12" doesn't pick up as many wifi networks as other powerbooks

My sister has a 12" powerbook and at school her wireles card only picks up half as many networks as other students computers. Any ideas?

I tend to actually pick up more wireless networks or a stronger connection to wireless networks with my Powerbook 12" than most windows computers.
It may have something to do with the airport card that's in each powerbook - I've noticed that the Airport in my desktop (intel mini) is stronger than my powerbook G4, so it could just be the strength of the card varies from computer to computer.
Are the other powerbooks 12"'s or are they the 15" and 17"?

  • Since upgrading to latest iOS, my WLAN can not see many wifi networks,  my friends iPhones pick them up easily. What should I do?

Since upgrading my 4s iPhone to the latest iOS , I now can not see many wi-fi locations beyond my home network.  Friends can find and connect to many wifi networks yet my iPhone does not even see them.  I can not recall prior to the upgrade whether in the settings whether turning on the wifi was shown as wifi or WLAN however the on/off is now WLAN.  Not sure what the difference is.  I totally reset the phone but no improvement.  Can any body help me?

I have tried this however it did not make a difference.  I found another user on the support pages that has the same issue.

  • How many wifi networks can an iPhone 4 remember?

As the title really, how many at one time can an iPhone 4 remember, and is there anyway of seeing a list of what it is remembering and then editing that list to delete wifi networks it remembers that no longer exist?

Settings App > General > Auto-Lock > set to time you want including Never Lock.

  • My iPhone won't allow me to scan for any network and won't even pick up on any wifi networks near by. How do I fix this?

My iPhone 4s won't allow me to scan for any networks and won't even pull up wifi networks near by. How do I fix this?

Settings > General > Network > Reset Network Settings.
If that does not resolve the issue...
Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Has any of this been tried?

  • Do I have too many wifi networks

I could use some other opinions on my setup as  as I'm just not sure I've gone about this the right way over time.  I don't know if all these signals are creating conflicts or anything.
For all referenced wifi/wireless signals, I have not limited to a particular channel or signal.
Through the past few years I've tried to maximize our wifi signal such that we have good coverage inside the house and outside while sitting on the front and back porch.  Our house is 4 levels including a basement and top floor with 6,000 square feet or so.  With kids/parents, etc, we have an apple tv connecting wirelessly, two iphones, we control  our outdoor speakers wirelessly, one macbook, multiple ipads/iphones, etc. The set up I have today is:
Verizon ran the FiOs stuff through the basement so their wire/router comes in on the bottom/basement floor.  I've taken their Verizon router and turned off the wifi, and connect their router directly to an Apple time capsule.  I have a wireless signal turned on here to cover the basement.  All Ethernet connections in the house are to this TC in the basement.
Note all references to wireless networks are a wireless network by the same name but "created" with the same password (not extending a wireless network) unless otherwise noted:
    Basement:
    1. The wifi signal mentioned above.
On the ground level I have:
    1. Kitchen connected by Ethernet with an airport express sending a wireless signal.
    2.  A cubby hole office area connected by ethernet with an airport express.  This sends out a wireless signal.
    3.  Family room has an entertainment system with an airport express with speakers connected that are wired all the way outside the house.  This system sends off a wireless signal that "extends" the wireless network (not connected by Ethernet due to location).
    4.  Recently added a brand new Time Capsule in the main office area.  This sends a wireless signal as well.  This was installed in the past 72 hours and I swear it seems like the signals have gotten worse in the house.
    On the third floor:
    1. A loft area is connected by Ethernet with a 1st gen Time Capsule.  This sends a wireless signal.
    2.  The master bedroom is connected by Ethernet with an airport express.  This sends a wireless signal.
4th floor:  No hardware.  Area rarely used.
In the ground floor, # 3 was needed with how we set up our outdoor speakers.   I've noticed that different devices will connect to different wifi signals even if we're sitting side by side.   I'm not an expert at this stuff but I basically kept adding hardware until I could feel comfortable I was getting a solid signal with the shape/construction of our house.  Not sure if there is a better way to go about it.
    Thanks for reading.

