12.7mm Ultrabay adapter

So I bought a W530 with the 320GB HDD, and I have the 12.7mm Ultrabay adapter for another hard drive I'm going to install. I'd like to place the other hard drive, an Intel SSD, into the main drive slot, with the HDD in the Ultrabay adapter. I'm not sure what I need - do I just need the 9mm rails for the Intel drive, or do I also need a caddy for the HDD?

aangrist:
What is the size of the HDD, 7mm or 9.5?  If it's the 7mm you will need the adaptor rails in order for it to fit properly.

  • W520 - installing a 7mm SSD in ultrabay adapter?

I've bought a 9.5mm Crucial m4 256GB SSD for my W520 for some time and now I'd like to get a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-2-5-Inch-Solid-MZ-7PD256BW/dp/B009NB8WRU/), which has a height of 7mm.
I've got an Ultrabay adapter and I've been using my original 320GB WD3200BEKT with this adapter and everything seems to be fine. But that drive is 9.5mm in height as well. Now my question is, could I install a 7mm SSD into this adapter?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Yes.

  • Is there really a gap if I purchase and swap the CD-ROM with Ultrabay Adapter III (43N3412)?

    Hi all,
I want to install a SSD with ultrabay adapter on my w510. But I saw on the forum some people mentioned that there will be a gap if I do so, can anyone tell me if it is true?
    Thanks,

Yes, it's true, if you buy the adapter from Lenovo as I did for my W520. There are vendors on eBay who claim to have gapless (12.7mm) ultrabay adapters. Some are very cheap. One claims to be selling an actual Lenovo part (but if so, why isn't Lenovo?). I put some pictures up here.

  • Z60m Ultrabay Adapter for HDD

    Hello all,
i'm looking for an Ultrabay adapter for HDD to extend my Z60m-system.
At the lenovo-website, I found an adapter that sould, according to the description, fit into my system.
    Ultrabay Adapter
Has anyone experience with this model?
My second question is:  What is the maximum HDD-size (GB) that can I use there?
In the specifications of the Z60-models, I found the information, that the system is limited to a maximum HDD-capacity of 100GB, or did I misunderstand that?
    Hard drive features:
    Standard 40GB, 60GB, 80GB, or 100GB hard drive sizes
    Specifications Z60
Do I have to consider this restriction at the "primary HDD-Slot" AND the Ultrabay-HDD-Slot ?
    Thank you.

    Cypher

the Z60 uses SATA hdd, so anything in 2.5 inch and 9.5 mm thickness format is okay, currently 640 gig is the largest.
Lenovo's figure are based on the largest hdd that was available when they released the machine, they don't update these value when new parts come out.

  • T43 - ultrabay adapter not detecting drive

I just bought  an after market Ultrabay Adapter off ebay for the SATA drive I recently bought. However, when I plugged in the adapter into the cd-rom slot Windows does not detect as a drive. It shows up as new hardware detected, but that's it. What can i do to make the drive detectable in MyComputer ( or how do I access it) ?

Does it show up in disk management?  Perhaps it needs to be formatted, or is the drive already formatted?

  • T530 ultrabay adapter does't work

Hello, Who can explain me why not work an Ultrabay SATA hard drive adapter in a T530. Isn't from Lenovo but it works perfectly in any notebook and only the T530 does't work. It's like the device does not exist for T530. Is there any special configuration of the adapter ? A "device present" pinout conf ? Thanks

The T530 should use the same UB Adapter (III) as the others in the T500 series.  It is distinguished by a  plastic stub protruding from the rear of the adapter.  This stub is what engages the push mechanism that ejects the adapter.
There was a recent new version of the adapter for the T500 series which is slightly thicker at the opening, and eliminates the air gap.
The Lenovo Ultrabay Adapter is unique to Lenovo, and is mated to the twp finger slide and push mechanism.  I can't imagine it working in other brand laptops.

