12" Powerbook v 13" MacBook

Hey guys,
I'm after a little notebook for myself. I already have a 20" G5 iSight iMac and am, well I guess wanting a small ntoebook for myself. I've been looking at the 2 options that I consider my favourite, 12" Powerbook v 12" MacBook. I've gone over the specs and prices (important) of both and personally I find the 12" Powerbook a better buy.
Notebook: Powerbook v MacBook
Screen: 12" v 13"
Res: 1024x768 v 1280x800
CPU: G4 v Intel Core Duo
Speed: 1.5GHz v 1.83GHz
Ram: 512MB v 512MB
Hard Disk: 80gb v 60gb
Drive: Super v Combo
Price: A$1400 v $1570 (approx edu price)
Now, I love the finish and feel of the MacBook Pro, and I imagine the Powerbook would be very similar. I don't like the feel of the iBook, and I think that the MacBook is very similar to that. It would be handy to have the superdrive, but not necessary. The keyboard of the PowerBook is 'backlit' so it would be a very recent model, just before it was superseded I would imagine. I've got my iMac, so there is no need for hardcore video editing on my notebook-to-be. It is from a 'macrent' place, and is 'fully serviced and maintained by Apple, Australia'. It comes it original box, has original cables and also discs.
What do you think is the best notebook for those specs? Do you think that the Powerbook would be able to run Leopard? Remember that to get the Superdrive and 80gb hard drive int he MacBook it costs another $400!
Thanks

I recently sold my 12" PB for a MacBook
12" specs were- 1.5ghz G4, 1.25GB ram, 80gb &
superdrive
Macbook specs are: 2ghz intel, 2gb ram, 120gb &
superdrive
With education discounts, the price paid for the
macbook was only an extra £200
Macbook renders video in Final Cut much faster than
on the PB, and iPhoto loads almost instantly.
Absoutely. There's no question that Universal Apps run incredibly on Macbook.
Under Roestta, Photoshop CS2 runs at the same speed
as the PB, with Illustrator taking a little longer to
load (around 5-6 secs)
I'm not sure how much you've worked in either of these programs, but Photoshop CS2 does NOT run nearly as fast in Rosetta on the Macbook as it does on the 1.5Ghz G4 Powerbook. I have both computers, and I've tested them side by side. C'mon now...
In Windows on the Macbook however, Photoshop CS2 runs about three times faster then the G4 Powerbook running CS2 in OSX. So of course, when CS3 finally comes out.... we have A LOT to look forward to on the Macbook!
Word/Excel speed is the same.
Not if you're working with very large or complex documents. There's definitely a lag.... but certainly not as noticable as Photoshop.
Not a true comparison of course (as the macbook is
better specced ram/hd wise) however I am very pleased
with the performance of the core duo chip.
Widescreen is the icing on the cake.
It's comparable. The fact that a G4 Powerbook spec'd at 1.5Ghz with only 1.2GB of RAM can nearly double the speed in Photoshop CS2 compared to a 2GB, 2Ghz CoreDuo Macbook shows that Rosetta leaves a bit to be desired for PROFESSIONAL use. Of COURSE Macbook is the better computer, but if someone is looking for a bargain, I thought I'd compare both. My reccomendation would still be for the Macbook, and at this time just run Photoshop in Windows to get full speed!

  • Connecting powerbook to a macbook to display on both screens

I would like to display an iphoto slideshow on two screens. My slideshow is on a G4 15" powerbook and I would like to be able to display it on that screen and a macbook at the same time. How do I connect the two together and output to both screens from the powerbook?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Hi, Michael. It would be simplest just to install and run the slide show on both machines, independently and simultaneously. Neither a Powerbook nor a MacBook is designed to be used as a second display for another computer. That said, it is possible, using a VNC client, to set one machine up so it displays what is running on another Mac. But I'll be darned if I can find instructions for doing so using any search terms I've thought of so far.

  • Firewire between PowerBook G4 and MacBook

I'm trying to connect my PowerBook G4 and MacBook via firewire. The MacBook is acting as the external hard drive.
The PowerBook G4 was turned on, I connected the firewire to both computer and then booted the MacBook holding down T. The firewire icon is floating on the MacBook, but the hard drive isn't showing up on the PowerBook G4 desktop. I restarted the PowerBook G4 while they were both still connected, but still nothing. Does this mean my MacBook hard drive isn't work?