In addition to John Galt's comments, here is some additional information to consider.
Mac laptops will generally do a good job of automatically switching from one wireless access point to another as they move about the house....to pick up the "best" quality signal from what is usually the closest wireless access point at any given time.
But, this is not generally true for iOS devices like an iPhone and iPad.....since these devices use much simpler operating systems than a Mac computer.  As a general rule, an iOS will connect to the closest wireless access point (the strongest signal) when it is powered up.
But, if you move an iOS device from one area to another, the iOS will usually not switch access points quickly, and instead hold onto the original AirPort to which it connected....even if it is close to another access point. Kind of a nature of the beast with the iOS system.
The iOS device might switch over to another access points after some time....a few minutes or longer....and it might not. You have to experiment a bit to find out how things behave at your home.
So, if you are moving an iOS device from one side of the house to another, or from upstairs to downstairs....and you want the iOS device to connect to the best quality signal....turn off the WiFi temporarily for a minute or two on the iOS device and then turn it back on when the iOS device is in the new location.  The iOS device will usually connect to the stronger wireless access point when you do this.

  • Brand new MBP rarely detects Wifi network- 4 other devices have no problem

I am using a 4-week old MBP with Lion that was installed via the App Store immediately after purchase.
I read up on the Wifi issues with the MacBook Pro / Lion but mine seems a bit different.
Once I get connected to Wifi, the connection doesn't drop and is not weak, however, getting the connection is the problem. Airport detects my network off the bat only about 50 percent of the time. I live in a city with about 20 networks available at any given time. When I click on the airport icon, the same 4 networks (not mine) appear immediately every time. After waiting or re-clicking, if I'm lucky mine will show up in the list after about 20 to 30 seconds, but sometimes it doesn't show up at all. Restarting the router doesn't seem to help. Sometimes rebooting the computer does, and once in a while after a reboot my MBP will find the network immediately and auto-connect... when it does that the pages load at lightning speed and it works great until the next disconnect (when it sleeps).
Could this be my router just being too old for my MacBook Pro? My iPhone, iBook, PowerBook G4 and Asus laptop have no problems.
I've tried changing the broadcast channel on the router, deleting the plists frequently mentioned in these forums, deleting and re-adding the wireless connection (many many times), moving WLAN up to the top of the list in Network Prefs, updating router firmware, routing through my iPhone (no problem)...
Please help! Should I take it back to the store for an exchange? I bought it in the US and live in Germany... not sure I can even do that.

    System Preferences > Network > Airport/WiFi
Even if WiFI is at the top, use the gear below the list of Interfaces to choose "Set Service Order"  and put Airport/WiFi at the TOP. This will make a big difference.
    Click ( Advanced )
In the WiFi/Airport pane, be sure the Networks you most want to join are listed at the top of the list, and feel free to delete any you don't care to join automatically. Once you have a good list, check [√] Ask to join networks (rather than just joining them).
In the TCP/IP pane, set IPv4 to  DHCP and set IPv6 to OFF or Manually OFF.

  • MacBook pro can't find any wifi networks. HELP PLEASE

Ok so my late 2011 MacBook pro15" starTed dropping out of my network every now and then. Rebooting it got it hooked back up again. Now just a few weeks ago its not picking up any real wifi networks (according to my phone and what my computer showed me before there's a bunch in range). It shows this network called setup as the only wifi network in range and when I click on it, there is this little grey picture of a computer where the wifi bars should be.
Xbox,  phone and all of the roommates devices are hooked up just fine.
I've taken it out to a couple of coffee shops and its the same thing.  Either seeing no networks or that setup thing.
I've tried restarting,  verify and repair disk, deleting all of my preferred networks.  I don't know what else to do.

Also I've tried to use one of those usb WiFi adapters that essentially bypasses the computers airport card.  That shows all the networks in range but will fail to connect to any of them.

  • Airport doesn't automatically connect to my preferred network

I had my hard drive replaced and ever since my airport doesn't automatically connect to my wifi network. I have specified my network as my preferred network in my system preferences.
I need to re-connect to the network manually (ie: I need to select my network form the drop down list) each time I wake my computer up from sleep mode.
How do I have my airport automatically connect??

