12" Powerbook or a MacBook Pro?

Currently use: Desktop PM Dual Core 2 ghz w/4.5 gb ram + 256 video, very dependent on adobe cs2.
Looking to get a dependable laptop within a month with no serious issues or boring lag. Is the 12" PB for me? I can use an Edu. discount. You always read about numerous problems in the forums so I want to get a feasible scoop on the 12" PB. Mainly plan on using AI, PSD, PDF, Mail, Wireless - Safari + Firefox, MS Office, that's it really.
Wouldn't prefer to get the MBP because it's the first run and I assume plenty of issues will float on through, nevermind the forced use of Rosetta to get certain apps going.
Thoughts? Thanks!

I will try to answer these questions for ya. From the other post, the one that I struggle with to have enough desktop space without the extra display is Final Cut. You need more space to work with that to be efficient.
1) Can a non Apple LCD screen be used optimally with a PB? Or do I lose performance? Yes! I do and I don't loose any performance at all!
2) Apple says that the 12" PB can be used with a 23" screen at the very most. What would happen if a 24" screen is used?I would guess that the color would be bad and the refresh rate would be slow
3) If a non Apple LCD is used, which brands have the best result, and the most compatibility? I personally use a Dell 20.1". It is the same exact LCD as used in the Apple, but the footprint is a little bigger and you don't get the pretty aluminum bezel. You do however get 4 USB ports on the display and an option to hook up more than one screen. It has hook ups for VGA, S-Video, DVI and something else I don't recall right now.
4) Is there any technology other than LCD that could be used with a Mac, and have good reliability and results? Not that I know of.
5) If a wireless keyboard/mouse set-up is used, should it be Apple to maximize performance, and reduce glitches, etc? I personally use the Apple Bluetooth ones b/c I like the idea of not having a dongle sticking out of my computer. The operate well, but if I were to do it all over again I think I would go with Logitec's new keyborad and mouse that are made for Macs. You can find it in froogle.com by searching for "Logitech S 530."
I hope this has all been helpful!

  • Transfer Pages from Powerbook G4 to MacBook Pro

Didn't really know where to find this answer, so I thought I would ask the knowledgeable Pages community. This is my situation...
I have just purchased the new 17" MacBook Pro (and YES!!! it is the bomb!), anyway, during the registration process of the new laptop I transferred all of my files and applications via Apple's built in "transfer" step.... I did not install any of the applications via CD's. Since I have transferred from a G4 to an Intel processor, will my applications be running natively on the Intel chip (those that can run natively)? Or will I have to reinstall Pages, etc. from the installation CD to get the "universal" code? Naturally, I would like my software to run natively as I assume it will be quicker and less prone to "bugs".
I thank all of you in advance for your knowledge on this subject.

You should probably create a new subject here, as it is a slightly different question. This thread is "solved" so people may have a tendency not to check it.
Anyhow, if you have a license for 05 you need to get the files for '05. Can you still download that somewhere, or did you download the testdrive for '06 by mistake?
As far as I remember other people have had similar problems when they knew for certain that they had both '05 and '06 installed. You may find the answer if you search the forum, and if you post a new topic, the same people who helped before may see it and help again. I haven't had that problem myself.
For photos published on Home Page, are they still visible on the net? If so you can ctrl+click on them and download them to your harddrive.
How did you publish the photos? If you used iWeb you may want to ask in the iWeb form at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=188 . If not the .Mac HomePage forum at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=975 may be able to help you.

  • Importing iTunes library from old powerbook to new macbook pro

What is the best way to import my old itunes library (from my 10.4.7 powerbook) to my new macbook pro?
    Thanks!