  • T61 and SATA Ultrabay adapter

Over the course of several months and with different versions of Windows, I've tried to get my T61 (8891) to work properly with the SATA Ultrabay adapter.
With some SATA drives, it seems to _almost_ work - it will be recognized properly and even read the file system, but there is still enough of a glitch that files get corrupted.
On my most recent attempt and with most previous attempts, the Ultrabay and main HDD LEDs just light up solid and the drive in the Ultrabay is never recognized at all.  My most recent try was with a Seagate ST9500420ASG.  I did try limiting the speed to 1.5 using a jumper on the drive, but that didn't make any difference.
I am able to use PATA drives in the PATA Ultrabay adapter just fine - no problems at all.
This is a pretty big limitation, though, because all the new faster and higher capacity drives are SATA in addition to all SSDs being SATA.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?  Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Kevin,
Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately I've tried several times with drives formatted or cloned first in USB enclosures, but none of them have worked properly.
Some drives do seem to work better than others.  I have had marginal success with a couple of drives in that it will read the file system and the Ultrabay drive access light doesn't stay on constantly.  However, there still seems to be an issue with even these drives.
For most drives I've tried, the drive is not recognized at all and / or the Ultrabay HDD access LED lights up constantly, which can't be good.
It appears that Lenovo has sold promoted and sold hardware that is not actually compatible, at least with some T61s.  It is listed as compatible with my T61 (8891-CTO), but has never worked properly.  I even ordered and tried another Ultrabay SATA adapter thinking something might be wrong with that particular adapter, but neither one works properly.
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • Ultra cheap ultrabay adapter

So after installing my SSD I wanted to use my stock 500GB 7200 RPM drive as a data / backup drive.  Well, funds were limited after buying my Thinkpad T430 and a Samsung 830 256GB lol so I was on the hunt for a deal.
I think Lenovo charges 59.99 for the ultrabay hard drive adapter...Did some research and found this
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/300598752756?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_nkw...
10 bucks, not bad, said it was for a T420 but according to Lenovos website the T420 and T430 use the same ultrabay adapter - I ordered it and it came today, installed the hard drive and it went in the adapter with no problems.  Then put the ultrabay adapter in the laptop - went right in and fits perfectly with no gaps and has a really cool blue light.  I think the one I have is only 3gbps but running the stock platter drive it doesn't really matter.
Anyone looking for an ultrabay adapter check out the seller on ebay that has these.  I am a very happy customer especially for 10 bucks

  • EBay Ultrabay adapter reporting SATA I with OEM Seagate 500gig HDD installed

I purchased -THIS- recently and when I installed it along with the OEM 500GB Seagate HDD (which is SATA II), RST is only reporting it as operating at SATA I (1.5 Gb/sec).  I then removed the HDD from the adapter and put it back into the main spot and RST then correctly reported it as a SATA II drive.
Have any of you come across this when using similar eBay Ultrabay adapters?  I am thinking about trying another one on eBay, but don't know if I want to take the chance or not.  Has anybody purchased a Ultrabay adapter off of eBay and having it report the correct SATA interface for an OEM SATA II HDD?
    BTW, I have a W520
    thanks!

I'd like to confirm JRHawk9's comments. The HDD in the internal bay reports SATA-300/Sata 2, but in the UltraBay reports SATA-150/Sata 1. This is wrong. Bottom line, if I put a SATA 2 device into a SATA 3 connector, it should be reported as a SATA 2 device.
I have also conducted some performance benchmarks against the HDD in both locations. For large file transfers, the speeds are the same. However, for small file I/O (clearly the norm for most computers), the HDD on a SATA 2 connector (the internal HDD bay in this case), was between 5 - 30% faster.
While neither bay saturated the SATA 1 spec, clearly the HDD properly detected as a SATA 2 device allowed it to perform more small file I/O.
What's wrong here? Why doesn't the Lenovo W520 properly detect the OEM Seagate 500GB drive as SATA 2?  BTW, I've contacted Seagate; they tell me it's Lenovo's fault. With the evidence provided here, I have to agree.

