probably worth making the effort to see if you can get your iBook to boot up. If it is truly dead, then you can look into alternatives.
Good luck!

I would be concerned too if my speakers were not working on my iPhone.  I found an article that has steps to troubleshoot this issue:

I Have the same issue on a brand new iPad mini 2. My battery is only lasting up to 5 hours. I went on chat with Apple last night and they said my battery is fine and its a Safari issue. I'm literally losing 1% every 3-4 minutes. I tried recalibrating my battery, signing out of iCloud, shutting off all locations, turning off background app refresh, restoring network settings, restoring all, and finally restoring from iTunes with no luck. This is just awful. I got this iPad so I could use it on my long flight for a trip I have coming up, and unfortunately, it's not going to last that long, plus I'm concerned about how many times i will be recharging my battery because of this since battery's do have a life cycle dependent on the number of charges. This is frustrating and needs to be fixed ASAP and addressed by Apple.
By the way, Apple told me to bring my device to the Apple Store because it's still under warranty. That's great and all, but I'm going to waste my time if there is no fix for this issue.
Ok so you want Apple to address the problem, but yet you don't want to take it to them just in case they can't fix it? What if they can fix it? Complaining here certainly won't fix it.

    Hello, bisco,
This forum is for questions from people who administer iTunes U sites. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the iTunes or iPod forums.

Did you reinstall CS3 after CC?
For that matter, doing an in-place upgrade on the OS is always a gamble with Adobe programs. Reinstalling all the versions you need, in order, would probably solve your problem.
And you shouldn't need to save as IDML after opening the .inx in CC.

  • IPod touch 5th gen alarm didn't go off this morning, glitch?!

Why didn't my iPod touch 5th gen alarm go off this morning??? Volume was up, alarm was on, but it didn't go off!! I missed going on a bike ride with my friend now so I'm annoyed, I'm on newest ios7 but anyone know how I can stop this glitch, or a solution?

You can try the standard fixes but I have not heard of any real problem with alarms in this forum. I would also try testing the alarm a few times.
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    Every time Firefox opened

seems the problem was not with Firefox itself. Rather it seemed to have been an ad-blocker program called "WebMonitor" . i began by deleting Firefox and then opened Explorer (which i seldom do) and the same thing began to happen with MSN. So i
began deleting anti-virus programs till i came to the above mentioned freeware ad blocker "WebMonitor". it is a shame because i uised to have a program that blocked all ads on a web site which was such a relief to me.

  • My iPhone 4S shut off with a 62% battery life and hasn't came back on yet. I've charged it and all it just won't come back on at all. Is this a common problem? Is this covered under my 1 year warranty?

My iPhone 4S shut off with a 62% battery life and hasn't came back on yet. I've charged it and all it just won't come back on at all. Is this a common problem? Is this covered under my 1 year warranty?

    No it is not common.
    Most have no issues.
Have you tried basics from the manual?  Restart, reset, restore?
The warranty covers defects.  If the iphone is defective, then they would replace it.

If you have followed the standard Apple troubleshooting processes (see user guide )
probably a trip to the local Apple Store Genius bar is called for before warranty runs out

It could have powered off. Try holding the sleep button down for a few seconds until the apple logo appears to restart it

    Backing up, Updating and Restoring

When you still have the problem after restoring to factory defaults/new iPod then you very likely have a hardware problem and an appointment a th Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ibook shuts off

    Hi everyone.......
    2nd time posting same question....
Need some help. ibook was running fine (10.2.8) yesterday, put it to sleep last nite without a problem. Woke up this morning and the laptop was shutoff? When I tried to powerup it would startup for about 5 secs then shutoff. Kept trying but same result. Then I disconnected the power adapter and just ran on battery power and everything booted up and ran fine. Decided to plug in the P/A into the ibook because battery was running low and the computer shut down again and will still not power up with P/A plugged and battery in place. Will only boot up with battery power....wierd?
Also I did notice when I tried to boot up with the P/A in there was a flash/spark or lite of some kind coming from under the "little circle" on the small plastic cap located between the F5 and F6 keys and the "little circle on the "caps lock" key.
    Thanx,
    Margie

    Hi Margie -
I'm just guessing here but it may be your charging board that's giving problems? Or perhaps the entire plug on the ibook itself.
Have you tried the power adapter without the battery?
The flashes from the 'caps' and 'num' lock leds are strange ...did this always occur or was it just lately?
I've never had to deal with power supply issues before but I'm sure someone in the forum will eventually offer a solution Hang tight.

  • I have a iPhone 5 and it started to shut off at random times and takes a while to turn back on. Sometimes I'll be doing something on my phone and it'll flicker then shut down. Is this a battery problem??

I have an iPhone 5 that just started to shut off by itself. Any suggestions why?

Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Reoccurring alarms didn't go off this morning -- repeat set to past date

    Hi,
I want to use my iCal to open iTunes as my alarm. Yesterday, I woke up slightly before, moved the mouse which turned off the screen saver, and later the alarm went off at the correct time. This morning it didn't go off which makes me think it's the Sleep function, or entering Screen Saver that's turning off the alarm.
I double checked that on the advanced menu the proper boxes were deselected.
Then I opened up the event and even though it says REPEAT it lists a day IN THE PAST, not the current day. So, it's says,
    open file
    (the song I selected)
    on date
    01/05/2009
I checked future events and they all say the same thing. Assuming this is the problem, how do I fix it?

Have you tried resetting your device by pressing and holding the Home button and power button until the silver apple appears?