I'm still having some trouble, can someone give me guidance? Here is what I did:
    1. Connected old mac (PowerBook G4) to new mac (MacBook Pro) via firewire 800 and target mode.
    2. Located "iTunes Music" folder on old Mac and pulled the entire folder into "iTunes Music" on the new Mac.
    3. I restarted.
    4. iTunes didn't find the new music, it does find the one song I've purchased using the new Mac. I think this makes sense, because now the folder structure has an embedded "iTunes Music" folder (from the old Mac) in my new mac's "iTunes Music" folder. The structure looks like:
    -iTunes Music
----[folder for the one song I've purchased on the new mac]
----iTunes Music (this is the folder from the old mac)
---------[folders of music from the old mac]
    5. So I went into the iTunes Music folder I just imported, selected all the music, and copied it one level up.
    6. The result is on my new mac, my "iTunes Music" folder now contains all the music from the old mac, plus the one song I've puchased using the new mac.
    7. I restarted my new mac. Restarted iTunes, but still the only song that's recognized is the one I've already purchased. The others aren't showing.
    8. I've gone into preferences/advanced and confirmed I'm pointing at the right target folder.
Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here?

  • Importing data from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro

I would like to import my address book data and ICal date from my old Powerbook G4 to my new Macbook Pro.
Can anyone tell me where this data resides on my Powerbook G4 and how to move it over?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

If you open either one, under "File" you will find "import" and "export". I imported my address from a back up drive, but it should work from the PowerBook to the MBP. You can also import Safari Bookmarks this way.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro. What to expect in HDV?

I have Final Cut Pro 5.1
I do alot of editing in HDV. Although editing HDV on my Powerbook in FCP is possible, it's a little slow and rendering times are a little painful. What kinds of speed/rendering improvements should I see if I purchase one of the new Macbook pros? What are some of the everyday improvements in FCP that you noticed by upgrading?
    thanks in advance,
    dave

you are in for such a treat!
i don't have specific numbers for you, but the difference in performance of these machines is substantial
quite apart from cpu's and clock speeds, the MBP's have also got across the board better faster components such as faster beefier gfx gpu's, SATA hard discs etc
this year old comparison from barefeats pits a 2.0 GHz Powerbook G4 against a now very much outdated 2.0 GHz MBP Core Duo
    http://www.barefeats.com/pbcd.html
given that the current MBP's not only have a notably faster core clock speed than the earlier models, and also the newer generation of the chipset, Core 2 Duo vs the original Core Duo is significantly faster in itself at the same clock speed

  • Migrating from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro

How do I migrate my PowerBook G4 (powerPC) using OSX 10.5.8 files to newer MacBook Pro using OSX 10.8.4 with user and applications already installed? I'm replacing my G4 and inheriting hubby's older MacBook Pro (he has new machine) and want my files, bookmarks, iTunes, email, etc but keep his newer software and applications. What cables and programs do I use? How do I avoid not having permission to use programs? Thanks! Kat

Contacts should and if you transfer the entire Music folder, playlists will remain the same.
Also: I've been told to use an Ethernet cable since G4 does not have FireWire connection - you suggested using an adapter....
According to Mactracker, all Powerbook G4's have a Firewire connection.  The early and smaller ones have only Firewire 400, the larger later ones have a Firewire 800 connection.  Check you Mac carefully for the type of connections it has.  If it is a Firewire 400, then you need a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 converter.

  • PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro - when?

I am currently using a PowerBook G4 and intend to buy a MacBook Pro. I will need BootCamp as a replacement for my current VPC. I have read that the forthcoming Leopard OS will ship with BootCamp. Am I at any particular disadvantage buy purchasing now (with Tiger+Bootcamp) or would it be advisable to wait another six months or so before changing?

    Hi
I would suggest you wait. I've been looking to replace my PowerBook G4 for some time, but think buying now is a bad idea.
Core2Duo chips are already available in PC products so if Apple want to compete with the PC brigade, they are going to have to upgrade virtually all of their current line (except the Mac Pro for now) to the new 64 bit Core2Duo.
If they don't, sales will suffer. If I can buy a Core2Duo laptop running Windows now, why can't I get a Core2Duo MacBook Pro now?
I'm not sure if Apple are fully aware of what their transition to Intel means in real terms. They are going to have to offer quicker upgrades on their range of machines to fit in with the constantly upgrading world of PC competition. They can't just sit back as they used to with the PowerPC architecture, knowing it was a better (longevity wise) hardware base.
Intel inside means they have got to move their butts and keep ahead or at least up to date with PC offerings or their products will just look like expenive old computers compared to the constantly upgrading PC's.

