12" iBook G4 vs 12" PowerBook G4

Hi,
My MacBook has been diagnosed with a logic board fault that is preventing it from charging and will cost a lot to get repaired. Unfortunately this has come at a time when I have no money to do anything about it and I need a laptop for uni work. My budget is about £150, tops. I have found two laptops that seem to be in very good condition within my budget, both are late 2005 models. Their specs are as follows:
iBook G4 12"
1.33GHz G4
768MB RAM memory
40GB Hard Disk capacity
SuperDrive CD/DVD read/write
Mac OS 10.4
(Also comes with all original documentation, long- and short- cord charger, system disks (Which presumably also include iLife?) and a wireless apple pro mouse. However, does not come in original box.)
PowerBook G4 12"
1.5GHz G4
1.25GB RAM memory
80GB Hard Disk capacity
SuperDrive CD/DVD read/write
Mac OS 10.5
(Comes in original box with long- and short- cord chargers, but the listing makes no mention of documentation or system disks. It does come with a copy of iLife '06 pre-loaded, although unsure of whether disks for this will be included.)
I'd basically just like some buying advice and to know as much relevant information about these two models as possible before I make a decision. It's unlikely I'll be coming into any more money any time soon and the laptop will have to last a few months to a year before I'll be able to afford to either get my MacBook repaired or buy a new one. Should I risk buying a laptop that doesn't have the system disks with it? Does either model have any reliability/durability issues to look out for? Which will offer better performance? (I know the PowerBook is more powerful but will it handle 10.5 as well as the iBook will handle 10.4?) Also, I have a personal preference for 10.4 over 10.5 - what is the state of 10.4 these days? I know that Adobe no longer produce flash for 10.4 and that you have to use TenFourFox as a browser....
Thanks in advance for any help or guidance, and sorry about the essay,
LSRW

If you have an older iBook G4 (2004?) those have 256MB RAM on-board (soldered)
and the upgrade path is to add any chip that is correct & supported up to 1024MB.
The last iBook G4 (mid-2005 series) has 512MB soldered on-board so if it has no
upgrade chip in the RAM slot under the keyboard, it would show 512MB installed.
With a total 768MB in the iBook G4 12" 1.33, that may imply a 256MB upgrade chip
in the slot under the keyboard and a 512MB soldered on the logic board. Or, it may
be that the logic board has 256MB and a 512MB upgrade chip was installed.
Also, the older iBook G4 12/14" has a PC2100 upgrade RAM chip instead of PC2700.
The older one that shipped with that spec for upgrade slot (and soldered-in RAM) can
use a PC2700 SO-DIMM but instead of being seen as that higher spec it would be at
the lower speed spec of PC2100.
So it is possible the upgrade chip is 256MB RAM. The System Profiler will show what
occupies the upgrade slot and also the spec of the on-board RAM. There are at least
two paths to open System Profiler (in Utilities folder) as one is via "About this Mac"
and another is from GO in Finder (choose Utilities folder) to look for System Profiler.
Other ways include using Find or Spotlight to search the hard drive boot partition.
By correctly identifying the PowerBook G4, you could hope to find the correct original
grey-label install restore DVD software kit; that should have a Hardware Test, a disc
with included Applications (such as iLife suite, AppleWorks, and so on) though the
iBook G4 (last model, mid-2005) original software kit has a fair selection included with
the Tiger 10.4 system.
With OS X 10.5.8 installed, you could use some later software; a few browser options
exist where the custom build only works in Leopard 10.5.x. There is a patch to help
the very obsolete Flash player plugin appear as a less obsolete 11.5. version; but it
still lags behind anything current. Web pages that support HTML5 can be seen in
TenFourFox, some YouTube content can be seen in version 24+ of that browser. By
default the plugin for Flash does not work. A few users here have suggested to go
and workaround that, to turn it on (old version -- whatever its compromised issues)
is possible. You can be careful what you choose to view or pages you visit, to some
extent, to avoid some kinds of problems. I use TenFourFox and SeaMonkey for PPC.
Older versions of FireFox can run in 10.4 & 10.5, but lack some fair upgrades.
I also have iCab, the last version supported by PPC hardware in either 10.4/10.5.
Anyway, thought I'd say Hi and hope things work out for you!