  • Ultrabay adapter - HDD doesn't show up

I just bought a new ultrabay adapter for my Thinkpad T400. I put a brand new Toshiba 320GB HDD in it and place into the laptop. The HDD is from another laptop but is still brand new, I bought it from my mate who installed a SSD in his newly bought laptop.
Anyways, when I placed the ultrabay adapter in the laptop with the new HDD I got a message that Windows 7 was installing drivers for the new Toshiba drive, standard procedure. But I don't see anything in My Computer.
The HDD shows up in Device Manager but not in My Computer. See screenshot.
I tried following these instructions with no luck. I also tried updating the BIOS with no luck.
The light on the adapter doesn't turn on - perhaps it's somehow switched off?
    Please help...

  • Choosing hard drives... 320 gb internal, ultrabay adapter, or 1tb external?

Hello I'm between that options, my questions are about performance. I have a t61p 6460 d8g. that comes with Hitachi 160 gb sata 1 7200 RPM.
1-The Seagate Momentus 7200.3 SATA 3Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive may improve the laptop performance, it can be faster plus having more storage?
2-I read both 40Y8725 ultrabay adaptor works and doesn't fit in the t61p, who can confirm that? I already have two external hdd 160 and 80 gb... can be nice to use them in the ultrabay.
3-may be is better to keep my hdd and get an external
Barracuda ES.2 SATA 3.0-Gb/s 1-TB Hard Drive but I guess even if the drive is faster the real speed will be slower because it is external
    cheers
Just for curiosity... including vista, how much storage do you use for the program files? I have like 80 gb just for the programs is that too much?

I think that import the adapter would be more expensive than getting a 320 gb, considering that the adapter is going to be in a slower interface.
At other side it can be great to have 2nd hdd so may it can startup with another OS.
And about the hdd performance, there's some points a don't get, here are the datasheets
    http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_momentus_7200_3.pdf
    http://www.hitachigst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/A198FEF5A3B22F08862572D400656432/$file/7K200DS.p...
I guess the many / in the measures correspond to the different models in the Hitachi my one should be the second model.
The data transfer info is given in a different way I don't know how I should compare them...
And the reading time that is 10 ms in the Hitachi I found another place that says that is 11 ms for the Seagate.

  • W530 Drive Bay Adapter and Drive Caddy

I purchased a W530 and immediatly swapped out the included hard drive for an SSD. I also purchased the drive bay adapter and planned on moving that original drive to it, but it did not come with a drive caddy. If the drive bay does not come with an extra one, and hard drives do not come with them.... why was it not included? Where do I purchase one? Does it need those rubber sides that are now around the SSD?

    Hey Chuntley,
If you search around the forums you will find a lot of post on this or close to this subject about installing a second drive to W530.