I have ordered a new Macbook Pro and was looking for guidance on bringing it up to date with my old PowerBook with Tiger as easy as possible.
I was wondering if I could just move my total Users Folder from the PB to the new computer?
Are there items in this Tiger Users folder that would not work in the new Leopard Intel computer and should not be moved?

  • I followed the instructions to copy and paste ALL profile files from old PowerBook to new MacBook Pro, so why are no bookmarks now shown in Firefox?

    From the page
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile#w_copying-files-between-profile-folders
After dragging and dropping the profile folder from the old PowerBook to the new MacBook Pro, I followed the copy/paste instructions, apparently successfully, to replace all the files in the latter with all the files in the former -- essentially to transfer my Firefox browser functionality from the old computer to the new. However, on starting Firefox, I have ZERO bookmarks (in other words, Firefox looks like it did when I downloaded and installed it a couple days ago). One note: When I performed the operation, I had used the new version of Firefox almost not at all, yet in the course of copying and pasting I had to permit replacement of HUNDREDS of bookmark files with identical names. How could THIS be?!?

It is normally best to only restore personal data that you really need (bookmarks, passwords, etc.) and not a full profile folder.
The xxxx in the name of the JSON backup (bookmarks-####-##-##_xxxx_$$$$.jsonlz4) denotes the number of bookmarks in the file and a file hash ($$$$) is appended to check if it is necessary to save a new backup, so only if there is a different hash because bookmarks were modified then a new backup is created.
If you remove the newer backups that were created before you restored the backup and only leave the bookmark backups from the saved profile then Firefox should rebuild the bookmarks when you remove all the places files.

  • Import photos from old powerbook to new macbook pro with time machine

Today I received a new macbook pro from Apple because my powerbook g4 was beyond repair. I would like to import my iPhoto library from my time machine backup to the new computer. I have opened up iPhoto and then time machine but it is only showing me today, not what's been backed up on the harddrive. Can anyone tell me what to do to focus it to what was backed up, not just today?
Thank you so much for your help.

In System Preferences, Sharing, is the Computer Name of the new MacBook the same as the old PB? If not, right-click the Time Machine icon in the dock and choose +Browse Other Time Machine disks+. It should be obvious where to go from there.

  • Installation of Leo on PowerBook from my MacBook Pro does not work

    Hi there
I just wanted to upgrade my old PowerBook with Leo 10.5.
Since the CD Drive is defect I just installed it over Firewire from my MacBook Pro.
I did a complete new install to clean up everything.
The installation worked fine, and I can also start the system from my MB Pro.
However, I am not able to manage that my PowerBook starts on its own.
It shows always that the OS is not found (Mac&? symbol blinking).
What do I have to do? Did already the Software upgrade and hoped that it may be a simple firmware upgrade needed...but it still does not work.
Does anyone know this problem? Help is appreciated. Thanks.

If you have the Leopard Family Pack, it will work on both Intel and PPC computers. However, a Leopard DVD that is shipped with a computer will only work on that computer.
You can install on the PB using the MacBook's DVD drive via FireWire, but not the way you tried. You were running the installation on the MacBook. It saw the PB's drive as just an external FireWire drive on the MacBook, so it set it up as another bootable drive for the MacBook, with a GUID partition table. The PB cannot boot from such a drive. It needs a drive with APM (Apple Partition Map). A MacBook can format a drive with APM, but can't install OSX on it.
You have to use FireWire Target Disk mode in the opposite direction. Put the Leopard install DVD (the black retail one, not one that came with the MacBook) in the MacBook's DVD drive and boot the MacBook into target Disk Mode (hold down "T" while booting). Connect the PB to the MacBook with a FireWire cable, and boot the PB while holding down Option. When the arrow pointer appears, select the DVD and boot from it (click the large, right-pointing arrow). After choosing the language, select Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu. Select the PB's hard drive (all the way at the left, not the volume indented below it) and select the "Partition" tab. Set "Volume Scheme" to "1 Partition" and click the "Options" button. Choose "Apple Partition Map" and click "OK". Set the volume name and do the partitioning. Quit Disk Utility and continue with the installation. When it asks you to restart, it means the PB, not the MacBook (which is just acting as an external DVD drive).