The cable works fine, tried it between the PowerBook G4 and an external hard drive.
The MacBook does not boot. It turns on to a blank white screen and stays there. It won't boot into safe mode or single user mode or anything like that.
Yes, I do have the install discs and put them in to try and reinstall Leopard. They boot, but the hard drive won't show when it asks me where to install. I hear there's a bug with the hard drive not appearing there and waited up to an hour on that screen, but that didn't make it show either. Then I went into Disk Utility, but the hard drive wouldn't show there either. At some point it did, but I couldn't run a repair on it. Then I restarted with the installation disc in again and then it wouldn't show at all.

  • How do I transfer photoshop cs3 from my mac powerbook to my macbook air?

How do I transfer my photoshop cs3 from my mac powerbook to my macbook air?

Download the Trial version to the MacBook Air from
    http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html
Follow the Very Important Instructions on that page first otherwise the links won't work.
Then launch the Trial and enter your CS3 serial number and you're done.
That'll use up your second (of 2) activation. If you want to remove Photoshop CS3 from the Powerbook then open Photoshop Help > Deactivate then uninstall to free up an activation.

  • Powerbook 15, or macbook???

    hi,
I have an ibook G3 900m. that I'm going to upgrade from in the next couple months. The dilemma is. . . . do I go G4 15" powerbook, or a macbook. through the refurb/resale page in the Apple store, they are about the same price. I do basic videos of our folk band, and the usual stuff, music and internet wise. I have photoshop elements, and the default apple software. Which way do I go? The power, portability, and the isight are nice in the macbook, but the size and features of the powerbook sound good too. . .
What's a semi geek to do?
    thanks for input.

The reason there are so many Windows viruses and so few Mac viruses is because there are so few Macs compared to Windows in use worldwide, so there is less software to infect. Why bother messing with 5% or so of the personal computer market? And as much as I prefer Macs to PCs, I doubt that will change, even with Mac using an Intel chip that is capable of running Windows XP.
The thing that will continue to keep Mac's market share down is its prices. Buying a Mac over a PC is akin to buying a Hummer over an Explorer. Both are decent, capable vehicles, and both can do basically the same job. But one comes at a premium. I think a lot of people prefer the idea of a $600 DELL to a $2,000 Macbook Pro, and I can't blame them. I don't agree with them, but I can see where they're coming from.
What makes a Macbook Pro so appealing is not its speed (I've worked with them, and I really don't see much of a speed advantage over my Powerbook with regard to the things I do), it's its ability to run both Mac and Windows operating software. It gives you, essentially, two computers in one. But since I will probably never switch to a PC and I have no need for Windows XP, I am not in any hurry to switch to a Macbook Pro anytime soon. What will drive me to switch over eventually will be when the Macbook Pro's performance so exceeds my Powerbook's performance as to make my Powerbook obsolete. As I can do everything I want and need to do on my Powerbook, and can't see that changing in the next 3 years or so, I will stick with what I have.

  • Can I transfer everything from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Air?

Tried getting a straight answer from calling Apple but got someone who was surprisingly clueless and confused so trying here. Thinking of buying a new MacBook Air, the version just previous to latest one just out. I am simply wondering if it's possible to transfer everything, about 17GB, from my old PowerBook G4 with v10.3.9, to the MacBook Air. There are so few ports on the Air that I am concerned I won't be able to. Last time I did this I used firewire I think? when moving everything from an old G3 powerbook and it worked great. Thanks!
Sorry for duplication of this. Typing on a iPad and I guess I accidentally hit return instead of shift key and not having an edit or delete feature here *****.

In what form is the installation? Bootcamp or VM(virtual machine)?
If it is a VM, then I have some experience there. It is as simple as copying over the VM container file in which the installation resides. The VM software, upon usage of the VM, will ask whether you have moved the installation, to which you would respond, "yes".  Test the installation, then delete the VM from your old machine. Typically the licensing for Windows only would permit you to use it in one place.
p.s. You may have to deactivate some licenses for software on your old machine, then activate them on the Air, e.g. Adobe CS. Make sure you do this BEFORE you delete the VM on your old machine.

  • Have an eMac, Powerbook and a macbook, how do I make it work?

