12 hour download time on my movie rentals!!

Hi Guys, hoping someone can help?
Purchased Apple Tv 2nd Gen 3months ago and everything has been fine until recently.
My Sagem Sky router went faulty a month ago and I replaced this with a Netgear N-150. My movie rentals are now taking 12 hours to download!!
I used to be able to select a movie and within 2mins the movie would start playing. Now, the movie I select will have to fully download 12 hours before I even get to watch.
I am convinced I need to change a setting in the router but have know idea what.. In need of some serious help as I will not give up on my apple tv, I was great.

@Chenks - I will phone Sky and find out what package Ive got. It makes complete sence to have unlimited downloads.
you should know by the price you pay for internet access.
you can also find you by logging into mysky and it will tell you the package there.
As for the router change - we change clients Sky routers all the time to work better with multi-room audio systems and home automation systems. Sky just dont support any other router and do not give you the Login and password for the broadband but theres a web page out there that will generate one for you to do this.
yes i know the ways to do that (i did it in the past), and know of the problems that can be had by not using their routers. Sky are now also actively monitoring the connections and blocking access by non-sky routers - so be prepared. the official line is they don't, but real-world experience says they are. sky will replace you broken sagem router FOC so there is no reason not to use it.

  • Apple TV taking a long time to download an iTunes Store movie rental

Normally when we rent a movie from the iTunes Store via Apple TV we're able to start watching it within a few minutes. We just rented one, however, and the downloading process is going super slow. It's been downloading for at least 10 minutes, it's just 22 percent done, and AppleTV is saying that we won't be able to start watching it for another 35 minutes.
Our Internet seems to be working fine and at normal speeds otherwise though.
Any idea why the Apple TV is taking so long to download this movie rental?

you have 30 days to start watching it.
He probably means that it's too late in the evening to start the video, at least that was our problem.
The movie was Hi-def, lineout, but they almost always are and we've never had it take so long--it would have been faster for me to drive out to the local video store and pick up a DVD.

  • Problems downloading and watching first movie rental from iTunes

I wanted to try renting a movie through iTunes tonight and it has been constant problems on my Windows 7 64-but PC home theater PC with iTunes 10.5.  I was going to rent it through Amazon Video on Demand, but they didn't offer the movie in HD on a PC (I would need a Ruku box, Tivo or Blu Ray player to get Amazon Video in HD).  I have used Amazon SD and Netflix HD streaming on the PC with no issues, so it is not normal to have problems streaming video with this PC or the internet connection here.
The iTunes download was indicating it will take 2 hours and I let it buffer about 30 minutes on my 15Mb connection.  Over 1 gig is cached.
I can only play the movie a few minutes at a time before the movie playback and download both stop with unknown error -39 and I have to manually resume the download every few minutes and restart the movie or else  iTunes freezes completely and I have to kill it and restart it and I have also rebooted the PC.
The 24 hour rental countdown has already started since I have already attempted to start watching the movie and it doesn't look like I'm even going to have time to finish watching the movie now.  Every time iTunes crashes and I relaunch it, I now have to re-enter my iTunes password just to get into iTunes.
This has been a complete nightmare and waste of time and waste of the $4.99 rental fee.
Are there any fixes to these issues?

I waited for the download to complete and now when I play the movie there is no sound!!
The movie had sound before even though I could only play a few minutes of the movie at a time.
I have sound everywhere else on the PC including the music in iTunes.  Only the movie playback has no sound.
I have tried rebooting, reinstalling iTunes and I even installed Quicktime because an old thread about iTunes movie rentals playing with no sound suggested installing Quicktime separately, but it has not helped.
This is a very poor experience renting movies through iTunes.

  • What's an average download time for a movie on appletv?

Trying to use AppleTV for the first time and it seems to be taking hours to download.  My network is working properly.

Welcome to the Apple Community Permershall.
There isn't an average as such, it depends on connection speeds.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • ITunes download times RIDICULOUSLY long

It's 7pm in Paris and I thought I'd try out an iTunes movie rental for this evening after dinner. Fat chance. Clicked 'rent' and now iTunes is telling me it will take 5 HOURS to download the movie. Mind you, I just did a Speed Test and my current download capability is 14.07mbps.
Has anyone figured out any solution/explanation for this or is it just Apple's servers? A 5-hour download time is ABSURD for a 2-hour movie!

PS I'm not even downloading the HD version...

  • HT4363 How to get a refund for movie rental

I rented a movie via appleTV and after commiting to the rental found I needed to wait 3 hrs for the download to complete before I could watch.  I came back 2 days later and discovered that no progress had been made.  I changed to lower resolution on settings but could not change the download time on the movie that I already started.  I was willing to let the movie download and comeback later, but do not find any help to accomplish this.  At this point, I will accept a refund and go back to netflixs, but there is no apparent way to request this.  Love apple products...until you need help!