  • Powerbook RAM in MacBook Pro

I'm sure this is probably not possible, but worth a shot.
Can I transfer the 1GB RAM chip in my Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz to my new MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz?

If the mac does boot by some strange change you will be totally downgrading the performance of you computer as both chips will need to run at the speed of the slower chip from your PowerBook.
It is simply a bad idea.

    Try this:
    1. There is an update to Migration Assistant in OS 10.5.8. Download and install it.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1434
    2. Connect the two Macs with an ethernet or firewire cable. (Wireless is very slow.)

    4. Run Migration Assistant on both Macs and follow the directions on this page.

  • Cannot transfer iphoto library from powerbook G4 to macbook pro??

Ok this is driving me insane... So i've had my trusty powerbook since 2005 and have recently purchased a 2009 macbook pro.
I have used migration assistant to transfer some stuff but i cannot get my photos from my iphoto folder onto my macbook pro, i can transfer files via ethernet using file share but in the the iphoto library folder on my powerbook g4 it is structured into dates and sub folders etc which have access priviliges set on each of the ridiculous amount of folders and sub folders.
So if i go into these folders i can change the read and right status but this would take forever and ever and my brother wants my powerbook g4 asap so please can someone help me out here with a quick and easy way to transfer my old photos??
I'm thinking i need to put my iphoto library into a folder that has open privilages but i need pointing in the right direction
    thanks matt.

so please can someone help me out here with a quick and easy way to transfer my old photos??
Use a external USB drive, that's the fasest way. Drag and drop copy one to another
Newer Mac's the Firewire is gone, needs a adapter to the Thunderbolt, or perhaps a cable you might not have on hand.
Take the folder of the G4's photo's and place it into your Finder > Computer > Macintosh HD > Users > you > Public > DropBox and that should change the permissions to you.
Or you can use the Finder >Get Info on the folder and set them to you and apply to enclosed items.
You will still need to import them into the newer iPhoto format, so don't replace iPhoto Libraries as the G4 one is likely too old to be recognized.
You can right click and "show package contents" if it's a pkg and there should be a folder called Originals you can import into the new iPhoto and thus into the new iPhoto Library.

  • Transferring files from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro via Firewire

Just got my new MacBook Pro Yesterday! Yay! I was about to transfer my files from old computer when I found, hmm...that firewire port looks different! Went to office max and bought a new firewire cable that looked like it should work, but it didn't. When I checked the apple website there were about 5 different firewire cables. Which one do I need? I run my offices website from my old computer, which no longer has a working monitor (thanks to my 8 month old german shepherd). So until I get my files transferred, I can't update my site! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Migration from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro - 14-36 hours?

Just got my MacBook Pro and didn't realize that none of my Firewire 400 cables wouldn't work with Firewire 800. Being it's a Friday and no one within 100 miles stocks a Firewire 800/Firewire 400 cable, I decided to use Airport to do migration (since the earliest I'll have appropriate cable will probably be the middle of next week).
I started the migration last night and it said it would take 14 hours for 45 gig. This morning (almost eight hours later) it still says it will take 14 hours and the status bar has only moved less that 25% across. At this rate it looks like the actual time is going to be around 36 hours (which is still faster than waiting for cables).
My concerns are 1) is this amount of time normal? and 2) If I hard wired the two machines together with an ethernet cable would it go any faster?
    Thanks for your help.
    Steve

An ethernet cable should go faster. That's how I did it yesterday. However, even so the Migration Assistant said it would take 5 hours. So I drilled down into the options and de-selected my music and my photos and just moved apps and account settings. After about 90 minutes I was up and running. At that point I enabled File Sharing on my old computer, then logged into it using Finder on the new one. I manually copied over my music and photos into the appropriate directories while I continued to work. Despite what Migration Assistant said, it only took about 90 more minutes to do that while I was actually writing a document in MS Word on the new one.