Go to System Preferences then select the Network icon.
Select the airport adaptor then click advanced
the first tab "Airport" has all your recent SSID's listed.
Select the desired network and drag it to the top of the list and check the " Remember Networks this computers has joined."
Apart from that the next best thing would be to removed all the networks from the list and add that network you wish to join to verify its configuration

  • Automatically conncet to WIFI network

Yet another new behaviour since upgrading to 3.0, my ipod touch doesn't automatically connect to known WIFI networks anymore..
Used to be when i was in range, i would hear a little chime and it would connect then get push notifications of mail etc..
now i have to go to settings, wifi, connect to network.
anyone have any clue how to fix this?
(yes, already tried forget this network, reset network settings, and restore from new)

I don't have an answer, but I am having the same problem. My G2 iPod has been inconsistent in connecting to known networks under OS 2 and 3. For a few days, it might find networks it has been connected to before, but then it seems to "forget" them. Right now, I'm sitting beside an Airport extreme with two Macs connected via wifi (they connect without fail on startup), and the iPod can't even see the network, let alone remember it. If I tap Other, I can connect. It makes no difference whether "ask to join networks" is on or off. Today, I have "ask to join" turned off, and when I wake up the iPod, it sees the wifi network (because I just connected to it manually earlier today), but I have tap it to get it to join. If I turn "ask to join" on, and let the iPod sleep, when I wake it up, it can't see the network at all, and I have to manually join.
I'm sure there is an explanation, but whatever it is, I have to conclude that joining a network any number of times, does not establish it as a known network, and that the iPod does not have wifi connectivity particularly well implemented -- obviously not as well as the Macs I have in the same room.
Maybe there is a page where a list of "known" networks can be displayed? If so, I don't know where that is.
What makes a network "known"? Obviously, joining it is not enough. What does it take?
Wifi connectivity on the iPod is a big disappointment on an otherwise remarkable product.

  • Third-Party apps can't connect to public wifi  networks.

When I connect my iPhone to my university's Wi-Fi connection, Apple Apps (Safari, Mail, iTunes, App Store...) all function normally. But when it comes to third-party apps I can't get them to connect to the internet. So is there a workaround to this? Maybe get iPhone to treat apps as an "Apple App" so the proxy server gives it access to the connection (The server requires a username and password verification to connect). This happens with other public wi-fi connections. I dunno if I'm giving all the necessary info. so if anything is unclear, I can explain further...
    Thanks

You don't give any examples of the apps that are not working.
Some public WiFi networks will only have certain network ports open, like those for web and mail. If an app uses an unusual network port then it may not work on the public WiFi network.

  • I get "wrong password" error when trying to connect to a Wifi network.

Only workarround is to reset network settings before changing to any wifi network. This is a pain. Please help!

It's any network. If I reset network settings, I can connect at home, but I get the "wrong password" but not at work. Then, if I reset it again, I can conect at work, but not at home.
Only way to switch Wifi network is through a "reset network settings" operation.
On my wive's iPhone 5 this problem does not exist. She can commute seemlessly among WIFI networks.

  • TS1398 phone not auto joining wifi at home other iphones are ok though any ideas anyone

help plz,   iphone 4 not auto joining wifi network @ home, other iphones in house are joining with no probs can anyone help????

hi, if dilbert41's answer didn't work, try pressing on the little bleu arrow next to your wifi name in settings>wi-fi, then press forget this network, then press your wifi name again and type ur password, then check again that 'ask to join networks' is turned off in the bottom of the wi-fi page, and it should normally work

  • Why do I try To Connect To a wifi network and it says that password is incorrect although it's the correct one?

    .

    passwords are case sensitive
people who don't change the default SSID of their wifi network can easyly confuse their wifi network with others within range where the user own the same router type and also didn't change the default password

  • IPhone doesn't pick up wifi automatically

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. Often my iPhone doesn't pick up wifi when I come into a wi-fi zone and stays on GPRS until I go into setting, wifi and then it picks up the network. Sometimes it does it automatically but it's annoying when it doesn't. It sometimes does the same with network signal if you go into a 'No Service' area and then come out of it it often takes a long time to pick up the network signal again. What could be wrong?

These are wi-fi networks your iPhone has connected with previously?
If not, your iPhone won't automatically connect to an available wi-fi network unless your iPhone has successfully connected to the network previously.
You can try resetting network settings at Settings > General > Reset.
This will erase all saved wi-fi networks and settings your iPhone has connected with previously and require manually re-joining every wi-fi network your iPhone has access to when returning within range of such a wi-fi network. This will also reset your cellular network connection.
