'12 Mini to Older Receiver via Optical - Can't get 5.1 Surround

Yet another "Can't get surround sound via Toslink" question...
System:
2012 Mac Mini
Video to Sharp HDTV via HDMI
Audio to Pioneer VX-D608 Receiver via Optical
I have the cables connected properly. Video is flawless. Audio is being transmitted to the receiver, which "sees" an AC-3 or DTS signal and automatically switches into those modes according to the format encoded with the files. But for some reason, I am only getting sound out of the front speakers.
I have tested the receiver and all (5.1) speakers are functional.
It is as if I am only sending the front right and front left signals via AC-3 or DTS.
I have spent about 40 hrs playing with various audio software arrangements, including Plex, VLC, Perian (AC-3/DTS passthrough), Soundflower and Soundflowerbed routing.
Currently, in Audio MIDI Setup I am using the "Built-In Output", set to Encoded Digital Audio. The Format appears to switch depending on the file I am playing. The speakers can only be configured to Stereo, none of the surround options present themselves, which I understand is OK because the AC-3 or DTS is passed to the receiver via an encoded stereo signal.
My VLC player is playing an AC-3 or DTS track, and the output is set to the Built-In Output (Encoded).
As I mentioned, the receiver "sees" DTS or AC-3, but the sound won't come out all 5.1 speakers even though I know they are functioning.

If the receiver is seeing an AC-3 or DTS signal, it indicates
that the software is passing through the encoded audio.
These streams cannot be altered or manipulated, especially DTS
which is a very tightly licensed codec, by the software or the Mini.
So, if the receiver is seeing the digital audio as AC-3 or DTS, the problem is
not with the Mini.

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

Yes if the messages are sent to an ID which is in the receive section of Settings > Messages > Send and Receive on both devices.

The iPad 1 is only able to do basic AirPlay, many providers of programming have blocked their apps from working with AirPlay.

I accidentally deleted Garageband on my MacBook Pro, version 10.6.8. The new version of Garageband is only compatible with 10.9 and above. Is it possible to still get the older version? OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD for my computer

The new version of GarageBand is only compatible with 10.9 and above.
If your Mac can run MacOS X 10.6.8, it probably can be upgraded to Yosemite, if you don't have to stick to Snowleopard for other reasons.
Is it possible to still get the older version?
Amazon or eBay are still selling iLife '11 installer disks, and you could reinstall GarageBand from these DVDs. But it will be expensive.
Have you checked your backups, if you can restore GarageBand from a backup?
OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD that came with my computer so that I can reinstall GarageBand?
Sometimes the AppleStore Support will replace missing installer CDs for a fee.

Apple TV to Receiver via OPTICAL AUDIO

I am trying to hook up apple TV. I reand the HDMI to a splitter and I have picture. I need to run audio to my Onkyo txsr501 receiver via the optical cable. I have tried 2 different cables and can not get audio.
any suggestions,
is there something in settings to use optical audio?

You would use optical when connecting to a DVI device for video or when not using the HDMI port at all. The latter is how I've always used my ATV, as an audio-only Airplay bridge that allows my bedroom stereo to stream from my iPod Touch and iTunes on my PC.
Interesting tidbit: It is possible to output audio over DVI, such that a DVI(device)->HDMI(TV, receiver, etc) cable or a plain HDMI cable attached to the device with a DVI/HDMI adapter carries audio, and the target HDMI device won't know the difference between this DVI->HDMI connection and a normal HDMI->HDMI connection. Many PC video cards can do this. This is possible because it's a straight-through connection using exactly the same wires. Most devices won't transmit or receive audio over DVI, and that's why DVI is mainly known as the video-only connection that is compatible with HDMI.

You'll have to either call AppleCare...they'll have a record, or go back to the Genius bar where your phone was replaced.

Call the Apple Store and inquire. I believe I read that it can take several weeks for them to send the card, but I'm not certain. The store should be able to tell you.

Can I get 5.1 Surround Sound from Mac to Apple TV?

I have an iPad, iPhone and an Apple TV, and I love airplay, such a great feature!
I'm thinking of replacing my desktop for a mac and I was wondering; if I had a 5.1 surround encoded video file on my mac, would I be able to push the whole screen to Apple TV through mirroring and still get the 5.1 sound output to my audio receiver and speaker setup?
I'm NOT asking if I can airplay an mp4 encoded movie through iTunes at 5.1; I know I can already do that on my desktop and it works fine.
What I'm looking for is the ability to simply mirror what's playing on the mac to my hdtv through Apple TV, while still retaining the full 5.1 surround mix and outputting it to my audio receiver (i.e. Without having to convert the file type and drag it or play it in iTunes).
So before I take the plunge and spend over a grand on a mac, is this possible?
If this isn't possible I will probably just get a Mac mini and plug it directly into my receiver via hdmi. I can't see any problems doing it that way (I hope!)
Any info here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your assistance, but I spent quite some time researching this before posting, and the post you link to (which I've already read) doesn't actually answer my question, that person is asking about his wireless speakers receiving individual sound channels through airplay. Other discussions, which I've also looked at, seem inconclusive.
I was really posting in the hopes of finding anyone who had personal experience of trying to play a fullscreen, 5.1 surround video file using airplay mirroring from their mac to their Apple TV, and if they received 5.1 sound.

So I'm running bootcamp on my Mid-2010 Mac Pro and I can't get Dolby Surround Sound to run from the Realtek HD Audio Manager. Is there a way to produce true Dolby 5.1? I understand this may be more bootcamp related than to the actual hardware itself but I figured this is the best place to start troubleshooting this.

try this: go to Windows Sound, then playback devices, then click on speakers icon (should have realtek as default). Click on that, and click configure
if realtek has a sound manager, try clicking on that, and a config dialog might appear

Macbook to LG television via hdmi - can;t get it to connect

I have borrowed a friend's cables to see if I can connect my macbook to my LG television. I have the apple mini DVI to HDMI cable and the belkin HDMI to DVI cable and the television tuned to hdmi1 channel - there is only one hdmi port but i've checked all the input settings,
Should i be changing any settings on my macbook? The tv is just showing as no signal and it's driving me mad!

There is no Apple mini-DVI to HDMI adapter, so you either have a 3rd-party adapter or a different Apple adapter.
Are you certain these cables work?
Have you used the adapter before?
