12 inch G4 PB firewire crash
I just updated my PB to Tiger. Used to back up to a firewire drive no problem. Now when I plug in the drive or start with it plugged in the system crashes. When I unplug and restart it's ok.
The same rive works fine when plugged into my G5 running the same version of Tiger, so I guess it's hardware specific tothe PB.
Is there a fix?
Hello,
I had a problem with my firewire port wasn't showing up at all after a restart of the computer because of a software install and I thought it was the new software that caused the problem but I read that you can fix some port problems by holding down the buttons "command, option, P, R" at startup and what it will do is automatically restart your computer and you will hear the chime again and once you hear the chime for a second time you can let go of the butons.
What that did was reset the power managment unit on your powerbook. I didn't have the same exactly problem that you are suffering but it may wokr for you its worth a shot to try.
Good Luck, Kenny

I have an iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) with a 3.4 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB of memory.
Every day since Tuesday, the computer has been randomly crashing once or twice a day to a black screen. It doesn't matter what I am doing (surfing the web in Safari, listening to music in iTunes, etc). If there is music playing, I will get a constant stutter of audio in addition to the black screen.
When restarting the computer, it instantly goes back to either a black or gray screen after the Apple logo passes. Attempting to reset the PRAM or SMC does not fix the issue from reoccuring and I usually have to keep the computer unplugged for an extended period of time before I can get it back up and running. Sometimes I have to boot the computer up into AHT (Apple Hardware Test) or Internet Recovery to get the computer running back to normal.
When running both a normal or extended AHT, all of the hardware that is tested ends up passing. When running Disk Utility, it shows there are no hard drive related issues.
The question that I have is this an issue related to the AMD Radeon 6970M Video Card?
Back in March, my iMac's display began suffering issues with greyish smudge marks behind the glass alongside issues where it would freeze and become distorted alongside the black screen. When I brought it into an Apple Authorized Service Provider back in March of this year to have everything checked out, they replaced the display and nothing else as they could not replicate any of the graphical issues despite numerous calls to AppleCare. I ended up doing an erase and install of Mavericks and the 10.9.2 update ended up being a temporary fix for the issue.
Should I call back AppleCare and tell them I need my video card replaced or is it something else? The last panic log was from 05/15/2014:

FireWire crashes, and restart is required
I rcently bought two new 250GB external HDDs. They have both FireWire, and USB support, but since USB is all being used, i need the FireWire.
The problem comes when I turn them BOTH on. They both work fine when only one is on, but when they are both turned on, i get 'Device Removal' warning, they both disappear and I can only get them back after a restart. I also get the problem when using them in a 'Daisy Chain'.
Any Ideas?
Cheers, JohnThanks for your help! I tried the tips in the article (repair disk, fix plist files, clear cache and log), but am still running into the same problem.
The hard drive checked out fine when I ran Disk Utility on it, both partitions (non-bootable) were fine when I did Repair Disk.
I tried running two other movies that are on the same hard drive, one was fine, but the other showed up with the same problem about 24 minutes into it. So it looks like it might be more than just localized to the one movie.
The other partition seems fine, that's where I keep my music and I haven't run into problems except when iMovie starts freaking out. Then iTunes crashes also - not sure if this indicates that the files on the two separate partitions are somehow connected?
Any ideas on how to fix this or what may have caused it? -
My Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display crashes sometimes when connected to an external monitor
My almost-new Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display goes black and shuts down sometimes when connected to my external monitor. (The first time it did this was when connected to a projector.) They have replaced the motherboard but it still happens sometimes. The computer and monitor both come back on after a few seconds.

My MacBook Pro 15-inch Mid 2012 keeps crashing. Can someone help me?
Since a week or so my MacBook Pro crashes every day. The screen freezes and I can't do anything. I have been looking for crash logs but I haven't found a log which corresponds with the time my computer crashes. I have tried to reset my 'System Management Controller' and I ran a 'Apple Hardware Test', both to no avail.
Here are the specifics of my MacBook Pro:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,1
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 16 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP91.00D3.B08
SMC Version (system): 2.1f173
Serial Number (system): C0*******1G3
Hardware UUID: DD678E52-1A55-5319-8D66-71D1F614506F
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
I hope someone can help me solving the crashes or can tell where the problem lies.
<Edited By Host>If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
MacBook Pro 13-inch 2012 Yosemite - Random Crashes and restarts
Good afternoon,
My Macbook Pro 2012 running Yosemite randomly crashes and restarts itself with no pattern or discernible cause. It has previously gone into the Apple Store several times for fault finding and come back with nothing that they could find.
Attached to the MacBook are a large monitor and a Evoluent upright USB mouse.
I typically run LibreOffice, iwork numbers and Adobe Reader, in addition to emails, calendar and safari
MacBook Specs:
- Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
- 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
- 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
The latest crash report is below. If anyone has any similar experience, advice or fixes it would be most appreciated.
Thanks, Dave

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Good afternoon,
My Macbook Pro 2012 running Yosemite randomly crashes and restarts itself with no pattern or discernible cause.

Fcp6 + XL-H1 + basic firewire = crash during capture ?
I'm trying to capture 1080i50 footage and fcp has crashed a few times during capture.
Anybody else having this problems?
Any workarounds?
Trashing prefs? Anything else?
Or are 10.5 + fcp6 + XL-H1 just incompatible to each other?Sounds like a similar problem as mine .. it captures just fine with basic NTSC. but crashes with any HDV setup .. I'm using Sony FX1 .. I went so far as to reformat my macpro' .. tried to install Tiger, but it wouldn't allow it. Apparently it is not compatible with the new Intel processor's. Tried capture without any updates .. still crashed.

