12" Powerbook - I can't quit you, Baby

I'm in love with my 12" G4 PowerBook. It's the most beautiful portable computer ever designed. Look at the keyboard. All the keys are beautifully bevelled, and they are set side by side with no dead space between them. Look at the detail where the keyboard comes to the edge of the computer. Just a thin rim, right up close to the outermost keys.
Now look at this horrible iBook I got recently. Hideous flat keys with oval edges, and no bevel. Dead space between each key. Lots of unused flat space around the keys and at the edges.
I can't run Leopard Intel on my 12" Powerbook but I'm staying with the PowerBook anyway because when I have to sit looking at something and touching it, I want it to be beautiful, not a turkey like the iBook is.
I'm hoping Apple will soon come out with a very small portable that looks as good as the 12" PB. Thanks for listening.

I know exactly how you feel about the 12" PowerBook. I have two other Apple notebooks (a 15" PB and a MacBook), yet this little gem is now my main notebook - even though it was originally purchased as a reserve.
Although it is used primarily to manage and edit my photography, it is increasingly being used for other purposes as well (ie. graphic design). Whilst the other notebooks I have are just as capable, their physical size and other hardware ailments really detract from them.
I still run Tiger on my PB and it is utterly reliable and stable. Yes, it can do with as much RAM as you can afford to give it. A good, fast and capacious hard drive will also do wonders. I've just recently been trying out a 250GB Western Digital as my 100GB Travelstar is almost full now.
Personally I don't think that Leopard adds much value to what I do on the PB. Time Machine and Spaces may be nice but SuperDuper! and some self control seems to be working fine for me.
Whilst I think the MacBook Air is very nice, it is too big and too compromised to be a 12" PB replacement and, sadly, there is nothing currently from Apple that is a worthy successor. I hate to say this, but I'm more taken with the HP 2133 Mini-Note PC form factor. I can even imagine a glowing Apple logo on the back of it's aluminium LCD screen. Ugh... blasphemy.

Has anyone else developed the problem of an over-sensitive MacBook AIr cursor? In the last few days mine has developed a mind of its own, and when you move it to the desired spot it can jump quite randomly. In mail, I try reply but it's jumped to "fwd"!

Powerbook G4 Can't "See" Wireless Signal from Ubee Modem/Router

I was given a G4 Powerbook while out of town and it found the wireless signal in an apartment complex and a major airport just fine. But upon returning home it can't "see" the signal from my (Time Warner, Road Runner Extreme) Ubee modem/router. My Mac Mini's Airport sees the Ubee wireless signal fine, but the older Powerbook G4 can't. (The Airport signal in the menu bar has "bars" but they are grayed out.
Can an older G4 connect with the newer Ubee modem/router? Are there security settings that will allow this?

CRMDVM -- Thanks for the helpful info -- you are probably right on both counts:
The apartments where I picked up a signal is in an "old folks" apt. complex, meaning the router I was picking up was probably old -- compatible with the G4 lineage. And the Atlanta airport probably has a wireless system to allow the vast number of old and new computers that people carry to connect.
My Mac Mini connects via WPA2 Personal security code, and I set the G4 to the same security (in the Network preference pane) but still nothing. The Airport wireless icon in the menu bar is still grayed out -- it isn't the "blank" icon as when Airport is turned off. It has the wireless wave lines in the icon, but just grayed out.
Maybe the G4 is just too old to "see" the newer wireless signal from the new modem/router.
Thanks again for your help -- you definitely provided more than I knew. (btw, I'm just above you in Union County in Stallings).

PowerBook G4 can't see external hard drive

All of a sudden, my PowerBook G4 can no longer see my external hard drive (Maxtor 160 GB drive). The drive doesn't appear in the Finder, and it doesn't mount on the desktop. Thus, I have no way of accessing the files on my external hard drive.
I can see the external hard drive when I launch Disk Utility (and also when I launch TechTool Pro), so I know the hard drive and the USB connections are working.
Can someone please help on this?? I've tried unplugging everything and rebooting with no results. Thank you.

I had the same problem but I resolve the issue by reloading quicktime. There is a quicktime 7.5.5 for os 10.5.8, I download it from apple and install it. After it was installed, itune launched by itself with no problems. Hope it works for you.

I can't sync my Baby HUI with logic

I recently purchased a Mackie Baby HUI control surface to use with Logic Express 9.
First, just to clear up a few things. I have downloaded the most recent Logic update 9.1.7. I have the most current drivers for my MIDI interface.
So, i've followed the instructions in the Logic manual about a dozen times right now for setting up a Baby HUI. When i do this all of the buttons and pots function as they are supposed to; pans, sends, transport, master select, solo, mute. They all work. The only thing that doesn't work are the faders. If i start Logic with all of the faders in the up position it will move them down to the bottom on its own. However, if i move the faders there is no corresponding fader movement within Logic. If i have volume automation written into the track the faders will not follow the automation.
I have checked the Baby HUI in another software DAW and the faders work great (although this other DAW doesn't have support as they are missing the access to the transport and master section buttons.
What can i do within Logic to get it to recognize the fader movement? I've already reinstalled Logic 3 times and reset the computer today and none of that seems to help.

I've been a Fireworks user for over 10 years and just switched to Photoshop. I cannot find a setting that will enable all my file windows to reopen when I quit Photoshop. This is really a problem since I often work on several files at the same time.
Please let me know if the feature exists or point me to where I can post a message for a new feature to be implemented. The feature is a must for any designer working on large projects.

There is no such functionality. You could perhaps create a script that stores that info in a custom text file and arranges them accordingly in the workspace, but that's as good as it gets...

Whenever I am trying to get onto my newly WEP protected network, I get a message saying that there was an error joining the network.
When I do the same on my Powerbook15, I can type in my password and I get online no problem.

Os x mavericks install frozen, can't quit

Tried installing os x mavericks onto my early 2009 macbook. I am stuck at the install screen with a message saying "completing installation... your computer will restart automatically" but after waiting here for a long time nothing has happened. I can't quit either because it doesn't give me a startup disk to select. I'm just so confused because I just received this product in the mail last night and every time I reboot or try to turn it off I am brought back to the install screen. Please help

1. Reset your computer’s PRAM
2. The installation may have gotten as far as creating a Recovery partition. If so, you can start up from it by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Reinstall OS X.
3. If the above steps fail, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Very likely if you bought the machine used, as you apparently did.

If the same website is opening each time you launch a browser (Safari?) hold down the shift key as you launch to prevent previous pages from opening.
Have a look at your settings in Safari > Preferences. Especially General and Privacy.
Reset Safari to remove cookies and other stored data.

Have a look at your settings in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

Several ways to force quit when you can't quit an app normally.
Go to your Apple menu (top left in your screen) then from the drop down menu select Force Quit.
You can also force quit an app using the Activity Monitor app located in /Applications/Utilities.
You should be able to shut down your Mac by holiding down the power button until the screen goes black. Then restart as usual.