  • Faster download time

I am renting a movie from Itunes and need to know how to speed up the download time to my netbook.  It estimated a 6 hour download time, than a 4 hour download time and now we are back to a 5 hour download time.    Is there anything I can do to speed up the download time?

Yes, it is broadband.  Since I have an air card and access to a wired network, I used the cnet tool and found the wired network to be slightly faster which has decreased the download time to 2 hours.  Anything else I can do?

  • Ipad 2 movie rental issue..."cannot open"

I rented 2 movies for a flight last weekend, and when I went to watch them, I received an error message stating that either of the movies "cannot open".  Apple did refund the rental costs, but I want to know why they didn't work in the first place.  I'm running iOS 5 on my ipad.  I just don't want this to happen again to me.  Any advice as to what happened??

I had the same problem too! I downloaded 7 rental movies for a week's fishing trip in France (NO internet connection for the week). Started playing the 1st one on the first night there, and it seemed just fine. Stopped the film halfway through, and when trying to start it again later that evening, got the dreaded "cannot open" message! Tried all the other films (including the one I'd already started to watch), and got the same "cannot open" message. None of them worked for the entire trip. When I got home the following week and connected to WiFi, they all started playing just fine. Turned the iPad to airplane mode, and started getting the error message again.
I opened a case with Apple Support (who have refunded the payments for all 7 movies) and they're trying to tell me it's a download issue! I'm not so sure - I think the movies are all downloaded just fine - but it seems to be some sort of validation issue requiring internet connection (though, if that's the case, I don't know why the one I'd already started to watch was giving the same error message when I went back to complete it!??)
On their latest support email, they've said the following....
"when you download more than 2 movie rentals at a time they will not be completely downloaded and will not play completely and will show the message "cannot open", therefore I advise you to whenever you download movie rentals always download one at a time"
I'll try this next time, as I did download all 7 rentals at the same time, but I'm still dubious that it's a download issue as I've definitely downloaded multiple rentals previously, and not suffered this problem before

  • Movie rental Q: How many times can you watch the film within 48 hours?

It's just I have 8 hours left on Into The Wild and I fancied watching it a second time, only it is not playing when I click on the thumbnail. It just says "accessing the iTunes store" for a few seconds. I've tried clicking play. Other films appear to work ok, just not this one. I assume that if it doesn't let me watch it a second time iTunes will give me free movie rental credit.

According to the FAQ "Once you've started to watch the movie, you have 24 hours to finish watching the movie (even if you start watching before the download is complete). You can watch the movie as many times as you want within this 24-hour period": iTunes Store movie rental usage

  • HT1657 Movie Rental: Download Time

I just clicked to download a movie rental, and it's going to take 10 hours. Is there a way to cancel the rental or shorten the time?

What does the error message say? (Include error message numbers if you're getting any, please.)

  • If I rent a movie and I later I decide that I want to buy it, Am I going to need to download it once for the rental and a second time for the purchase?

I just wanted to know if I rent a movie and I later I decide that I want to buy it, Am I going to need to download it once for the rental and a second time for the purchase?

You will need to redownload it - rentals expire and are deleted, either 30 days after renting it, or 48 hours (24 hours if you are in the US) after starting to watch it, whichever is the soonest.

  • HT1577 Why am I experiencing long download times for an HD movie rental from itunes?

I have been experiencing long download times for movie rentals from itunes (this time 11 hours).  I have even tried to use ethernet, turn off simultaneous downloads, and shut down my browser, to speed up the time but that didn't help.  My internet download speed is about 7mbps.  Any suggestions?

  • VERY long download times for movie rental

I tried to rent a movie for a recent trip and I was unable to download the movies to put them onto my ipod touch. The download times were 12 to 18 HOURS!!! I left the download going overnight and it still had 10 hours to go in the morning. I have a cable connection and I tried to download at home and again at the hotel that I was staying at. It was the same both places.
I am now heading home and still have not been able to download the movies. Of course the charge went against my account right away. Apple had no problem downloading the money!
Any sugggestions or ideas what may be wrong?

I was having the same trouble today with buying a movie on iTunes. I started last night to download a movie that was over 2 gb. It was moving very, very slow. I checked my download speed several times. I left my computer on overnight to download it. This morning, the files was at 110 mb downloaded!!! After tweaking and checking online for the possible fixes, I gave up and switched over to download via my laptop. It took about 14 minutes to download the darned thing. I think it might be that something is wrong with my desktop. Funny thing is, that I have downloaded a number of movies on my desktop with no problem, except for a rental that would not play long ago.

  • Why would it take 4 hours to download a two hour movie rental.

Why would it take 4 hours to download a two hour movie rental.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It's likely network related, have you checked your internet download speed (speedtest.net) or tried anything to eliminate interference on you local network.