I've got a new Firewire drive used for TimeMachine which sometimes won't allow my iMac G5 iSight 20" to boot or it hangs. As soon as I unplug it it will boot or resume. I switched cables to a shorter one and that helped but it's still happening once in a while... below is the console right before it happened this morning. Those notification timeouts continue all night so that's why I think this is when it happened. Any ideas what the note about not matching cookies means? How can this not be the backup volume? Time machine does point to it... There are 4 users here though so maybe that's related??

If USB2 works for you then that should not be a problem. USB2 is faster than firewire for small files. Firewire is faster with large files. This is why firewire drives are used in the video industry. -
Random FireWire Crashes...
Hey guys, i have noticed when i plug in my portable firewire drive it hangs up my computer when I try to write to it. It is a western digital and it hooks up and mounts fine, but sometimes when i try to copy files over or save onto it, my machine will freeze.
I have to reboot, then it hangs at the grey screen. I have to reboot again and then its fine. This has happened twice randomly, any ideas?Hello mrpoonerson,
If you have any other FW devices, especially iSight, follow the above permissions routine. Then, shut down the computer. Disconnect all FW devices, disconnect the wallplug/charger, pull the battery and let the PB "rest" for 15-20 min. Re-install the battery, power-cord and start the PB, again after the re-start, repairing permissions. Reconnect only the ext. FW HD and let me know if it still hangs or if the FW circuit reset helped.
Respectfully,
Bill Gallagher -
New PowerBook (15 inch Dual Layer) randomly crashes.
I have had my new powerbook for a total of a day and a half and I can't get it to stop crashing.
I have already done the following:
1) run all the apple hardware tests - no errors found.
2) removed RAM and swapped the sticks around.
3) reset my PMU
Any thoughts anyone?
It never seems to crash the same way twice in a row - one time it will just freeze, the next time it will display the reset message. Once during on of the crashes I got a System Failure message with code=00000007 and Exception state csv=0x24EC7000 but this has only happened once.
It seems to agrivate the problem when I connect USB drives or other external volumes and possibly only after I have launched the dashboard...
I have never experienced ANY problems with apple hardware like this before.
Help.I seem to have found the problem.
Despite the fact that the PowerBook hardware test did not find any issues with the memory - it seems that in fact the memory was the issue after all.
Add Kingston Value RAM to the list of products that won't work in the new PowerBooks. (Which is really, really strange because with DDR2 i kinda thought that all RAM would work in all DDR2 compliant machines...) -
15 inch 2011 Macbook Pro crashing under mild stress
I've been encountering numerous hardware problems with my 15inch 2011 Macbook Pro for the last year. Problems such as the laptop overheating before going into sleep mode when I close the lid (which caused my hard drive to corrupt). My laptop has also become extremely sensitive to being bumped. A slight bump while the machine is in use and it'll give me a ram failure 3 beep code. I've used 3 different sets of ram and it still suffers. And now within the last 2 months my computer seems unable to handle any mild processing. The system will start to slow down significantly when I open more then one tab in my web browser at a time. The system also runs extremely hot under these circumstances with the fans running at high speeds and ultimately leading to a system crash where the screen freezes and all I hear is erratic static noise from the speakers until I force shutdown. I can't even watch 1080p videos on youtube without risking a crash! I am aware of the GPU failure that is currently affecting thousands of 2011 macs that are the same model as mine. I am trying to diagnose if my computer is also encountering GPU failure. The symptoms of my computer are not the same as what others are reporting in the GPU case, but I have no idea what else could be causing it. Any help would be great!
Thanks for your time.If your MBP is experiencing kernel panics, use these instructions and post one:
http://support.apple.com/en-us/ht2546
Without actual temperature readings, one cannot determine if you have an issue with heat. Download iStat menus:
http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set %CPU to display values from high to low. When your MBP gets hot, post images of both for review.
Ciao. -
Does the 15 inch Macbook Pro still crash?
I am planning on getting a Macbook but I wanted to wait until they resolved this issue...
Firstly, this is not Apple but a user to user help forum. If there were any issues unresolved we would not know about them. You will have to purchase the product and find out for yourself. Of course this assumes there actually were a problem.
Speculation about future products is forbidden here. -
Programs crashing after security update 2014-002
I installed the latest security update for Mavericks today and since then I've had two programs crash repeatedly.
In iTunes, when I click on "Add to Library," iTunes shuts down.
In Photoshop Elements 12, when I try to save a photo, the program shuts down.
Has anyone else had similar problems? I can't think of anything else that would be causing this, as it hasn't happened before.
Note: I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro with Retina.Bump. I'm having a similar issue.
Since installing the latest Mavericks security update, my Retina MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2013) has crashed and restarted a minimum of once per day for no apparent reason. -
My MacBook Pro 13 inch seems to be crashing more and more often. In this case I was watching a youtube video, something I don't do often, and BAM! crashed, no warning, no slowing, no nothing, just rebooted on its owm. Any ideas/help/etc would be much appreciated. Also the only other sympotons of substance is that Safari crashes.
Here is my crash report:

I thought reinstalling the OS will help the issue, took help from Geniusbar at Apple store to do a clen install of the OS, but I'm running into the same issue after a copuple of days. The system was almost idle, only Safari was running when the issue happened. After it came back up after the restart, Safari crashed again, trying to use Firefox to see if it helps in some way. I plan to try going back to OS X Lion next. Can't work on a machine that crashes intermittently.