  • W530 HDD/SSD detailed RAIL/TRAY info request

My apologies as this may appear to be beating a dead horse.  However, I have called Tech support twice, Boulder IBM parts twice, and Lenovo Inside Sales twice.  Sales & this site were the most helpful.
I'm posting this as there seems to be some data/info missing as to what some of the parts are comprised of and their specs.  I need this data so I can order the final upgrade parts from either IBM, newmodeus, or ?.  I'm also hoping this thread will help other people who are in the same boat as I am which is ordering parts prior to receiving the PC.
I'm attempting to do what appears to be the standard W530 main drive bay 500GB 7200 rpm HDD move to a 12.7mm Ultrabay and then insertion of a SSD into the main drive bay.  I will be inserting a OCZ 9.3mm Vertex 4 256GB SSD in the main drive bay.
From the forums, the Lenovo web site, sales, and IBM parts I've attained the following info.
    A) It appears that the main drive bay will hold up to a 9.5mm drive.
    B) The W530 could ship with either a 7mm or a 9.5mm 500GB 7200 RPM HDD.
    * What's relevant with this is there must be two different rail options shipped from IBM, 7mm & 9mm rails to fill the main drive bay. *
    C) Lenovo P/N 0A65623 = the proper 12.7mm Ultrabay adapter for the W530 due to the larger notebook form factor.
    D) From Sales, there are 2 sets of rails available/recommended for the 12.7mm Bay:
IBM P/N 04W1640 = COVER (Rubber Rails for a HDD)
IBM P/N 04W1641 = SSD SPACER (Hard Spacer Rails for a SSD)
          * Concerned that these may not fit the Bay properly or be the correct parts. *
    E) From Sales, IBM P/N 41V9756 = RUBBER SHEET FRU (Rubber Rails for SSD or HDD in the Main Drive Bay)
    * Are these rubber rails for a 7mm or a 9.5mm drive natively? Does this kit contain a caddy tray? *
    F) newmodeus Model TP-60 = a metal caddy tray, 4 mounting screws, and two rubber rails. The rubber rails are supposedly the same as IBM P/N 41V9756.  Website link below:
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_7&products_id=218
I've read the threads and have seen where people shim and cut the rubber rails depending on the drive size.  No offense intended but I want to install the correct and perfectly sized config.
I'd like to buy genuine parts so I'm really trying hard to make use of the above IBM parts.  The questions below will help me decide on what my SSD mounting config should consist of.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the following info anywhere.
    1) Do any of the IBM rail kits listed above in D & E come with a caddy tray & screws?
The newmodeus TP-60 does so I am concerned a tray and screws are needed for a proper tight/secure fit.
    2) Do either of the stock Lenovo 500GB 7200 RPM HDD drives ship installed with a caddy tray, screws, and rubber rail config in the main drive bay?  If no, what is the config?
    3) Is the intended Lenovo design, to always use a caddy tray and rails?
    4) Has anyone purchased a W530 with a SSD in the main drive bay and if yes, did it have a caddy tray attach for use with its rails?
    5) if a SSD was initially purchased, did it ship with just the hard SSD SPACER rails and no tray?
    6) If someone has purchased the IBM rail kits, do all three of the kits have the same outside height dimensions?
    7) Does anyone have these dimension(s)?
    8) Has anyone taken their stock 500GB 7200 RPM HHD and rails/potential caddy tray out of the main drive bay and just plopped it into the 12.7mm Bay?
    9) If yes to question 8, is it a perfect tight/snug fit without any gaps, space, or room to jar loose?
    * Concern here that the 12.7mm Bay is bigger and the locking mechanism on the bay will not provide a tight fit. *
Sorry for all the questions and the above novel.  If it were easy, we'd either be monkeys or paying Lenovo for the integrated parts.
Hoping I can just port the existing HDD/rails/tray over to the Bay.  Then it's a matter of how my SSD should be mounted in the  inside of the main drive bay.
ANY help, to any of the above comments or questions would be greatly appreciated!!
This has been really frustrating not being able to discover the config.  It seems like it should be really simple... How big are both bay demensions, what are the outside dimensions of the rails, what is the inside config of the rails in terms of drive size dimensions, and are we supposed to use caddy trays all the time with every drive or just a HDD or none at all...  I was REALLY expecting tech support to know this.  Instead, I had to teach them...  They said the PC was new...
I'm expecting the PC this week along with the SSD and some RAM.  I'd like to have they correct rail and caddy tray, if needed, here and ready to go.  Need to get this puppy staged and ready to go so I can hit the ground running.
    Cheers & Thanks!

    Thanks harrisb!
Your solution makes sense.  I found the newmodeus bay after my bundled purchase of the W530, the 12.7mm Bay and the MiniDock.  Also found this forum after the transaction.  It's a shame but it really seems like the Lenovo Bay is making this more difficult than it should be due to the lack of info.
Unfortunately, UPS is delivering my Lenovo Bay and Dock today.  The SSD and RAM has also shipped and is due to arrive this week as is the W530.
The only thing that hasn't been purchased is the SSD and HDD mounting gear.
With this info what would you or anyone else do at this point?
Would purchasing the newmodeus TP-60 Tray, Screws, and rails work with the SSD in the Main Drive bay?
Would the HDD and it's default rails/tray fit perfectly/securely in the 12.7mm Bay?
Would the kit that comes on the HDD still work on the SSD in the Main Drive and then use the newmodeus TP-60 kit on the HDD in the Bay?
There's also the IBM parts?  Just concerned they don't come with the tray or screws.  And, they won't fit securely in the main drive or bay.
    Really appreciate the speedy reply!!
P.S. Got the OCZ due to the great IOPS specs.