  • Moving all my data from my old ibook to my new powerbook

Hi, i have recently purchased a 12" powerbook G4 and want to move all my data from my iBook G4. How can i make this happen so that it is set up exactly the same as my iBook including my Mail and all my other settings?
    Thanks Darren

Check to see if the Migration Assistant exists in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder; if so, connect both machines with a FireWire cable, open it and transfer your data over. If you haven't turned the PowerBook on before, you may be given the option to use the Migration Assistant during the setup process.
If the Migration Assistant isn't installed on the PowerBook, or if you don't want to use it, hook up both Macs with a FireWire cable, start up the iBook with the T key held down, open the Users folder on the iBook's hard disk, and locate the folder with your data. Next, open the Users folder on the PowerBook, rename the item with the house icon, drag over the folder from the iBook's hard disk to the Users folder, give it the name previously used by the folder with the house icon, log out, and log back in.

  • Want to load OSX.4 from iBook into my G4 Powerbook

I purchased an iBook with OSX.4. I took the install disks and went to install OSX.4 onto my powerbook and an ALERT came up saying I cannot USE THE DISKS....
    WHY?????
Is ther a way to OVERRIDE THE ALERT
or is OSX.4 ibook install disks only for iBook? and not usable on the Powerbook

    Hi Gordon,
or is OSX.4 ibook install disks only for iBook? and not usable on the Powerbook
That is correct-- the disks shipped with machines are machine-specific.
Anyway, the software license you agreed to says it's illegal to install the OS on more than one machine. You'll have to buy a retail version of Tiger if you want to put it on your PB.

  • Using ibook ram in my powerbook?

    I recently purchased a used 15" PB G4 400 mhz with 640 mb ram.
I have taken steps to maximize performance given the low mhz. My wife will be using it for email, itunes, word processing and possibly some photo viewing (no photoshop or anything like that).
I have upgraded to 10.4.11 (which I believe to be the highest I can go) so I simply want a little more speed.
Anyway, I also have an old G4 12" ibook that needs a new hard drive. I am curious of if I can use any of the ram from that for the powerbook.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Unfortunately I don't know much about the insides of the ibook and besides installing airports cards in both, I haven't opened these up much before.

Thanks a lot. Now I just need to know what I CAN get. I'm finding online that the 400 mhz often isn't listed when compatibility is mentioned.
Based on what I put for specs, can I just get another 512mb stick to match the other? Will that max me out? What is the max?
    Thanks again!

  • IBook G4 vs. PowerBook G4

    Hello,
I just recently ran into a little cash, and I was going to buy either a PowerBook G4 or iBook G4 from eBay. I can afford either, and either way I would be forfeiting my pre-ordered copy of the Halo 4 Limited Edition...Which do you think would be worth it? Halo, the iBook, or the PowerBook?
I would mostly be using it for word processing and web browsing, no heavy tasks like video editing or something. I hear the PowerBook has better screen resolution, which I value greatly, but the iBook is about forty dollars cheaper...I also like the look of the PowerBook, but the iBook is more portable and a large margin cheaper. The iBook is $140.45 and the PowerBook is $185. I would wait for Halo to come out and buy one of them, but seeing as they're listed for less than a week, and someone could buy them in that time frame, I would just like to hear your guys's opinion on whether Halo or the iBook or PowerBook is worth it.
    Thanks!