    Hi
My eMac is running 10.4.11 so I can't subscribe to Netflix Canada with it. My macbook is running the same OS and I'm supposed to be able to subscribe but I don't know how to hook it up to my tv sets.
My Television sets are non hd - the old style with S video and RCA inputs.
So, if I got a Apple TV how would I hook it up to my tv sets and could I stream it through a Powerbook G4 or my macbook.
A little background is that my husband is very ill and is using my Powerbook bedside to watch movies. I just can't find or get out to get that many. I'm hoping to find a way I can stream Netflix to both our rooms through our computers.
Oh, my eMac is in the livingroom and I would like to know what I need to link it to a TV with S video or RCA.
Your help would be much appreciated

You need iTunes 10 to run AppleTV. You need minimum of OSX 10.5 to run iTunes 10.

  • Transfer Pages from Powerbook G4 to MacBook Pro

Didn't really know where to find this answer, so I thought I would ask the knowledgeable Pages community. This is my situation...
I have just purchased the new 17" MacBook Pro (and YES!!! it is the bomb!), anyway, during the registration process of the new laptop I transferred all of my files and applications via Apple's built in "transfer" step.... I did not install any of the applications via CD's. Since I have transferred from a G4 to an Intel processor, will my applications be running natively on the Intel chip (those that can run natively)? Or will I have to reinstall Pages, etc. from the installation CD to get the "universal" code? Naturally, I would like my software to run natively as I assume it will be quicker and less prone to "bugs".
I thank all of you in advance for your knowledge on this subject.

You should probably create a new subject here, as it is a slightly different question. This thread is "solved" so people may have a tendency not to check it.
Anyhow, if you have a license for 05 you need to get the files for '05. Can you still download that somewhere, or did you download the testdrive for '06 by mistake?
As far as I remember other people have had similar problems when they knew for certain that they had both '05 and '06 installed. You may find the answer if you search the forum, and if you post a new topic, the same people who helped before may see it and help again. I haven't had that problem myself.
For photos published on Home Page, are they still visible on the net? If so you can ctrl+click on them and download them to your harddrive.
How did you publish the photos? If you used iWeb you may want to ask in the iWeb form at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=188 . If not the .Mac HomePage forum at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=975 may be able to help you.

  • Importing iTunes library from old powerbook to new macbook pro

What is the best way to import my old itunes library (from my 10.4.7 powerbook) to my new macbook pro?
    Thanks!

I'm still having some trouble, can someone give me guidance? Here is what I did:
    1. Connected old mac (PowerBook G4) to new mac (MacBook Pro) via firewire 800 and target mode.
    2. Located "iTunes Music" folder on old Mac and pulled the entire folder into "iTunes Music" on the new Mac.
    3. I restarted.
    4. iTunes didn't find the new music, it does find the one song I've purchased using the new Mac. I think this makes sense, because now the folder structure has an embedded "iTunes Music" folder (from the old Mac) in my new mac's "iTunes Music" folder. The structure looks like:
    -iTunes Music
----[folder for the one song I've purchased on the new mac]
----iTunes Music (this is the folder from the old mac)
---------[folders of music from the old mac]
    5. So I went into the iTunes Music folder I just imported, selected all the music, and copied it one level up.
    6. The result is on my new mac, my "iTunes Music" folder now contains all the music from the old mac, plus the one song I've puchased using the new mac.
    7. I restarted my new mac. Restarted iTunes, but still the only song that's recognized is the one I've already purchased. The others aren't showing.
    8. I've gone into preferences/advanced and confirmed I'm pointing at the right target folder.
Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here?

  • Importing data from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro

I would like to import my address book data and ICal date from my old Powerbook G4 to my new Macbook Pro.
Can anyone tell me where this data resides on my Powerbook G4 and how to move it over?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

If you open either one, under "File" you will find "import" and "export". I imported my address from a back up drive, but it should work from the PowerBook to the MBP. You can also import Safari Bookmarks this way.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading from Powerbook G4 to Macbook Pro. What to expect in HDV?