Check the other specifications for the specific machines you are buying.  You really want one that is pretty much maximized for all features to try to keep up in a world 8 (?) years after those machines came out.
I was recently given two PBs.
One is a 14" PB G4 that has a dead drive and the hassle of installing one plus the cost of a drive for it just isn't worth it.  It also only has 512MB RAM which is realistically at the very low end for any version of OSX, even Tiger and Leopard.  I could sink $200 in fixing it and then I'd have a $185 machine.
The other one (12" 1.2 GHz if I recall, with around 1 GB RAM) has a 40 GB HD at 5400 rpm and Leopard OS.  It takes forever (well, at least a minute) to boot.  With Leopard OS and a few applications it's already around 15GB.  Factor in needing to leave around 10 GB free at all times for general OSX happiness, that leaves me with about 15 GB for stuff.  In the modern day that's not much.  I dump a couple of days of photos nd video from my camera and it's full. I used it on a short trip a week ago and it was okay but left me really wishing I had my G4 desktop.  It was better than nothing but it is going to sit on the shelf between trips when I absolutely need a notebook model.
I guess what I'm saying is, don't get a machine you won't want to use, and don't get one that you're going to have to sink a huge amount into in order to get it running well.

  • Ibook to powerbook

    hi-
i want to connect my ibook g4 to my powerbook (lombard) via ethernet cord. i want to get some files off of my powerbook. is there any way i can do that? also, i want to put mac os 10.4 on my powerbook, i have the cds but my powerbook doesn't have a dvd drive, just a cd-rom. what otherway can i put tiger on my powerbook? can i do it by the ethernet cord? please go through this step by step, and i;ll try not to get lost
    thanks, Jordan

If you purchased a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you can download this form to exchange your DVD for a set of CDs. You cannot install the copy of Tiger that came with your iBook on another computer. Unfortunately, Tiger is not supported on the "Lombard" PowerBooks. One of the minimum requirements is built-in FireWire which the Lombard does not have. Take a look at the Tech Specs for Tiger.
Which version of the Mac OS is running on your PowerBook? Yes, you can connect the two computers with an Ethernet cable (no need to find a "crossover" Ethernet cable, the iBook will route the data correctly on a standard "patch" cable) and share files. But the steps you take to set up file sharing depend on the versions of Mac OS that you're using.

  • Change from iBook to powerbook? Tough choice!

Sorry if some of you think the question does not belong here. But I really want to get some suggestions from somebody who had or are having the same problem as me.
I have been using my iBook for more than two years and everything is almost perfect. However, I am really attracted by the new powerbook G4 (12 inches) for no specific reason. Just want to buy it and play around with it. So, according to your experiences, how much benefit can I get by changing from my current iBook to a new Powerbook G4? I will appreciate any comments and suggestions.
And, if I do buy a new powerbook G4, how can I deal with this iBook? Is there any place I can easily trade in? Does Apple have such service to recycle used laptops?
    Thanks a lot.
    iBook G4 12 inches   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   800 MHz; 640 MB DDR SDRAM

I can be a daunting choice to make. Odds are you iBook works just fine, maybe a little slow but does the job you want it to do. The Powerbook is sexxy though and is a bit faster with a few more options than your iBook.
Although I would also have to say wait a little while longer until the Intel Platforms come out. Rumor mills are already saying that a major unveilment of the new systems will be made as soon as January. And with our boy Steve, it usually means that something is going to come out quick. So if your a "gottahavitnow" guy, that is what I would really it up. Yeah you can have the 12" powerbook now, but think of what you can have in just a short while, be the first one on the block with something that has never been made before!
I know it's hard once you got your mind on something. Being a technofreak as well I understand, I get a new phone every 4 months, have 3 computers in my house, and even 2 iPods for no good reason really. It is like crack, but the better crack is right around the corner my friend.

  • IBook compared to PowerBook compared to iMac compared to G5

    Hello
Just thought i would share my tests. Using logic express, the aim is to open as much Guitar Amp (the express one, not the pro one) and not getting the "Core Audio overload" message.
I tried on my girlfriend's ibook, on my current powerbook, an iMac at apple expo and a G5 i owned before selling it for a powerbook.
    12" iBook 1.33ghz bus 133mhz 512mb ram = 13 guitar amps
    15" PowerBook 1.5ghz bus 167mhz 1.5gb ram = 14 guitar amps
    17" iMac G5 2 ghz bus (?) 2gb ram = 24 guitar amps
    PowerMac G5 2 X 2 ghz bus (?) 2.5 gb ram = 48 guitar amps
it gives you a rough idea of the performance to expect. don't know about the new G5 though.

    Hi!
    Interesting test results.
At least it shows how incompetitive the PowerBooks are.
(Even the new ones that came today)
Your test pb even has three times more memory than the iBook.
The difference between the iMac and the PM is also interesting.
I never thought a dual machine would be twice as fast as a single cpu.
(I think bus speeds are 600/700 and 900/1000)
But, of course this is an isolated-non real life- test. If you did a test with Space designer, Sculpture or Ultrabeat you may get a different picture.
BTW, were all four computers set to same audio buffer?
I mean if the the iBook was to buffer 1024 and the PB to buffer 128,
that could explain the non existing difference.

  • Moving MacWrite from old Powerbook to new iBook

I just had a new hard drive installed on my iBook G4, running OS X 10.4.11. I backed up my personal data, but figured I'd be able to reinstall all my applications since I had original software.
However, I was unable to reinstall MacWrite II for OS 9. I only have a 3-1/4 inch disk with the program, and the disk drive won't work in OS X.
I tried to network the iBook with my old Powerbook G3 running OS 9.2 but they wouldn't connect. I copied the MacWrite files onto my flash drive, and even though they looked perfectly fine when the drive was hooked up to the Powerbook, they didn't on the iBook.
The iBook's OS 9 doesn't seem to be recognizing MacWrite as an OS 9 program.
I can't figure out how I made this work when I originally bought the iBook two years ago. I really need MacWrite so I can get access to old text files. Microsoft Word doesn't have an appropriate translator.
    Help?!?

I copied the MacWrite files onto my flash drive, and even though they looked perfectly fine when the drive was hooked up to the Powerbook, they didn't on the iBook.
Could the Flash Drive still be in MS/Dos format? That'll lose half of most files. If so, just format it MacOS/HFS+.
A few other APPs had MacWrite import capabilities...
    Adobe PageMaker 6.5 here.
    Word Perfect 3
    Mac Publisher
    Quark 4
    Claris/Dataviz document converter.
    Likely many more too.
The iBook's OS 9 doesn't seem to be recognizing MacWrite as an OS 9 program.
Was this perchance copied over on that Flash Drive?

  • Transfer Netscape email from iBook to PowerBook

I am switching from using Netscape for email on a iBook G4 to a PowerBook G4. The iBook has Netscape 7.2 with bookmarks and emails. I can’t get Netscape on the PowerBook to recognize the iBook email files that I copied over. What I did was to copy over (via Firewire) the Mozilla folder in “computer”/”hard drive”/users/”name”/Library from iBook to PowerBook.
When I start Netscape on the PowerBook Netscape acts as if a new user profile is being set up and won’t find the user profile that was copied with the Mozilla folder. There must be another file that needs to be copied that I am missing. What is it?

Your profile is contained at Documents->Mozilla->Profiles. Here's an article on moving Netscape mail that may help, and it includes macs: http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/email/manage/newprogram.html#utility

  • Which 12in laptop? ibook or powerbook

I've had an iPod for a while now and I want to make a switch for my computer as well. I've been doing research for a couple weeks and have decided to get a 12in model. At first I was going to get a 14in ibook until I found out that the resolution is the same as the 12in. Then I was going to get a 12in ibook until I found out you can't get a superdrive upgrade. I was set on a 12in powerbook but then read a review that suggested getting an ibook and upgrading the HD and RAM. So, if I was willing to stick with a 12in ibook (combo drive), and add ram and a larger hard drive would this still be comparable to the 12in powerbook. I noticed less VRam on the ibook but is this going to be signifigant enough to pay the extra few hundred for the powerbook? I know this might be left to my own personal usage but I'm very interested hearing some other opinions. Thanks, Clay