I have Final Cut Pro 5.1
I do alot of editing in HDV. Although editing HDV on my Powerbook in FCP is possible, it's a little slow and rendering times are a little painful. What kinds of speed/rendering improvements should I see if I purchase one of the new Macbook pros? What are some of the everyday improvements in FCP that you noticed by upgrading?
    thanks in advance,
    dave

you are in for such a treat!
i don't have specific numbers for you, but the difference in performance of these machines is substantial
quite apart from cpu's and clock speeds, the MBP's have also got across the board better faster components such as faster beefier gfx gpu's, SATA hard discs etc
this year old comparison from barefeats pits a 2.0 GHz Powerbook G4 against a now very much outdated 2.0 GHz MBP Core Duo
    http://www.barefeats.com/pbcd.html
given that the current MBP's not only have a notably faster core clock speed than the earlier models, and also the newer generation of the chipset, Core 2 Duo vs the original Core Duo is significantly faster in itself at the same clock speed

  • Migrating from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro

How do I migrate my PowerBook G4 (powerPC) using OSX 10.5.8 files to newer MacBook Pro using OSX 10.8.4 with user and applications already installed? I'm replacing my G4 and inheriting hubby's older MacBook Pro (he has new machine) and want my files, bookmarks, iTunes, email, etc but keep his newer software and applications. Contacts should and if you transfer the entire Music folder, playlists will remain the same.
Also: I've been told to use an Ethernet cable since G4 does not have FireWire connection - you suggested using an adapter....
According to Mactracker, all Powerbook G4's have a Firewire connection.  The early and smaller ones have only Firewire 400, the larger later ones have a Firewire 800 connection.  Check you Mac carefully for the type of connections it has.  If it is a Firewire 400, then you need a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 converter.

  • How to connect Powerbook 1400 to macbook with Gigabit ethernet

I have a wonderful Powerbook 1400, system 8.6, no cd drive only floppies 2 PCMCIA card slots (which may be both not working, a SCSI HDI-30 ethernet slot.
How can I recover the date on this computer, as i just realised after buying a new Macbook dual core that it has a Gigbit ethernet which is a different slot.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks, Maria

    Maria,
I also still have my 1400; it's in beautiful shape but I never use it anymore.
Since the 1400 did not come with Ethernet or modem, you had to add them via a PCMCIA PC card or install internally an Ethernet card (no internal modem card). I believe there is also a SCSI > Ethernet adapter but this is all more work than necessary. None of the ports on the 1400 are compatible with the MacBook.
I think by far the easiest method for retrieving data is to buy a PC Card Adapter (this fits into the PCMCIA card slot) for $10, then buy a small flash memory card. After you put the memory card in the PC Card Adapter and the Adapter into the card slot, the flash memory card mounts on the desktop as just another "HD" and you drag-copy the files to the "HD". There is no software to install.
    http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1139
However, you will also need a USB card reader for the MacBook. Possibly you know someone with a card reader and they could burn a CD for you.
You could also use your 1400's floppy drive to copy data, then buy a USB floppy drive for your MacBook, but if you have a lot of files, this is cumbersome.
You can buy a used Ethernet PC card but you require the correct Ethernet software plus it may be difficult to get file sharing working with the MacBook, not because your MacBook has Gigabit, but OS 8.6 and Tiger have a difficult time talking to each other.

  • PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro - when?

I am currently using a PowerBook G4 and intend to buy a MacBook Pro. I will need BootCamp as a replacement for my current VPC. I have read that the forthcoming Leopard OS will ship with BootCamp. Am I at any particular disadvantage buy purchasing now (with Tiger+Bootcamp) or would it be advisable to wait another six months or so before changing?

    Hi
I would suggest you wait. I've been looking to replace my PowerBook G4 for some time, but think buying now is a bad idea.
Core2Duo chips are already available in PC products so if Apple want to compete with the PC brigade, they are going to have to upgrade virtually all of their current line (except the Mac Pro for now) to the new 64 bit Core2Duo.
If they don't, sales will suffer. If I can buy a Core2Duo laptop running Windows now, why can't I get a Core2Duo MacBook Pro now?
I'm not sure if Apple are fully aware of what their transition to Intel means in real terms. They are going to have to offer quicker upgrades on their range of machines to fit in with the constantly upgrading world of PC competition. They can't just sit back as they used to with the PowerPC architecture, knowing it was a better (longevity wise) hardware base.
Intel inside means they have got to move their butts and keep ahead or at least up to date with PC offerings or their products will just look like expenive old computers compared to the constantly upgrading PC's.