This is a real difficult question to answer without really knowing what exactly you're looking to get out of your new laptop. If you're going to be doing some graphics-intensive work, video work and creating DVD's, a Powerbook is definetly the way to go, with the faster processor and all. If you are not looking for all of those, though, an iBook may be the way to proceed. I actually just made the decision about three weeks ago to purchase a 12' iBook over the 12' Powerbook. I chose the iBook over the Powerbook, first off because I'm a poor college student, and the iBook has the power to do everything I really need it to do, and a little more. My purposes for having a laptop are to write papers, use iTunes, surf the internet, and use Adobe from time to time, so as you can see, I'm not really using graphics-intensive programs, which is why I chose to go the iBook route.
I did read all of the posts on this site also, and after searching topics such as iBook vs. Powerbook, for example, I was able to read other people's experiences with choosing between the two laptops, and thus, was able to make a decision, partly based on what I read online.
Now, you may say to yourself...sure, if you pay $200, you can get a Powerbook with a faster processor and whatnot, but $200.00 is relative to the person purchasing the product. I decided that $200-300 was a little too steep for me, considering I was also planning to purchase a case for my computer and Microsoft Office also, but for others, again, $200 may be really not that much, considering the improved performance in the Powerbook.
So if I were either one of you, I would reassess your needs out of a laptop. I mean, I chose the iBook, but honestly, either way you go, you will be purchasing a Mac, and that is a start to a larger light at the end of the tunnel.
That's my two cents, hopefully that kind of helped your situation.

  • Do you guys sell ibooks and powerbooks

    i just need to know

Neither iBook G4, nor iBook G3 nor any Powerbook will run Mac OS X 10.6 or later, or sync with iOS 6 or later.
Your signature says you have iOS 6, and that may be of interest to you.   If you need a Mac that can sync with your iOS device, then you need a MacBook or MacBook Pro.  Macs in general will not run any Mac operating system older than shipped with them.   http://www.powermax.com/ is another place for used or refurbished Macs.  Note any Mac with 10.6.8 or earlier should come prebundled with its own original installer discs to be able to install the operating system over again.
October 23 (Late), 2012 iMacs, EMC#2496 iMacs, October 24 (Late), 2011 MacBook Pros, July 20 (Mid), 2011 MacBook Airs and Mac Minis, June 11 (Mid), 2012 Mac Pros, and later Macs all were prebundled with internet install operating systems only.  Previous Macs had prebundled discs you can purchase from AppleCare.

You actually can transfer file using ethernet and a regular cable (no loopback), if you setup private IP address for each machine (say, 192.168.10.1 for Box A and 192.168.10.2 for Box B)
I use it all of the time to move files between machines when I don't have a LAN around
I use SSH, I'm not sure about that Lombard, but SSH (client & server) it is standard on any recern Os X release, get a client for the Lombard, and setup on the Sharing option of the System Preferences, choose 'Services' and enable 'Remote Login'.
There are graphical clients, but I'm not sure if there is one available for the Lombard.

  • Quality difference display iBook vs Powerbook

I'm considering buying either an iBook 14" or a Powerbook 15". I like the Powerbook very much, but it's a bit too expensive for what you get. I like the iBook as well, but the display seems inferior to me. Am I correct that the 14" iBooks display is much less brighter and crisper than the display of the 15" Powerbook 15?
    Martijn

You are correct, the quality of the Powerbook 15" screen is superior to the iBook. Also the 14" ibook has a resolution of 1024x768, while the current 15" Powerbook is 1440x960. You may also like the widescreen ratio better.
Having said all that carefully read these forums about the alternating line issue on the current hi-res 15" Powerbook, go look at one and make sure it won't bother you. If it does you may want to look at the previous generation 15" which has a lower resolution, but still superior display to the iBook (some may even argue superior to current generation 15").
    Good luck deciding!

  • IBook HDD on Powerbook?

    Will a iBook 13" HDD fit in a Powerbook G4 12"?
My girlfriends Powerbook crashed, and her iBook's powersupply broke. So I was thinkin about switching HDD's, but will a iBook HDD fit in a Powerbook?

In view of the fact that a new power adapter for the iBook wouldn't cost much and the Powerbook's hard drive may still be OK, it seems premature to think of incapacitating the iBook to get the Powerbook running again.
Have you actually established that the Powerbook's hard drive has failed or is failing? How?
